Somehow, this website: http://www.pixiesoft.com/flip/ Can do it, and I would like to know how I might be able to do it myself (with whatever programming language or software) Just saving the file as UTF8 won't do it. My motivation for this question is that I have a friend's exported XML file with the garbled text which I want to turn into corrected Hebrew text file. The XML export was originally garbled by MySQL import and exports, but I don't have the information needed to fix it or traceback the problem. Thanks.

Pleas not another answer "use existing xml parser". Question is - are the regexes proper or not? This is specific situation - C language in embedded system and xml is not well-formed (cannot be fixed - does not depend on me). Xml have specified schema and no problem with namespaces etc. exists.

• Preloading images in HTML, is there a more modern way?

  I have an image loaded by JS on a mouse event. It's a fairly big image so I want to make sure it gets pre-loaded. I reemmber some old techniques from years ago and found this example: <SCRIPT LANGUAGE = JAVASCRIPT> if (document.images) { img1 = new Image(); img2 = new Image(); img1.src = "imageName1.gif"; img2.src = "imageName2.gif" } </SCRIPT> I wondered if this is still good/relevant, or maybe browsers automatically detect unused images and preload them anyway? Note my page has to support IE6, so I might still need older techniques anyway, but I'm still interested if more modern browsers have a better way?

• SWIG: Throwing exceptions from Python to C++

  We've got an interface we've defined in C++ (abstract class, all functions pure virtual) which will be extended in Python. To overcome the cross-language polymorphism issues we're planning on using SWIG directors. I've read how to catch exceptions thrown from C++ code in our Python code here, here, here, and even on SO. It's fairly straight forward and I'm not expecting issues with handling our library's own exceptions. What I'd like to know and can't seem to find in the documentation is how to have our Python implementation of the extended C++ interface throw those C++ exceptions in a way that makes them visible to the C++ code. We could make small functions within the *.i files such that each function throws our exceptions: void throw_myException(){ throw MyException; } but I'm wondering how it will interact with the Python code. Anyone have any experience with throwing C++ exceptions from Python code?

To keep long story short, when asking this question I'm asking it as a developer who's coming from Flash world - great graphics/sounds/media support, fully cross-platform, ability to combine several SWFs within a "movie" (which also implies code reusability). A Flash developer have pretty much freedom. What are most important things that i must know in order to jump into silverlight development? I have solved many Project Euler problems, but the Pandigital problems always exceed the one minute rule.   In this commit there is a change I cannot explain deferred.done.apply( deferred, arguments ).fail.apply( deferred, arguments ); becomes deferred.done( arguments ).fail( arguments ); AFAIK, when you invoke a function as a member of some object like obj.func(), inside the function this is bound to obj, so there would be no use invoking a function through apply() just to bound this to obj. Instead, according to the comments, this was required because of some preceding $.Callbacks.add implementation. My doubt is not about jQuery, but about the Javascript language itself: when you invoke a function like obj.func(), how can it be that inside func() the this keyword is not bound to obj?

• Detect at runtime which country's App Store my iPhone app was downloaded from?

  I have a feature in my iPhone application that, for business reasons, should only be shown/available to customers in the US. If I want to release this app to App Stores outside the US, what's the best way to figure out which country I'm in without relying on user-defined settings such as language and locale? In my mind, the ideal solution is that there's some runtime property that can tell me which App Store country the app was downloaded from, and I can take action accordingly. Looking through the docs and searching the web, I'm not coming up with anything in this department. I don't expect the solution to be 100% foolproof as far as users not being in the country they say they're from, but as close as possible would be nice. I suppose one solution would be to make a separate build for a new product on the App Store and have two versions, one for the US and one for the others, but that doesn't seem ideal. I'm hoping it can be the same product on the App Store to prevent things like fragmentation of user reviews. Thanks in advance!

• Would like help with LOGON Trigger

  I've created a logon trigger in MS SQL that needs to check dm_exec_sessions for a login. This login is the user listed in the connection string and has owner right to the database. If the login is verified, I need it to update a specific table and send an email. So far I've done just the following piece and it disabled my web site. The error I get is: "Logon failed for login 'dev' due to trigger execution. Changed database context to 'mydatabase'. Changed language setting to us_english." Any idea what I did wrong? • Determine phone number based on time zone?

  I have a (potentially international) phone number. It may or may not have a country code prefix. Does anyone know of a database that will help me map phone number = time zone? I would even just like to map phone number = country, since I can probably create country = time zone by scraping existing data on the web. This is a more complicated problem than it looks; for example, how do I know if it's a US-based number -- e.g. is it a USA area code, or an international country calling code? Any language is fine; I can port it.

• drupal + i18n - how to send the currently selected locale to javascript?

  I've got a multi-lingual Drupal 6 installation. The multi-language is provided by the i18n module. I'm displaying some date pickers using jquery ui's datepicker. I'd like to localize those datepickers too (so when the page being shown is English, they show 'mon tue wed ...' but when the page is in Spanish they show 'lun mar mi ...'). My problem is: I don't know how to send the currently selected locale to javascript. The closest thing I could find was the javascript Drupal.locale object. However that object doesn't seem to have a 'locale name'.

  I'm trying to read a multi-line tab-separated file in bash. The format is such that empty fields are expected. Unfortunately, the shell is collapsing together field separators which are next to each other, as so: # IFS=$'\t' # read one two three <<<$'one\t\tthree' # printf '<%s> ' "$one" "$two" "$three"; printf '\n' <one> <three> <> ...as opposed to the desired output of <one> <> <three>. Can this be resolved without resorting to a separate language (such as awk)?

  The docs say: you should implement methods of the form validate:error:, as defined by the NSKeyValueCoding protocol so lets say I have an attribute which is an int: friendAge I want to make sure that any friend may not be younger than 30. So how would I make that validation method? -validateFriendAge:error: What am I gonna do in there, exactly? And what shall I do with that NSError I get passed? I think it has an dictionary where I can return a humanly readable string in an arbitrary language (i.e. the one that's used currently), so I can output a reasonable error like: "Friend is not old enough"... how to do that?

  I'm creating some pagination for my website, and want to use an input-element to navigate between pages. Like the following example: The input would require the "return" key to be hit for the script to trigger. If the value entered is not within range and alert would trigger. e.g. If there was 32 pages, "Please enter a value between 1 and 32" Can this be done using jQuery or javascript, by detecting the value change within the range of pages and redirecting to that page?   Given a source color of any hue by the system or user, I'd like a simple algorithm I can use to work out a lighter or darker variants of the selected color. Similar to effects used on Windows Live Messenger for styling the user interface. Language is C# with .net 3.5. Responding to comment: Color format is (Alpha)RGB. With values as bytes or floats. Marking answer: For the context of my use (a few simple UI effects), the answer I'm marking as accepted is actually the most simple for this context. What i did wrong? Please help me anyone. Is anything i missed?

  The language shortcut public string Code { get; set; } saves a bit of typing when defining trivial properties in C#. However, I find myself writing highly repetitive, not-quite-as-trivial property code that still follows a clear pattern e.g. public string Code { get { return code; } set { if (code != value) { code = value; NotifyPropertyChanged("Code"); } } } I can certainly define a Visual Studio snippet to reduce typing. However, if I need to add something to my pattern, I have to go back and change quite a bit of existing code. Is there a more elegant approach? Is a snippet the best way to go?

• How to dynamically load and switch the resource file in the web app (ASP.NET) without recompiling ?

  I would like to store the resource files (containing texts for labels etc.) for my web application in the database to be able to edit and create them dynamically later (probably in the UI). My idea was to store the whole resx file in an xml column and simply load it on demand - depending on the language and some other attributes of the current user when he is logging into the application or switching the context. The important thing is that the resources do not only depend on the culture info of the user but also on some context information that can be switched by user without logging off and on again (in our case called "group", not having anything to do with a group of users). Is it possible somehow to load the contents of the resources from an external source and simply switch them without web application being recompiled by the server ? I know that there are some interfaces on which I could hook up and implement a custom resources provider which reads from the database directly but if it could work somehow with the resx files it would probably make things a lot easier..
