  • Can't display at full resolution on an external monitor from my MacBook.

    - by Ramblingwood
I have a 24" Asus V246H and a new MacBook ($999 one). I am trying to display to display to my Asus at 1080p via VGA. So I boot up with the lid closed and the external monitor plugged in. Everything boots up fine, but the resolution is really low. So I go in and change the resolution to be 1920x1080. My monitor then has a blue box on it that says "OUT OF RANGE". Lower resolutions like 1024x768 work, but 1680x1050 doesn't. If I try mirroring my displays, the entire external monitor AND the entire laptop screen is completely garbled. I can make out some colors, but it is completely unusable. I am suspecting that it simply won't work via VGA, but I don't want to buy another adapter, and my PC is using the DVI port. Any solutions?

  • Missing JAXB classes from XMLschema.xsd

    - by XLR
Hi, I'm working on a xml schema resolver and I'm using JAXB with XMLSchema.xsd. I experience problems with JAXB, because I don't get classes for all the top level elements. For example for <xs:element name="maxLength" id="maxLength" type="xs:numFacet"> I do not get a class MaxLength or anything like that. Only NumFacet exists. Anyone else experienced that and could please help me? Cheers, XLR

  • IDE Motherboard to Boot from a SATA 1T Hdd

    - by JavaMan
I want to use my SATA HDD in my very old ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard (made in 2003). I intended to buy a cheap adapter for this. Say something similar to this one: http://www.cooldrives.com/satoidecofor.html But would there be any issue if I want to boot from this SATA drive? My impression is that these kind of adapters convert SATA signal and commands to PATA directly and such a low level conversion should be transparent to the motherboard and BIOS - in case the BIOS doesn't support SATA. And, for my motherboard, it sure doesn't. Does anyone ever used such a kind of adapter to support a boot drive? Any success sorry?

  • HMVC or PAC - how to handle shared abstractions/models?

    - by fig-gnuton
In HMVC/PAC, what's the recommended way to code if two or more triads/agents share a common model/abstraction? Do you instantiate a new instance of that model wherever needed, and propogate a change in one to all the other instances via the controllers? Or do instantiate one model at some common upper level, and inject that instance wherever needed? (Or neither if I'm missing something fundamental about these patterns?)

  • Web History: Early examples of collapsing and expanding content in an essay

    - by jes5199
I vaguely remember that in the early days of the browser, one notion of what hypertext could be used for was a "zoom in" detail for academic essays: if you wanted a brief overview, you'd take the outermost level, and if you wanted to delve, you would click something and more sentences would appear. I know this sounds trivial and now, but in the mid-1990s it was thought-provoking. Has anyone seen any web fossils like this lying around, ideally still live on the web somewhere?

  • Abstract mapping with custom JiBX marshaller

    - by aweigold
I have created a custom JiBX marshaller and verified it works. It works by doing something like the following: <binding xmlns:tns="http://foobar.com/foo" direction="output"> <namespace uri="http://foobar.com/foo" default="elements"/> <mapping class="java.util.HashMap" marshaller="com.foobar.Marshaller1"/> <mapping name="context" class="com.foobar.Context"> <structure field="configuration"/> </mapping> </binding> However I need to create multiple marshallers for different HashMaps. So I tried to reference it with abstract mapping like this: <binding xmlns:tns="http://foobar.com/foo" direction="output"> <namespace uri="http://foobar.com/foo" default="elements"/> <mapping abstract="true" type-name="configuration" class="java.util.HashMap" marshaller="com.foobar.Marshaller1"/> <mapping abstract="true" type-name="overrides" class="java.util.HashMap" marshaller="com.foobar.Marshaller2"/> <mapping name="context" class="com.foobar.Context"> <structure map-as="configuration" field="configuration"/> <structure map-as="overrides" field="overrides"/> </mapping> </binding> However when doing so, when I attempt to build the binding, I receive the following: Error during code generation for file "E:\project\src\main\jibx\foo.jibx" - this may be due to an error in your binding or classpath, or to an error in the JiBX code My guess is that either I'm missing something I need to implement to enable my custom marshaller for abstract mapping, or custom marshallers do not support abstract mapping. I have found the IAbstractMarshaller interface in the JiBX API (http://jibx.sourceforge.net/api/org/jibx/runtime/IAbstractMarshaller.html), however the documentation seems unclear to me on if this is what I need to implement, as well as how it works if so. I have not been able to find an implementation of this interface to work off of as an example. My question is, how do you do abstract mapping with custom marshallers (if it's possible)? If it is done via the IAbstractMarshaller interface, how does it work and/or how should I implement it?

  • How do I use rest-client for ruby to post an image?

    - by Angela
I am trying to find a way to use the Postful API and I need to post an image in the body of the request. I am trying to use rest-client (but am open to other ways): This is how I am trying to use it after looking at the restclient.rb file but I'm still not clear: class ContactPostfulsController < ApplicationController require 'rest_client' RestClient.post 'http://www.postful.com/service/upload', 'the actual image...?', :content_type => 'application/octet-stream' end

  • Feeding the kernels entropy source from other machines and/or increasing its maximum size

    - by David Spillett
We have has a little trouble with a small box that acts as a VPN end-point and mail relay for our network, caused by the available entropy for /dev/random being too low (which causes TLS connection attempts by exim to fail). The machine doesn't do anything else, so the normal feed into the entropy pool (interrupt timings from things like disk access) is not enough. As a quick hack I've set a looping script that reads from /dev/hda at a couple of Mbyte/sec which keeps it topped up. Other than buying a hardware RNG, is there a clean way of piping data for entry from elsewhere, such as a copy of the data our file server uses for its entropy source? I've spotted several tips for using rng-tools to feed it from /dev/urandom on the same machine but that "feels dirty". Also, is it possible to increase the maximum pool size? It currently seems to max out at 3585.

  • Amazon EC2- many micro-instances vs single small/medium instance

    - by shashankaholic
I have a chat application using stack of Openfire, Tomcat6 and MySQL. Currently, i have installed all these servers on single Linux micro-instance(613 MB memory). Even in low user base 10-20 i am encountering CPU overload which is quite obvious here. As, i am new to Amazon EC2 can somebody suggest me how to scale up my architecture according to traffic use? should i use separate micro instances for every app server(openfire,mysql,tomcat6) should i use single small or medium instance for whole server stack. Some factors in context: high reliance on MYSQL high memory usage due to file transfer web-application interacting with other Amazon service like S3,SES

  • UIWebView or Custom UIView

    - by dinoc
I have a dilemma and was wondering if anyone else had this issue. I have a Navigation based app that when you drill down to the last level, that last view has lots and lots of information and details. I am wondering if I should just use a UIWebView to display the details of information or if I should create a custom UIView with all the labels and outlets set in that UIView. Which way is recommended or the preferred way of doing something like this?

  • factory girl - know when an attribute is overridden in factory

    - by carlos
Is there any way to determine if attributes are overridden in a factory and adjust the behavior of the factory based on those overrides? The evaluator passed into the callbacks contains a __override_names__ method. Unfortunately, by the time it is passed to the callback, every attribute configured by the factory is included in the array returned. Moreover, the Evaluator is marked as api private.

  • what is the difference between latitude, longitude and their delat values.

    - by Mas
Hi! I'm new to the MKMapView (iPhone). I want to add several annotations to the map of Copenhagen (Denmark). I have the latitude and longitude values of different locations of the city. But I don't know how to get the longitudeDelta and latitudeDelta of these locations. I'm using the Google Map API's to calculate the latitude and longitude values (By web services) of each location in the city map. I need help on how to calculate delta values Thanks

  • Image Transformation on iPhone, how to?

    - by Horace Ho
Since I cannot pre-render all the images in PNGs and real-time image transformation functions are required, namely: skew perspective (like the transform action found in Photoshop) Which API (CoreAnimation? OpenGL ES?) should I look into? Even better, is there any sample code around? Thanks!

  • Brand new Seagate HDD has high raw read error rate

    - by kpax
I've just purchased a brand new Seagate ST31000524AS 1TB HDD. Manufacture date shows as January 2012 (yes that's as new as new can get), so must be one of the new batches from the post-flood Thailand. Anyway, I downloaded a copy of Active Hard Disk Monitor tool to check the S.M.A.R.T. parameters and I find the parameter Raw Read Error Rate is very low. Should I be worried? Will this rectify over time? This hdd is just 7 hours old; what gives? Edit: I meant high raw read error rate - Title updated accordingly

  • What would you suggest as a high school first language?

    - by ldigas
Edit by OA: After reading some answers I'll just update the question a little. At first I put it a little bluntly, but some of those gave me some good arguments which have to be taken into consideration while making a stand on this one. (these are mostly picked up from comments and answers below). A few things to take into account: to many pupils this is a first programming language - at this stage most of them have trouble grasping a difference between data types, variable passing, ... and whatnot, less alone pointers and similar 'low level stuff' :) they will all have to pass this to get into next grade (well, big majority of them anyway) not all of them have computers at home, not all of them are willing to learn this, less alone interested in - so the concepts have to be taught on a finite time scale in school hours (as well as practice on computers) free literature is a bonus - the teacher will make some scripts and handaways, but still ... I wouldn't like to bear the parents with the burden of buying expensive literature (also, english is not a native language here ... and although they are all learning it, their ability to read it fluently is somewhat questionable) somebody gave an argument - "a language which does not get in the way of ideas" - good one accessibility on different platforms in not expecially important at this point - although most of the suggested ones are available on win as well as linux - not many macs in this part of europe (their prices are sky high for anything but specialised usage) I will check what are the licencing issues on ms express editions about using it massively in high schools for purposes like this - if someone has any info about this, please, do not be shy with it :) A friend of mine, informatics teacher - in EU it comes as something as junior cs teacher, in a local high school asked me what I thought about what should be the first language pupils should be taught? It is a technical school (a little more oriented towards mathematics than the gymnasium, but not computer oriented totally). So I'm asking you - what do you think should be the first language pupils are exposed to in highschool? They have been teaching Pascal so far, but she's not sure that's a good course. She thought about switching to C (which I resented; considering not all pupils have interests in programming, to start with, and should be taught something higher level since they are just gripping the idea of a loop and such ... for a start), I suggested python or ruby (preferably py since it handles all paradigms). What is your opinion on this one? I looked, but didn't find a similar question on SO, so if there is one, please just point me towards it. Edit: The assumption is that none of the pupils have been exposed to any programming in junior school. See also: What is the best way to teach young kids some basic programming concepts? • Would NetBSD be a good choice for a web server?

    - by Alexander
I've the choice of crafting a NetBSD image for a Xen VPS host, and was just wanting to play around as I like BSD and wished to use it for my general web hosting. I will be hosting a low-mid traffic website and maybe a few other simple services. Do you think NetBSD would be a sufficient choice, in terms of general performance of multiple system users and fair amount of traffic to Apache compared to what Linux could normally handle? I am concerned if I do start to really like it and keep it, I may be limiting myself if I am to move further with my web host and get more traffic (and maybe a lot of FTP access and user shell accounts) Ken

  • Can anyone recommend a decent tool for optimising images other than photoshop

    - by toomanyairmiles
Can anyone recommend a decent tool for optimising images other than adobe photoshop, the gimp etc? I'm looking to optimise images for the web preferably online and free. Basically I have a client who can't install additional software on their work PC but needs to optimise photographs and other images for their website and is presently uploading 1 or 2 Mb files. On a personal level I'm interested to see what other people are using...

  • How to redirect an application's connection through a Socks5/SSH/HTTPS tunnel? Any recomendations of

    - by Pai Gaudêncio
I need to tunnel the connections (mostly TCP) made by an application through Socks5, SSH or HTTPS. So far, I've found 3 ways to do this: api hooks, winsock lsp and a driver. I'm looking for advice on the best way to handle this, and any recommendations on SDK's that could abstract this task for me (free/open-source preferred, but commercial ones are welcome as long as the price is not high for a one-man-starting-company to afford). ps. I'm using .Net (C# and-or C++/CLI)

  • Can I Do a Foreach on a TimeSpan by Timespan Type?

    - by IPX Ares
I have a requirement that regardless of the start and dates that I need to loop through that timespan and calculate figures at the month level. I cannot seem to figure it out, and maybe it is not possible, but I would like to do something like: FOREACH Month As TimeSpan in ContractRange.Months Do Calculations (Month.Start, Month.End) NEXT Is this possible or do I need to calculate the number of months, and just iterate through the amount of months and calculate the start/end of that month based on my index?

  • Data transfer speed to USB storage connected to wifi router very slow

    - by RonakG
Here is my setup. A Linksys Cisco E3200 wifi router. A MacbookPro running OS X Lion 10.7.4. A Seagate GoFlex 1TB hard drive connected to wifi router via the USB port. When I try to transfer data from my MBP to the HDD, the data transfer rate is very low. I'm getting around 3MB/s write speed. This is very slow compared to the speed I get when HDD is directly connected to the MBP. The HDD is NTFS formatted. And the router provides access to HDD using Samba share. So I connect to the HDD using smb://. What is the limiting factor here affecting the data transfer rate?
