• How to synchronize SQL Server 2008 database with SQL Server 2005 database?

  I am using VS 2008 Team Suite and SQL Server 2008 in my development environment. I am deploying to a shared-host website with shared-host SQL Server 2005. I want to push changes from my development environment to my production host. I tried using Data | Schema Compare... and it reports to me that it does not support SQL Server 2008. What do people use for this (Besides Red-Gate tools - I use those at my day job, and they rock...this is a volunteer thing for my son's school)? I am looking for something very inexpensive if not free.

• Wireless Connected But No Internet Connection (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening. • Change field access to getter / setter method access

  Hi everyone, is it possible to change external class field accesses in Java to getter / setter calls automatically, and also hide the exposed fields? I'm using Javabeans and I want change notifications when a field property changes (this is important). I've found cglib which can automatically insert the property change call to the PropertyChangeSupport field. I'd like this question to be a discussion of the issues posed and their solutions. I know about Project Lombok, but this appears to modify the source code, and additionally doesn't support field access modification. • How do you interface with a USB to Parallel adapter?

  I'm currently doing a project where I have to interact with a circuit I made through the parallel port of a computer. However, my computer doesn't have a parallel port so I borrowed a Parallel to USB adapter cable. The cable didn't come with any drivers, but it's recognized by the device manager as a "USB Printing Support" controller, under the USB section. It seems that old parallel printers can be plugged in and work properly without any problems. So my question is, if I write a program in Java that tries to interact with a parallel port directly, will it work? And if not, can anyone give me some pointers as to what I need to do to interact with it? Thanks.

• Plugin Framework - can there be too many addin assemblies?

  Hi, The product I'm working on needs to be built in such a way that we have a quote engine driven by a pluggable framework. We are currently thinking of using MAF, so we can leverage separation of the host and addin interfaces for versioning. However, I'm concerned that we'd have lots of assemblies, it's likely that we'd have one for each quote engine addin - of which there could be 100 going forward, we also need to support multiple versions, so there could be lots of assemblies in total. The quote engine also uses WF to drive it, which means each AppDomain for each addin will need a workflow runtime associated with it. This seems quite heavyweight, however we can unload unfrequently used addins. Does this seem like a good design? We've also looked at a single AppDomain solution using an IOC container to load addin types, but I'm concerned that we won't be able to unload any of the assemblies, given their quantity.

  I use TiddlyWiki for work-notes. I already have pretty large wiki, but now I want to add math-support. As far as I understand what is written here, all I would have to do to use ASCIIMathML in my wiki would be including the script ASCIIMathML.js. Doesn't work (no effect at all). Then I found this plugin for TiddlyWiki, but when I import it to my wiki, it gives me an error in one of the regexp strings. When I download that wiki directly, ASCIIMath does not work anymore, even though I have the script in the same directory. Does anyone have a solution available, how I can add ASCIIMath to my existing TiddlyWiki?

  I'm working on an input system, wrapping DirectInput and XInput. Currently XInput devices are enumerated twice, once as XInput and once as DirectInput (since they support both). How can I find out if a given DirectInput device also supports XInput? There is this MSDN page on the topic, but it requires wbemidl.h and wmsstd.h which aren't available in mingw/gcc (and for some reason I want to avoid msvc - probably by habit). I don't think blacklisting device names/guids is a good solution, but is there a better one? Thanks.

Although Linux doesn't use hardware context switches, it is nonetheless forced to set up a TSS for each distinct CPU in the system. I am wondering: Why doesn't Linux use the hardware support for context switch? Isn't the hardware approach much faster than the software approach? • How do I dynamically tell a .NET MVC application which datasource to point to?

  I'm beginning a port of an existing ColdFusion application to .NET MVC and one of the first issues I'm running into is that in ColdFusion we use the fact that you can define multiple datasources and access them in a dynamic way so that a particular user can be pointed at a particular database. To give an example, I might have two databases, Foo and Bar which each have a table called Locations which store locations particular to that database. The databases are guaranteed to have the same tables, so that's not a concern. In ColdFusion, you can easily dynamically point a user towards a particular datasource because it's just a string which is configured via the ColdFusion administrator (or you could programatically modify an XML file). So the question is how to do this in .NET? And specifically, I think I'd really like to use the Entity framework to leverage the ORM support it'll offer to perform operations on the data in the database, but I'm not sure how to do that (hopefully it's possible). Any thoughts?

• Make two servers talk to each other

  I have application written in GWT and hosted on Google AppEngine/Java. In this application user will have an option to upload video/audio/text file to the server. Those files could be big, up to 1gb or so and because GAE/J does not support large file I have to use another server to store those files. This would be easy to implement if there was no cross-domain security feature in browsers. So, what I'm thinking is to make GAE Server talk to my server (Glassfish or any other java servers if needed) to tell url to the file and if possible send status of uploaded file (how many percent was uploaded) so I can show status on clients screen. Here is what I'm thinking to do. When user loads GWT page that is stored on GAE/J he/she will upload file to my server, then my server will send response back to GAE and GAE will send response to the client. If this scenario is possible what would be the best way to implement GAE to Glassfish conversation?

  Hi, I feel a bit stupid asking this question, but I don't know how I can access the ID field of an entry when using ROME to parse an Atom feed. ROME provides it's own meta level of feeds/items, i.e. SyndFeed and SyndEntry. Being an abstraction over RSS and ATOM they only contain elements both formats support. Thus, there is no method to get an ID of an entry. There also exist low level packages for the distinct formats, and the Atom package contains com.sun.syndication.feed.atom.Entry, which provides getId(). However, I don't know how can I convert my SyndEntry into an Entry. I have not found a way to convert it. The (outdated) tutorials show a conversion, but that's only for output though. So how can I easily access the ID field? Thanks in advance.

If there are no object added or all objects have been removed from the list and the blank objList is serialized, parsing the objList using JSON parser in IE, it will occasionally fail to evaluate the objList as a JavaScript object. This causes the Object doesn't support this property or method error when tying to add an object to the objList: objList['idx']=objData; Does anyone know why does IE occasionally fail to evaluate objList:{} to an object and has someone else come across this issue.   I installed VS 2010 RC yesterday, and suddenly, SQL Server CE isn't loading files from a network share. In projects compiled with VS 2008, if I try to open a SQL CE file located on a network share, I get an error that reads like this: Internal error: Cannot open the shared memory region. If I try to create a data connection in VS 2010 to a SQL CE file on a network share, I get this error: SQL Server Compact does not support opening database files on a network share. Can anyone shed any light on what's going on? Thanks.

But are there any other (flexible) options to store these values? Is there a smart way to make them into unique numbers (ordinal() is not safe to use)?   I'm currently working on a project which needs to persist any kind of objects (of which implementation we don't have any control) so these objects could be recovered afterwards. We can't implement a ORM because we can't restrict the users of our library at development time. Our first alternative was to serialize it with the Java default serialization but we had a lot of trouble recovering the objects when the users started to pass different versions of the same object (attributes changed types, names, ...). We have tried with the XMLEncoder class (transforms an object into a XML), but we have found that there is a lack of functionality (doesn't support Enums for example). Finally, we also tried JAXB but this impose our users to annotate their classes. Any good alternative?

  I recently stumbled upon Code Contracts and have started using them in my C# projects. However, I also have a number of projects written in C++/CLI. For C# and VB, Code Contracts offer a handy configuration panel in the project properties dialog. For a C++/CLI project, there is no such panel. From the documentation, I got the impression that adding Code Contracts support to a C++/CLI project should be a simple matter of calling some external tools as part of the build process (namely ccrefgen.exe, cccheck.exe, and ccrewrite.exe). However, the number of command line options and restrictions concerning the call sequence have me somewhat intimidated. Can anybody point me to a simple way to run the Code Contracts tools as an automated part of the build process in Visual Studio?

• Representing Sparse Data in PostgreSQL

  What's the best way to represent a sparse data matrix in PostgreSQL? The two obvious methods I see are: Store data in a single a table with a separate column for every conceivable feature (potentially millions), but with a default value of NULL for unused features. This is conceptually very simple, but I know that with most RDMS implementations, that this is typically very inefficient, since the NULL values ususually takes up some space. However, I read an article (can't find its link unfortunately) that claimed PG doesn't take up data for NULL values, making it better suited for storing sparse data. Create separate "row" and "column" tables, as well as an intermediate table to link them and store the value for the column at that row. I believe this is the more traditional RDMS solution, but there's more complexity and overhead associated with it. I also found PostgreDynamic, which claims to better support sparse data, but I don't want to switch my entire database server to a PG fork just for this feature. Are there any other solutions? Which one should I use?
