How do I back up my system to a mobile (external) hard disk, and then recover from it when necessary?
I'm using windows XP
Also, does most ghost software back up only C: or all disks?
I've got a pile of .swf files here that are static animations, and I'd like to find some way of playing them at half or quarter speed. Preferably one that doesn't rely on exploiting sloppy browser/antivirus software processor usage.
Is there some sort of Windows-compatible Flash player with this functionality? Preferably open source?
my university created an outlook email for me [email protected] i can't see if the email uses pop3 or imap, i have only access to the mailbox, i sign it to it from hotmail.com, i don't want to check my email, i prefer to:

2)forward emails from the university email to my gmail

Has anybody had any experience using XXClone as a tool for cloning an existing installation of Windows in order to move it from an old PATA drive to a new, larger SATA without having to reinstall everything? Did you have any problems? Or can you recommend an alternative (free) software tool that you know - preferably from repeated experience - is reliable?
I'm looking to move Windows XP Home SP3 to a new disk: same file system, same partition size.
Thanks for looking.
I'm trying to setup my iPhone so that it is synced with 2 gmail contact lists. I'd prefer not to just "import" them and would like to avoid using any 3rd party software/sites. I have 1 gmail account setup as an exchange with gmail, contacts, and calendars.
I'm hoping someone can tell me how to do this.
I need to sign a PDF document.
However, Acrobat reader does not let me sign documents.
I just need to sign the document, not edit it.
Do I need to buy the full Acrobat software?
Or is there a better, simpler way?
Hey guys,
I have 2 LANs in my own PC & 2 Routers (TP-Link WR941N each) with 2 internet accounts (512Kbps each) connected to the same ISP signal & company using NanoStation 5 from ubnt.
As you know the connections work separately by default! (I use Windows 7 64bit)
Can I merge them to get double speed (download/upload simultaneously) using regedit or special software or any other method?
I'd be much appreciated if u could help me doing that
Best Regards, Salaam
Anyone have any experience with Windows Defender? Is it a replacement for antivirus software or something else to run alongside?
We are looking for something that isnt as bloated as McAfee 8.5i.
I know there are plenty of ways to download Flash video files (.flv) from the video sites like YouTube, etc. But if the site changes the procedure of download, most of the time, it will break.
Is there any generic way to download without depending on a particular site/software?
I just downloaded and installed the latest Ubuntu and it doesn't look like I'm used to. I don't see any Mercurial developer tools in the Ubuntu Software Center. I got on http://tortoisehg.bitbucket.org/download/index.html and it looks like it can be done, but I'm not entirely sure how. I've done some Googling but the results I keep running into are on older versions of Ubuntu. Any ideas on how I can make this happen?
Hello,
I am trying to search for a book that would teach me how to choose web server HW requirements (hard disk space/technology, ram, internet connection) based on web site statistics (requests per second, etc...), how to scale webservers in case my website is getter higher traffic, etc
All I get from the internet is software-related articles. Does anyone know how I can dig in for this kind of information? May be I am just searching using the wrong keywords.
Thanks
My system doesn't boot at all, upon starting it takes me to the Windows Error Recovery screen saying "Windows failed to start, a recent software or hardware change might be the cause" and gives two options
Launch System Repair (Recommended)
Start Windows normally
But neither options work, upon clicking either of them, some progress bars get displayed and the screen just freezes on "Starting Windows".
I tried booting from the Windows 7 disk but it too freezes on the "Starting Windows" screen.
I even tried booting from ubuntu, slax linux, but they don't work too.
Hi,
I just wanted to ask if there's a way to get admin password or access to admin acc without changing password or using any 3rd party software like running from cd or usb?
Thanks.
I have the a wrong license number in one SQL Server. What's gone down is this: We virtualized a physical server, effectively cloning its software and licenses - SQL Server included. We want to repurpose the physical machine by keeping SQL Server and modifying its license to another license key that we have purchased. Would prefer not to reinstall SQL Server. Can it be done?
Suppose I want to burn just the 6000th byte(if thats not possible say the 10th sector) on a CDR without touching anyother region. Sounds possible but is there any tool to accomplish this.
Yeah sure, there may be no clear point doing this but is this possible technically?.
(Doesnt matter maintaining the CDFS, integrity or whatever standard here. Just the task.)
It would be great to know if there are any software regarding this.
I have gone ahead and selected the Windows Classic theme in WIN7's "Window Color and Appearance" to turn off Aero.
I'm looking to replicate the "windows XP style" theme due to some screen recognition software that was built on an XP machine.
Is it possible to edit/import the "windows XP style" theme file and use it in WIN7?
I am mostly looking to get the colors/fonts similar. Windows/buttons would be good too.
I know how to view the VPN sessions currently logged in and how long that connection has been on but I want to be able to view a history of these activities over long periods of time. I don't think I need employee monitoring software...I just want to see who has VPNed overnight.
We are using Windows 2003. Any help is appreciated.
I need a pop3 email account setup that does not have the @domain.com in the username. It's for a piece of software that I am using that does not like seeing @domain.com in the username for setup. Any idea's? The account only needs to be accessed locally.
Is there any software that can be installed in Windows XP to set file permissions for guest accounts?
So that they would have to input a valid administrator password first before they can access the file?
I've seen a feature like this in Ubuntu, wherein even the administrator has to input the password over and over just to access a certain drive. But I need it in Windows XP.
When I share some folders on network, I can see users connected to me and who has which file opened in Computer-Manage.
Is it somehow possible to see a notice when a new user connects to me?
Is there a piece of software that would show me a popup window?
Is there a solution for Windows 7?
I co-own a company with a friend of mine and we have decided to buy a new server to support our business (our current server is an Asus EEE Box, working great but too limited :) ).
I should mention that we are web developers but occasionally we do small-office sys admin. Thus, 99% of time we work on GNU/Linux (mainly Ubuntu) but from time to time we need to setup a Windows environment to assist some customers (e.g. setup a temporary SQL Server 2008).
Our requirements:
Low budget: we don't want the cheapest solution out there but we can't afford to spend too much. Budget could be ~1000-1500€ (before VAT)
Robustness: we would like to setup a RAID array and maybe have an external disk where we can store backups
Virtualization: we need to be able to setup few servers for development. The scenario is something like this (~8 appliances running in parallel):
Redmine + GIT server
Bacula server
FTP server
3-4 virtual appliances that could be set up on demand to test our applications or support a customer. The appliances could be: LAMP, Tomcat+PostgreSQL, SQL Server
Support: if something breaks down it shouldn't be too difficult to find a replacement.
Now, given the main requirements, there are some doubts we need to clarify:
Do you suggest to buy a prepackaged solution (for example a customized Dell PowerEdge T110 or T310) or to assemble the server by ourselves (buy the separate components)?
What RAID configuration do you suggest? I was thinking of RAID1 (probably cheaper) or RAID5.
should we buy a hardware RAID controller or is it ok to use a software RAID (mdadm)? In case, which controller do you suggest?
What processor do you suggest (Intel Xeon, i3, i5, i7, AMD)? How much RAM? (I was thinking at least 8GB, ~1GB per appliance)
What virtualization software do you recommend? VMWare seems to be the best choice, but what about XEN or KVM? We don't want to buy licenses at the moment so we would like to consider only free options.
What OS do you recommend? We know Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo very well (we would like to use Ubuntu Server), however it seems a lot of people goes for CentOS.
Thanks in advance if you can help us with this!
It's our first "serious" server so many doubts popped up :)
Please feel free to add further recommendations if you have some to share ;)
Have a nice day
I am testing some software that offers as one of its features serving web pages from folders on a server. Is there is any "test site" that has been set up as part of a webserver test suite that I can mirror onto my server that would contain large files, small files, files of many different extensions, combinations of encoded characters, double encoded characters, and any other file or folder names that might trip up a misbehaving web server.
