  • do you call them functions, procedures or methods?

    - by lowlyintern
consider a standard c# 'function' public void foo() { //some code } In c or c++ this is called a 'function' - even if taking no parameters and returning no value. In another language maybe it would be a 'procedure'. In object orientation speak it would be called a 'method' if a class member. What would be the correct term to use in c#?

  • C++ header files and variable scope

    - by MrDatabase
I want to organize my c++ variables and functions in the following way: function prototypes in a header file "stuff.h", function implementation in "stuff.cpp", then say #include "stuff.h" in main.cpp (so I can call functions implemented in stuff.cpp). So far so good. Now I want to declare some variables in stuff.cpp that have global scope (so I can modify the variables in functions implemented in stuff.cpp and main.cpp). This doesn't seem to work. How can I do this?

  • Hardest concept to grasp as a beginner

    - by noizetoys
When you were starting to program, what was the hardest concept for you to grasp? Was it recursion, pointers, linked lists, assignments, memory management? I was wondering what gave you headaches and how you overcame this issue and learned to love the bomb, I mean understand it. EDIT: As a followup, what helped you grok your hard-to-grasp concept?

  • Is there a library / api for reading the contents of a .hlp help file?

    - by boccato
I have a help file for my program and was asked to add a description of the menus in a toolbar as the user browses them. So I thought I could just use the beginning of the menu's description of the help but just cant find how to access the contents of it. I saw WinHelp has a macro language, so I figured maybe through this, but I couldnt find any references on this around. Anybody now some pointers or examples of hot to do this?

  • JQuery ready event and its shortcut

    - by Sarfraz
Hello, In most of the videos, I see expert JQuery developers writing complete code for the ready event eg: $(document).ready(function(){ //..... }); rather than its shortcut: $(function(){ //..... }); Is there any particular down side to using shortcut method?

  • JQuery within a partial view not being called

    - by XN16
I have a view that has some jQuery to load a partial view (via a button click) into a div in the view. This works without a problem. However within the partial view I have a very similar bit of jQuery that will load another partial view into a div in the first partial view, but this isn't working, it almost seems like the jQuery in the first partial view isn't being loaded. I have tried searching for solutions, but I haven't managed to find an answer. I have also re-created the jQuery function in a @Ajax.ActionLink which works fine, however I am trying to avoid the Microsoft helpers as I am trying to learn jQuery. Here is the first partial view which contains the jQuery that doesn't seem to work, it also contains the @Ajax.ActionLink that does work: @model MyProject.ViewModels.AddressIndexViewModel <script> $(".viewContacts").click(function () { $.ajax({ url: '@Url.Action("CustomerAddressContacts", "Customer")', type: 'POST', data: { addressID: $(this).attr('data-addressid') }, cache: false, success: function (result) { $("#customerAddressContactsPartial-" + $(this).attr('data-addressid')) .html(result); }, error: function () { alert("error"); } }); return false; }); </script> <table class="customers" style="width: 100%"> <tr> <th style="width: 25%"> Name </th> <th style="width: 25%"> Actions </th> </tr> </table> @foreach (Address item in Model.Addresses) { <table style="width: 100%; border-top: none"> <tr id="[email protected]"> <td style="width: 25%; border-top: none"> @Html.DisplayFor(modelItem => item.Name) </td> <td style="width: 25%; border-top: none"> <a href="#" class="viewContacts standardbutton" data-addressid="@item.AddressID">ContactsJQ</a> @Ajax.ActionLink("Contacts", "CustomerAddressContacts", "Customer", new { addressID = item.AddressID }, new AjaxOptions { UpdateTargetId = "customerAddressContactsPartial-" + @item.AddressID, HttpMethod = "POST" }, new { @class = "standardbutton"}) </td> </tr> </table> <div id="[email protected]"></div> } If someone could explain what I am doing wrong here and how to fix it then I would be very grateful. Thanks very much.

  • effective functonal sort

    - by sreservoir
I'm programming a function for a ti-nspire, so I can't use the builtins from inside a function. what is the most generally efficient algorithm for sorting a list of numbers without modifying the list itself? (recursion and list-splitting are fair game, as is general use of math.)

  • Difference between macros and functions in C in relation to instruction memory and speed

    - by DAHANS
To my understanding the difference between a macro and a function is, that a macro-call will be replaced by the instruction in the definition, and a function does the whole push, branch and pop -thing. Is this right, or have I understand something wrong? Additionally, if this is right, it would mean, that macros would take more space, but would be faster (because of the lack of the push, branch and pop instructions.), wouldn't it?

  • How early can I call kalloc in an arm linux kernel?

    - by Isaac Sutherland
I would like to dynamically allocate memory from the machine_init function in my arm linux kernel. Calling kalloc can result in a complete failure of the system to boot. My debugging tools are very limited so I can't give much more information regarding the failure. Simply put, is it legal to call kalloc from a machine_init function in arm linux, and, if not, is there an alternative?

  • Undo implementation - DOM manipulations

    - by sonofdelphi
Is there a library that can be used for implementing undo/redo functionality for DOM element manipulations in JavaScript? I'm writing an app that moves around DOM elements, enables editing and deletion of those elements. There are event-handlers and other objects associated with each element operated upon. Not sure whether I need to roll my own implementation of the Command pattern for this. Surely, there must be something available? If not, suggestions and pointers would be a great help.

  • Android - what's the difference between the various methods to get a Context?

    - by Alnitak
In various bits of Android code I've seen: public class MyActivity extends Activity { public void method() { mContext = this; // since Activity extends Context mContext = getApplicationContext(); mContext = getBaseContext(); } } However I can't find any decent explanation of which is preferable, and under what circumstances which should be used. Pointers to documentation on this, and guidance about what might break if the wrong one is chosen, would be much appreciated.

  • [C] Programming problem: Storing values of an array in one variable

    - by OldMacDonald
    Hello, I am trying to use md5 code to calculate checksums of file. Now the given function prints out the (previously calculated) checksum on screen, but I want to store it in a variable, to be able to compare it later on. I guess the main problem is that I want to store the content of an array in one variable. How can I manage that? Probably this is a very stupid question, but maybe somone can help. Below is the function to print out the value. I want to modify it to store the result in one variable. static void MDPrint (mdContext) MD5_CTX *mdContext; { int i; for (i = 0; i < 16; i++) { printf ("%02x", mdContext->digest[i]); } // end of for } // end of function For reasons of completeness the used struct: /* typedef a 32 bit type */ typedef unsigned long int UINT4; /* Data structure for MD5 (Message Digest) computation */ typedef struct { UINT4 i[2]; /* number of _bits_ handled mod 2^64 */ UINT4 buf[4]; /* scratch buffer */ unsigned char in[64]; /* input buffer */ unsigned char digest[16]; /* actual digest after MD5Final call */ } MD5_CTX; and the used function to calculate the checksum: static int MDFile (filename) char *filename; { FILE *inFile = fopen (filename, "rb"); MD5_CTX mdContext; int bytes; unsigned char data[1024]; if (inFile == NULL) { printf ("%s can't be opened.\n", filename); return -1; } // end of if MD5Init (&mdContext); while ((bytes = fread (data, 1, 1024, inFile)) != 0) MD5Update (&mdContext, data, bytes); MD5Final (&mdContext); MDPrint (&mdContext); printf (" %s\n", filename); fclose (inFile); return 0; }
