• Is there a recommended way to communicate scientific/engineering programming to C developers?

  Hi, I have a lot of MATLAB code that needs to get ported to C (execution speed is critical for this work) as part of a back-end process for a web application. When I attempt to outsource this code to a C developer, I assume (correct me if I'm wrong) few C developers also understand MATLAB code (things like indexing and memory management are different, etc.). I wonder if there are any C developers out there that can recommend a procedure for me to follow to best communicate what the code does? For example, should I provide the MATLAB code and explain what it's doing line by line? Or, should I just provide the math/algorithm, explain it in plain English, and let the C developer implement it with this understanding in his/her own way (e.g. can I assume the developer understands how to work with complex math (i.e. imaginary numbers), how to generate histograms, perform an FFT, etc.)? Or, is there a better method? I expect I'm not the first to need to do this, so I wonder if any C developers out there ran into this situation and can share any conventional wisdom how they'd like this task to be transferred? • More efficient R / Sweave / TeXShop work-flow?

  I've now got everything to work properly on my Mac OS X 10.6 machine so that I can create decent looking LaTeX documents with Sweave that include snippets of R code, output, and LaTeX formatting together. Unfortunately, I feel like my work-flow is a bit clunky and inefficient: Using TextWrangler, I write LaTeX code and R code (surrounded by <<= above and @ below R code chunk) together in one .Rnw file. After saving changes, I call the .Rnw file from R using the Sweave command Sweave(file="/Users/mymachine/Documents/Assign4.Rnw", syntax="SweaveSyntaxNoweb") In response, R outputs the following message: You can now run LaTeX on 'Assign4.tex' So then I find the .tex file (Assign4.tex) in the R directory and copy it over to the folder in my documents ~/Documents/ where the .Rnw file is sitting (to keep everything in one place). Then I open the .tex file (e.g. Assign4.tex) in TeXShop and compile it there into pdf format. It is only at this point that I get to see any changes I have made to the document and see if it 'looks nice'. Is there a way that I can compile everything with one button click? Specifically it would be nice to either call Sweave / R directly from TextWrangler or TeXShop. I suspect it might be possible to code a script in Terminal to do it, but I have no experience with Terminal. Please let me know if there's any other things I can do to streamline or improve my work flow.

  This is my first attempt to write shorthand if statements however am befuddled by why the expanded versions don't work quite the way I imagined they would. Code 1 - Does not work if(document.getElementById == true) { alert("The document object model is supported by: " + navigator.appName); } Code 2 - Does work if(document.getElementById != false) { alert("The document object model is supported by: " + navigator.appName); } Code 3 - The shorthand that does work if(document.getElementById) { alert("The document object model is supported by: " + navigator.appName); } Why is that if I expand the shorthand in 3 to the first code sample not work and why does it work if I have it equal to != false?

• Recommendations for IPC between parent and child processes in .NET?

  My .NET program needs to run an algorithm that makes heavy use of 3rd party libraries (32-bit), most of which are unmanaged code. I want to drive the CPU as hard as I can, so the code runs several threads in parallel to divide up the work. I find that running all these threads simultaneously results in temporary memory spikes, causing the process' virtual memory size to approach the 2 GB limit. This memory is released back pretty quickly, but occasionally if enough threads enter the wrong sections of code at once, the process crosses the "red line" and either the unmanaged code or the .NET code encounters an out of memory error. I can throttle back the number of threads but then my CPU usage is not as high as I would like. I am thinking of creating worker processes rather than worker threads to help avoid the out of memory errors, since doing so would give each thread of execution its own 2 GB of virtual address space (my box has lots of RAM). I am wondering what are the best/easiest methods to communicate the input and output between the processes in .NET? The file system is an obvious choice. I am used to shared memory, named pipes, and such from my UNIX background. Is there a Windows or .NET specific mechanism I should use?

  How can I echo this javascript if the php error messages is called? I have an error message setting that when a user misses his username or password it triggers an error message. The php error message is called by a php code. Here is the code: <?php echo showmessage($msg) ?> I have an alert message in javascript that when called it will make a javascript css pop up alert box. IF the javascript code is present it will show the alert box right away after reload. • Any recommended VC++ settings for better PDB analysis on release builds

  Are there any VC++ settings I should know about to generate better PDB files that contain more information? I have a crash dump analysis system in place based on the project crashrpt. Also, my production build server has the source code installed on the D:\, but my development machine has the source code on the C:\. I entered the source path in the VC++ settings, but when looking through the call stack of a crash, it doesn't automatically jump to my source code. I believe if I had my dev machine's source code on the D:\ it would work.

  Hello, I'm writing an IRCd. For this topic it doesn't really matter if you know much about IRC. Its a simple code style problem. Quick overview of the problem: No message may be longer than 512 characters If the message is more, it must be broken into pieces The NAMES reply sends all the nicknames of users on a channel, and quickly grows beyond 512 characters. I currently concocted this marvelous piece of code, it works perfectly. However, its just not "ruby-like".   Is there a limit to javascript's eval, like in lenght? I'm trying to build an app where you can store JS code in the DB, which you can later load and eval in order to execute it, but i'm reaching a limit. First of all, the code has to all be in one line. Any multiline statements are not executed. Next, i'm reaching a limit in length (i guess). If i execute the code manually, it works, but put that same code in the db, load it via ajax, and try to execute it, and it fails. Any ideas why?

That means I want to define the fields as f=f.Name, instead of as strings. For my specific use I want to encapsulate some code that would decide which of a list of named "OrderBy" expressions should be used based on user input, without writing different code every time.   I am relatively new to all this low level stuff,assembly language.. and want to learn more detail. Why there is a difference between Linux, Windows Assembly languages? As I understand when I compile a C code Operating system does not really produce pure machine or assembly code, it produces OS dependent binary code.But why ? For example when I use a x86 system, CPU only understands x86 ASM am I right?.So Why we dont write pure x86 assembly code and why there are different assembly variations based on Operating system? If we would write pure ASM or OS produce pure ASM there wouldn't be binary compatilibty issues between Operating systems or Not ? I am really wondering all reasons behind them. Any detailed answer, article, book would be great. Thanks.

• C# / Visual Studio - Object is null unless I have a Breakpoint

  Hi Everyone, I'm specifically using the Google Contacts API at the moment, but this could be true of other scinarios as well. I have the following code: Contact newContact = new Contact(); When I let the code run without any breakpoints, I get a NullReferenceException on all of the properties of this object. However, if I put a breakpoint just after this line, I can see all of the properties have been initialises and the rest of my code executes fine. Any idea's would be greatly appreciated
