  • Most valuable course in the CS degree.

    - by danielrutledge
I was a math major and I took OOP and Algorithms & Data Structures from the CS department while in school, but didn't continue to any upper-division courses. What were the most valuable courses to your programming career (Operating systems, Compiler Design, Computer architecture, etc) in your CS degree? Alternatively, if you're like me and don't have one, are there any courses you wish you had taken? What would be the best way to fill in the gaps in my knowledge outside of school?

    - by Sam
When I try to select the following "File Open Web Site" or use the shortcut key "Shift + Alt + O" (which does the same), Visual Studio 2008 hangs with the loading mouse icon for about 8-10 seconds then the file. But if I do "File Open Project/Solution.." or "File Open File..." the explorer window comes up in under a second, instantly most times. • What facets have I missed for creating a 3 person guerilla dev team?

This does assume your team members provide their own machines, and one person has a spare old computer to be the Source Repository and Web Server. All for under $200 bucks. Usability Silverback Licenses = 3 x $49.95 "Spontaneous, unobtrusive usability testing software for designers and developers." Source Control Server and Clients (multiple options) Subversion = Free Subversion is an open source version control system. Versions (Currently in Beta) = Free Versions provides a pleasant work with Subversion on your Mac. Diffly = Free "Diffly is a tool for exploring Subversion working copies. It shows all files with changes and, clicking on a file, shows a highlighted view of the changes for that file. Bug/Feature/Defect Tracking (multiple options) Bugzilla = Free Bugzilla is a "Defect Tracking System" or "Bug-Tracking System". Defect Tracking Systems allow individual or groups of developers to keep track of outstanding bugs in their product effectively. Most commercial defect-tracking software vendors charge enormous licensing fees. Trac = Free Trac is an enhanced wiki and issue tracking system for software development projects. - by domi
I've got a really nasty problem... I wrote a red5 app and so on and it is running perfectly on my local computer. Now the problem occurs = How can I make this program work on a remote server? Local : OSX 10.5 - red5 0.63 Server: CentOS 5 - red5 0.90 Maybe its because of the version difference... but I can't test red5 0.90 locally becaus it won't start up -.-' and I can't install the 0.63 on the server because of missing dependencies (and broken links to them...)

  • Are .dll files loaded once for every program or once for all programs?

    - by Nilbert
I have a simple small question which someone who knows will be able to answer easily, I searched google but couldn't find the answer. There are many programs running at once on a computer, and my question is: when a program loads a DLL, does it actually load the DLL file or does it find the memory in which the DLL is already loaded? For example, is ws2_32.dll (winsock 2) loaded for every program that uses winsock, or is it loaded once and all programs that use it use the same memory addresses to call the functions?

  • General confusion with assembler

    - by gnrlcf
So I took a look at the x86 assembly language; All the commands are pretty clear but: I don't see anything that can actually trigger something in the computer like: Access RAM and not only CPU registers, read from the HDD, etc. How do you go beyond computations in the CPU with assembler?

  • gcc segmentation fault compiling 20k file

    - by aaa
hi. I have fairly large file, 20k lines long (auto generated). It has been compiling okay, but after adding new if/endif preprocessor block, I started getting gcc internal errors: segmentation fault. the code inside new preprocessor block is not being compiled, so I am not sure where the error is coming from. my only guess is memory, but as far as I can tell it does not exhaust computer memory. Any thoughts?

  • What is natural deduction used for outside of academia?

    - by Danny King
Hello, I am studying natural deduction as a part of my Formal Specification & Verification Computer Science course at University/College. I find it interesting, however I learn much better when I can find a practical use for things. Could anyone explain to me if and how natural deduction is used other than for formally verifying bits of code? Thanks!

  • Highlight overlapping text in JQuery

    - by Jasie
I've got this plain HTML: "Many things are in my room: a bed, a desk, and a computer." And these phrases: "things are" "are in my room" "room: a bed" In JQuery, is there some way to loop through the phrase list, and highlight the phrases as they appear in the text, and have the overlap delineated by color, or border, etc? I know there are simple highlighters but that won't do the trick. Maybe something with overlaying opacities? Thanks!

  • launch an application from HTML with arguments

    - by Jugglingnutcase
Is there a way to allow an HTML file to open an application on the local computer and send that application arguments? We have an application that allows a user to set a link to an external application. We also provide a summary page in HTML (they usually interact with the application from outside the browser) with the link in HTML as well. We can get applications to launch if the program exists, but cant seem to send arguments through the HTML link. Is this even possible?

    - by holocronweaver
How can I launch a new Git Bash window with a specified working directory using a script (either bash or Windows batch)? My goal is to launch multiple Git Bash windows from a single script, each Bash terminal set to a different working directory. This way I can quickly get to work after booting computer instead of having to open Git Bash windows and navigating each one to the correct working directory.

  • BigInteger.pow(BigInteger) ?

    - by PeterW
I'm playing with numbers in Java, and want to see how big a number I can make. It is my understanding that BigInteger can hold a number of infinite size, so long as my computer has enough Memory to hold such a number, correct? My problem is that BigInteger.pow accepts only an int, not another BigInteger, which means I can only use a number up to 2,147,483,647 as the exponent. Is it possible to use the BigInteger class as such? BigInteger.pow(BigInteger) Thanks.

  • Inno Setup install for another user

    - by Steve
When a user has restricted rights on his/her computer and runs my Inno Setup installer, Windows pop-up an administrator login prompt. The problem is that when the administrator types in his/her username and password and logs-in, Inno Setup thinks that he or she is the logged in user and installs my app for that user instead of the original one. (I'm installing files in the {userappdata} dir) Is there a way to overcome this limitation and install for the original restricted user?

  • MS Runtime required for app to run, how can I include with setup?

    - by JPJedi
My application requires access to be installed on the computer or at least the MS Access runtime. Is their a way to include that with the application to check for that component/resource or install it if it isn't? Or would it just be easier to include a link to tell the user where to get the runtime if the error happens? I am using Visual Studio 2008 and the windows form app is written in VB.net. I am currently using click once for the deployment. Thanks
