• Where is a Web Development Career fueled by Passion?

  Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s. Sorry for the stupid title.

• Security for LDAP authentication for Collabnet

  In a previous post, I wrote about how to get LDAP authentication working in Collabnet. By default, all LDAP users are put into the Users role on the server.  For most purposes, this is just fine, and I don’t have a way to change this.  The documentation gives hints that you can add them to other roles, but for now, I don’t have the need. However, adding permissions to different repositories is a different question. To add them, go to the repositories list, select Access Rules and then you can enter in their username, as it sits in Active Directory to the lists for the repositories or for the predefined groups that you have created.  To my knowledge, you cannot use the Active Directory groups in collabnet, which is a big problem.  Needing to micromanage users really limits the usefulness of the LDAP integration. • What most games would benefit from having

  I think I've seen "questions" like this on stackoverflow but sorry if I'm overstepping any bounds. Inspired by my recent question and all the nice answers (Checklist for finished game?) I think every gamedev out there has something he/she thinks that almost every game should have. That knowledge is welcome here! So this is probably going to be an inspirational subjective list of some sorts and the point is that anyone reading this question will see a point or two that they've overlooked in their own development and might benefit from adding. I think a good example might be: "some sort of manual or help section. Of course it should be proportional to how advanced the game is. Some users won't need it and won't go looking for it but the other ones that do will become very frustrated if they can't remember how to do something specific that should be in the manual". A bad example might be "good gameplay". Of course every game benefits from this but the answer is not very helpful.

• Using apt-get from Canada

  I am using Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS, and until yesterday, everything was quite peachy. I have installed several packages (MySQL, apache2) and to my knowledge have those configured correctly. Upon configuration of phpMyAdmin, I found that I was missing the directory path /etc/phpmyadmin, which got me thinking about the install. I am new to Ubuntu, so I guess I missed the message telling me that I did not download phpMyAdmin successfully. Anyway, trying to use apt-get yesterday/today results in "Failed to fetch..." messages, even if just to run sudo apt-get update. Some notable details: ···no GUI, command line only (sudo apt-get gksu fails, go figure) ···can ping 4.2.2.2, so I know the internet is out there (somewhere) ···this is a dedicated computer, using Samba to share files with Windows, which does work ···attempted to edit my /sources.list file, for various American/Canadian mirror, to no effect ···ensured I have correct DNS settings in /etc/networks/interfaces I'm not sure where along the way it happened, but I seem to have lost connections to repositories... :) Any advice (including GO BACK TO WINDOWS) is appreciated.

  I know that this question is already asked here, but I did not find any free IDE like dreamweaver which have facility to view design mode with PHP+HTML code. I am previously worked on windows machine and used dreamweave, now I moved to ubuntu 11.10 and I need IDE like dreamweaver. Currently I have used Geany and Eclipse but none of them has facility of design mode. Is there any add-on available for Geany or Eclipse then please give it link to me. • Cannot upgrade or install 12.04 - Black screen

  An update from 11.10 to 12.04 failed because of a boot into black screen (Nvidia graphics card) after selecting normal boot in Grub (recovery console was available though). I then wiped the whole partition (deleting all proprietary drivers) and tried a fresh install, but could not run the installation cd because it was booting straight into a black screen again. Now I reinstalled 11.10 (and installed proprietary Nvidia driver version 173), and would like to ask 2 questions: 1 - Is there a proven method to fix this problem from the recovery console, so that I can safely try upgrading again (without much knowledge of Ubuntu)? 2 - Is there a website which I could check for updated Nvidia drivers packaged into the upgrade, so that I can safely upgrade without running into a black screen some time later on?

• What language(s) do I need to learn in order to develop an application like this?

  I have an idea for making a web application. Ideally this application would have products which prices are increased each time a Retweet of the product at hand is made. Kind of like bids with tweets. Unfortunately my web development knowledge is very scarce. I know just basic HTML, virtually no CSS and that's it. I'm kindly asking for your insights on what you think would be best for making a web app like this. I have no good idea of where to start or what I need to get going. Microsoft MVP (most valuable professional) title is well known as an honor title for professionals not working for MS directly but who did a lot to popularize MS technologies. This title does not require any certification or any other proof of knowledge by the nominee and is awarded solely upon the one's contribution to community. As a member of Intel Developer Network I am also aware of Intel Black Belt award, that is in many aspects similar to Microsoft MVP. But this is all I know. Are there any other honor awards from top players in software industry?

• Which would a game development company prefer; UDK experience or C++ game projects?

  Which would a game development company prefer? A developer with experience in UDK engine ? or, a developer with projects made entirely in c++ with a graphics engine like Ogre3D? I think that a coder can demonstrate better his abilities with games made in c++, because it requires a knowledge deeper in many fields. However, currently there is a lot of companies that develop his games with UDK. Now I don't know if is better specialize in a game engine like UDK.

• Will Ubuntu be releasing an update for Cedar Trail Processors?

  There is a file available on the Intel web site with the file name "cdv-gfx-drivers-1.0.1_bee.tar.bz2" and a date of July 6, 2012. It can be found by searching the Intel Download Center for the filename or the string "Linux* PowerVR Graphics/Media Drivers". The download page links to the file, release notes and a link, Enabling hardware accelerated playback that takes one to a page containing links to two pdf documents titled "Enabling Hardware Accelerated Playback for Intel® AtomTM Processor N2000/D2000 Series", one for Ubuntu and one for Fedora. The instruction and release notes speak to working with kernel 3.1.0 and since I do not feel I have the skills, knowledge or training to do anything else but, follow the instructions to the "T", I am very reluctant to try anything on my freshly updated 3.2.0 kernel. I would much rather use a Ubuntu supported kernel that applies these drivers and doesn't break anything in the process. Is it a case where this is so new that Canonical has not yet included these drivers but, soon will do so?

• Which is more effective in coding? Reducing line of code and execution of code?

  I have this doubt many years. I am wring some code to achieve some functionality. For example I am writing 20 lines of code to achieve the functionality and my co worker writing the code for the same functionality with just 5 lines. Since he used some looping statement to achieve that, but that code will execute around 30 to 50 times. So which is best way of coding? As per my knowledge I always try to reduce coding length as much I can.

• Need in obtaining a specific local telephone number [closed]

  I am wanting a local phone number that I like. I have found one that I like. When I call the number that I want it says "this number has not been allocated" I have looked up and found the company that owns that number. How do I go about acquiring that number from the company. I spoke with someone who sells major phone packages and he said that if I signed up with them he could get the number for me. He said that there is a change of ownership form that the send to get the number. So I know it can be done. I am hoping that someone with industry specific knowledge in this area can guide me in getting this number.

• Does language endorsement by different platforms (Android, iOS) hurt app development?

  Developing iOS or OSX based applications typically requires knowledge of Objective C, since XCode is highly tailored to this language. Android, on the other hand, has chosen Java as it's preferred language for app development. Now, I know other programming languages can be used to develop applications on either platform, but lets be honest, it's a lot easier (and encouraged) to develop apps using these "native languages." As a new app developer, it seems like it would be much easier if there was a common language and development environment for developing applications on all the major platforms. This thought is probably too idealistic for a programming discussion, and I wouldn't be surprised if the SE vultures flew in to close this topic. But, here's my question. Do you think that language endorsement creates unreasonable barriers to entry for new programmers, or do you think it's beneficial in some way (if so, why) for these platforms to use completely different development environments and languages for app development?

I am working as a PHP Web Developer I like being a crafts man and creating things so that is the reason to combine the programming with web development. • Is it OK to live without knowing how the program you created works?

  I mean, there are really useful libs that can solve problems when you are stuck and do not know how to solve this or that with your knowledge of programing language you use... For example, Boost for C++ or JQuery for JavaScript or Spring for Java... They solve problems in seconds and you do not really care how they did it (despite that they are written in the very same language you are programming in)... So I wonder am I alone use libs not being capable to write solutions for my problems from scratch or its standard practice?

  I'm guessing CMU would teach C and other unmanaged languages (their course listing shows Principles of Functional Programming as a required course for a BSCS), but it's hard to tell from course listings. I'm looking into applying there, where I have an OK chance of getting in , as well as some other mid-to high tier CS schools. I'm wondering how you can tell if a school mainly teaches Java or goes into C/C++. Everyone says (and I agree, from my current programming knowledge) that learning Java in college exclusively is a bad idea, so I'm hoping to avoid ending up at a 'Javaschool.'

• How do I install OSQA with limited access to the server?

  I would very much like to install OSQA on my host (provided/owned by my friend), but I can not make heads or tails of how I would go about doing it; a lot of the dependancies and such can't be installed with the current level of access (or most probably just knowledge) that I have. I can provide any further information required, and attempt to contact (friend) to see if he can do any of it for me, but I'm unsure as to how often I will be able to contact him. exec and shell_exec are not disabled on the server. If there are any other alternatives that I could use, please let me know! I tried Qwench but that was pretty buggy. I can usually deal with these kind of things, but this is my first foray into Python stuff!
