• Secure LAMP server for production use

  What is the procedure for securing a Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP Server (or even Perl) for production use? Other than setting the MySql password and the root password for linux what other (maybe not so obvious) steps should be taken? Also what steps can I take if I was going to be extra paranoid that may not normally be nessasary? this is for a basic single site use but must be secure. Thank you. (sorry if this was asked before)

• Sendmail ignoring parameters

  We're sending ~60k emails to non-local addresses with sendmail and I manually set the -f flag to [email protected]. This all works fine and dandy when I limit my PHP script to 5000 addresses. If I remove the limitation, sendmail ingnores the parameters and sends all emails with a reply-to and return-path of [email protected]. I'm sleeping in between each email for 500ms, that should not be the problem.

  We have our helpdesk staff making small articles with Interspire Web Pushlisher, and would like to move that system over to Wordpress. Wordpress seems to be able to import data directly from most blogging platforms directly, but IWP is not one of them. Since they are both PHP-based i figure there has to be an easier way than c-c c-v over and over. Any ideas?

  Hi. I have a button that launches the google maps app on my device via an intent. I want to be able to pass it a php page that generates a KML file. I have done this on a website before using the googlemaps api in JS - but it doesn't seem to work on Android. • Phpmyadmin mysql foreign key problem

  Hey guys i'm using phpmyadmin (php & mysql) and i'm having alot of trouble linking the tables using foreign keys. I'm getting negative values for the field countyId (which is the foriegn key). However it is linking to my other table fine and it's cascading fine. • iphone navigation tutorial with simple form

  Hi All, I'm looking to create quite a basic app with a very simple navigation system but each of the tutorials I've come across so far go into too much depth or just involve lots of different form elements. I want to keep it as straight forward and simple as I can. If anyone knows of any tutorials that can show me how to create a root view with say 5 or 6 sub views each displaying a form for collecting different types of data I would be very grateful. • MySql Query lag time?

  When there are multiple PHP scripts running in parallel, each making an UPDATE query to the same record in the same table repeatedly, is it possible for there to be a 'lag time' before the table is updated with each query? I have basically 5-6 instances of a PHP script running in parallel, having been launched via cron. Each script gets all the records in the items table, and then loops through them and processes them. However, to avoid processing the same item more than once, I store the id of the last item being processed in a seperate table. So this is how my code works: function getCurrentItem() { $sql = "SELECT currentItemId from settings"; $result = $this->db->query($sql); return $result->get('currentItemId'); } function setCurrentItem($id) { $sql = "UPDATE settings SET currentItemId='$id'"; $this->db->query($sql); } $currentItem = $this->getCurrentItem(); $sql = "SELECT * FROM items WHERE status='pending' AND id > $currentItem'"; $result = $this->db->query($sql); $items = $result->getAll(); foreach ($items as $i) { //Check if $i has been processed by a different instance of the script, and if so, //leave it untouched. if ($this->getCurrentItem() > $i->id) continue; $this->setCurrentItem($i->id); // Process the item here } But despite of all the precautions, most items are being processed more than once. Which makes me think that there is some lag time between the update queries being run by the PHP script, and when the database actually updates the record. Is it true? And if so, what other mechanism should I use to ensure that the PHP scripts always get only the latest currentItemId even when there are multiple scripts running in parrallel? Would using a text file instead of the db help?

  Hello, I was looking at the pagination script (posted below) and found it to be gros,s and not very good at all especially when trying to customize it. I am trying to put something like this on a separate page like count_page.php and then just include it. I guess my question is, if there is a better way of doing the above with better structure. A better way to go through the db and count the results and display the appropriate numbers. The above seems messy. Thanks for any help or suggestions on this.

• How to improve performance of map that loads new overlay images

  I have inherited a website to maintain that uses a html map overlaying a real map to link specific countries to specific pages. previously it loaded the default map image, then with some javascript it would change the image src to an image with that particular country in a different colour on mouseover and reset the image source back to the original image on mouse out to make maintenance (adding new countries) easier i made the initial map a background image by utilising some CSS for the div tag, and then created new images for each country which only had that countries hightlight so that the images remain fairly small. this works great but theres one issue which is particularly noticeable on slower internet connections when you hover over a country if you dont have the image file in your browser cache or downloaded it wont load the image unless you hover over another country and then back onto the first country - i guess this is due to the image having to manually be downloaded on first hover. My question: is it possible to force the load of these extra images AFTER the page and all the other assets have finished loading so that this behaviour is all but eliminated? the html code for the MAP is as follows: <div class="gtmap"><img id="Image-Maps_6200909211657061" src="<?php echo cdnhttpsCheck(); • Multiple page technique

  Six years ago I wrote an large web application. It was my very first php program, and it grew, and grew. I used a lot of forms, and some very (atrocious) techniques to give an AJAX "look" to the site, and to handle multiple users with various permissions. I am looking to expand this, and sell it to other companies in the field, but I need to seriously modernize it. Currently, it loads index.php where you log in. The user can then select from various "students" or "participants" (We work with people with disabilities). From there, you can select different lesson plans or life skills that are being worked on. There are many other branches as well. At each stage, a different page is served: Sel_Paricipant.php, Sel_Program.php, etc. Are there any fundamental problems with doing it this way? If so, what are some good techniques for eliminating this, so that people only see the TLD in their address bar? Thanks in advance. --Dave

• Can this code cause a "500" internal server error ?

  A few of my customers are reporting that they are getting "500" Internal Server errors lately. I believe it might be caused by various plugins they are using but each time, the hosting company (multiple hosts) are saying that the htaccess file had to be replaced to fix the issue. I'm submitting the code below from my custom theme because its the only place where I trigger an htaccess write. • mysql_real_escape_string() just makes an empty string?

  I am using a jQuery AJAX request to a page called like.php that connects to my database and inserts a row. It seems to just return an empty string, and in my database under the like_message column all I see is blank entries. If I remove mysql_real_escape_string() though, it works fine. • Graceful DOS Command Error-Handling

  PHP 5.2.13 on Windows 2003 I am using the DOS Start /B command to launch a background application using the PHP popen() function: popen("start /B {$_SERVER['HOMEPATH']}/{$app}.exe > {$_SERVER['HOMEPATH']}/bg_output.log 2>&1 & echo $!", 'r'); The popen() function launches a cmd.exe process that runs the specified command; however, if the command fails (e.g. the {$app}.exe doesn't exist or is locked in the above example), the cmd.exe process never returns, and PHP hangs indefinitely as a result. Calling the failing DOS command directly using the Command Prompt results in an Error prompt that requires clicking the OK button. I assume this error confirmation requirement is what's preventing the cmd.exe process from returning to PHP both from the Command Prompt (using both CGI and CLI) and the web (using Apache 2.0 handler w/Apache 2.2). Is there a way to write the DOS command or configure the server or cmd.exe app itself to return the DOS error to the originating call rather than waiting for confirmation?

• Anyone know a good web-based file upload package?

  Basically, what I'm looking for is a place for either one of our end users to be able to upload a file to this package, after either receiving a code from one of our support engineers or vice-versa(our engineers upload a file and send a code/link/something to end user) I've spent a bunch of time googling this, I found this: http://turin.nss.udel.edu/programming/dropbox2/, but the code there scares me, and it also doesn't render properly using PHP 5.3(uses short tags, who knows what else.) Does anyone have any recommendations?
