  • GPL licensed software installed on commercial hardware

    Do vendors need to provide sources, at the customer's request, for GPL licensed software installed on the hardware they sell? For example, a vendor sells an IPTV box and pre-installs some proprietary software product which is linked with some GPLed library. As a consequence, the software becomes GPLed itself. Does the vendor need to provide the source code for it? The vendor doesn't sell that software, he sells hardware.

  • Oredev 2012: Summary and source code

    This week, I had the pleasure to be invited to talk at Oredev, a really cool conference taking place in Malmo, Sweden. The whole event is awesome, including a very special dinner on Monday including sauna and swimming in a 6 degrees cold Baltic sea, and a reception with dinner at the town hall, including the mayor himself. Considering Malmo is a town of 300'000 inhabitants, it is a pretty nice occasion and the historical building itself is really worth seeing. For those interested, I placed my pictures on my Flickr account. I had a workshop on Tuesday morning about Windows 8 development with XAML/C#, and then a session on Wednesday about MVVM in Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, of course using MVVM Light. I was very nervous because I reworked some of my demos as recently as this morning, in the wake of the Build conference last week and the release of both the Windows Phone SDK and MVVM Light V4.1. Everything went well however, and if I judge by the people I talked t after the talk, and Twitter, everything went pretty well. Before my talk on Tuesday, I had the pleasure to see a talk by Iris Classon (@irisclasson) on the challenges of being a "n00b" and a woman in software development. I especially appreciated her research and conclusions on the lack of women I our industry, a topic that is dear to my heart (because I want the best possible future for my two daughters, and also because I really enjoy working with women on projects, and getting a different insight on the art of software development. I really want to thank the excellent organization committee for their hard work and their fantastic welcome to Malmo. In particular Emily Holweck did a wonderful job and was super helpful throughout the preparation and the conference itself. I made a few pictures during my stay, all with the new Nokia Lumia 920, and hope you will enjoy them too. The source code and the slides… The source code is available for download from Skydrive. MVVM Applied slides Source code package with Win8Demo: The demo I built during the 4 hours workshop, with some light MVVM, web services (JSON), GridView, Design time data (Blend / Visual Studio designer), Bing maps integration, location sensor, Search pane integration. SemanticZoomSample: a sample I put together to demonstrate the SemanticZoom control, with two GridViews and of course full design time data for Blend work. Due to time constraints, I was not able to show this demo during the workshop, but I publish it anyway, hoping it will be useful to someone.   • What grammatical tense should I write my specifications in?

    We are currently writing functional and technical specifications in a two column format; summary sentence and technical detail. The details often refer to an appendix with diagrams, layout designs ect. However I am struggling with what tense to write it in: With past tense as if the work is done I struggle to show highlight extensions of exiting work. Future tense as in it needs to do X starts to sound like a to do list or Tense neutral very hard as it has either going to be done or is done. To add further confusion this specification may be read by people who do not have English as a first language.

  • Domain held at one registry, need to redirect to subdomain on my own hosting provider

    Hi, There are lots of questions around this general area, but I haven't seen one that exactly mirrors what I'd like to know. It's per the title really. My understanding (and what I'm told by my host) is the easiest thing is just to get the transfer key and bring the DNS across to my own hosting provider. Also I'm told by my host this doesn't affect the client's ownership of the domain itself. Basically, I have a subdomain setup with the site (this has the same IP address as the top level domain). So presumably just giving the other registrar that IP address will only refer it only to the TLD rather than the subdomain. What's the easiest way to achieve this? It's an asp.net site, I don't have a hosted directory on the client's account where I can code a redirect. Thanks all Mark

  • Will URL encoding the image names

    Just wondering if it makes any difference to Google whether or not I URL encode the image names when linking to them. For example if I have an image named "test-1234-!.jpg", does it make a difference if I name it refer to it as "test-1234-%21.jpg"? The reason I am asking is because I am doing a major shift in the way my website works and while all new image names will not be URL encoded, all of the past ones are. I want to see if it is worth it renaming all of them or if I should just leave it like that.

  • What is the term for a really BIG source code commit?

    Sometimes when we check the commit history of a software, we may see that there are a few commits that are really BIG - they may change 10 or 20 files with hundreds of changed source code lines (delta). I remember that there is a commonly used term for such BIG commit but I can't recall exactly what that term is. Can anyone help me? What is the term that programmers usually use to refer to such BIG and giant commit? BTW, is committing a lot of changes all together a good practice? UPDATE: thank you guys for the inspiring discussion! But I think "code bomb" is the term that I'm looking for.

Our articles write by high level processionals in the field that they write about - we also pay them high salary. In recent google algorithm change my main site rating down very seriously. What should we do to restore company main site google rating? our solution and ideas that not working well: rel="canonical" to source website (we already have it before google change without results) meta "original-source" but not have rating influence (we already have it before google change without results) Edit:: maybe we should delete rel="canonical" from main website articles that refer to our other small websites (because this articles in main website not indexed in google)?   • Can I use wikipedia/commons images to create a logo for my program?

    I'm not perfectly clear on the implications of the GFDL for reusing pictures in this manner. Would adding a reference in the git's root folder's README suffice, or would that clutter every use of the logo, as you would have to attribute all original contributors on every single usage (like, e.g. presentations, flyers, websites, ...)? The software itself qualifies as FOSS, although it doesn't have a GNU* license.

  • Can not add custom keyboard shortcut

    I'm trying to assign custom shortcut to lunch my own script (I don't need it in terminal window, just lunch it) So, I went to Settings - Keyboard - Shortcuts - Custom Shortcuts press the button with "+" and enter the name of shortcut and the command itself. But then I cannot bind keys to that shortcut. I select new row and press needed keys (Shift + F3) and nothing happens. I can change the keys for system shortcuts, but do not have any luck with my own. Any ideas?

    Hi All,   Sysprep creates a snapshot of a virtual machine with BizTalk Server 2010 installed for quick deployment on other virtual machines   Prerequisites Before using Sysprep, you should have some knowledge of using virtual machines with Hyper-V. You should also have a virtual machine with a clean, typical installation of BizTalk Server and all of its prerequisites. Sysprep will run on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista with SP1. Description Sysprep creates a VHD of a BizTalk Server 2010 installation (including the operating system and all prerequisites) for quick deployment on other virtual machines. An image created using Sysprep will choose a new computer name in order to join the domain the first time it starts.   • What exactly is the build number in MAJOR.MINOR.BUILDNUMBER.REVISION

    What I think about Build Numbers is that whenever a new nightly build is created, a new BUILDNUMBER is generated and assigned to that build. So for my 7.0 version application the nightly builds will be 7.0.1, 7.0.2 and so on. Is it so? Then what is the use of a REVISION after the build number? Or is the REVISION part being incremented after each nightly build? I am a little confused here... do we refer to each nightly build as a BUILD? The format is mentioned here: AssemblyVersion - MSDN

  • Why does the BADSIG/"Untrusted sources" error recur forever?

    On at least a dozen occasions, I've spent 2-3 hours figuring out how to get Ubuntu 11.10-12.10 to either update or acquire software from software center, or both. I want to fix whatever is causing the BADSIG problem once and for all; I've wasted so much time trying to get this to work well enough that I can rely on it, but the same problem comes back after a couple weeks of normal updates and software center usage. Don't refer me to a standard posted solution on the web---whatever it is, I've used it more times than you have. The question isn't whether I can get it to work right this afternoon. I can. The question is what is causing the problem to recur regularly across 3 releases. Notice: I use this computer 4-5 hours per week and I do little on it. PDFs, Latex, FireFox, Mendeley, and that's it. I don't constantly install new software, and I don't fiddle with things unnecessarily.
