• Server 2008 blue screen after login - no desktop

  I came into work today to find that our Windows Server 2008 used as a terminal server for the Thin Clients was not loading the users desktops. What I have found out is that when I login via Remote Desktop, after applying user settings, it gets to the stage of 'Preaparing your desktop', but then the screen just goes blue. I have tried rebooting several times with no luck, and logging in locally at the server with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not think that it could be a virus attack as we run antivirus on the server with OpenDNS filtering. Yesterday a software restriction policy was set up to only allow programs in the following directories to run if that could be the problem, although it was working fine all day yesterday. • How to detect hard disk failure?

  So, one of my servers has a hard disk failure. It also passes the test with smartctl --test=short /dev/sda. So, is smartctl a broken testing tool, or am I doing something completely off?

• Who would be the most efficacious Patron Saint of Programmers? [closed]

  The purpose of this question is to find someone out there to intercede for us and help our coding (not to magically align the bytes), to inspire our daily grind of software development by their lives of heroic virtue, to unite us under a common patron and to keep us on the straight and narrow path (i.e. don't be evil). In days of yore, the professional guilds had a patron saint. Regardless of whether we have a higher tendency to be atheists or not, who would you choose as the patron saint of programmers and what would be your criteria? Some people have chosen St. Isidore of Seville, but he's more like the patron saint of Wikipedia. If you're not Catholic please don't hesitate to nominate someone, just say what your criteria is. At the very least they should be dead and have lived a life of heroic virtue - or have died trying. It's a very pragmatic and noble custom which I heartily encourage. But if you find the practice off-putting, please don't be offended. I only mean to ask this question to other like minded programmers, which I have reason to believe exist. If you add a picture and a maybe make up a prayer that'd be excellent. It doesn't have to be gilded, illuminated and rhyme, although that would be sweet.

  Everyone has their own styles and technique for approaching and solving real world problems. These distinguish us from other people or other programmers. (Actually, I think it make us more desirable as programmers and improves computer science) To improve, we read a lot of books; for example, programming style, how to solve problems, how to approach problems, software and algorithms, et al. Can I learn your technique? In other words, if someone gives you a problem, at first step, what are you doing to solve it? I want learn the style in which you approach, analyze, and solve a problem. EDIT: every programmer is a unique instance; each of us approach problems and converge on solutions in our own... idiomatic manner. This manner is sometimes a quirk of training, a bias of tools, but often it is an insightful nugget, a little golden hammer that cracks nuts just slightly faster then others. When answering, give your general approaches but also take a moment to identify how you look at things in ways that your peers do not. Let's call this your Unique Solving Perspective, or USP.

• Is SQL Azure a newbies springboard?

  Earlier today I was considering the various SQL Server platforms that are available today and I wondered aloud, wonder how long until the majority of #sqlserver newcomers use @sqlazure instead of installing locally Let me explain. My first experience of development was way back in the early 90s when I would crank open VBA in Access or Excel and start hammering out some code, usually by recording macros and looking at the code that they produced (sound familiar?). The reason was simple, Office was becoming ubiquitous so the barrier to entry was incredibly low and, save for a short hiatus at university, I’ve been developing on the Microsoft platform ever since. These days spend most of my time using SQL Server. I take a look at SQL Azure today I see a lot of similarities with those early experiences, the barrier to entry is low and getting lower. I don’t have to download some software or actually install anything other than a web browser in order to get myself a fully functioning SQL Server  database against which I can ostensibly start hammering out some code and I believe that to be incredibly empowering. Having said that there are still a few pretty high barriers, namely: I need to get out my credit card Its pretty useless without some development tools such as SQL Server Management Studio, which I do have to install. The second of those barriers will disappear pretty soon when Project Houston delivers a web-based admin and presentation tool for SQL Azure so that just leaves the matter of my having to use a credit card. If Microsoft have any sense at all then they will realise the huge potential of opening up a free, throttled version of SQL Azure for newbies to party on; they get to developers early (just like they did with me all those years ago) and it gives potential customers an opportunity to try-before-they-buy.   I'm planning on setting up a small media center to achieve the following: I have multiple users who want to watch satellite channels I want them to be able to change the channel remotely I'm going to buy an external DVB to capture the signal Use some software to stream the channel that is selected I want to have 2 different channels at the same time, I assume I will need two DVB cards Users use VLC or Windows Media Player or whatever to view the channels How can I achieve this? I heard MythTV can do it? I tried to do some research I couldn't find enough information. Note: There's no copyright issue here. I'm streaming Free-To-Air (FTA) channels.

  For instance, i have video file which is 11.8 Gb, but my RAM memory only 2 Gb.. How does VLC (or other software) handle it? How do they load it into memory? I used VMMap tool (from sysinternals) to take a look at memory, and i saw: private 160000K working set 100000K Obviously, it's much less than 11.8 Gb -So how did it happen? This question is not only about video. I'd like to know how computer, in general, handles very large files.

• Bluetooth Issues Ubuntu 13.10

  I have a bluetooth headset which works perfectly on Ubuntu 13.04. Now I update to 13.10, and here is what's happing: After installing blueman, bluetooth-suport, pulseaudio-module-bluetooth and so on, I can find my device, pair it and connect to the headset service. But the device does not appear on the Sound Settings, so I just can't select it as input/output device. In other words, it's connected but "useless". So, searching around for solutions, I found a software called stream2ip. With this I can connect the device and it appears on the Sound Settings, the sound plays on the device as well, but I microphone does not work, even when selected on the settings, also the A2DP option still not working. Stream2ip isn't a solution at all, I mean everything was working without it in the previous Ubuntu version. Maybe I'm missing something, and I hope someone could give me any hint. And formally, the question: How can I get the A2DP output option and the input working again, on the Ubuntu 13.10? Thanks!

Thinking about the enterprise cloud, come to mind many possible configurations and new opportunities in enterprise environments. Various customers needs that serve as guides to this new trend are often very different, but almost always united by two main objectives: Elasticity of infrastructure both Hardware and Software Investments related to the progressive needs of the current infrastructure Characteristics of innovation and economy. A concrete use case that I worked on recently demanded the fulfillment of two basic requirements of economy and innovation.The client had the need to manage a variety of data cache, which can process complex queries and parallel computational operations, maintaining the caches in a consistent state on different server instances, on which the application was installed.In addition, the customer was looking for a solution that would allow him to manage the likely situations in load peak during certain times of the year.For this reason, the customer requires a replication site, on which convey part of the requests during periods of peak; the desire was, however, to prevent the immobilization of investments in owned hardware-software architectures; so, to respond to this need, it was requested to seek a solution based on Cloud technologies and architectures already offered by the market. Coherence can already now address the requirements of large cache between different nodes in the cluster, providing further technology to search and parallel computing, with the simultaneous use of all hardware infrastructure resources. Moreover, thanks to the functionality of "Push Replication", which can replicate and update the information contained in the cache, even to a site hosted in the cloud, it is satisfied the need to make resilient infrastructure that can be based also on nodes temporarily housed in the Cloud architectures. There are different types of configurations that can be realized using the functionality "Push-Replication" of Coherence. Configurations can be either: Active - Passive  Hub and Spoke Active - Active Multi Master Centralized Replication Whereas the architecture of this particular project consists of two sites (Site 1 and Site Cloud), between which only Site 1 is enabled to write into the cache, it was decided to adopt an Active-Passive Configuration type (Hub and Spoke). If, however, the requirement should change over time, it will be particularly easy to change this configuration in an Active-Active configuration type. Although very simple, the small sample in this post, inspired by the specific project is effective, to better understand the features and capabilities of Coherence and its configurations. Let's create two distinct coherence cluster, located at miles apart, on two different domain contexts, one of them "hosted" at home (on-premise) and the other one hosted by any cloud provider on the network (or just the same laptop to test it :)). These two clusters, which we call Site 1 and Site Cloud, will contain the necessary information, so a simple client can insert data only into the Site 1. On both sites will be subscribed a listener, who listens to the variations of specific objects within the various caches. To implement these features, you need 4 simple classes: CachedResponse.java Represents the POJO class that will be inserted into the cache, and fulfills the task of containing useful information about the hypothetical links navigation ResponseSimulatorHelper.java Represents a link simulator, which has the task of randomly creating objects of type CachedResponse that will be added into the caches CacheCommands.java Represents the model of our example, because it is responsible for receiving instructions from the controller and performing basic operations against the cache, such as insert, delete, update, listening, objects within the cache Shell.java It is our controller, which give commands to be executed within the cache of the two Sites So, summarily, we execute the java class "Shell", asking it to put into the cache 100 objects of type "CachedResponse" through the java class "CacheCommands", then the simulator "ResponseSimulatorHelper" will randomly create new instances of objects "CachedResponse ". Finally, the Shell class will listen to for events occurring within the cache on the Site Cloud, while insertions and deletions are performed on Site 1. Now, we realize the two configurations of two respective sites / cluster: Site 1 and Site Cloud.For the Site 1 we define a cache of type "distributed" with features of "read and write", using the cache class store for the "push replication", a functionality offered by the project "incubator" of Oracle Coherence.For the "Site Cloud" we expect even the definition of “distributed” cache type with tcp proxy feature enabled, so it can receive updates from Site 1.  Coherence Cache Config XML file for "storage node" on "Site 1" site1-prod-cache-config.xml Coherence Cache Config XML file for "storage node" on "Site Cloud" site2-prod-cache-config.xml For two clients "Shell" which will connect respectively to the two clusters we have provided two easy access configurations.  Coherence Cache Config XML file for Shell on "Site 1" site1-shell-prod-cache-config.xml Coherence Cache Config XML file for Shell on "Site Cloud" site2-shell-prod-cache-config.xml Now, we just have to get everything and run our tests. TEST 1The purpose of this test is to load the objects into the "Site 1" cache and seeing how many objects are cached on the "Site Cloud". Within the "Shell" launched with parameters to access the "Site 1", let’s write and run the command: load test/100 Within the "Shell" launched with parameters to access the "Site Cloud" let’s write and run the command: size passive-cache Expected result If all is OK, the first "Shell" has uploaded 100 objects into a cache named "test"; consequently the "push-replication" functionality has updated the "Site Cloud" by sending the 100 objects to the second cluster where they will have been posted into a respective cache, which we named "passive-cache". TEST 2The purpose of this test is to listen to deleting and adding events happening on the "Site 1" and that are replicated within the cache on "Cloud Site". In the "Shell" launched with parameters to access the "Site Cloud" let’s write and run the command: listen passive-cache/name like '%' or a "cohql" query, with your preferred parameters In the "Shell" launched with parameters to access the "Site 1" let’s write and run the following commands: load test/10 load test2/20 delete test/50 Expected result If all is OK, the "Shell" to Site Cloud let us to listen to all the add and delete events within the cache "cache-passive", whose objects satisfy the query condition "name like '%' " (ie, every objects in the cache; you could change the tests and create different queries).Through the Shell to "Site 1" we launched the commands to add and to delete objects on different caches (test and test2). With the "Shell" running on "Site Cloud" we got the evidence (displayed or printed, or in a log file) that its cache has been filled with events and related objects generated by commands executed from the" Shell "on" Site 1 ", thanks to "push-replication" feature.  Other tests can be performed, such as, for example, the subscription to the events on the "Site 1" too, using different "cohql" queries, changing the cache configuration,  to effectively demonstrate both the potentiality and  the versatility produced by these different configurations, even in the cloud, as in our case. • Building a DVR system for use with custom windows application (video analytics)

  Is there a good PCIe DVR capture card that has at least 4 channels as well as the hardware encoding? It would have to have decent driver support in Windows xp or windows 7. I have looked at various video capture cards as well as an integrated video capture card/motherboard from Huperlabs. But so far I have not found one with a decent review and that has good driver support that I can verify. A really small card would be nice because I am trying to get a fairly small form factor. Huperlabs stuff is pretty awesome but they are slow to get back to me and they bundle their analytics software with the hardware (extra cost for nothing) The dvr is being used for security.

• Outlook Search Folder - Unread Mail in shared mailbox

  I have a user who is trying to configure the Unread Mail search folder for a shared mailbox in Outlook 2007. I believe last time we accomplished this by doing an advanced find, and saving the search. However, on this computer I can't search more than one folder of the shared mailbox at a time. Everything I have read online says this isn't possible, but we have one user who has it set up and working perfectly. There's no additional software or indexing, not even Windows Desktop Search 4.0 updates installed.

• Drobo not mounting. Disk repair doesn't work either.

  Hi, While transferring data to my 2nd gen Drobo power went out. Now my Drobo is not mounting to my OS X 10.6.3 I have tried Disk Repair and this error message appears: Verify and Repair volume “disk1s2” Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume. Invalid key length Invalid record count Catalog file entry not found for extent The volume could not be verified completely. Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. I tried DiskWarrior too but it doesn't work either. It gives me that I need more memory to continue and software shuts down. Any one know solution to this one?

  I'm trying to check the state of the drives on a remote server running Debian wheezy. I'm using a software RAID10 on top of, I guess, xen, since the entries in /dev are /dev/xvda and /dev/xvdb But it I try smartctl -a /dev/xvda I get /dev/xvda: Unable to detect device type Smartctl: please specify device type with the -d option. I've tried various device type guesses, none work Similar problem with hddtemp, which reports ERROR: /dev/xvda: can't determine bus type (or this bus type is unknown) I've searched the smartmontools documentation, but can't find any discussion of virtual disks. . . How do I get behind the virtualisation to something smart tools or hddtemp can work with?

• Maybe I'm infected?

  In the last two weeks, when I was using MPC-HC (Media Player Classic Home Cinema) to watch some "justyfied" episodes, my F-Secure Client Security antivirus software alerted me that there was a threat in file A0027132.exe (the number increased each of the three times that the antivirus found a new threat). • How can I configure a Linksys EA4500 + usb printer for network printing (without connect cloud)

  The documentation and classic firmware (2.0.37) for Cisco's Linksys EA4500 is a bit sparse on setup details. It says I can connect a USB-printer, but then goes on to try to sell "Connect Cloud" remote management software. I don't want that. I just want to know how to set this up with the existing advanced firmware. Is it possible? AFAIK, to setup a IPP or LDP printer, there is usually some kind of queue configuration on the server (i.e. the ea4500 in this case), but I can't find it in the firmware. I also have been unable to find any existing protocols from win7 or mac osx. (windows network share, IPP/LDP etc.) I'm curious if I need to have the "Storage" accounts active and connect to my router either via the local IP or router name. There's a lot of unknowns here; it would help to know how this particular router actually works.

• Updating from OSX Lion 10.7.2 to 10.7.4

  I just got my Mac upgraded to 10.7.2, just to be able to install Xcode 4.3.3. However, when I try to install Xcode 4.3.3, it says that it requires a minimum of OSX 10.7.3. Then using the "Software Upgrade" tool it detects successfully for me that a combined upgrade to 10.7.4 is available. As I select Install Item, the download starts however, it fails after complete download (taking two hours) saying something like "the update cannot be saved". I have done this twice already, and followed it up until 5 minutes were left. I have also checked that there is enough space (60 GB) available on my hard disk, while the update requires around 1.5 GB. The question is what is causing the problem mentioned in bold above.

• Free NOSQL database for use with C# client [closed]

  I've never used NOSQL databases before, but so far it seems like the best data storage solution for my project. I am going to implement a datamining application. The data I would like to mine is thousands of documents which cannot be imported into datamining applications. To make to import easier and faster (than importing thousands of documents) I am planning to import these documents into a NOSQL database first and when import NOSQL database into datamining software. At the very least once I have all the data in NOSQL database I should be able to code simplest datamining logic myself. Am I correct that NOSQL databases allow to creates records of data, but they don't mandate all the records to adhere to the same data schema (same column names/types in a classic table oriended SQL databases)? I think for each document I would create a row/entry/object (not sure what is the correct term is in use in NOSQL world) which would be a string id, few (columns) with unstructured text data, and a dozens of columns mostly of datetime and integer types. From its name NOSQL does not support SQL query syntax, but it support locating the object(row/entry?) by its unique id. Does NOSQL support qyuering objects using property=value syntax? Unfortunately most of free NOSQL db only support Java/C++ clients, which free NOSQL db would you recommend for a C# programmer?

• IBM Bladecentre H Bootup

  I have a bladecentre with blades, network and a SAN in a single rack. What I'd like to do is control the startup of the bladecentre so that when the rack is powered on that the blades will delay their bootup until the SAN is powered on correctly. Is this even possible? We have an AMM in the chassis if that helps. Basically we are looking into the reboot that occurs after power is restored to a UPS. I sincerely apologise for the noobness of this question, but I am a software guy trying to help :)

• Xperia handset - cannot send files using bluetooth

  My friend has a Sony Ericsson Xperia (most probably X8) handset which is an Android based smartphone. He is not able to send files through bluetooth but able to receive. I don't exactly remember the version of Android which he is currently having. He has tried to download and install the required update using the same phone (he has internet connected) from http://www.sonyericsson.com but not able to install it. So, he asked me to help him. Which version of Android do you think he has? Does it seem like he does not have Android 2.1 installed. It is written here (click on Xperia X8) that If your phone already has Android 2.1, you can use your mobile network* or a WiFi connection to download the software. Is it possible that he does not have updated Android and so not able to download? If so, does he need to upgrade to Android 2.1 first? Should it be done by connecting it to a PC?

• Switch computer off automatically when the internet is disconnected

  Is there any free software that will detect the status of internet and shutdown the system when the internet disconnects? Or (more generally) can something run a task when the internet disconnects, and I can route it to shutdown the machine? I am downloading things overnight. But my problem is that sometimes the internet connection will be disconnected in the middle of the night, so there is no point in keeping the system running the rest of the night. So I need to avoid this problem by detecting the net connectivity.
