• Why is TransactionScope using a distributed transaction when I am only using LinqToSql and Ado.Net

  We are having problems on one machine, with the error message: "MSDTC on server XXX is unavailable." The code is using a TransactionScope to wrap some LingToSql database code; there is also some raw Ado.net inside of the transaction. As only a single sql database (2005) is being accessed, why is a distributed transaction being used at all? (I don’t wish to know how to enable MSDTC, as the code needs to work on the server with their current setup)

  Summary I have looked over the code the SpiderMonkey 'shell' application uses to create the ctypes JavaScript object, but I'm a less-than novice C programmer. Due to the varying levels of insanity emitted by modern build systems, I can't seem to track down the code or command that actually links a program with the desired functionality. method.madness This js-ctypes implementation by The Mozilla Devs is an awesome addition. Since its conception, scripting has been primarily used to exert control over more rigorous and robust applications. The advent of js-ctypes to the SpiderMonkey project, enables JavaScript to stand up and be counted as a full fledged object oriented rapid application development language flying high above 'the bar' set by various venerable application development languages such as Microsoft's VB6. Shall we begin? I built SpiderMonkey with this config: ./configure --enable-ctypes --with-system-nspr followed by successful execution of: make && make install The js shell works fine and a global ctypes javascript object was verified operational in that shell. As I stated earlier, I am less than a novice with the C code, and I really have no idea what to do here. Please give or give direction to a generic example of making the js-ctypes object functional in an embedding.

• Java HTTP Request Occasionally Hangs

  Hello Everyone, For the majority of the time, my HTTP Requests work with no problem. However, occasionally they will hang. The code that I am using is set up so that if the request succeeds (with a response code of 200 or 201), then call screen.requestSucceeded(). If the request fails, then call screen.requestFailed(). When the request hangs, however, it does so before one of the above methods are called. Is there something wrong with my code? Should I be using some sort of best practice to prevent any hanging? This question contains sample code that demonstrates the C++ approach. Of course it would be possible to build a managed C++ assembly to perform this function for C# and VB.NET code, but I'm wondering: is there a way to translate COM error codes using the .NET system libraries?

• Simple time profiling - strange times

  I'm trying to profile my code to check how long it takes to execute some parts of my code. I've wrapped my most time-consuming part of the code in something like that: DateTime start = DateTime.Now; ... ... // Here comes the time-consuming part ... Console.WriteLine((DateTime.Now - start).Miliseconds); The program is executing this part of code for couple of seconds (about 20 s) but in console I get the result of something about 800 miliseconds. Why is that so? What am I doing wrong?

• Is there a way to trace through only project source in Delphi?

  I'm using Delphi 2010 and I'm wondering if there's a way to trace through code which is in the project without tracing through calls to included VCLs. For example - you put in a breakpoint and then use Shift+F7 to trace through line-by-line. Now you run into a call to some lengthy procedure in a VCL - in my case it's often a Measurement Studio or other component that draws the doodads for a bunch of I/O, OPC, or other bits. At any rate, what happens is that the debugger hops out of the active source file, opens the component source, and traces through that line by line. Often this is hundreds or thousands of lines of code I don't care about - I just want to have it execute and return to the next source line in MY project. Obviously you can do this by setting breakpoints around every instance of an external call, but often there are too many to make this practical - I'd be spending an hour setting a hundred breakpoints every time I wanted to step through a section of code. Is there a setting or a tool somewhere that can do this? Allow one to trace through code within the project while silently executing code which is external to the project? • Way to get VS 2008 to stop forcing indentation on namespaces?

  I've never really been a big fan of the way most editors handle namespaces. They always force you to add an extra pointless level of indentation. For instance, I have a lot of code in a page that I would much rather prefer formatted as namespace mycode{ class myclass{ void function(){ foo(); } void foo(){ bar(); } void bar(){ //code.. } } } and not something like namespace mycode{ class myclass{ void function(){ foo(); } void foo(){ bar(); } void bar(){ //code.. } } } Honestly, I don't really even like the class thing being indented most of the time because I usually only have 1 class per file. And it doesn't look as bad here, but when you get a ton of code and lot of scopes, you can easily have indentation that forces you off the screen, and plus here I just used 2-space tabs and not 4-space as is used by us. Anyway, is there some way to get Visual Studio to stop trying to indent namespaces for me like that?

• Windows 7 Aero Theme Progress Bar Bug?

  I have ran into what I consider to be a progress bar bug on Windows 7. To demonstrate the bug I created a WinForm application with a button and a progress bar. In the button's 'on-click' handle I have the following code. private void buttonGo_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.progressBar.Minimum = 0; this.progressBar.Maximum = 100; this.buttonGo.Text = "Busy"; this.buttonGo.Update(); for (int i = 0; i <= 100; ++i) { this.progressBar.Value = i; this.Update(); System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10); } this.buttonGo.Text = "Ready"; } The expected behavior is for the progress bar to advance to 100% and then the button text to change to 'Ready'. However, when developing this code on Windows 7, I noticed that the progress bar would rise to about 75% and then the button text would change to 'Ready'. Assuming the code is synchronous, this should not happen! On further testing I found that the exact same code running on Windows Server 2003 produced the expected results. Furthermore, choosing a non aero theme on Windows 7 produces the expected results. In my mind, this seems like a bug. Often it is very hard to make a progress bar accurate when the long operation involves complex code but in my particular case it was very straight forward and so I was little disappointed when I found the progress control did not accurately represent the progress. Has anybody else noticed this behavior? Has anybody found a workaround?

• Ruby ROXML - how to get an array to render its xml?

  I'm trying to create a Messages object that inherits Array. The messages will gather a group of Message objects. I'm trying to create an xml output with ROXML that looks like this: <messages> <message> <type></type> <code></code> <body></body> </message> ... </messages> However, I can't figure out how to get the message objects in the Messages object to display in the xml.   Are there any books or articles that show you how to use NUnit to test entire features of a program? Is there a name for this type of testing? This is different from the typical use of NUnit for unit testing where you test individual classes. This is similar to acceptance testing except that it is written by the developer to discern that the program does what they interpreted as being what the customer wants the program to do. I don't need it to be readable by non-programmers or to produce a readable specification for non-programmers. The problem I am having is keeping this feature testing code maintainable. I need help in organizing my feature testing code. I also need help organizing the program code to be drivable in this way. I am having a hard time being able to issue commands to the program while still having good code design.

• How do I name an array key with a key inside the array

  I have some data, yes, data. This data came from a MySQL query and it will always contain 4 items, always. I want to cache that data in an array table for use later within a web page but I want to keep the keys from the query and separate out each grouping within a multidimensional array. However to save time iterating through the array each time I want to find a given group of data, I want to call the keys of the first array the same as the ID key which is always the first key within each four items. At the minute I'm using this code: function mysql_fetch_full_result_array($result) { $table_result=array(); $r=0; while($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)){ $arr_row=array(); $c=0; while ($c < mysql_num_fields($result)) { $col = mysql_fetch_field($result, $c); $arr_row[$col -> name] = $row[$col -> name]; $c++; } $table_result[$r] = $arr_row; $r++; } return $table_result; } I'm currently testing this using 3 unique users, so I'm getting three rows back from the query and the data from this function ends up in the format: [0]=> . . I know I need another loop but I'm struggling to work out how to write it.

• How to initiate chatting between two clients and two clients only, using applets and servlets?

  Hello everyone, I first need to apologize for my earlier questions. (You can check my profile for them)They seemed to ask more questions than give answers. Hence, I am laying down the actual question that started all them absurd questions. I am trying to design a chat applet. Till now, I have coded the applet, servlet and communication between the applet and the servlet. The code in the servlet side is such that I was able to establish chatting between clients using the applets, but the code was more like a broadcast all feature, i.e. all clients would be chatting with each other. That was my first objective when I started designing the chat applet. The second step is chatting between only two specific users, much like any other chat application we have. So this was my idea for it: I create an instance of the servlet that has the 'broadcast-all' code. I then pass the address of this instance to the respective clients. 2 client applets use the address to then chat. Technically the code is 'broadcast-all', but since only 2 clients are connected to it, it gives the chatting between two clients feature. Thus, groups of 2 clients have different instances of the same servlet, and each instance handles chatting between two clients at a max. However, as predicted, the idea didn't materialize! I tried to create an instance of the servlet but the only solution for that was using sessions on the servlet side, and I don't know how to use this session for later communications. I then tried to modify my broadcast-all code. In that code, I was using classes that implemented Observer and Observable interfaces. So the next idea that I got was: Create a new object of the Observable class(say class_1). This object be common to 2 clients. 2 clients that wish to chat will use same object of the class_1. 2 other clients will use a different object of class_1. But the problem here lies with the class that implements the Observer interface(say class_2). Since this has observers monitoring the same type of class, namely class_1, how do I establish an observer monitoring one object of class_1 and another observer monitoring another object of the same class class_1 (Because notifyObservers() would notify all the observers and I can't assign a particular observer to a particular object)? I first decided to ask individual problems, like how to create instances of servlets, using objects of observable and observer and so on in stackoverflow... but I got confused even more. Can anyone give me an idea how to establish chatting between two clients only?(I am using Http and not sockets or RMI). Regards, Mithun. P.S.   Hi, I am working on an ASP.NET website which uses forms authentication with a custom authentication mechanism (which sets e.Authenticated programmatically on protected void Login_Authenticate(object sender, AuthenticateEventArgs e)). I have an ASP.NET sitemap. Some elements must be displayed only to logged in users. Others must be displayed only to one, unique user (ie. administrator, identified by a user name which will never change). What I want to avoid: Set a custom role provider: too much code to write for a such basic thing, Transform the existing code, for example by removing sitemap and replacing it by a code-behind solution. What I want to do: A pure code-behind solution which will let me assign roles on authenticate event. Is it possible? How? If not, is there an easy-to-do workaround?

  I have built a class in Mootools and extended it twice, such that there is a grandparent, parent, and child relationship: var SomeClass1 = new Class({ initialize: function() { // Code }, doSomething: function() { // Code } }); var SomeClass2 = new Class({ Extends: SomeClass1, initialize: function() { this.parent(); }, doSomething: function() { this.parent(); // Some code I don't want to run from Class3 } }); var SomeClass3 = new Class({ Extends: SomeClass2, initialize: function() { this.parent(); }, doSomething: function() { this.grandParent(); } }); From Class3, the child, I need call the doSomething() method from Class1, the grandparent, without executing any code in Class2#doSomething(), the parent. What I need is a grandParent() method to complement the Mootools parent(), but it appears that one does not exist. What's the best way to accomplish this in either Mootools or pure JavaScript? • Why i can not acces the protected properties in my web application

  Hi i have a web application which has a Base class in which i define all the properties common to the web pages. The base class extends System.Web.UI.Page Furthermore i have a Base User control class where are defined all the properties common to the user controls. the Base User Control extends System.Web.UI.UserControl all the properties in both base classes are protected. All the web pages extends the base class . All the controls extends the base user control class. The problem is i can not access the properties defined in the base class from the user controls and I can not extend two classes in the base user controls The question is how can i access the properties defined in the Base class from within the user controls?
