• Dual monitors with one above the other?

- by Felix
I'm using Gnome 3 and proprietary Nvidia drivers. I have tried to set in nvidia-settings my external monitor to be "above" my main one (it's a laptop). However, when I try to drag a window up from the main display to the external one, it gets stuck and can't move past a certain point. Trying to maximize it changes its decoration so it looks maximized (i.e. no borders, etc), but its size or position doesn't change. Now, if I set my external monitor to be "to the left" of the main one, it works, which is why I'm suspecting this is a Gnome issue, not an Nvidia one. Anyone know how to fix this? Update: some versions: Gnome: 3.2.2.1 Nvidia: 280.13 Update 2: I can see that Gnome 3.4 is out, and among the release notes is better external monitor support. However, they only mention a small fix that is unrelated to my problem. Can anyone with Gnome 3.4 and access to an external monitor please test this out and tell me if it works? I don't want to go through the hassle of upgrading my Ubuntu installation unless I know for certain it's going to fix the problem.

• JEOS

- by john.graves(at)oracle.com
JEOS stands for Just Enough Operating System. It is great environment for building virtual machines without all the clutter of a windowing system, games, office products, etc. It is from Ubuntu and you install it using the Ubuntu server install, but rather than picking a standard install, press F4 and choose “Install a minimal system.” Note: The “Install a minimal virtual machine” is specific to VMWare and I plan to use VirtualBox. Be sure to include Open SSH in the install so that it installs sshd. *** Also, if you plan to install XE, you’ll need to modify the partitions to have a larger swap space (at least 1.5 G). *** Once the install is done, I find it useful to install a few other items. Update Ubuntu apt-get update Install some other tools apt-get openjdk-6-jre Yes, java will be included in any of the WebLogic installs, but I need this one if I want to do remote display (for config wizards, etc). apt-get gcc Some apps require to rebuild the kernel modules, so you’ll need a basic compiler. Install guest additions (Choose the VirtualBox Devices->Install Guest Additions…” option. This sets up a /dev/cdrom or /dev/cdrom1. You’ll need to manually mount this temporarily: sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt Then run the linux .bin file. Update nofile limits. Most java apps fail with the standard ubuntu settings: edit /etc/security/limits.conf and add these lines at the end: * soft nofile 65535 * hard nofile 65535 root soft nofile 65535 root hard nofile 65535 These numbers are very high and I wouldn’t do this on a production system, but for this environment it is fin. To get rid of the annoying piix error on boot, add the following line to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file blacklist i2c_piix4

• Account Listings on APress and O'Reilly

- by TATWORTH
Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/TATWORTH/archive/2013/06/20/e-books-from-apress-and-oreilly.aspxIn recent days both APress and O'Reilly have radically improved the way they display items registered against your account with them.APress now show only one line per e-book and the multitude of formats is handled by a drop-down list. The result is that the list of APress books I have bought now requires less paging through. The only things that the APress lacks are:The ability to show all on the page (currently options for 10,20 and 50 per page)The ability to sort on title or date bought or date updatedO'Reilly have always shown the formats available by a series of hyperlinks along one line. They have improved their list as follows:You can sort on title or date bought or date updatedClicking on a line shows full detail of the item (include image, download details, errata link and catalog page). Clicking again collapses the detail. You can select all your purchased items together or just show E-Books or Print or VideosNow why is the date updated important? Updates are issued for various books (particularly those made available whilst still being written) - the publishers very kindly email you when an update is available but finding it in the list to download it again is not as easy as you think, however sort on release date and they are easy to find!

• How do I get my programs to communicate with each other

- by Benjamin Lindqvist
I'm basically just getting started with programming. The problem I have with progressing is that I have a hard time learning stuff just for the sake of knowing them - I do better when there's a problem to be solved or a task to be completed so I can learn 'on the job'. So I'm interested in starting some interesting project. I know the basics of Python, Java, Matlab and some C++ aswell and I know enough about microcontrollers to make LED blink etc. The type of stuff I'm looking for is for example scraping some weather forecast site (with Python) and outputting the chance of rain to a LCD display, or a program that makes chrome open and log in to facebook if I say "HAL, time for facebook", or more generally, a program that reads serial/USB input, looks for certain sequences and sends instructions to some other program if it finds one. Do you open some kind of shared stream in which one program reads and one writes? What do I need to read up on to do accomplish this myself? I have no experience with linux or the linux terminal, but looking over peoples shoulders makes me suspect that's what people use. Is that correct?

• Will search engines discover that our old pages have been 301 redirected if there are no more links to them in the old site?

- by Obay
We've moved our website to a new domain. Thousands of our pages come from one PHP file in the old site (e.g. oldsite.com/news.php?id=
). So we added some code in news.php file to do a 301 redirect to the specific corresponding news article in the new website (newsite.com/news/
). We have not yet done a 301 redirect for the root of the old site (so we could display a notice to our users that we've moved), but all links inside it are already 301 redirected. My concern is that, when Google crawls our old website, it will no longer be able to find the old news articles and discover that they have been 301 Redirected -- is this correct? If so, does that mean our PageRank won't be carried over to the new site? I've also read that we would need to create a sitemap for the new site. Is it possible to indicate in the sitemap the old and new locations of specific pages? Because if not, how will Google know? (I'm not sure change of address in Webmaster Tools would be specific enough).

• "This file came from another computer..." - how can I unblock all the files in a folder without having to unblock them individually?

- by Schnapple
Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista have this deal where zone information is preserved in downloaded files to NTFS partitions, such that it blocks certain files in certain applications until you "unblock" the files. So for example if you download a zip file of source code to try something out, every file will display this in the security settings of the file properties "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer" Along with an "Unblock" button. Some programs don't care, but Visual Studio will refuse to load projects in solutions until they've been unblocked. While it's not terribly difficult to go to every project file and unblock it individually, it's a pain. And it does not appear you can unblock multiple selected files simultaneously. Is there any way to unblock all files in a directory without having to go to them all individually? I know you can turn this off globally for all new files but let's say I don't want to do that

• Why does Apache ignore my Directory block?

- by Codemonkey
I just moved my projects into a new workstation. I'm having trouble getting my Apache installation to acknowledge my .htaccess files. This is my /etc/apache2/conf.d/dev config file: <Directory /home/codemonkey/dev/myproject/> Options -Indexes AllowOverride All Order Allow,Deny Deny from all </Directory> I know the config file is being included by Apache because it complains if I put erroneous syntax in it (Action 'configtest' fails). My project is reachable through Apache by a symlink in the /var/www directory. The server is running with my user and group, so it has my permissions. My entire dev folder has permissions set to 770 recursively. Despite all this, I'm still getting an indexed display of my project folder when I visit http://localhost/myproject. Why isn't the above config making it impossible to view the folder in the browser?

• Minimize Apps to the System Tray in Windows with MoveToTray

- by Asian Angel
Would you like an easy way to minimize apps to the System Tray in Windows and keep your Taskbar clear of clutter? Then all you need is the MoveToTray app to make it happen. MoveToTray does not require installation. Just double click on the exe file or create a shortcut to the app to activate it. When you see the icon for MoveToTray appear in the System Tray you are ready to minimize those apps. To minimize the active app window use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + Alt + M” and watch it instantly disappear to the System Tray. To maximize the window simply double click on the app’s icon in the System Tray. Sometimes an app’s regular icon will not display in the System Tray and a copy of MoveToTray’s icon will appear in its’ place (i.e. Paint.NET in our example). Note: There may occasionally be an app that will not minimize to the System Tray. Only one (CubicExplorer) would not minimize during our tests. • How to get uncaught PHP errors from fcgi server

- by jason
My web hosting company recently replaced suPHP with fcgi on my dedicated server because I needed opcode functionality. Since then I see loads of 500 errors in apache error and php error log is empty. I have no way to figure out whats the root cause. One reason I found out was time out so my hosting company changed FcgidConnectTimeout and FcgidIOTimeout to a value of 200. I believe there are no more timeout errors in my php script. My question is how do I capture PHP error before 500 internal server error page display to user? • Problem graphics with ATI Radeon x1270 (RS690M) on Ubuntu 12.04

- by Giuseppe Della Corte
I'm Italian and so I apologize for my English! I'm a beginner to Ubuntu and I tried it on my desktop PC and it's fantastic, fast and fun! I decided to try it on my netbook Packard Bell DOT M/A and this is the configuration: AMD Athlon L110 1.2GHz 2GB of RAM ATI Radeon x1270 (RS690M) 150GB Hard Disk I installed Ubuntu 12.04 with Wubi (dualboot Windows 7 + Ubuntu 12.04), because the netbook does not have a DVD player! During the installation everything is OK, after it was installed I see mistakes in the graphical display! I see objects that are seen in different colors and moving (buttons, mouse pointer, text bar ... etc ...) At one point came not to see anything, such as this screenshot: The drivers are open, that is already installed in Ubuntu. Windows 7 video card runs fine, can run well Aero (transparent window effects), I can watch movies in HD and play some games with the Catalyst drivers from AMD. Now I ask a favor, you can help me solve this problem? Is there a fix for this driver or drivers different on the Internet? Thanks for your attention, good bye!

• Ubuntu: Alternative task-switcher to what is provided in compiz

- by user22106
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and really enjoying it. The task switcher default in Ubuntu shows a list of small icons for each running app much like the windows task switcher. It's fast and effective. I enabled Compiz and noticed that the task switcher changed to one with small thumbnails showing a smaller version of each window. Nice, but it slows the task manager down to about 0.5 seconds to display, which for me is far too long. Have googled the forums and it's a very common problem with ubuntu/compiz. I want to run compiz as it provides so many other features, but the slow task switcher is just not going to run with me. So was wondering if there is some way of NOT letting compiz override the task switcher, or, if there is some other task switcher that I can install which will not be slow like the compiz one. Any help would be appreciated.

• Extension GLX missing...on a desktop PC

- by Bart van Heukelom
I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a new PC with an Nvidia GTX 560 graphics card, but after installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers (either -current or -current-updates), Unity won't start. When trying to start it manually I get the message "extension GLX missing". I've searched around and found results like this question which point out it's a problem with Nvidia Optimus laptops. However, I don't have this problem on a laptop, but on a desktop PC. lshw output for the graphics card: *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: GF114 [GeForce GTX 560 SE] vendor: NVIDIA Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0 version: a1 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=nouveau latency=0 resources: irq:16 memory:f4000000-f5ffffff memory:e0000000-e7ffffff memory:e8000000-ebffffff ioport:e000(size=128) memory:f6000000-f607ffff and CPU: *-cpu description: CPU product: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz vendor: Intel Corp. physical id: 40 bus info: cpu@0 version: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz slot: SOCKET 0 size: 1600MHz capacity: 3800MHz width: 64 bits clock: 100MHz capabilities: x86-64 fpu fpu_exception wp vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe syscall nx rdtscp constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts rep_good nopl xtopology nonstop_tsc aperfmperf pni pclmulqdq dtes64 monitor ds_cpl vmx est tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr pdcm pcid sse4_1 sse4_2 popcnt tsc_deadline_timer aes xsave avx f16c rdrand lahf_lm ida arat epb xsaveopt pln pts dtherm tpr_shadow vnmi flexpriority ept vpid fsgsbase smep erms cpufreq configuration: cores=4 enabledcores=4 threads=4

• Switching DVI socket

- by lurscher
I have Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 with Nvidia 9800 gt and Nvidia driver version 270.41.06 My video card has two DVI sockets, but I only use the single monitor configuration. • Any advantage to the script version of Google Adwords' conversion tracking code?

- by ripper234
Google Adword has an HTML snippet to track conversions:

It is composed of two parts: For clients supporting javascript, an inline script that sets variables, plus loading a reporting script. For other clients, an image tag. As far as I can see, the image tag has some advantages: It works on all browsers. It is asynchronous. It's shorter to have only this version, compared to both this and the js version. Any reason not to drop the tag and just use the image conversion snippet directly?

• Pixelated PDF in Apple Preview slideshow mode, but not in regular window

- by Zack
I have a PDF which is a presentation exported from OpenOffice. Two of the slides in this presentation have embedded .eps graphs. When I run the presentation using Preview's slideshow mode, the graphs are severely aliased and the axes are illegible. But when I just view the PDF in regular windowed mode, the graphs are properly antialiased and legible. Is there any way to get Preview to do the same display that it does in windowed mode, but in fullscreen (no window title, no menu bar)? (I don't want to just run the presentation from OpenOffice, because OpenOffice shows the same horrible aliasing effects plus it takes about 30 seconds to show the slide. I don't have, and don't want, Acrobat or MS Office. However, please do feel free to suggest other programs for doing PDF-based slideshows.)

• With Slick, how to change the resolution during gameplay?

I can already change to fullscreen and back to windowed, this was pretty simple... //"fullScreenOption" is a checkbox-like button. if (fullScreenOption.isMouseOver(mouseX, mouseY)) { if (input.isMouseButtonDown(Input.MOUSE_LEFT_BUTTON)) { fullScreenOption.state = !fullScreenOption.state; container.setFullscreen(fullScreenOption.state); } } But the container class (Implemented by Slick, not me), contrary to my previous beliefs, does not seem to have any resolution-change functions! And that's pretty much the situation...I know it's possible, but i don't know how to do it, nor what is the class responsible! The AppGameContainer class, used on the very start of the game's initialization, is the only place with any functions for changing the display-mode that I've found so far, but it's only used at the very start, and i haven't found a way to travel back to it from my options menu. //This is my implementation of it... public static void main(String[] args) throws SlickException { AppGameContainer app = new AppGameContainer(new Main()); // app.setTargetFrameRate(60); app.setVSync(true); app.setDisplayMode(800, 600, false); app.start(); } I can define it as a static global on the Main, but it's probably a (very) bad way to do it...

• canvas tile grid, hover effects, single tilesheet, etc

- by user121730
I'm currently in the process of building both the client and server side of an html5, canvas, and WebSocket game. This is what I have thus far for the client: http://jsfiddle.net/dDmTf/7/ Current obstacles The hover effect has no idea what to put back after the mouse leaves. Currently it's just drawing a "void" tile, but I can't figure out how to redraw a single tile without redrawing the whole map. How would I go about storing multiple layers within the map variable? I was considering just using a multi-dimensional array for each layer (similar to what you see as the current array), and just iterating through it, but is that really an efficient way of doing it? Side note The tile sheet being used for the jsfiddle display is only for development. I'll be replacing it as things progress in the engine. I hope you can help! Hopefully you guys can help me, I've been struggling to get through things, since I'm learning how things kind of stuff works as I go. If you guys have any pointers for my JavaScript, feel free. As I'm more or less learning advanced usage as I go, I'm sure I'm doing plenty of things wrong. Note: I will continue to update this post as the engine improves, but updating the jsfiddle link and updating the obstacles list by striking things that have been solved, or adding additions. Thanks!

• MRTG: Switch Port Throughput

- by amazinghorse24
I currently have MRTG running in a Debian box. It currently polls a Netgear Switch for the speeds of 7 or so ports and then makes the graphs of them. It currently only records the bits/sec. I would like to set up MRTG to record and display the total amount of data that has gone through the port, not just the speed of it. I am somewhat new to MIBS and SNMP and so I need some help. The switch is a Netgear GS748AT and am not quite sure where to find the MIBS for it, or which MIBS I need to accomplish my task. Any and all help is appreciated!

• JBox2D applyLinearImpulse doesn't work

- by Romeo
So i have this line of code: if(input.isKeyDown(Input.KEY_W)&&canJump()) { body.applyLinearImpulse(new Vec2(0, 30), cam.screenToWorld(body.getPosition())); System.out.println("I can jump!"); } My problem is that the console display I can jump! but the body doesn't do that. Can you explain to me if i do something wrong? Some more code. This function creates my 'hero' the one supposed to jump. private Body setDynamic(float width, float height, float x, float y) { PolygonShape shape = new PolygonShape(); shape.setAsBox(width/2, height/2); BodyDef bd = new BodyDef(); bd.allowSleep = true; bd.position = new Vec2(cam.screenToWorld(new Vec2(x + width / 2, y + height / 2))); bd.type = BodyType.DYNAMIC; bd.userData = new BodyInfo(width, height); Body body = world.createBody(bd); body.createFixture(shape, 10); return body; } And this is the main update loop: if(input.isKeyDown(Input.KEY_A)) { body.setLinearVelocity(new Vec2(-10*delta, body.getLinearVelocity().y)); } else if (input.isKeyDown(Input.KEY_D)) { body.setLinearVelocity(new Vec2(10*delta, body.getLinearVelocity().y)); } else { body.setLinearVelocity(new Vec2(0, body.getLinearVelocity().y)); } if(input.isKeyDown(Input.KEY_W)&&canJump()) { body.applyLinearImpulse(new Vec2(0, 30), body.getPosition()); System.out.println("I can jump!"); } world.step(delta * 0.001f, 10, 5); }

• Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 5)

- by hinkmond
So, here's the finished product. I have 8 networked Raspberry Pi devices strategically placed around our Oracle Santa Clara Building 21 office. I attached a JFET transistor based EMF sensor on each device to capture any strange fluctuations in the electromagnetic field (which supposedly, paranormal spirits can change as they pass by). And, I have have a Web app (embedded in this page) which can take the readings and show a graphical display in real-time. As you can see, all the Raspberry Pi devices are blinking away green, indicating they are all operational and all sensors are working correctly. But, I don't see anything... Darn... Maybe, I have to stare at the Web app for a while. I don't know when the "alleged" ghosts in our Oracle Santa Clara office are supposed to be active, but let me know if you see anything... Oh, and by the way, Happy Halloween from the Internet of Spooky Things! • How do I log file system read/writes by filename in Linux?

- by Casey
I'm looking for a simple method that will log file system operations. It should display the name of the file being accessed or modified. I'm familiar with powertop, and it appears this works to an extent, in so much that it show the user files that were written to. Is there any other utilities that support this feature. Some of my findings: powertop: best for write access logging, but more focused on CPU activity iotop: shows real time disk access by process, but not file name lsof: shows the open files per process, but not real time file access iostat: shows the real time I/O performance of disk/arrays but does not indicate file or process

• Managing products on a an ecommerce site [closed]

- by John
I've had a site that sells widgets for many years. I do not inventory my widgets, but the cost of adding them to the site and makings sure the site is current is becoming cost prohibitive. Here are the facts: I sell a single class of widget. I have about 50,000 widgets on my site. I have about 100 vendors that create and dropship the products when they get an order from me via email. Each vendor carries from 50 to 5000 types of widgets. Vendors all have websites with images and descriptions of their products. Each widget is produced in limited supply and usually sell out in 1-5 years. Prices of the widget often go up, sometimes more than 50% before they sell out. My vendors aren't very tech sophisticated. They have websites with their products, but most can't supply an api or database dump. Their websites usually display retail prices to the public, but I login or refer to a price list (usually excel) for wholesale prices. As it stands now, I hire local people to add and describe each widget to our website. It usually takes a person 4 minutes to add a widget to the site. This doesn't include moving to a new vendor. I feel like the upload/edit process is as good as it can get via a form/website. The problem is that it is getting very expensive to upload and keep the widget inventory current. I often get orders for something after it's sold out from the vendor or the price is wrong. This seems like it would be a problem in many industries. Can anyone suggest the cheapest way to upload inventory and ensure prices are current from my vendors? I'm assuming it will involve outsourcing, but I would like ideas on how to setup the compensation model.

• IE won't load directly-linked PNGs

- by Johannes Rössel
I remember having this issue in the past with previous versions as well but recently it started here again. Whenever I click a link that links directly to a PNG image I get a download dialog; the browser won't display it on its own. Inline PNGs are fine, though. Any ideas what causes this? It did work in the past. Preemptive warning: I'm not looking for advice to change my browser; I'm looking for a solution to a specific problem with one piece of software. Just ignore the fact that it may have religious importance.
