• Is my current employer expecting too much?

  This is my first job as a programmer.I am working on ASP.NET/C#,HTML,CSS,Javascript/Jquery. I am working for a firm which develops software for small banking firms. Currently they have their software running in 100 firms.Their software is developed in Visual Fox Pro. I was hired to develop online version of this software.I am the solo developer. My boss is another developer.So my company has two developers. My boss doesnot have any idea about .NET development.I am working on their project since 8 months.The progress is surely there but not very big. I try my best to do what my boss asks.But the project just seems too ambitious for me. The company doesnot have any planning for the project.They just ask me to develop what their older software provides.So I have to deal with front end , back end,review codes , design architecture and etc. I have decided to give my best.I try a lot.But the project sometimes just seems to be overwhelming. So my questions is , is it normal for a programmer to be in this place. I always feel the need to work in atleast a small team if not big one. Are my employers just expecting too much of a fresher.Or is that I being a programmer am lacking the skills to deal with this. I am just not able judge my condition.Also I am paid very low salary.I do work on saturday as well. Can anyone just help me judge this scenario? Any suggestions are welcome.

• Searching Your PL/SQL Source with Oracle SQL Developer

  Version 3.2.1 included a few tweaks along with several hundred bug fixes. One of those tweaks was the addition of ‘ALL_SOURCE’ as a selection for the Type drop down in the Find Database Object panel. Scroll ALL the way down to the bottom Searching the database for your code or objects can be expensive. The ALL_SOURCE view comes in pretty handy when I want to demo how to cancel long running queries or the Task Progress panel – did you know you can manage all of your long running queries here? Yeah, don’t run this I pretty much hosed our demo pod at Open World b/c I ran that same query but added an ORDER BY b.TEXT DESC to the query and blew up the TEMP space and filled the primary partition on the image. Fun stuff. Anyways, where was I going with this? Oh yeah, searching ALL_SOURCE can be expensive. So we took it out of the product for awhile. And now it’s back in. If you select the ‘ALL’ field, it doesn’t actually search EVERYTHING, because that would probably be less than helpful. So if you want to search your PL/SQL objects for a scrap or bit of code, use the ‘ALL_SOURCE’ option in v3.2.1 Double-Click on the search results to go to the code you’re looking for. Be careful what you search for. Just like any query, it could take awhile.

• Guide to the web development ecosystem

  I'm a long-time software developer, and I've been thrown in the deep, deep end of developing from the ground up what will hopefully be a highly scalable and interactive web application. I've been out of the web game for about 8 years, and even when I was last in it, I wasn't exactly on the cutting edge. I think I've made judicious design decisions and I'm quite happy with the progress I've been making so far, but new, hot web technologies keep crawling out of the woodwork and into my headspace, forcing me to continually revalidate my implementation decisions. Complicating things even further is the preponderance of out-of-date information and the difficulty of knowing what is out of date in the first place. What I'm wondering is, are there any comprehensive books or guides dedicated to compiling and comparing the technologies out there, end-to-end in the web application stack? I'm happy to learn new techs on demand, but I don't like learning about them after I've already spent time going in another direction. I'm looking for the sort of executive info a CTO might read to make sure the best architectural decisions are being made. And just to be clear, this is a question about resources, not about specific technology suggestions.

• Scaling Scrum within a group of 100s of programmers

  Most Scrum teams lean toward 7-15 people **, though it's not clear how to scale Scrum among 100s of people, or how the effectiveness of a given team might be compared to another team within the group; meaning beyond just breaking the group into Scrum teams of 7-15 people, it's unclear how efforts between the teams are managed, compared, etc. Any suggestions related to either of these topics, or additional related topics that might be of more importance to account for in planning a large scale SCRUM grouping? ** In reviewing research related to the suggested size of software development teams, which appears to be the basis for the suggested Scrum team size, I found what appears to be an error in the research which oddly appears to show that bigger teams (15+ ppl), not smaller teams (7 ppl) are better. UPDATE, "Re: Scrum doesn't scale": Made huge amounts of progress on personally researching the topic, but thought I'd respond to the general belief of some that Scrum doesn't scale by citing a quote from Succeeding with Agile by Mike Cohn : Scrum Does Scale: You have to admire the intellectual honesty of the earliest agile authors. They were all very careful to say that agile methodolgies like Scrum were for small projects. This conservatism wasn’t because agile or Scrum turned out to be unsuited for large projects but because they hadn’t used these processes on large projects and so were reluctant to advise their readers to do so. But, in the years since the Agile Manifesto and the books that came shortly before and after it, we have learned that the principles and practices of agile development can be scaled up and applied on large projects, albeit it with a considerable amount of overhead. Fortunately, if large organizations use the techniques described regarding the role of the product owner, working with a shared product backlog, being mindful of dependencies, coordinating work among teams, and cultivating communities of practice, they can successfully scale a Scrum project. • Panning with the OpenGL Camera / View Matrix

  I'm gonna try this again I've been trying to setup a simple camera class with OpenGL but I'm completely lost and I've made zero progress creating anything useful. I'm using modern OpenGL and the glm library for matrix math. To get the most basic thing I can think of down, I'd like to pan an arbitrarily positioned camera around. That means move it along its own Up and Side axes. Here's a picture of a randomly positioned camera looking at an object: It should be clear what the Up (Green) and Side (Red) vectors on the camera are. Even though the picture shows otherwise, assume that the Model matrix is just the identity matrix. Here's what I do to try and get it to work: Step 1: Create my View/Camera matrix (going to refer to it as the View matrix from now on) using glm::lookAt(). Step 2: Capture mouse X and Y positions. Step 3: Create a translation matrix mapping changes in the X mouse position to the camera's Side vector, and mapping changes in the Y mouse position to the camera's Up vector. I get the Side vector from the first column of the View matrix. I get the Up vector from the second column of the View matrix. Step 4: Apply the translation: viewMatrix = glm::translate(viewMatrix,translationVector); But this doesn't work. I see that the mouse movement is mapped to some kind of perpendicular axes, but they're definitely not moving as you'd expect with respect to the camera. Could someone please explain what I'm doing wrong and point me in the right direction with this camera stuff?

• Google Analytics checkout page tracking problem

  I am running a multilingual website, each lang on a different domain name. I am trying to lead all purchase requests to the checkout progress, which has its own domain too. In order to keep Google Analytics tracking I've updated the Google Analytics code accordingly. I set the source domain to 'multiple top-level domains'. Everything is going fine so far unless in E-commerce Overview; the "Sources / Medium" is always showing as (direct) - or the name of the source domain. Since I am redirecting using PHP header(location:.. etc.) the Google _link method doesn't seem to be working properly - I want to focus on two questions: Should I create a new profile for the checkout domain in Google Analytics? (I am now using the profile ID of the source domain even though I move to the checkout domain, si that OK?) When I'm trying to pass the cookies of the source domain to the checkout domain, I notice that the Google cookies are copied to the new domain (the cookie path is .checkout-domain/) and they have the same values of the original cookies - But for some reason another set of cookies is created once I access a page with google analytics code in the checkout pages, with different values (same path). Feels like I'm doing something wrong here, so my question is - What am I doing wrong here? Does anyone have an idea how to pass the cookies to the checkout domain?

• Character progression through leveling, skills or items?

  I'm working on a design for an RPG game, and I'm having some doubts about the skill and level system. I'm going for a more casual, explorative gaming experience and so thought about lowering the game complexity by simplifying character progression. But I'm having trouble deciding between the following: Progression through leveling, no complex skill progression, leveling increases base stats. Progression through skills, no leveling or base stat changes, skills progress through usage. Progression through items, more focus on stat-changing items, items confer skills, no leveling. However, I'm uncertain what the effects on gameplay might be in the end. So, my question is this: What would be the effects of choosing one of the above alternatives over the others? (Particularly with regards to the style and feel of the gameplay) My take on it is that the first sacrifices more frequent rewards and customization in favor of a simpler gameplay; the second sacrifices explicit customization and player control in favor of more frequent rewards and a somewhat simpler gameplay; while the third sacrifices inventory simplicity and a player metric in favor of player control, customization and progression simplicity. Addendum: I'm not really limiting myself to the above three, they are just the ones I liked most and am primarily interested in.

• Screen lock broken when using separate x screens

  For some reason, the screen lock appears to be broken when I use separate x screens (it works fine if I use twin view or just one monitor, though). If I wait for the screen to lock (or if I tell it to lock), it fades to black, showing only the mouse cursor. However, when I move the mouse to bring up the password prompt, nothing happens, the screens remain completely blank. Furthermore, it would appear that the screen lock never activated in the first place, for two reasons: one, if I blindly enter my password and press enter, nothing happens; and two, if I press ctrl+alt+delete and then enter it logs me out (which shouldn't happen if the password prompt is there, right), losing any progress I have on any of the open programs (meaning, not a very friendly option for a programmer ;) ). So yeah, does anyone know why this is happening, and how to fix it? Thanks! Notes: I am using Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit. I am using gnome-classic, but the same problem occurs when I use unity. I do not have xscreensaver, nor do I have any screen savers running (except, I guess for the default blank one).

A little over 2 years ago when Oracle completed its acquisition of Sun, a lot of community speculation arose regarding Oracle's Java commitment. Whether the fears and concerns were legitimate or not, the only way to emphatically demonstrate Oracle's seriousness with moving Java forward was through positive action. In 2010, Oracle committed to putting Java back on schedule whereby large gaps between release trains would be a thing of the past. And in 2011, that promise came true. With the 2011 summer release of JDK 7, the Java ecosystem now had a version brought up to date. And then in the fall of 2011, JavaFX 2.0 righted the JavaFX ship making rich internet applications a reality. Similar progress between Oracle and the Java community continues to blossom. • What can I do about rsync of large files killing my laptop's wifi connection

  When I run a rsync to backup my home folder over the network like so: rsync -avhz --progress --delete /home/dbdean/ [email protected]:/home/backups/david/ I seem to have problems with my quite large .VirtualBox/HardDisks/Windows XP.vdi file. Occasionally the wifi will silently fail (the transfer stops, and any other network access is broken). If I reconnect the wifi to my network before the transfer times out, it happily keeps going (and other network access is back), but I can't just leave it unattended most of the time, as I have to keep an eye on it. I'm guessing this is probably a bug in the wireless card related to a particularly high sustained volume of network usage, but I'm not really sure where to start with diagnosing this problem so that I can provide a good bug report. Or it could be something else, I guess. Any help would be appreciated. My network card is an Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285, as lspci -k shows: 43:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc.   The first Bay Area JUG Roundup (#roundup10) convened at Oracle HQ on Wednesday evening, in the palatial surroundings of the Oracle Conference Center. (Yes, there will be more!) A couple hundred people were there, I'd say. More came out of this meetup than a bunch of new contacts and some mild indigestion (or even a mild hangover): - We (meaning, Oracle) announced the opening of the eight annual Duke's Choice Awards. As described on the Web page, "The awards celebrate extreme innovation in the world of Java technology and are granted to the best and most innovative projects using the Java platform." Entries will be accepted through July 1, with winners announced at JavaOne 2010. - Even more exciting, we offered a sneak preview of the Java Road Trip, a cross-country, 20-stop bus tour this Summer involving one rock-star bus, one full-time blogger/videographer, a whole bunch of Java demos and speakers, and lots of beer and prizes. Stay tuned for more info about this. - Sonya Barry, Java.net community manager, announced the beta.java.net project - which will be the end result of the java.net migration to a Kenai back-end and retooled social/community layer (already in progress). Sonya also announced that Maven support for Java.net projects is imminent, with just a contract to be signed in the next couple of weeks. Finally, we were all treated to a typically hilarious Java Posse appearance. Arun Gupta has posted photos as well as meetup slideware at his blog. • Installing 10.10+ with Radeon HD 6970 Video Card

  I built a new PC that has a Diamond Radeon HD 6970 graphics card, and no on-board graphics. When I boot from the Ubuntu disc, it runs through some initial booting stuff, and then gets to a loading screen that just has the Ubuntu logo and some progress bar/dot thingies. After this screen is finished, it goes black and says it cannot display video mode. I've seen many people that say to simply install the ati drivers. However, I don't believe this is an option, because I can't even get to the boot screen that asks me if I want to run the system off of the LiveCD, boot to hard disk, etc... Is there a way to somehow boot to a CLI before getting to the screen that would normally let me choose that? I'm at a loss as far as what to do. Also: Yes, the CD boots fine on other machines. (I've also burnt a couple discs just to be sure) Yes, the graphics card is fine. I normally dual-boot with Windows 7, and it runs on Windows just fine. Thanks for any help!

  Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite time tracking tips, tricks, and tools. Now we’re back to highlight the techniques HTG readers use to keep tabs on their time. While more than one of you expressed confusion over the idea of tracking how you spend all your time, many of you were more than happy to share the reasons for and the methods you use to stay on top of your time expenditures. Scott uses a fluid and flexible project management tool: I use kanbanflow.com, with two boards to manage task prioritisation and backlog. One board called ‘Current Work’ has three columns ‘Do Today’, ‘In Progress’ and ‘Done’. The other is called ‘Backlog’, which splits tasks into priority groups – ‘Distractions (NU+NI)’, ‘Goals (NU+I)’, ‘Interruptions (U+NI)’, ‘Interruptions (U+NI)’ and ‘Critical (U+I)’, where U is Urgent and I is Important (and N is Not). At the end of each day, I move things from my Backlog to my ‘Current Work’ board, with the idea to keep complete Goals before they become Critical. That way I can focus on ‘Current Work’ Do Today so I don’t feel overwhelmed and can plan my day. As priorities change or interruptions pop up, it’s just a matter of moving tasks between boards. I have both tabs open in my browser all day – this is probably good for knowledge workers strapped to their desk, not so good for those in meetings all day. • What GUI tools are available for which DVCS?

  When I worked at Sun, we used a DVC system called Forte SCCS/Teamware, which used the old SCCS file format, but was a true distributed source code revision control system. One nice feature is that it had strong GUI support: You could bringover and putback changes by simply clicking and dragging. It would draw trees/graphs showing how workspaces relate to each other. You also could have a graph view to display a single file's complete history, which might have had several branches and merges. Allowing you to compare any two points. It also had a strong visual merge tool, to let you accept changes from one of two conflicting files. Naturally, many of the current DVCSs have command line support for these operations, but I'm looking for GUI support in order to use this in a lower-level undergraduate course I'll be teaching. I'm not saying the Forte Teamware solution was perfect, but it did seem to be ahead of the curve. Unfortunately, it's not a viable option to use for my class. Question: What support do the current DVCSs have with regards to GUIs? Do any of them work on Windows, and not just Linux? Are they "ready for prime-time" or still works in progress? Are these standalone or built as plug-ins, e.g., for Eclipse? Note: To help keep this discussion focused I'm only interested in GUI tools. And not a meta-discussion if GUI tools should be used in teaching.

• Properly force SSL with .htaccess, no double authentication

  I'm trying to force SSL with .htaccess on a shared host. This means there I only have access to .htaccess and not the vhosts config. I know you can put a rule in the VirtualHost config file to force SSL which will be picked up there (and acted upon first), preventing double authentication, but I can't get to that. Here's the progress I've made: Config 1 This works pretty well but it does force double authentication if you visit http://site.com - once for http and then once for https. Once you are logged in, it automatically redirects http://site.com/page1.html to the https coutnerpart just fine: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301] RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !(^www\.site\.com*)$ RewriteRule (.*) https://www.site.com$1 [R=301,L] AuthName "Locked" AuthUserFile "/home/.htpasswd" AuthType Basic require valid-user Config 2 If I add this to the top of the file, it works a lot better in that it will switch to SSL before prompting for the password: SSLOptions +StrictRequire SSLRequireSSL SSLRequire %{HTTP_HOST} eq "site.com" ErrorDocument 403 https://site.com It's clever how it will use the SSLRequireSSL option and the ErrorDocument403 to redirect to the secure version of the site. My only complaint is that if you try and access http://site.com/page1.html it will redirect to https://site.com/ So it is forcing SSL without a double-login, but it is not properly forwarding non-SSL resources to their SSL counterparts. Regarding the first config, Insyte mentioned "using mod_rewrite to perform a simple redirect is a bit of overkill. Use the Redirect directive instead. It's possible this may even fix your problem, as I believe mod_rewrite rules are some of the last directives to be processed, just before the file is actually grabbed from the filesystem" I have not had no such luck on finding a force-ssl config option with the redirect directive and so have been unable to test this theory.
