  • SQL Server 2008 R2 upgrade fails on upgrade rule check

    I'm trying to upgrade an evaluation instance of SQL Server 2008 to a fully licensed instance of SQL Server 2008 R2. I made it most of the way through the installer, but I'm getting stopped at the Upgrade Rules page - the SQL Server Analysis Services Upgrade Service Functional Check is failing. The specific error I get: Rule "SQL Server Analysis Services Upgrade Service Functional Check" failed. The current instance of the SQL Server Analysis Services service cannot be upgraded because the Analysis Services service is disabled or not online. Please start the service and then run the upgrade rules check again. Simple enough - just need to start the service. Here's where it gets troublesome. When I open Services and go to start the SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service, it provides me the following message: The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. Trying from the command line as Administrator yields: PS C:\Windows\System32 net start MSSQLServerOLAPService The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service is starting... The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service could not be started. The service did not report an error. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534. I've tried changing the logon setting of this service to Administrator, a user with admin privileges, and both the Local System and Network Service accounts - nothing works. In addition, when I look at the service through the SQL Server Configuration Manager (also run as Administrator), attempting to change the logon setting for the service results in the message: The server threw an exception. [0x80010105] I have no need for analysis services themselves - all I need is for this one service to be running long enough to do the R2 upgrade, then it can shut down again. Any thoughts on how to get the Analysis Services service running? Update: Checking the event log, I found an error logged to the Application log from the MSSQLServerOLAPService. It has event ID 0, task category (289), and says: The service cannot be started: XML parsing failed at line 1, column 4: Unrecognized input signature.

  • Problem exporting SQL Server management Studio Express to Go Daddy

    I'm having a terrible time exporting SQL Server Management Studio Express tables to the Go Daddy webserver. Go Daddy support can't help either. I started by using Microsoft Database Publishing Wizard for SQL Server thinking it would be 'easy'....not! I ran into user/password errors even though I was using the user and password that was created for the SQL database in the Go Daddy site. I called help desk support at Go Daddy and went through several iterations of processes to get the thing working but it didn't. Finally, the support guy acted like his phone went on the blip and scuttled away. There has got to be someway to upload SQL Server to a webserver without a lot of drama. Any suggestions?

  • Weird vps server issue

    I have an unmanaged linux vps Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). I have LNMP installed. Also php-fpm php-apc, varnish, memcache. I have (or rather had) several live sites on it. under normal load the server uses ~700 mb memory. But since last night its using only 20mb~ memory and a lot of the services seems to be down (according to htop) I only see nginx working and mysql starts up and goes does every few minutes on a loop.   • VS 2010 SP1 (Beta) and IIS Express

    Last month we released the VS 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Beta.  You can learn more about the VS 2010 SP1 Beta from Jason Zander’s two blog posts about it, and from Scott Hanselman’s blog post that covers some of the new capabilities enabled with it.  You can download and install the VS 2010 SP1 Beta here. IIS Express Earlier this summer I blogged about IIS Express.  IIS Express is a free version of IIS 7.5 that is optimized for developer scenarios.  We think it combines the ease of use of the ASP.NET Web Server (aka Cassini) currently built-into VS today with the full power of IIS.  Specifically: It’s lightweight and easy to install (less than 5Mb download and a quick install) It does not require an administrator account to run/debug applications from Visual Studio It enables a full web-server feature set – including SSL, URL Rewrite, and other IIS 7.x modules It supports and enables the same extensibility model and web.config file settings that IIS 7.x support It can be installed side-by-side with the full IIS web server as well as the ASP.NET Development Server (they do not conflict at all) It works on Windows XP and higher operating systems – giving you a full IIS 7.x developer feature-set on all Windows OS platforms IIS Express (like the ASP.NET Development Server) can be quickly launched to run a site from a directory on disk.  It does not require any registration/configuration steps. This makes it really easy to launch and run for development scenarios. Visual Studio 2010 SP1 adds support for IIS Express – and you can start to take advantage of this starting with last month’s VS 2010 SP1 Beta release. Downloading and Installing IIS Express IIS Express isn’t included as part of the VS 2010 SP1 Beta.  Instead it is a separate ~4MB download which you can download and install using this link (it uses WebPI to install it).  Once IIS Express is installed, VS 2010 SP1 will enable some additional IIS Express commands and dialog options that allow you to easily use it. Enabling IIS Express for Existing Projects Visual Studio today defaults to using the built-in ASP.NET Development Server (aka Cassini) when running ASP.NET Projects: Converting your existing projects to use IIS Express is really easy.  You can do this by opening up the project properties dialog of an existing project, and then by clicking the “web” tab within it and selecting the “Use IIS Express” checkbox. Or even simpler, just right-click on your existing project, and select the “Use IIS Express…” menu command: And now when you run or debug your project you’ll see that IIS Express now starts up and runs automatically as your web-server: You can optionally right-click on the IIS Express icon within your system tray to see/browse all of sites and applications running on it: Note that if you ever want to revert back to using the ASP.NET Development Server you can do this by right-clicking the project again and then select the “Use Visual Studio Development Server” option (or go into the project properties, click the web tab, and uncheck IIS Express).  This will revert back to the ASP.NET Development Server the next time you run the project. IIS Express Properties Visual Studio 2010 SP1 exposes several new IIS Express configuration options that you couldn’t previously set with the ASP.NET Development Server.  Some of these are exposed via the property grid of your project (select the project node in the solution explorer and then change them via the property window): For example, enabling something like SSL support (which is not possible with the ASP.NET Development Server) can now be done simply by changing the “SSL Enabled” property to “True”: Once this is done IIS Express will expose both an HTTP and HTTPS endpoint for the project that we can use: SSL Self Signed Certs IIS Express ships with a self-signed SSL cert that it installs as part of setup – which removes the need for you to install your own certificate to use SSL during development.  Once you change the above drop-down to enable SSL, you’ll be able to browse to your site with the appropriate https:// URL prefix and it will connect via SSL. One caveat with self-signed certificates, though, is that browsers (like IE) will go out of their way to warn you that they aren’t to be trusted: You can mark the certificate as trusted to avoid seeing dialogs like this – or just keep the certificate un-trusted and press the “continue” button when the browser warns you not to trust your local web server. Additional IIS Settings IIS Express uses its own per-user ApplicationHost.config file to configure default server behavior.  Because it is per-user, it can be configured by developers who do not have admin credentials – unlike the full IIS.  You can customize all IIS features and settings via it if you want ultimate server customization (for example: to use your own certificates for SSL instead of self-signed ones). We recommend storing all app specific settings for IIS and ASP.NET within the web.config file which is part of your project – since that makes deploying apps easier (since the settings can be copied with the application content).  IIS (since IIS 7) no longer uses the metabase, and instead uses the same web.config configuration files that ASP.NET has always supported – which makes xcopy/ftp based deployment much easier. Making IIS Express your Default Web Server Above we looked at how we can convert existing sites that use the ASP.NET Developer Web Server to instead use IIS Express.  You can configure Visual Studio to use IIS Express as the default web server for all new projects by clicking the Tools->Options menu  command and opening up the Projects and Solutions->Web Projects node with the Options dialog: Clicking the “Use IIS Express for new file-based web site and projects” checkbox will cause Visual Studio to use it for all new web site and projects. Summary We think IIS Express makes it even easier to build, run and test web applications.  It works with all versions of ASP.NET and supports all ASP.NET application types (including obviously both ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC applications).  Because IIS Express is based on the IIS 7.5 codebase, you have a full web-server feature-set that you can use.  This means you can build and run your applications just like they’ll work on a real production web-server.  In addition to supporting ASP.NET, IIS Express also supports Classic ASP and other file-types and extensions supported by IIS – which also makes it ideal for sites that combine a variety of different technologies. Best of all – you do not need to change any code to take advantage of it.  As you can see above, updating existing Visual Studio web projects to use it is trivial.  You can begin to take advantage of IIS Express today using the VS 2010 SP1 Beta.     I have a very simple MVC 4 application I'm trying to deploy to a Windows 2012 server. Inconsistently, when navigating to the root of the web application (http://localhost/app), it returns a 403.14-Forbidden: Detailed Error Information: Module: DirectoryListingModule Notification: ExecuteRequestHandler Handler: StaticFile Error Code: 0x00000000 Requested URL: http://localhost:80/test1/ Physical Path: c:\apps\test1\ Logon Method: Negotiate The web application is: Is a very vanilla VS2012 MVC4 Intranet template -- with only a tweak to a label to prove things were working. runs in an Integrated v4.0 application pool setup to use Windows authentication application pool has a custom AD Identity assigned (so it can gain access to a SQL server) application pool identity has read permissions in the c:\apps\test1 folder in which it is running It's an MVC4 application, targeting .NET 4.0 currently -There's no default document in an MVC4 application (like a default.aspx), as there shouldn't need to be one. I don't want to enable directory listings (as that's not the real error). Installed: Roles / Web Server (IIS) / Appliation Development / (.NET 4.5 Extensibility, Application Initialization, ASP.NET 4.5, ISAP Extensions, ISAPI Filters, WebSocket Protocol) Works locally on my machine in IISExpress on Windows 8 Has configured in web.config: <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" /> is set to precompiled during publish When I change the precompiled option to false, the web application does not fail (in my testing at least, it seems to work consistently). The reason I say it's inconsistent is that I've seen it work, then I've published, and the error returns. I can't find a pattern to the issue (and right now, I haven't been able to get it work again, at all). The 403 is returned from a local or remote web browser. I've had trouble finding a solution that isn't intended for older versions of Windows (like suggestions to reinstall ASP.NET which won't work on Windows 2012). I really don't know what else to try.

  • PXE with WDS & Windows Server 2012 - no filename option in DHCP lease?

    I'm trying to configure Windows Server 2012 (a virtual box VM) with WDS so I can PXE boot some Windows 7 VMs (also virtual box). All the machines involved are only attached to the "host only network", 192.168.56.0/24. The Server 2012 machine has been setup as an AD DS machine, has DNS installed and working along with DHCP with option 60 - PXEClient - set and WDS is set to not listen on DHCP ports. I've followed http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj648426.aspx very closely. I've used the boot.wim and install.wim files from the Win 7 installation DVD and they're configured as 'boot' and 'installation' images respectively. When I boot the target machine, it gets an IP address, but I simply get 'no filename' and the boot won't proceed any further. I've tried setting option 66 to 192.168.56.2 (the WDS server) and option 67 to both Boot\x64\wdsnbp.com and Boot\x64\pxeboot.n12 but all to no avail. I can't seem to see anything in the event log, either. Can anyone out there spot what I'm doing wrong? Or give tips to narrow down a diagnostic?

  • ConfigMgr 2012 - How to automatically make updates available to computers without forcing them to be installed?

    I'm using System Center Configuration Manager 2012 with the Software Update Point feature; however, in this environment patching has to be strictly manual, because server reboots need to be approved and scheduled by different people; thus, I need to use ConfigMgr's SUP like I would use a plain WSUS server with auto-approval but with manual installation. I created some Automatic Deployment Rules to automatically download and deploy critical updates, and to have an installation dealine of "as soon as possible"; but then, I've also configured those rules to not do anything when the deadline is reached, and to not perform system restarts even if needed (see image). Also, I've configured the device collection to where those rules deploy updates to not have any valid maintencance window. However, I'm experiencing quite the opposite as what I was expecting: as soon as the new updates are processed by the ADRs, they get automatically installed on all systems by the Software Center, and the computers are subsequently restarted. Why is this happening? Am I getting something wrong or is just ConfigMgr 2012 not behaving like it should?

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Terminal Server : Internet Explorer Enhanced Security won't disable for Users

    The Internet Explorer Enhanced Security (IEES) won't disable using the normal method of disabling it from the Add/Remove Programs/Windows components. This came to light immediately after testing. IEES was disabled after Terminal Services were installed for admin and users, and after IE8 was installed. My initial thoughts were that there was some clash between IE8 and IE6 (which is the default on 2003 R2), so I uninstalled IE8 and reverted back to IE6. The same symptoms were displayed, when a normal user logged on Internet Explorer Enhnaced Security was enforced. I then thought it could be a problem that Terminal Server wasn't recognising the removal as IEES was on when initially installed. I uninistalled the Terminal Server Componants using the server roles, and then reactivated and deavtived IEES. Windows Server 2003 R2 allows a limited number of users to connect to RDP by default, so I logged on as a normal user, and IEES was disabled. I then reinstalled Terminal Server, and logged on as a normal user. IEES was back enabled. Why is this?

  • Can't remotely connect through SQL Server Management Studio

    I have setup a SQL Server 2008 Express instance on a dedicated Windows 2008 Server hosted by 1and1.com. I cannot connect remotely to the server through management studio. I have taken the following steps below and am beyond any further ideas. I have researched the site and cannot figure anything else out so please forgive me if I missed something obvious, but I'm going crazy. Here's the lowdown. The SQL Server instance is running and works perfectly when working locally. In SQL Server Management Studio, I have checked the box "Allow Remote Connections to this Server" I have removed any external hardware firewall settings from the 1and1 admin panel Windows firewall on the server has been disabled, but just for kicks I added an inbound rule that allows for all connections on port 1433. In SQL Native Client configuration, TCP/IP is enabled. I also made sure the "IP1" with the server's IP address had a 0 for dynamic port, but I deleted it and added 1433 in the regular TCP Port field. I also set the "IPALL" TCP Port to 1433. In SQL Native Client configuration, SQL Server Browser is also running and I also tried adding an ALIAS in the I restarted SQL server after I set this value. Doing a "netstat -ano" on the server machine returns a TCP 0.0.0.0:1433 LISTENING UDP 0.0.0.0:1434 LISTENING I do a port scan from my local computer and it says that the port is FILTERED instead of LISTENING. I also tried to connect from Management studio on my local machine and it is throwing a connection error. Tried the following server names with SQL Server and Windows Authentication marked in the database security. ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS,1433 ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS ipaddress ipaddress,1433 tcp:ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS tcp:ipaddress\SQLEXPRESS,1433

  • My dedicated server keeps getting very slow that it fails to load the application

    I have an application running on Windows Server 2008, running IIS 7.5, SQL Server 2008, 4GB RAM from brinkster. The problem is, every couple of days I get the same 10,000 calls that the system is very slow, and its not operating properly, then after 30 minutes of that it just fails to load. I try to access the server from the remote desktop connection but I can't access it. The only way it I can get it working again is to call the support at brinkster and have them do a manual reboot of the server. After that it works well for some time, and the it re-crashes after some time. Support over there, are not helping a lot.

  • MSSQL 2005 migration to 2008 Express Edition - Any complications?

    Hey, I've developed an application that uses ASP.NET, Linq-to-SQL and MSSQL 2005. However, I would like to migrate it to MSSQL 2008. I don't have MSSQL 2008, so I was wondering if it's possible for me to detach my 2005 db and attach it within 2008 express edition, to test if it will work on my host's MSSQL 2008 server? I haven't done anything complicated (CRUD is done from Linq to SQL, and all stored procs are the ASP.NET Membership default ones). Would this work, or will I get an error since I'm 'downgrading' so to speak? If I download MSSQL 2008 express edition, it will be on the same system as my MSSQL 2005 Developer Edition. I'm hoping this won't cause any problems? Thanks

I also tried to repair the install and completely reinstall it with no luck :(. Then it does not pop up for 5-6 runs, and then starts again. Anyone knows why is this happening? I have just installed clean W8.1 64 bit, VS2013 and TFS 2013 (although I had the same problem with W8 and VS2012, but not as often).

But the issue is that I want that same tables with all the entered data into SQL Server 2005 (SQLEXPRESS). Obviously it won't work by taking a backup and restore it into SQL Server 2005 as it won't support backward compatibility. Any suggestion would be appreciated....

  • Visual Studio Express 2012 debug mode doesn't work

    I have a project in Visual Studio that I have been working on for a while, and I have used the debugger extensively. Recently I changed some settings and I have lost the ability to stop the program and step through code. I can't figure out what I had changed that might have affected this. If I put a breakpoint in my code and try to have the program stop there, it doesn't. The break point shows up white with a red outline. If I hover the mouse over it, it says "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No executable code of the debugger's target code type is associated with this line. Possible causes include: conditional compilation, compiler optimizations, or the target architecture of this line is not supported by the current debugger code type." I know for a fact that the program executes the code where the breakpoint is because I put the breakpoint in the beginning of the InitializeComponent method. The program displays the window fine, but does not stop at the breakpoint. Yes, I am running in debug mode. It seems as though there is a disconnect between the compiled code and the source code displayed. Does anyone know what that would be, or know which compiler settings I should check to re-enable debugging?   • Visual Studio 2012 not building dependent projects

    I just upgraded a VS2010 project to VS2012 and am now having a problem where dependent projects are not building on demand. For instance, say I have the following projects in my solution: Library A ConsoleApp 1 Where ConsoleApp 1 references Library A. If I change the signature of a method in a class in Library A and run ConsoleApp 1, there will be a compiler error due to ConsoleApp 1 not seeing my changes because running ConsoleApp 1 did NOT cause Library A to build. If I manually build Library A, then manually build ConsoleApp 1, it works fine. However, I would expect that running ConsoleApp 1 should cause any dependent projects to be rebuilt before launching. Could I have something configured incorrectly? Or is this a bug in VS2012?
