  • How to index tables and pictures in Word so you can get a list of them automatically ?

    - by ldigas
I'm writing one of those things where you have to provide a list of all the tables and pictures at the beginning of the text. I know how to insert caption for a picture, but I'm not sure as to how can I do that for a table or some miscellaus object, in a way that I can get a list of them all afterwards ? Can anyone give a hint or two ? Usually I do these things manually, but this document is getting big.

  • Running a PC with Windows 7 as an Appliance

    - by Steve
What options are available for running Windows 7 as an appliance and is there an official Microsoft program to get involved in? I would like to run the computer as a box that boots, displays no bios or boot information, then moves immediately to run one program full-screen without allowing the user to interact. It seems like there should be some base configurations that allow this or a special version of Windows that is configured to minimize extraneous display and control.

  • Get changes to local config files with apt

    - by tstenner
When I'm updating a package and a new configuration file is shipped, I'm asked whether I want to keep my version, install the new one or view the differences. As I have to document an older server, I'd like to start by explaining what I did (and why), how can I get a list of changes to local config files?

  • How to manually check Ubuntu version? (e.g. from hard drive)

    - by tkoomzaaskz
There is a fast way to check ubuntu version of the system: $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 11.10 Release: 11.10 Codename: oneiric But what are the files that store this information and how can I access them? Particularly, I've got an old partition with a dead Linux lying there and I would like to check what was its Ubuntu version. lsb_release -a shows my current Linux version only...

  • Print from MAC OS 10.5.8 to HPC3180 on Windows 7, How?

    - by Tom Groszko
Can anyone point to a document that describes how to print from a Max OS 10.5.8 to an HP Photosmart C3180 series print connected to Windows 7. I can’t get anything but nonsense to print. I was able to do this with Windows XP, could not do it with Vista and am now hopping to get it done with System 7. HP has been no help at all. Apparently nobody who works for them knows anything about both computers.

  • Restrict print copies on a PDF

    - by Chops
We have a very specific use case for an application we're developing, where a user will be presented with a PDF document, which they can print off. However, we need to be able to restrict the PDF so it can only be printed off once. Does anyone know if there's a way to restrict the number of times a PDF can be printed. I'm aware the PDF spec has lots of security features, but I've not found reference to anything like this before. Many thank.

  • PeerApp Scalability

    - by ChaosFreak
William, In response to a question on P2P caching, you answered "PeerApp can do that but probably doesn't suit the scale you are looking at." PeerApp is the most scalable P2P cache in the world, and can handle hundreds of Gb per second of bandwidth. Their largest deployment in Taiwan handles 120Gbps with no problem. The next largest competitor, OverSi, can barely handle a tenth of that. Where do you get your information that PeerApp "doesn't suit scale"?

  • Server access through switch port

    - by Kblz Btz
I am using wireshark to monitor traffic on a server - Problem is, the computer I am using is only a terminal wired through the switch. Main line comes into the server which is relayed to multi-port switch (roughly 50 connections). Right now I get a lot of server communication between my it and my terminal but shows no information for other terminals. Can wireshark be configured to monitor ALL traffic in this environment?
