  Hi All, I was writing a function for rounding a number to two places. And I found a bug when I was trying to round specific values. So, I ran the code: class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { int limit = 100; for (int number = 0; number <= limit; number++) { Console.WriteLine((System.Math.Round((double)(number+0.995),2,MidpointRounding.AwayFromZero))); } } } And I found that: 8.99 9.99 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 32.99 33.99 34.99 35.99 36.99 37.99 38.99 39.99 numbers are not rounded to their next value.   I have inherited some really old VC6.0 code that I am upgrading to VS2008 for building a 64-bit app. One required feature that was implemented long, long ago is overriding std::cout so its output goes simultaneously to a console window and to a file. The implementation depended on the then-current VC98 library implementation of ostream and, of course, is now irretrievably broken with VS2008. It would be reasonable to accumulate all the output until program termination time and then dump it to a file. I got part of the way home by using freopen(), setvbuf(), and ios::sync_with_stdio(), but to my dismay, the internal library does not treat its buffer as a ring buffer; instead when it flushes to the output device it restarts at the beginning, so every flush wipes out all my accumulated output. Converting to a more standard logging function is not desirable, as there are over 1600 usages of "std::cout << " scattered throughout almost 60 files. I have considered overriding ostream's operator<< function, but I'm not sure if that will cover me, since there are global operator<< functions that can't be overridden. (Or can they?) Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

  Hi, Could some one tell me the difference between GC.GetTotalMemory(false) and GC.GetTotalMemory(true); I have a small program and when i compared the results the first loop gives an put put < loop count 0 Diff = 32 for GC.GetTotalMemory(true); and < loop count 0 Diff = 0 for GC.GetTotalMemory(false); but shouldnt it be the otherway ? • java logging nightmare and log4j not behaving as expected with spring + tomcat6

  I have a spring application that has configured log4j (via xml) and that runs on Tomcat6 that was working fine until we add a bunch of dependencies via Maven. At some point the whole application just started logging part of what it was supposed to be declared into the log4.xml "a small rant here" Why logging has to be that hard in java world? why suddenly an application that was just fine start behaving so weird and why it's so freaking hard to debug? I've been reading and trying to solve this issue for days but so far no luck, hopefully some expert here can give me some insights on this I've added log4j debug option to check whether log4j is taking reading the config file and its values and this is what part of it shows log4j: Level value for org.springframework.web is [debug]. log4j: org.springframework.web level set to DEBUG log4j: Retreiving an instance of org.apache.log4j.Logger. log4j: Setting [org.compass] additivity to [true]. log4j: Level value for org.compass is [debug]. log4j: org.compass level set to DEBUG As you can see debug is enabled for compass and spring.web but it only shows "INFO" level for both packages. My log4j config file has nothing out of extraordinary just a plain ConsoleAppender <log4j:configuration xmlns:log4j="http://jakarta.apache.org/log4j/"> <!-- Appenders --> <appender name="console" class="org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender"> <param name="Target" value="System.out" /> <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%-5p: %c - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> What's the trick to make this work? What it's my misunderstanding here? Can someone point me in the right direction and explain how can I make this logging mess more bullet proof?

• Core Data, Bindings, value transformers : crash when saving

  Hi, I am trying to store a PNG image in a core data store backed by an sqlite database. Since I intend to use this database on an iPhone I can't store NSImage objects directly. I wanted to use bindings and an NSValueTransformer subclass to handle the transcoding from the NSImage (obtained by an Image well on my GUI) to an NSData containing the PNG binary representation of the image. In Interface Builder a table column and an image well are both bound to this property and both have the proper value transformer name (an image dropped in the image well shows up in the table column). The transformer is registered and called every time an image is added or a row is reloaded (checked with NSLog() calls). The problem arises when I am trying to save the managed objects. The console output shows the error message : [NSImage length]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1004933a0 It seems like core data is using the value transformer to obtain the NSImage back from the NSData and then tries to save the NSImage instead of the NSData. There are probably workarounds such as the one presented in this post but I would really like to understand why my approach is flawn. Thanks in advance for your ideas and explanations.

• System.out.println() does not operate in Akka actor

  I am kind of baffled by this encointer. I am working an akka project that was created as a maven projecct and imported into eclipse using the mvn eclipse:eclipse command. the akka actor has the system println method just to make it easy to do read the functions and methods invoked. • Need advice on comparing the performance of 2 equivalent linq to sql queries

  I am working on tool to optimize linq to sql queries. Basically it intercepts the linq execution pipeline and makes some optimizations like for example removing a redundant join from a query. Of course, there is an overhead in the execution time before the query gets executed in the dbms, but then, the query should be processed faster. I don't want to use a sql profiler because I know that the generated query will be perform better in the dbms than the original one, I am looking for a correct way of measuring the global time between the creation of the query in linq and the end of its execution. Currently, I am using the Stopwatch class and my code looks something like this: var sw = new Stopwatch(); sw.Start(); const int amount = 100; for (var i = 0; i < amount; i++) { ExecuteNonOptimizedQuery(); } sw.Stop(); Console.Writeline("Executing the query {2} times took: {0}ms. On average, each query took: {1}ms", sw.ElapsedMilliseconds, sw.ElapsedMilliseconds / amount, amount); Basically the ExecutenNonOptimizedQuery() method creates a new DataContext, creates a query and then iterates over the results. I did this for both versions of the query, the normal one and the optimized one. I took the idea from this post from Frans Bouma. Is there any other approach/considerations I should take? • google maps not working anymore at the drop of a hat

  2 days ago, I was working on a project that involves google maps. The website showed the maps on the pages just fine. Now, I come back to my workstation, nothing has changed, expect for the fact that the google maps won't show up anymore. The code is identical, nobody has touched my machine since I was gone, I've checked the html, everything is perfect and still this isn't working... The Javascript console is giving no errors and the code is identical to a backup I make everytime I call it a day. 2 days ago it was working, today it isn't. I've even copied the source code, put it into an html file and tried that, but the same result. I'm at a loss here. • Help making userscript work in chrome

  I've written a userscript for Gmail Pimp.my.Gmail & i'd like it to be compatible with Google Chrome too. Now i have tried a couple of things, to the best of my Javascript knowledge (which is very weak) & have been successful up-to a certain extent, though im not sure if it's the right way. Here's what i tried, to make it work in Chrome: The very first thing i found is that contentWindow.document doesn't work in chrome, so i tried contentDocument, which works. BUT i noticed one thing, checking the console messages in Firefox and Chrome, i saw that the script gets executed multiple times in Firefox whereas in Chrome it just executes once! So i had to abandon the window.addEventListener('load', init, false); line and replace it with window.setTimeout(init, 5000); and i'm not sure if this is a good idea. The other thing i tried is keeping the window.addEventListener('load', init, false); line and using window.setTimeout(init, 1000); inside init() in case the canvasframe is not found. So please do lemme know what would be the best way to make this script cross-browser compatible. Oh and im all ears for making this script better/efficient code wise (which is sure there is)

  I'm trying to get all the input elements from a certain form from jQuery by providing only the name of the form and only knowing that those wanted fields are input elements. Let's say: <form action='#' id='formId'> <input id='name' /> <input id='surname'/> </form> How do I access them individually with jQuery? I tried something like $('#formId > input') with no success, in fact an error came back on the console "XML filter is applied to non-XML value (function (a, b) {return new (c.fn.init)(a, b);})" Maybe I have to do it with .children or something like that? I'm pretty new at jQuery and I'm not really liking the Docs. It was much friendlier in Mootools, or maybe I just need to get used to it. Oh and last but not least, I've seen it asked before but no final answer, can I create a new dom element with jQuery and work with it before inserting it (if I ever do) into de code? In mootools, we had something like var myEl = new Element(element[, properties]); and you could then refer to it in further expressions, but I fail to understand how to do that on jQuery Thanks in advance.

• MS Query Analizer/Management Studio replacement?

  I've been using SQL Server since version 6.5 and I've always been a bit amazed at the fact that the tools seem to be targeted to DBAs rather than developers. I liked the simplicity and speed of the Query Analizer for example, but hated the built-in editor, which was really no better than a syntax coloring-capable Notepad. Now that we have Management Studio the management part seems a bit better but from a developer standpoint the tools is even worse. Visual Studio's excellent text editor... without a way to customize keyboard bindings!? Don't get me started on how unusable is the tree-based management hierarchy. Why can't I re-root the tree on a list of stored procs for example the way the Enterprise Manager used to allow? Now I have a treeview that needs to be scrolled horizontally, which makes it eminently useless. The SQL server support in Visual Studio is fantastic for working with stored procedures and functions, but it's terrible as a general ad hoc data query tool. I've tried various tools over the years but invariably they seem to focus on the management side and shortchange the developer in me. I just want something with basic admin capabilities, good keyboard support and requisite DDL functionality (ideally something like the Query Analyzer). At this point I'm seriously thinking of using vim+sqlcmd and a console... I'm that desperate :) Those of you who work day in and day out with SQL Server and Visual Studio... do you find the tools to be adequate? Have you ever wished they were better and if you have found something better, could you share please? Thanks!

  I'm experimenting with PHP's session_set_save_handler and I'd like to use a PDO connection to store session data. So I am calling it as follows: dojo.require("customModules.singleChart"); . . . customModules.singleChart.showDailyChart(data); I can see that /customModules/singleChart.js is loaded in the Firebug console as well as Net Tab. However there is no customModules.singleChart object. Strangely enough there is no error either. I have tested this in Firebug, as well as Google Chrome's developer tools. What is the correct way to call an AMD Module using dojo.require? Or is there a better way to do what I need?
