  • Five unique, random numbers from a subset

    - by tau
I know similar questions come up a lot and there's probably no definitive answer, but I want to generate five unique random numbers from a subset of numbers that is potentially infinite (maybe 0-20, or 0-1,000,000). The only catch is that I don't want to have to run while loops or fill an array. My current method is to simply generate five random numbers from a subset minus the last five numbers. If any of the numbers match each other, then they go to their respective place at the end of the subset. So if the fourth number matches any other number, it will bet set to the 4th from the last number. Does anyone have a method that is "random enough" and doesn't involve costly loops or arrays? Please keep in mind this a curiosity, not some mission-critical problem. I would appreciate it if everyone didn't post "why are you having this problem?" answers. I am just looking for ideas. Thanks a lot!

  • Generating random numbers in C

    - by moonstruckhorrors
While searching for Tutorials on generating random numbers in C I found This Topic When I try to use the rand() function with parameters, I always get the random number generated 0. When I try to use the rand() function with parameters, I always get the value 41. And whenever I try to use arc4random() and random() functions, I get a LNK2019 error. Here's what I'm doing: #include <stdlib.h> int main() { int x; x = rand(6); printf("%d", x); } This code always generate 41. Where am I going wrong?? P.S. : I'm running Windows XP SP3 and using VS2010 Command Prompt as compiler. P.P.S. : Took me 15 minutes to learn how to format properly.

  • regular expression for letters, numbers and - _ .

    - by Jorre
I'm having trouble checking in PHP if a value is is any of the following combinations letters (upper or lowercase) numbers (0-9) underscore (_) dash (-) point (.) no spaces! or other characters a few examples: OK: "screen123.css" OK: "screen-new-file.css" OK: "screen_new.js" NOT OK: "screen new file.css" I guess I need a regex for this, since I need to throw an error when a give string has other characters in it than the ones mentioned above.

  • Scala: Matching optional Regular Expression groups

    - by Brian Heylin
I'm trying to match on an option group in Scala 2.8 (beta 1) with the following code: import scala.xml._ val StatementPattern = """([\w\.]+)\s*:\s*([+-])?(\d+)""".r def buildProperty(input: String): Node = input match { case StatementPattern(name, value) => <propertyWithoutSign /> case StatementPattern(name, sign, value) => <propertyWithSign /> } val withSign = "property.name: +10" val withoutSign = "property.name: 10" buildProperty(withSign) // <propertyWithSign></propertyWithSign> buildProperty(withoutSign) // <propertyWithSign></propertyWithSign> But this is not working. What is the correct way to match optional regex groups?

  • Is there a replacement for Paste.Template?

    - by Jorge Vargas
I have grown tired of all the little issues with paste template, it's horrible to maintain the templates, it has no way of updating an old project and it's very hard to test. I'm wondering if someone knows of an alternative for quickstart generators as they have proven to be useful.

  • Using regular expression to trim html

    - by Tim
Been trying to solve this for a while now. I need a regex to strip the newlines, tabs and spaces between the html tags demonstrated in the example below: Source: <html> <head> <title> Some title </title> </head> </html> Wanted result: <html><head><title>Some title</title></head></html> The trimming of the whitespaces before the "Some title" is optional. I'd be grateful for any help

  • What good open source programs exist for fuzzing popular image file types?

    - by JohnnySoftware
I am looking for a free, open source, portable fuzzing tool for popular image file types that is written in either Java, Python, or Jython. Ideally, it would accept specifications for the fuzzable fields using some kind of declarative constraints. Non-procedural grammar for specifying constraints are greatly preferred. Otherwise, might as well write them all in Python or whatever. Just specifying ranges of valid values or expressions for them. Ideally, it would support some kind of generative programming to export the fuzzer into various programming languages to suit cases where more customization was required. If it supported a direct-manipulation GUI for controlling parameter values and ranges, that would be nice too. The file formats that should be supported are: GIF JPEG PNG So basically, it should be sort of a toolkit consisting of ready-to-run utility, a framework or library, and be capable of generating the fuzzed files directly as well as from programs it generates. It needs to be simple so that test images can be created quickly. It should have a batch capability for creating a series of images. Creating just one at a time would be too painful. I do not want a hacking tool, just a QA tool. Basically, I just want to address concerns that it is taking too long to get commonplace image rendering/parsing libraries stable and trustworthy.

  • regular expression and escaping

    - by pstanton
Sorry if this has been asked, my search brought up many off topic posts. I'm trying to convert wildcards from a user defined search string (wildcard is "*") to postgresql like wildcard "%". I'd like to handle escaping so that "%" => "\%" and "\*" => "*" I know i could replace \* with something else prior to replacing * and then swap it back, but i'd prefer not to and instead only convert * using a pattern that selects it when not proceeded by \. String convertWildcard(String like) { like = like.replaceAll("%", "\\%"); like = like.replaceAll("\\*", "%"); return like; } Assert.assertEquals("%", convertWildcard("*")); Assert.assertEquals("\%", convertWildcard("%")); Assert.assertEquals("*", convertWildcard("\*")); // FAIL Assert.assertEquals("a%b", convertWildcard("a*b")); Assert.assertEquals("a\%b", convertWildcard("a%b")); Assert.assertEquals("a*b", convertWildcard("a\*b")); // FAIL ideas welcome.

  • Ambiguous Evaluation of Lambda Expression on Array

    - by Joe
I would like to use a lambda that adds one to x if x is equal to zero. I have tried the following expressions: t = map(lambda x: x+1 if x==0 else x, numpy.array) t = map(lambda x: x==0 and x+1 or x, numpy.array) t = numpy.apply_along_axis(lambda x: x+1 if x==0 else x, 0, numpy.array) Each of these expressions returns the following error: ValueError: The truth value of an array with more than one element is ambiguous. Use a.any() or a.all() My understanding of map() and numpy.apply_along_axis() was that it would take some function and apply it to each value of an array. From the error it seems that the the lambda is being evaluated as x=array, not some value in array. What am I doing wrong? I know that I could write a function to accomplish this but I want to become more familiar with the functional programming aspects of python.

  • Best way to get a reasonably random key for MYSQL records

    - by Steve N
Hi there, I need to generate a reasonably random unique key for a table. It should be something like a GUID for MYSQL. I've tried UUID, but it looks like only the first few characters are actually random- the rest are the same every time I insert them. Essentially, it is desirable for this key field to be very difficult to guess, even if you already have one known value in the column. What is the best way to do this, and how should I set up the field data type to store the value efficiently? Thank you, Steve

  • SSRS Dynamic Returning Dataset Collection Field in Expression

    - by Ray Clark
I wrote a custom assembly to take a parameter value from the report and return a field from the dataset collection. My assembly returns the correct fields!name.value, but it shows me the string representation of it. How can I get it to resolve as the actual fields!name.value to display the actual data in the dataset? If I enter fields!name.value in manually it works fine showing me the value. If I resolve it with my custom code it display "fields!name.value" to me in the cell.

  • SFINAE + sizeof = detect if expression compiles

    - by FredOverflow
    I just found out how to check if operator<< is provided for a type. template<class T> T& lvalue_of_type(); template<class T> T rvalue_of_type(); template<class T> struct is_printable { template<class U> static char test(char(*)[sizeof( lvalue_of_type<std::ostream>() << rvalue_of_type<U>() )]); template<class U> static long test(...); enum { value = 1 == sizeof test<T>(0) }; typedef boost::integral_constant<bool, value> type; }; Is this trick well-known, or have I just won the metaprogramming Nobel prize? ;) EDIT: I made the code simpler to understand and easier to adapt with two global function template declarations lvalue_of_type and rvalue_of_type.

  • dynamic xpath expression

    - by Ferol
Good day, colleagues! Tell me please, how to make a dynamic xpath-parsing: for example, instead of writing $domXPath-query('//[(@id = "article-id-18")]'); - write something like that $domXPath-query('//[(@id = "article-id-*")]');, because in my case, the site's script generate (every time) a new id for block, that contains article's text? So question, is above.
