  • Unique element ID, even if element doesn't have one

    - by Robert J. Walker
    I'm writing a GreaseMonkey script where I'm iterating through a bunch of elements. For each element, I need a string ID that I can use to reference that element later. The element itself doesn't have an id attribute, and I can't modify the original document to give it one (although I can make DOM changes in my script). I can't store the references in my script because when I need them, the GreaseMonkey script itself will have gone out of scope. Is there some way to get at an "internal" ID that the browser uses, for example? A Firefox-only solution is fine; a cross-browser solution that could be applied in other scenarios would be awesome. Edit: If the GreaseMonkey script is out of scope, how are you referencing the elements later? They GreaseMonkey script is adding events to DOM objects. I can't store the references in an array or some other similar mechanism because when the event fires, the array will be gone because the GreaseMonkey script will have gone out of scope. So the event needs some way to know about the element reference that the script had when the event was attached. And the element in question is not the one to which it is attached. Can't you just use a custom property on the element? Yes, but the problem is on the lookup. I'd have to resort to iterating through all the elements looking for the one that has that custom property set to the desired id. That would work, sure, but in large documents it could be very time consuming. I'm looking for something where the browser can do the lookup grunt work. Wait, can you or can you not modify the document? I can't modify the source document, but I can make DOM changes in the script. I'll clarify in the question. Can you not use closures? Closuses did turn out to work, although I initially thought they wouldn't. See my later post. It sounds like the answer to the question: "Is there some internal browser ID I could use?" is "No."

  • Communicate between content script and options page

    - by Gaurang Tandon
    I have seen many questions already and all are about background page to content script. Summary My extension has an options page, and a content script. The content script handles the storage functionality (chrome.storage manipulation). Whenever, a user changes a setting in the options page, I want to send a message to the content script to store the new data. My code: options.js var data = "abcd"; // let data chrome.tabs.query({ active: true, currentWindow: true }, function (tabs) { chrome.tabs.sendMessage(tabs[0].id, "storeData:" + data, function(response){ console.log(response); // gives undefined :( }); }); content script js chrome.runtime.onMessage.addListener(function(request, sender, sendResponse) { // not working }); My question: Why isn't the approach not working? Is there any other (better) approach for this procedure.

  • JQuery: can I submit values from inputs that aren't in a form?

    - by Alvaro
    Simple as that: I have some inputs that are rendered inside another form element, but I want to submit then individually. I tried "serializing" the div that contains them, but it didn't work. Is there an easy way to do this? My code: var form = $("#my_div"); var get_data = $(form).serialize(); /* Get #my_div inputs value */ $.get(self.url_form_rendering, get_data, function (data){ /* handle server response */ }) Serialize returns "", any ideas that don't involve redesigning the layout to avoid form nesting?

  • Function inside jquery returns undefined

    - by steamboy
    Hello Guys, The function I called inside jquery returns undefined. I checked the function and it returns correct data when I firebugged it. function addToPlaylist(component_type,add_to_pl_value,pl_list_no) { add_to_pl_value_split = add_to_pl_value.split(":"); $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "ds/index.php/playlist/check_folder", data: "component_type="+component_type+"&value="+add_to_pl_value_split[1], success: function(msg) { if(msg == 'not_folder') { if(component_type == 'video') { rendered_item = render_list_item_video(add_to_pl_value_split[0],add_to_pl_value_split[1],pl_list_no) } else if(component_type == 'image') { rendered_item = render_list_item_image(add_to_pl_value_split[0],add_to_pl_value_split[1],pl_list_no) } } else { //List files from folder folder_name = add_to_pl_value_split[1].replace(' ','-'); var x = msg; // json eval('var file='+x); var rendered_item; for ( var i in file ) { //console.log(file[i]); if(component_type == 'video') { rendered_item = render_list_item_video(folder_name+'-'+i,file[i],pl_list_no) + rendered_item; } if(component_type == 'image') { rendered_item = render_list_item_image(folder_name+'-'+i,file[i],pl_list_no) + rendered_item; } } } $("#files").html(filebrowser_list); //Reload Playlist console.log(rendered_item); return rendered_item; }, error: function() { alert("An error occured while updating.   • What is the scope of JS variables in anonymous functions

    - by smorhaim
    Why does this code returns $products empty? If I test for $products inside the function it does show data... but once it finishes I can't seem to get the data. var $products = new Array(); connection.query($sql, function(err, rows, fields) { if (err) throw err; for(i=0; i< rows.length; i++) { $products[rows[i].source_identifier] = "xyz"; } }); connection.end(); console.log($products); // Shows empty.

  • How to display part of an image for the specific width and height?

    - by Brady Chu
    Recently I participated in a web project which has a huge large of images to handle and display on web page, we know that the width and height of images end users uploaded cannot be control easily and then they are hard to display. At first, I attempted to zoom in/out the images to rearch an appropriate presentation, and I made it, but my boss is still not satisfied with my solution, the following is my way: var autoResizeImage = function(maxWidth, maxHeight, objImg) { var img = new Image(); img.src = objImg.src; img.onload = function() { var hRatio; var wRatio; var Ratio = 1; var w = img.width; var h = img.height; wRatio = maxWidth / w; hRatio = maxHeight / h; if (maxWidth == 0 && maxHeight == 0) { Ratio = 1; } else if (maxWidth == 0) { if (hRatio < 1) { Ratio = hRatio; } } else if (maxHeight == 0) { if (wRatio < 1) { Ratio = wRatio; } } else if (wRatio < 1 || hRatio < 1) { Ratio = (wRatio <= hRatio ? wRatio : hRatio); } if (Ratio < 1) { w = w * Ratio; h = h * Ratio; } w = w <= 0 ? 250 : w; h = h <= 0 ? 370 : h; objImg.height = h; objImg.width = w; }; }; This way is only intended to limit the max width and height for the image so that every image in album still has different width and height which are still very urgly. And right at this minute, I know we can create a DIV and use the image as its background image, this way is too complicated and not direct I don't want to take. So I's wondering whether there is a better way to display images with the fixed width and height without presentation distortion? Thanks.

  • Colour manipulation of custom tags in niceEdit HTML editor ( JS / DOM )

    - by Chris
    Hi, I would like to be able to highlight, during typing and in real time, certain custom tags in the format #tag_name# within the text of a nicEdit instance ( http://nicedit.com/ ). My current attempt to implement as close to this as possible revolves around using the blur event of the editor to highlight the tags once the editor loses focus. I then use the following logic to wrap the tags in a span with a highlight class.. htmlEditor.addEvent( "blur", function( ) { str = nicEditors.findEditor( "html_content" ).getContent( ); // Remove existing spans first, leaving just the tag ( this could mess up if the html has been edited directly ) str = str.replace( /(<span class=\"highlight\">)(.[^<]+)(<\/span>)/gi, "$2" ); // Then wrap all instances of a particular tag with the highlight span str = str.replace( /#tag_name#/gi, "<span class='highlight'>#tag_name#</span>" ); nicEditors.findEditor( "html_content" ).setContent( str ); }); This is not ideal as my actual text now contains unwanted spans ( I only want the highlighting for the user's input experience, not to be saved to the database ). Obviously I could remove the spans before saving the text but the whole system is currently open to errors ( If the html is directly edited then other text may get highlighted etc ). What I would like to know is.. Is there any way to directly change the colour of the tags in the editor or DOM without using a mechanism such as this? Perhaps a way of colouring the text in memory rather than changing the HTML ? Any ideas ? Regards Chris P

  • Why does the jQuery on this page work for Internet Explorer 8, but nothing else?

    - by Ben McCormack
    I made a web page that uses jQuery: http://benmccormack.com/demo/MichaelMassPsalm/Psalm16Mode5.html When you change the selection in the combo box from Higher Key to Lower Key, all of the music images are supposed to change their source to be images that represent the lower key signature. This works great in IE8, but it won't work in Safari, Firefox, or Chrome. Why not? Here's the jQuery code that I'm using: $(document).ready(function () { $("#musicKey").change(function (event) { if ($("#musicKey").val() * 1) { $("img[src*='Low'").each(function (index) { $(this).attr("src", $(this).attr("src").replace("Low", "High")); }); } else { $("img[src*='High'").each(function (index) { $(this).attr("src", $(this).attr("src").replace("High", "Low")); }); } }); });

  • Capture reload/endrequest event after server redirect to download file

    - by Prutswonder
    Inside a webpage I have an Excel download button, which redirects to a webpage that serves the requested Excel file via the application/ms-excel MIME type, which usually results in a file download in the browser. In the webpage, I have the following jQuery code: $(document).ready(function () { $(".div-export .button").click(function () { setBusy(true); }); Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_endRequest(function () { setBusy(false); }); }); Which displays a busy animation while the user waits for the Excel file to be served. Problem is: The animation doesn't end (setBusy(false);) after the file download, because the endRequest event doesn't get fired, probably because of the server redirect. Does anyone have a workaround for this? Edit: The download button is handled in an UpdatePanel.

  • Client/JS Framework for "Unsaved Data" Protection?

    - by Kevin Dostalek
    Hey all- we have a typical web application that is essentially a data entry application with lots of screens some of which have some degree of complexity. We need to provide that standard capability on making sure if the user forgets to click the "Save" button before navigating away or closing their browser they get a warning and can cancel (but only when there is unsaved or dirty data). I know the basics of what I've got to do-- in fact I'm sure I've done it all before over the years (tie in to onbeforeunload, track the "dirty" state of the page, etc...) but before I embark on coding this YET AGAIN, does anyone have some suggestions for libraries already out there (free or otherwise) that will help out? Thanks!

  • Tinymce mceToggleEditor scroll/focus issue

    - by Lizard
    I have 50+ textareas that I am using tinyMCE with. Instead of loading each one I am just initialising them, then activing them later on request Initialisation tinyMCE.init({ mode : "none", theme : "advanced", theme_advanced_buttons1 : "", theme_advanced_buttons2 : "", theme_advanced_buttons3 : "", theme_advanced_toolbar_location : false, theme_advanced_toolbar_align : "left", theme_advanced_statusbar_location : false, theme_advanced_resizing : true, auto_focus : false }); Edit Observer $('ul span.edit-details').click(function () { var id = this.id; id = id.replace('edit-',''); tinyMCE.execCommand('mceToggleEditor',false,'editor-'+id); }); UPDATE I have also tried $('ul span.edit-details').click(function () { var id = this.id; id = id.replace('edit-',''); if($('#details-'+id).is(":hidden")) { $('#details-'+id).show(); tinyMCE.execCommand('mceAddControl',false,'editor-'+id); } else { $('#details-'+id).hide(); tinyMCE.execCommand('mceRemoveControl',false,'editor-'+id); } }); The problem I have is that when tinyMCE.execCommand('mceToggleEditor',false,'editor-'+id); fires the pages focuses/scrolls to that textarea, even if it is already in the viewport. Any suggestions on how to stop this? Thanks!

  • Why does the Chrome spacing work in one JS file and not the other?

    - by Matrym
    If you highlight and copy the text in the first paragraph on this page, then paste it into a rich text editor (dreamweaver or gmail in rich text mode), you will see that some of the text is automagically linked. Basically, it works: http://seox.org/link-building-pro.html -- http://seox.org/lbp/old-pretty.js I'm trying to build a second version, but somewhere along the way I broke it. If you go along with the same process on this new url, spacing before and after the link are removed in Chrome: http://seox.org/test.html -- http://seox.org/lbp/lb-core.js Why does the spacing work correctly in the first one, but not in the second? More importantly, how do I fix the second one so that it doesn't bug out? I asked a variation of this question before, and got a helpful and interesting answer, but hopefully I've asked the question with full detail this time around. Thanks in advance for your time! Edit: I've added a bounty to this post, and would greatly appreciate precise instructions on how to fix the bug (rather than general suggestions. To better illustrate the bug, I've copied the gray box (from the second page) below. Note how the spacing is removed before and after the a tags: Link Building 2 is an amazing tool that helps your website visitors share your content, with proper attribution. It connects to email, social sharing sites, eCommerce sites, and is the<a href="http://seox.org/test.html#seo">SEO</a>'s best friend. Think of it as the sneeze in the viral marketing metaphor. <div> <p id="credit"><br /> Read more about<a href="http://seox.org/test.html">Text Citations</a>by<a href="http://seox.org">seox.org</a></p> </div>
