  • Are there any good books on how to design software?

    I've been programming for a while and I think I write clean code. But I do this by hacking away, tinkering and testing things until I feel good about the functionality, and then coming in and refactoring, refactoring, refactoring. I tend to write mostly in PHP, Java, and C. Are there any good books that will help me learn to visualize things better and not code everything as if in an infinite REPL loop? Thanks.

  • Why doesn't Ubuntu detect my second hard drive?

    I am new to Linux and to Ubuntu, I was wondering, I have two hard drives setup in SATA ports (non-raid, at least I don't think they are). I installed ubuntu unto the drives fresh without any previous versions or windows at all. However when I got the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS working, all I see is 1 x 120 gigabyte harddrive. Also, not sure if this is important or not, my hard drives are SSD.     I made something, so after clicking a button, some text should appear in the TextView. Part of my code: def on_button1_clicked(self, builer): self.writetest = self.builder.get_object("textview1") self.writetest.insert_at_cursor("something") Unfortunately, when I click the button I get: AttributeError: 'TextView' object has no attribute 'insert_at_cursor' According to GTK Documentation there is such attribute: http://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/GtkTextView.html#GtkTextView-insert-at-cursor I have the same problem with Entry as well, if I change TextView to Entry. But if I use set_text instead of insert_at_cursor in my code, it works.
