    I'm developing an Apache Sling WCMS and using java tag libs to rendering some data.   • Windows could not start Apache 2 on the local computer

    After installing PHP 5.3, Windows is unable to start Apache 2.2. Apache's error log is empty, no error message on startup: C:\Programme\Apache\bin>httpd -k start C:\Programme\Apache\bin>httpd -k stop The Apache2.2 service is not started. C:\Programme\Apache\bin>httpd -k config Reconfiguring the Apache2.2 service The Apache2.2 service is successfully installed. Testing httpd.conf.... Errors reported here must be corrected before the service can be started. I have no clue where to look for the cause. php5apache2_2.dll is copied to the Apache modules folder.   • Disable default error pages/error messages in IIS

    I have this web application (ASP.Net MVC 3) that on certain conditions returns a custom JSON string with a HTTP status code for an error (403, 415, 500). It is deployed on a Win 2008 R2 server with IIS 7.5 Initially I was gettting the standard HTML pages for the error instead of the JSON data. I removed the error pages for these errors in the app settings. But now my queries which should return some JSON data return a single error line. When the server gives me 403, I have the message "You do not have permission to view this directory or page." (simple line, no HTML around it). What can I do to deactivate this and finally get what the app is returning and not what the server wants to return?

  • WebCenter Spaces 11g PS2 Template Customization

    Recently, we have been involved in a WebCenter Spaces customization project. Customer sent us a prototype website in HTML, and we had to transform Spaces to set the same look&feel as in the prototype.Protoype:First of all, we downloaded a Virtual Machine with WebCenter Spaces 11g PS2, same version as customer's. The next step was to download ExtendWebCenterSpaces application. This is a webcenter application that customizes several elements of WebCenter Spaces: templates, skins, landing page, etc. jDeveloper configuration is needed, we followed steps described in Extended Guide, this blog was helpful too. . After that, we deployed the application using WebLogic console, we created a new group space and assigned the ExtendedWebCenterSpaces template (portalCentricSiteTemplate) to it. The result was this:As you may see there is a big difference with the prototype, which meant a lot of work to do from our side.So we needed to create a new Spaces template with its skin.Using jDeveloper, we created a new template based on the default template. We removed all menus we did not need and inserted 'include'  tags for header, breadcrumb and footers. Each of these elements was defined in an isolated jspx file.In the beginning, we faced a problem: we had to add code from prototype (in plain HTML) to jspx templates (JSF language). We managed to workaround this issue using 'verbatim' tags with 'CDATA' surrounding HTML code in header, breadcrumb and footers.Once the template was modified, we added css styles to the default skin. So we had some styles from portalCentricSiteTemplate plus styles from customer's prototype.Then, we re-deployed the application, assigned this template to a new group space and checked the result. After testing, we usually found issues, so we had to do some modifications in the application, then it was necessary to re-deploy the application and restart Spaces server. Due to this fact, the testing process takes quite a bit of time.Added to the template and skin customization, we also customized the Landing Page using this application and Members task flow using another application: SpacesTaskflowCustomizationApplication. I will talk about this task flow customization in a future entry.After some issues and workarounds, eventually we managed to get this look&feel in Spaces:P.S. In this customization I was working with Francisco Vega and Jose Antonio Labrada, consultants from Oracle Malaga International Consulting Centre.

  • Is it worth learning either GWT or Vaadin?

    I consider myself a decent java/web developer. In my career I have always used servlets and ejb's with a web front end, most recently incoporating jquery and ajax. I can see the theoretical benefit of using GWT or Vaadin: it is my understanding they convert Java code to the required JavaScript/HTML. So the developer gets the benefit of cross browser compatibility and compile time error checking (of web GUI elements). My question is threefold: Are there any other benefits I am missing that would be gained using Vaadin or GWT? I am actually quite confident and productive using HTML and JavaScript - so will I actually see any benefit? Or will it just make my knowledge of these areas redundant (as they are handled by GWT/Vaadin)? Will the end result be that I can create enterprise scale data driven websites in a reasonably short time? I can however already do this, and I have not wasted any time learning GWT/Vaadin.

  • Slow Firefox Javascript Canvas Performance?

    As a followup from a previous post, I have been trying to track down some slowdown I am having when drawing a scene using Javascript and the canvas element. I decided to narrow down my focus to a REALLY barebones animation that only clears the canvas and draws a single image, once per-frame. This of course runs silky smooth in Chrome, but it still stutters in Firefox. I added a simple FPS calculator, and indeed it appears that my page is typically getting an FPS in the 50's when running Firefox. This doesn't seem right to me, I must be doing something wrong here. I do not care about security. I changed permission on /var/www/to 777 for the moment , because I want to host my simple website or webpage but only on my local server. In most cases this behavior goes with draggable windows, but sometimes it’s also useful to have closable behavior on static page content that the user can choose to hide or otherwise make invisible or fade out. Ideally though (and these posts make me realize this often a little late) I probably should set up a custom cssClass to handle the rendering – maybe a CSS class called .removebox that only changes the image from the default box image. This example also hooks up an event handler that is fired in response to the close. In the list I need to know when the remove button is clicked so I can fire of a service call to the server to actually remove the item from the database. The handler code can also return false; to indicate that the window should not be closed optionally. Returning true will close the window. You can find more information about the .closable class behavior and options here: .closable Documentation Plug-ins make Server Control JavaScript much easier I find this plug-in immensely useful especial as part of server control code, because it simplifies the code that has to be generated server side tremendously. Compared to the code I used to have in pre-jQuery versions of my JavaScript toolkit this is a walk in the park. In those days there was a bunch of JS generation which was ugly to say the least. I know a lot of folks frown on using server controls, especially the UI is client centric as the example is. However, I do feel that server controls can greatly simplify the process of getting the right behavior attached more easily and with the help of IntelliSense. Often the script markup is easier is especially if you are dealing with complex, multiple plug-in associations that often express more easily with property values on a control. Regardless of whether server controls are your thing or not this plug-in can be useful in many scenarios. Even in simple client-only scenarios using a plug-in with a few simple parameters is nicer and more consistent than creating the HTML markup over and over again.   • Nginx + Haproxy + Thin + Rails - 503 Service Unavailable -

    I don't know how troubleshoot this. I get "503 Service Unavailable" http error for all "nginx upstreams" proxy passing calls to haproxy fast_thin and slow_thin ( server 127.0.0.1:3100 and server 127.0.0.1:3200 ), which loadbalance on 6 Thin servers ( 127.0.0.1:3000 .. 3005 ). Static files like /blog are currently fine. The falldown is: nginx on port 80 - haproxy on 3100 and 3200 - thin on 3000 .. 3005 and then Rails.   • Eclipse Helios on OS X Snow Leopard crashes frequently when editing certain PHP files

    I use Eclipse Helios (Eclipse Platform: 3.6.0.I20100608-0911, Eclipse IDE for PHP Developers: 1.3.0.20100617-0520) all the time on OS X (Snow Leopard), and it seems I only run into trouble whenever I'm editing a PHP file that's part of the WordPress blogging framework. When I move my cursor to a variable or function name, that often triggers the beach ball of death. I suspect Eclipse is trying to look up that variable/function and for some reason that causes an endless loop. Sometimes it's not just variables or functions. Just today I was trying to replace all occurrences of a quoted string. Every time I clicked "Replace All", the program would freeze immediately after the string was replaced and the text cursor was moved to the replaced position. I think the moving of the text cursor is important, because I got the same result when I searched for the string (thus moving the cursor), but NOT when I searched for a nonexistent string. I tried disabling everything in my preferences related to marked occurrences, hovering, code assistance, etc. Nothing helps. I use Eclipse for all my projects, and I find that it's only WordPress projects where this happens. It's a hybrid of HTML and PHP, so Eclipse has to do both HTML and PHP validation. I wondered if the HTML validation had something to do with it, so I created a new file, copied the contents over, and messed with the doctype element. I found that if I replaced the well-formed XHTML 1.0 Strict doctype element with a generic doctype (as such: <!DOCTYPE html>), then I did not crash the program just by moving the cursor around. I set all HTML validation rules to "Ignore", but it still didn't solve my problems. For now, I'm just going to echo the doctype using PHP instead of entering it literally. That seems to prevent crashes. I notice that when I move the cursor around the document, Eclipse displays the "xpath" to my current location at the bottom of the screen. Sometimes there's a delay while it figures out my current path. Perhaps when it's validating against the Strict doctype, it has problems quickly calculating the xpath as I move the cursor around? Maybe it has a stack overflow that causes it to crash.

Why am I not getting crawled? http://cl.ly/image/2n30212q0K2W Webmaster tools show that pages are being seen as duplicate and fetch as google show me the ajax version of the source not the static escaped fragment version. What's wrong and how do I make this work? Thanks.

  • Fun With the Chrome JavaScript Console and the Pluralsight Website

Everyone already knows that Scott Allen is a “dominating force” for Pluralsight but I was curious how many courses other authors have published as well. The Pluralsight Authors page - http://pluralsight.com/training/Authors – shows all 146 authors and you can click on any author’s page to see how many (and which) courses they have authored. The problem is: I don’t want to have to click into 146 pages to get a count for each author. With this in mind, I figured I could write a little JavaScript using the Chrome JavaScript console to do some “detective work.” My first step was to figure out how the HTML was structured on this page so I could do some screen-scraping. Right-click the first author - “Inspect Element”. I can see there is a primary <div> with a class of “main” which contains all the authors. Each author is in an <h3> with an <a> tag containing their name and link to their page:     This web page already has jQuery loaded so I can use $ directly from the console. This allows me to just use jQuery to inspect items on the current page. Notice this is a multi-line command. In order to use multiple lines in the console you have to press SHIFT-ENTER to go to the next line:     Now I can see I’m extracting data just fine. At this point I want to follow each URL. Then I want to screen-scrape this next page to see how many courses each author has done. Let’s take a look at the author detail page:       I can see we have a table (with a css class of “course”) that contains rows for each course authored. This means I can get the number of courses pretty easily like this:     Now I can put this all together. Back on the authors page, I want to follow each URL, extract the returned HTML, and grab the count. In the code below, I simply use the jQuery $.get() method to get the author detail page and the “data” variable that is in the callback contains the HTML. A nice feature of jQuery is that I can simply put this HTML string inside of $() and I can use jQuery selectors directly on it in conjunction with the find() method:     Now I’m getting somewhere. I have every Pluralsight author and how many courses each one has authored. But that’s not quite what I’m after – what I want to see are the authors that have the MOST courses in the library. What I’d like to do is to put all of the data in an array and then sort that array descending by number of courses. I can add an item to the array after each author detail page is returned but the catch here is that I can’t perform the sort operation until ALL of the author detail pages have executed. The jQuery $.get() method is naturally an async method so I essentially have 146 async calls and I don’t want to perform my sort action until ALL have completed (side note: don’t run this script too many times or the Pluralsight servers might think your an evil hacker attempting a DoS attack and deny you). My C# brain wants to use a WaitHandle WaitAll() method here but this is JavaScript. I was able to do this by using the jQuery Deferred() object. I create a new deferred object for each request and push it onto a deferred array. After each request is complete, I signal completion by calling the resolve() method. Finally, I use a $.when.apply() method to execute my descending sort operation once all requests are complete. John Sonmez has 44 courses!! And Matt Milner has 29! I guess Scott Allen isn’t the only “dominating force”. I would have assumed Scott Allen was #1 but he comes in as #3 in total course count (of course Scott has 11 courses in the Top 50, and 14 in the Top 100 which is incredible!). Given that I’m in the middle of producing only my third course, I better get to work!

    My home page could be potentially linked as: http://example.com http://example.com/ http://example.com/?ref=1 http://example.com/index.html http://example.com/index.html?ref=2 (the same page is served for all those urls) I am thinking about defining a canonical url to make sure google doesn't consider those urls to be different pages: <link rel="canonical" href="/" /> (relative) <link rel="canonical" href="http://example.com/" /> (trailing slash) <link rel="canonical" href="http://example.com" /> (no trailing slash) Which one should be used? I would just slap / but messing with canonical seems like a scary business so I wanted double check first. Is it a good idea at all for defining a canonical url for a home page?

    I have checked pagination implementations on asp.net mvc specifically and i really feel that there is something less efficient in implementations. First of all all implementations use pagination values like below. public ActionResult MostPopulars(int pageIndex,int pageSize) { } The thing that i feel wrong is pageIndex and pageSize totally should be member of Pagination class otherwise this way looks so much functional way. Also it simplify unnecesary paramater pass in tiers of application. Second thing is that they use below interface. public interface IPagedList<T> : IList<T> { int PageCount { get; } int TotalItemCount { get; } int PageIndex { get; } int PageNumber { get; } int PageSize { get; } bool HasPreviousPage { get; } bool HasNextPage { get; } bool IsFirstPage { get; } bool IsLastPage { get; } } If i want to routing my pagination to different action so i have to create new view model for encapsulate action name in it or even controller name. Another solution can be that sending this interfaced model to view then specify action and controller hard coded in pager method as parameter but i am losing totally re-usability of my view because it is strictly depends on just one action. Another thing is that they use below code in view Html.Pager(Model.PageSize, Model.PageNumber, Model.TotalItemCount) If the model is IPagedList why they don't provide an overload method like @Html.Pager(Model) or even better one is @Html.Pager(). You know that we know model type in this way. Before i was doing mistake because i was using Model.PageIndex instead of Model.PageNumber. Another big issue is they strongly rely on IQueryable interface. How they know that i use IQueryable in my data layer ? I would expected that they work simply with collections that is keep pagination implementation persistence ignorant. What is wrong about my improvement ideas over their pagination implementations ? What is their reason to not implement their paginations in this way ?
