• Why do i keep forgetting things? [closed]

  I am currently learning many things at the same time in C++ and coded many data structures and algorithms and some small applications. When I suddenly try to remember something that I coded many months ago, my mind completely goes blank. It's like I'll have to re-learn the whole thing. For example, recently I was thinking to refactor my BST data structure, when I realized that I don't even remember how I coded it or how does it works internally. Does this happen with many others? Or is it me only? How do I overcome this problem?

• Change administrator username

  I have accidentally typed my name wrong when I created the administrator account. Although I managed to change the user name at the login screen, I am unable to rename the /home/oldusername to /home/newusername. I tried most of the online tutorials, and it failed. The code I tried was this: usermod -l newusername -m -d /home/newusername oldusername But the output is: cannot lock /etc/passwd; try again later. How can I fix the issue and change the folder to newusername and expect all the applications to work as before?

  I would like to know why you decided to build your own framework in your company. By framework, I don't mean few libraries you use often. I mean a specific way of building applications on top of it, with base classes, convention, etc. So why did you built your own framework? How could you justify that to the person that employs you. Have you measure the positive and negative impact of it? Regarding your experiences, did you notice that in some case a company framework produced real benefits, or on the other hand, increased costs of development (learning curve, debugging, maintenance, ...)?

  I am well versed in the basics of Java programming, although through most of my career I have been maintaining, upgrading, and debugging someone else's Java code. I am mainly familiar with basic servlet applications. I have a strong beginner knowledge of Maven and Ant. I have more web development with Ruby on Rails, but would like to bring my Java skills up to par with regard to web development. It seems the world of Java is so big, I have no idea what the next logical step is for me. Spring? JAX-RB? EJBs? What is the next logical step for someone like me and how would you recommend I approach it?

• What are the default layout settings in gnome-terminal?

  I want to replace gnome-terminal fully by lxterminal. I've started by changing the default terminal emulator. So I ran sudo update-alternatives --config x-terminal-emulator, and chose lxterminal. After that, I ran dconf-editor and went to org - gnome - desktop - applications - terminal and changed gnome-terminal to lxterminal and removed the -x in the exec arg part. The only problem though, is that by default, lxterminal doesn't look like gnome-terminal. What are gnome-terminal's default layout settings? I'm especially looking for the hexadecimal colour codes for both text and background.

• Reasons to use C++ ?

  I've read here and in other places that learning C++, C or other low level languages are a must to get a more low level perspective on development. I agree with this, but I find it hard to find a reason to use C++ over C# or similar languages. Most of the work I do is web based, so there's no need for C++ there. Other work is windows based, and most things work fine in C# there, so what sort of situation could I use C++? I don't do any high performance stuff, nor do I create games, mostly business applications. I'm looking for an excuse to expand on my C++ knowledge but I need some motivation other than 'because the internet said I should'.

  I am looking to create a job post to get a satisfactory assistant programmer / templater. Specifically, a php & web programmer. I am, however, afraid of forgetting important things. So, are there resources you can suggest for templates for things to ask and things to tell in a job post for a programmer? Surprisingly, I wasn't able to find similar questions on this site, so there may be duplicate questions out there that I could use but just didn't find. Right now I know that my -requirements- are so generic that they're going to get me in trouble with a spam of applications. e.g. the candidate must know php, must be able to seperate php from html. So I'm looking for criteria that are must-haves, must-mentions, or a general template to try to avoid a "lemon". • exchange live feed with pre-recorded video for wireless internet camera to router

  I wasn't sure if this should be asked in Web Applications, or Network Engineering, or what... Long story short, I have a video camera with mic that is wirelessly connected to a router (NETGEAR R6200), which can then be viewed through an online service. I would like to be able to somehow exchange the live feed with a pre-recorded video, or image, preferably with pre-recorded sound (the sound of silence would be easiest). Can I place this inbetween the camera and the router, do I need to redirect the camera feed to my laptop first, and then push out the fake video/audio onto the router, without the service knowing the difference?   I previously never bothered with it. but I just did a fresh install of 12.04 and figured "hey maybe i'll put in my google account and see what happens" I logged in with google and everyting like mal/calendar/contacts/chat is set to "on"... I figured it might automatically set up my gmail for various applications like empathy and thunderbird.. but I opened them up and found nothing... What exactly is the purpose of adding your account to "online accounts"? where is it used?

• Algorithm development in jobs

  I have a mathematics background but also consider career in some form of software development. In particular I'm interested in finding out what sort of industries are most likely to have more algorithm development/mathematical and logical problem solving slant rather than pure application development etc. Obviously, I'm assuming that some subset of the canonical data structures and associated algorithms (trees, lists, hash tables, sets, maps with search, insert, traversals etc.) are mostly going to be present in software development. However, where am I more likely to encounter problems of more discrete maths nature (combinatorial, graph theory, sets, strings, ...) explicitly or more likely in disguise. Any pointers much appreciated (including possible open source projects that I could use for my further search for applications and also possibly contribute to).

  I'm new to Ubuntu and recently installed CrossOver Games Trial on Ubuntu 12.04, didn't like it, tried to uninstall it but simply refused to go away , so I just went on and deleted the folders in the File System. Problem is that now there are 4 icons left on the Unity Start Panel under "installed applications", and I don´t know how to remove it. Actually, could anyone tell me how to delete any shortcut that is created on the Start Panel? Is there a way to do it? Thank you very much!

  My dissertation is about developing a tool for testing mobile applications from the GUI. Primary device is Android, but it should support Blackberry or iOs etc. I found some frameworks using Google, e.g MonkeyTalk. I am not so sure, but what I want to develop might be a mini MonkeyTalk, with minimal functionality, focused on the GUI of the application(s) to be tested. My questions: What framework(s)? I am good with Java. Can I use the xUnit family for this, and how? What should I be reading/studying? Any suggestions, links for tutorials, documentations, howtos, etc., would be very helpful.
