• reconstructing a tree from its preorder and postorder lists.

  Consider the situation where you have two lists of nodes of which all you know is that one is a representation of a preorder traversal of some tree and the other a representation of a postorder traversal of the same tree. I believe it is possible to reconstruct the tree exactly from these two lists, and I think I have an algorithm to do it, but have not proven it. As this will be a part of a masters project I need to be absolutely certain that it is possible and correct (Mathematically proven). However it will not be the focus of the project, so I was wondering if there is a source out there (i.e. paper or book) I could quote for the proof. (Maybe in TAOCP? anybody know the section possibly?) In short, I need a proven algorithm in a quotable resource that reconstructs a tree from its pre and post order traversals. Note: The tree in question will probably not be binary, or balanced, or anything that would make it too easy. Note2: Using only the preorder or the postorder list would be even better, but I do not think it is possible. Note3: A node can have any amount of children. Note4: I only care about the order of siblings. Left or right does not matter when there is only one child.

• Ruby, Rails & MySQL parity between Mac Client (10.6) & XServe (10.5)

  We're setting up a RoR setup with Development on Mac OS X Client (10.6.3) and then using a Mac OS X Server (10.5.8) for testing and eventually deployment. I'd like to get as many systems in sync on these machines as possible. Wondering if there are any pitfalls. I seem to understand what's necessary under Client but Server has some hardwired stuff that I want to make sure doesn't break...or is updated correctly. Currently installed on both machines we have: OS X Client (10.6.3): Ruby 1.8.7 Rails 2.3.5 MySQL (not installed yet) OS X Server (10.5.8): Ruby 1.8.6 Rails 2.3.5 MySQL Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.82 Any suggestions...Ideally from someone who's done this on Leopard Server as well but I'll listen to general tips & proceedures

• General N-Tier Architecture Question

  In an N-Tier app you're supposed to have a business logic layer and a data access layer. Is it bad to simply have two assemblies: BusinessLogicLayer.dll and DataAccessLayer.dll to handle all this logic? How do you actually represent these layers. It seems silly, the way I've seen it, to have a BusinessLogic class library containing classes like: CustomerBusinessLogic.cs, OrderBusinessLogic.cs, etc. each calling their appropriately named cousin in the DataAccessLayer class library, i.e. CustomerDataAccess.cs, OrderDataAccess.cs. I want to create a web app using MVP and it doesn't seem so cut and dry as this. There are lots of opinions about where the business logic is supposed to be put in MVP and I'm not sure I've found a really great answer yet. I want this project to be easily testable, and I am trying to adhere to TDD methodologies as best I can. I intend to use MSTest and Rhino Mocks for testing. I was thinking of something like the following for my architecture: I'd use LINQ-To-SQL to talk to the database. WCF services to define data contract interfaces for the business logic layer. Then use MVP with ASP.NET Forms for the UI/BLL. Now, this isn't the start of this project, most of the LINQ stuff is already done, so its stuck. The WCF service would replace the existing DataAccessLayer assembly and the UI/BLL would replace the BusinessLogicLayer assembly etc. This sort of makes sense in my head, but its getting really late. Anyone that's traveled down this path have any guidance? Good links? Warnings? Thanks!

  I just came across some articles on how to setup your own cloud using Cloudfoundry and Ubuntu, this got me thinking, choosing our infrastructure, if we want to use our own servers what's the advantage of cloud on virtual servers vs just using virtual servers, VPN? If we now develop for the cloud later if we need help we can quickly move on to a cloud provider, but other than that what's the advantage and disadvantage of private cloud in these areas? speed of development, testing, deployment server management security having an extra layer (cloud) will that have a hit on server performance, how big? any other advantage/disadvantage?

I followed this instructions (added 'django.contrib.markup' to INSTALLED_APPS, include {% load markup %} in the template and use |markdown filter after installing python-markdown) but I get the following error: Error in {% markdown %} filter: The Python markdown library isn't installed. • Missing WM_PAINT when hosting a WPF control inside a winforms application.

  Hi All, Consider the following scenario: 1) Create a winforms application with an empty form. 2) Create a WPF usercontrol in the same project which is just the default control with background changed to blue. <UserControl x:Class="WindowsFormsApplication2.UserControl1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Height="300" Width="300" Background="Blue"> <Grid> </Grid> </UserControl> 3) Build the project 4) Add the control to your form (an ElementHost is added and the control is added inside it). 5) Run the application (everything looks nice) 6) Start Spy++, click find window (Control+F) and move the cursor onto the WPF control (the blue square) Something strange happens, the control gets a WM_ERASEBKGND message but no WM_PAINT message so now it is white. You can resize the form, hide the form behind other windows and the WPF control will not get rendered. • Turning off hibernate logging console output

  I'm using hibernate 3 and want to stop it from dumping all the startup messages to the console. I tried commenting out the stdout lines in log4j.properties but no luck. I've pasted my log file below.   How could I inject a --stringparam (xsltproc) into the DOCTYPE of a XSL stylesheet? The --stringparam is specified from the command line. I have several books in docbook5 format I want to process with the same customization layer, each book having an unique identifier, here "demo", so I'm running something like xsltproc --stringparam course.name demo ... for each book. • Amazon RDS Pros/Cons of Multiple DBs per instance

  I run two completely independent websites. I am moving their MySQL databases to Amazon RDS. I'm not going to do Multi A/Z deployment - let's remove that variable from this question. I'm not sure whether to create a single RDS instance with two databases, or two Amazon RDS instances with a single database. Ignore cost for the sake of this question. I will not hit the 1 TB data limit so let's ignore that. However, it is extremely important that crashing one of the websites doesn't impact the other. Based on this document - http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/Concepts.DBInstance.html I'm assuming that if I write terrible code that crashes one of the databases in a given RDS instance, it could possibly take down the entire RDS instance (and thus inadvertantly affect the other database). • SCVMM upgrade scenario

  I've read some information on TechNet about upgrading SCVMM 2008 - 2012 but can't quite figure out the best way to approach this. The current setup is that we've got SCVMM 2008 R2 installed but against best practice it was actually installed on the Hyper-V host machine since its a small scale deployment its just a single server setup with SCVMM existing on the same host rather than be in a VM. So from what I've read an in-place should be possible which will incur a restart but also don't have the luxury of another server to shift the VMs onto whilst doing this or want to risk anything happening to the Hyper-V role. Ideally I would probably prefer just to get SCVMM 2012 into a VM of its own and remove the 2008 version from the host machine. Anyone done an upgrade on this or have any recommendations about how to approach this?

• Abusing the word "library"

  I see a lot of questions, both here on SO and elsewhere, about "maintaining common libraries in a VCS". That is, projects foo and bar both depend on libbaz, and the questioner is wondering how they should import the source for libbaz into the VCS for each project. My question is: WTF? If libbaz is a library, then foo doesn't need its source code at all. There are some libraries that are reasonably designed to be used in this manner (eg gnulib), but for the most part foo and bar ought to just link against the library. I guess my thinking is: if you cut-and-paste source for a library into your own source tree, then you obviously don't care about future updates to the library. If you care about updates, then just link against the library and trust the library maintainers to maintain a stable API. If you don't trust the API to remain stable, then you can't blindly update your own copy of the source anyway, so what is gained? To summarize the question: why would anyone want to maintain a copy of a library in the source code for a project rather than just linking against that library and requiring it as a dependency? If the only answer is "don't want the dependency", then why not just distribute a copy of the library along with your app, but keep them totally separate?

• [ASP.NET] Difficulties using custom control - RichTextEditor

  I am working on a school project that uses ASP.NET. I found this TextEditor control ( http://blogs.msdn.com/kirti/archive/2007/11/10/rich-text-editor-is-here.aspx ) that I am trying to include but it isn't working. The error I am getting is: Error Rendering Control - TextEditor. An unhandled exception has occurred. Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index. I see this error when I go Design part of the editor. I just don't understand this error at all. Also I am a lil bit confused as there is no parameter called index. :( What I have done is reference the binary in my project and then on the page I am trying to use it have registered its namespace and assembly with this line: <%@ Register Assembly="RichTextEditor" Namespace="AjaxControls" TagPrefix="rtt" %> I then go ahead and try to add the control to the page with this line of code: <rtt:richtexteditor ID="TextEditor" Theme="Blue" runat="server" /> Any help would be much appreciated. I haven't done anything like add a custom control before.

• What is the best solution for a blog with e-commerce?

  Hi! While there are loads of Joomla vs Wordpress posts out there, none address which is best suited to a blog with an attached online store. I anticipate having about 40 or so articles and want the full set of blogging features- tags, comments, talkback, sharing options, SEO functionality, support for ads etc. The online store will come later. I'll be the only contributor but I want to keep extensibility in mind with respect to multiple contributors, possible social network integration, and expanded categories of content down the line. I'm a developer with a lot of experience with C# and SQL Server but very little with web development, mostly in ASP.NET and basic HTML/CSS. I'm keen on learning as much as I can but don't want to reinvent the wheel or put the project on hold as I get up the learning curve. I have concerns with both Joomla and Wordpress. Joomla seems like the most extensible option but but all of the articles on blogging with Joomla I've read complain of shortcomings I'd rather not trade off. Wordpress on the other hand seems ideal for the blog aspect of the project, but a lot of people on this site recommend avoiding it for much more than that, including e-commerce. I really don't want to hack together a hybrid. Advice is much appreciated, thanks!

Note: It seems to me that the files are processed separately and because the file Solvers.xaml contains the error the MainWindow.xaml file also contains the very same error. Note 2: XAML files use AvalonDock library Is there a way how to say that Solvers.xaml is only an extension of another file? Thank you for any help!

• WF performance with new 20,000 persisted workflow instances each month

  Windows Workflow Foundation has a problem that is slow when doing WF instances persistace. I'm planning to do a project whose bussiness layer will be based on WF exposed WCF services. The project will have 20,000 new workflow instances created each month, each instance could take up to 2 months to finish. What I was lead to belive that given WF slownes when doing peristance my given problem would be unattainable given performance reasons. I have the following questions: Is this true? Will my performance be crap with that load(given WF persitance speed limitations) How can I solve the problem? We currently have two possible solutions: 1. Each new buisiness process request(e.g. Give me a new drivers license) will be a new WF instance, and the number of persistance operations will be limited by forwarding all status request operations to saved state values in a separate database. 2. Have only a small amount of Workflow Instances up at any give time, without any persistance ofso ever(only in case of system crashes etc.), by breaking each workflow stap in to a separate worklof and that workflow handling each business process request instance in the system that is at that current step(e.g. I'm submitting my driver license reques form, which is step one... we have 100 cases of that, and my step one workflow will handle every case simultaneusly). • How can I create my own form designer?

  I'm starting my first C# project, and I want to make a "form designer" (like the one in VS). The idea is, there will be a visual form designer with a limited toolbox, which will generate Python code (later more) to create the same form. Problem is, I have no idea how to even get started. First of all, I have the form designer in VS: how do I make a "form-within-a-form?" Next... I have no idea how complicated this is going to be. I suppose I could just make little boxes appear beside each control created on the form when it is clicked, for resizing, and make a textbox appear on it when double clicked or something, to change the text in it... Things like this. So another thing I would like to know is this: I do have programming experience in C and C++, I've done PHP for a number of years and am starting with Python as of recently. I've generated forms dynamically in VB6. Given this experience, am I in way over my head with this project?

• Virtualbox PXE Boot Failing with a Windows Server 2008 R2 Server

  Some fast help on this would be good, I have been on this problem for 14 hours. In a Virtualbox test environment I have 2 virtual machines networked together using a internal network (no traffic runs though the host, it is all at a software level). One is a fresh client with 512mb of ram and a dual core set-up, the other is the server with 1.5GB of ram and running server 2008 r2. The server is configured as a dns server, dchp server, domain controller and also serves PXE booting though WDS (Windows Deployment Services). Both machines can see each other and I am able to start a network boot. The issue comes at the second to last stage of the pre windows PE install. On TFTP download of boot.sdi it starts it but stops during the boot process.

Here's a bit about the landscape: Current state is 50-100 users/mailboxes with the majority using Outlook 2007 OWA enabled desktop users are NOT running in Cached Exchange Mode laptops users ARE running in Cached Exchange Mode a single Exchange server with modest or reasonable specs for the day (3gz, multi-core, 4gb, Win 2003 32-bit) Questions Do you have any suggestions for the admin team regarding the upgrade path/steps from Exchange 2003 to 2010? Considering the requirement of a 64 bit OS, consider a new separate machine as ready to go with Win 2008. Have I missed any details? Where might virtualization help in this project? Any lessons learned in previous upgrades (2007 or 2010) would be appreciated!

• What vertex shader code should be used for a pixel shader used for simple 2D SpriteBatch drawing in XNA?

  Preface First of all, why is a vertex shader required for a SilverlightEffect (.slfx file) in Silverlight 5? I'm trying to port a simple 2D XNA game to Silverlight 5 RC, and I would like to use a basic pixel shader. This shader works great in XNA for Windows and Xbox, but I can't get it to compile with Silverlight as a SilverlightEffect. The MS blog for the Silverlight Toolkit says that "there is no difference between .slfx and .fx", but apparently this isn't quite true -- or at least SpriteBatch is working some magic for us in "regular XNA", and it isn't in "Silverlight XNA". If I try to directly copy my pixel shader file into a Silverlight project (and change it to the supported "Effect - Silverlight" importer/processor), when I try to compile I see the following error message: Invalid effect file. Unable to find vertex shader in pass "P0" Indeed, there isn't a vertex shader in my pixel shader file. I haven't needed one with my other 2D XNA apps since I'm just doing basic SpriteBatch drawing. I tried adding a vertex shader to my shader file, using Remi Gillig's comment on this Shawn Hargreaves blog post for guidance, but it doesn't quite work. The shader file successfully compiles, and I see some semblance of my game on screen, but it's tiny, twisted, repeated, and all jumbled up. So clearly something's not quite right. The Real Question So that brings me to my real question: Since a vertex shader is required, is there a basic vertex shader function that works for simple 2D SpriteBatch drawing? And if the vertex shader requires world/view/project matricies as parameters, what values am I supposed to use for a 2D game? Can any shader pros help? Thanks!

• Export Multiple Crystal Reports ASP.NET

  Hey all, I want to export 2 different reports when I click an Export button. The problem is the routine only fires once and I only get one report to print out. Am I doing something wrong? I think it has something to do with the HTTPResponse, but I'm not sure.   How do I go about the [HandleError] filter in asp.net MVC Preview 5? I set the customErrors in my web.config file <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="Error.aspx"> <error statusCode="403" redirect="NoAccess.htm"/> <error statusCode="404" redirect="FileNotFound.htm"/> </customErrors> and put [HandleError] above my Controller Class like this: [HandleError] public class DSWebsiteController: Controller{ [snip] public ActionResult CrashTest() { throw new Exception("Oh Noes!"); } } Then I let my controllers inherit from this class and call CrashTest() on them. Visual studio halts at the error and after pressing f5 to continue, I get rerouted to Error.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/sxi.mvc/CrashTest (where sxi is the name of the used controller. Off course the path cannot be found and I get "Server Error in '/' Application." 404. This site was ported from preview 3 to 5. Everything runs (wasn't that much work to port) except the error handling. When I create a complete new project the error handling seems to work. Ideas? --Note-- Since this question has over 3K views now, I thought it would be beneficial to put in what I'm currently (asp.net mvc 1.0) using. In the mvc contrib project there is a brilliant attribute called "RescueAttribute" You should probably check it out too ;)
