  • What stage of normalization is this? (moving repeating data into separate table)

    - by Sergio
    Hi There, I have noticed that when designing a database I tend to shift any repeating sets of data into a separate table. For example, say I had a table of people, with each person living in a state. I would then move these repeating states into a separate table and reference them with foreign keys. However, what if I was not storing any more data about states. I would then have a table with StateID and State in. Is this action correct? State is dependant on the primary key of the users table, so does shifting it into its own table help with anything? Thanks,

  • How would I use HTMLAgilityPack to extract the value I want

  • In C# should I use uint or int for values that are never supposed to be negative?

    - by Hamish Grubijan
    Suppose that the MaxValue of (roughly :) ) 2^31 vs 2^32 does not matter. On one hand, using uint seems nice because it is self-explanatory, it indicates (and promises?) that some value may never be negative. However, int is more common, and a cast is often inconvenient. One can just use int and always supplement it with code contracts (everyone has moved to .Net 4.0 by now, right?) Standard libraries do use int for Length and Size properties, even though those should never be negative. So, is it obvious to you that int is better than uint most of the time, or is it more complicated? Please ask questions if you find that this question is not clearly stated. Thanks.

  • Why can't set cast an object from Excel interop?

    - by AngryHacker
    Trying to get a reference to the worksheets (using Excel interop): Excel.Application xl = new Excel.ApplicationClass(); Excel.Workbooks xlWorkBooks = xl.Workbooks; Excel.Workbook xlWorkBook = xlWorkBooks.Open(fileName, 0, false, 5, "", "", true, Excel.XlPlatform.xlWindows, "\t", false, false, 0, true, 1, 0); Excel.Worksheets xlWorkSheets = (Excel.Worksheets) xlWorkBook.Worksheets; // crashes The error is that it cannot cast it: Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to interface type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheets'. • What is the purpose of return'ing $this when setting vars in the model

    - by TaMeR
    I am a self thought hobby programmer and therefore don't have the fundamentals always down the way you professionals do. So please excuse me if this is basic. What is the purpose or benefit of return'ing $this when setting vars in the model. I have seen this done in other places too but cant figure this out. Sample code: public function setAlias($Alias){ $this->_Alias = (string) $Alias; return $this; } public function getAlias(){ return $this->_Alias; }

  • Redmine connecting to SVN through SSL

    - by Pekka
    I am having trouble connecting Redmine to a locally hosted subversion repository using SSL. I suspect it's the self-signed certificate that usually triggers a warning in the SVN client and browser. When I try to connect to the local repo through SSL in Redmine, I get a red "Revision not available" error. When I try connecting through svn://, the connection times out, and I have to restart the web server. Connecting without SSL works without problems. It would be nice to run subversion on SSL to make it safely accessible from the outside as well. I could run the repository through plain HTTP but would like SSL for outside communication. As far as I understand, subversion can't be run both ways at the same time. Does anybody know what to do in such a situation? Is there a configuration setting to ignore invalid certificates somewhere?

  • Whats wrong with this task queue setup?

    - by Peter Farmer
    I've setup this task queue implementation on a site I host for a customer, it has a cron job which runs each morning at 2am "/admin/tasks/queue", this queues up emails to be sent out, "/admin/tasks/email", and uses cursors so as to do the queuing in small chunks. For some reason last night /admin/tasks/queue kept getting run by this code and so sent out my whole quota of emails :/. Have I done something wrong with this code? class QueueUpEmail(webapp.RequestHandler): def post(self): subscribers = Subscriber.all() subscribers.filter("verified =", True) last_cursor = memcache.get('daily_email_cursor') if last_cursor: subscribers.with_cursor(last_cursor) subs = subscribers.fetch(10) logging.debug("POST - subs count = %i" % len(subs)) if len(subs) < 10: logging.debug("POST - Less than 10 subscribers in subs") # Subscribers left is less than 10, don't reschedule the task for sub in subs: task = taskqueue.Task(url='/admin/tasks/email', params={'email': sub.emailaddress, 'day': sub.day_no}) task.add("email") memcache.delete('daily_email_cursor') else: logging.debug("POST - Greater than 10 subscibers left in subs - reschedule") # Subscribers is 10 or greater, reschedule for sub in subs: task = taskqueue.Task(url='/admin/tasks/email', params={'email': sub.emailaddress, 'day': sub.day_no}) task.add("email") cursor = subscribers.cursor() memcache.set('daily_email_cursor', cursor) task = taskqueue.Task(url="/admin/tasks/queue", params={}) task.add("queueup")

    How would I achieve something along the lines of this.. var Persistence = new Lawnchair('name'); Object.extend(Lawnchair.prototype, { UserDefaults: { setup: function(callback) { // "save" is a native Lawnchair function that doesnt //work because // "this" does not reference "Lawnchair" // but if I am one level up it does. Say if I defined // a function called UserDefaults_setup() it would work // but UserDefaults.setup does not work. this.save({key: 'key', value: 'value'}); // What is this functions scope? // How do I access Lawnchairs "this" } }, Schedule: { refresh: function(callback) { } } }); //this get called but doesnt work. I have been trying to get a simple spider to run with scrapy, but keep getting the error: Could not find spider for domain:stackexchange.com when I run the code with the expression scrapy-ctl.py crawl stackexchange.com. The spider is as follow: from scrapy.spider import BaseSpider from __future__ import absolute_import class StackExchangeSpider(BaseSpider): domain_name = "stackexchange.com" start_urls = [ "http://www.stackexchange.com/", ] def parse(self, response): filename = response.url.split("/")[-2] open(filename, 'wb').write(response.body) SPIDER = StackExchangeSpider()` Another person posted almost the exact same problem months ago but did not say how they fixed it, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1806990/scrapy-spider-is-not-working I have been following the turtorial exactly at http://doc.scrapy.org/intro/tutorial.html, and cannot figure out why it is not working.

  • Mathematica Plot3D does not produce a plot when graphing a user-defined function?

    - by pythonscript
    I'm writing a simple Mathematica implementation of the black-scholes model and using Plot3D to plot the pricing surface. However, when I run this code, no plot is produced. My call and put functions to produce correct values when run separately, but no plot is produced. Code: Clear[d1, d2, call, put, stockPrice, strikePrice, riskFreeRate, timeToExp, volatility] d1[stockPrice_, strikePrice_, riskFreeRate_, timeToExp_, volatility_] := (Log[stockPrice / strikePrice] + (riskFreeRate + 0.5*volatility^2)*timeToExp) / (volatility * Sqrt[timeToExp]) d2[stockPrice_, strikePrice_, riskFreeRate_, timeToExp_, volatility_] := d1[stockPrice, strikePrice, riskFreeRate, timeToExp, volatility] - volatility*Sqrt[timeToExp] call[stockPrice_, strikePrice_, riskFreeRate_, timeToExp_, volatility_] := stockPrice * CDF[NormalDistribution[0, 1], d1[stockPrice, strikePrice, riskFreeRate, timeToExp, volatility]] - strikePrice * Exp[-riskFreeRate*timeToExp] *CDF[NormalDistribution[0, 1], d2[stockPrice, strikePrice, riskFreeRate, timeToExp, volatility]] Plot3D[call[stockPrice, 500, 0.0030, timeToExp, 0.39], {stockPrice, 10, 1000}, {timetoExp, 0.0833333, 5}] Other plots, like this sample from the reference, do work. Plot3D[{x^2 + y^2, -x^2 - y^2}, {x, -2, 2}, {y, -2, 2}, RegionFunction -> Function[{x, y, z}, x^2 + y^2 <= 4], BoxRatios -> Automatic]

  • what pattern to use for multi-argument method?

    - by Omid S
    I have a method with the following signature: foo (Sample sample, Aliquot aliquot) "foo" needs to alter a Sample object, either the first argument or from the second argument it can extract its Sample. For example: foo (Sample sample, Aliquot aliquot) { Sample out = null; if (sample != null) out = sample else out = aliquot.getSample() return out; } But that is so un-elegant, other than reading the API a developer does not know the reference of the first argument overrides the Sample of the second argument. Now, I could change "foo" to foo (SomeMagicalObject bar) where SomeMagicalObject is a tuple for Sample and Aliquot and holds some logic ... etc. But I am wondering, are there some patterns for this question?

  • Checking if a touch is withing a UIButton's bounds.

    - by Joshua
    I am trying to make an if statement which will check whether the users touch is within a UIButton's bounds. I thought this would be an easy affair as UIButton is a subclass of UIView, however my code doesn't seem to work. This is the code I have been using. - (void)touchesMoved:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { NSArray *array = [touches allObjects]; UITouch *specificTouch = [array objectAtIndex:0]; currentTouch = [specificTouch locationInView:self.view]; if (CGRectContainsPoint(but.bounds, currentTouch)) { //Do something is in bounds. } //Else do nothing. }

  • View a git diff-tree in a reasonable format

    - by Josh
    Howdy, I'm about to do a git svn dcommit to our svn repo -- and as is recommended in a number of places, I wanted to figure out exactly what I was going to be committing with a dry run. As such I ran: git svn dcommit -n This produced output: Committing to http://somerepo/svn/branches/somebranch diff-tree 1b937dacb302908602caedf1798171fb1b7afc81~1 1b937dacb302908602caedf1798171fb1b7afc81 How do I view this in a format that I can consume as a human? A list of modified files comes to mind. This is probably easy, but running git diff-tree on those hashes gives me a reference to a directory and a some other hashes, as well as some numbers. Not quite sure what to make of it. Thanks very much, Josh

  • Presentmodalviewcontroller method problem with retain count

    - by Infinity
    Hello guys! I am trying to present a modal view controller. I have read the documentation, but something is strange. Here's my code: NSLog(@"rc: %d", [modalViewController retainCount]); UINavigationController *navigationController = [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:modalViewController]; [self presentModalViewController:navigationController animated:YES]; [navigationController release]; NSLog(@"rc: %d", [modalViewController retainCount]); And on the console, appears: rc: 2 rc: 24 And I think 24 is very strange... What do you thin? Why is this happening?

  • What is the maximum distance from an anchor point to a bezier curve?

    - by drawnonward
    Given a cubic bezier curve P0,P1,P2,P3 with the following properties: • Both P1 and P2 are on the same side of the line formed by P0 and P3. • P2 can be projected onto the line segment formed by P0 and P3 but P1 cannot. What is the T value for the point on the curve farthest from P3? Here is an image with an example curve. The curve bulges on the left, so there is a point on the curve farther from P3 than P0. I found this reference for finding the minimum distance from an arbitrary point to a curve. Is trial and error the only way to solve for maximum distance as well? Does it make any difference that the point is an anchor on the curve? Thanks

  • Removing views from UIScrollView

    - by mohan
    I have two UIScrollViews that I move images between. The user can drag and forth between the scroll views. I am trying to animate the movement of the image from one scroll view to another. In -touchesMoved (handled in my UIViewController which has two custom UIScrollViews that intercept touch and sends to my UIViewController), I am trying to set the "center" of my UIImageView that is being moved. As it is moved, the image gets hidden behind the UIScrollView and not visible. How do I make it appear on top of the UIScrollView? I am able to handle the -touchesEnded properly by animating in the destination scroll view. I am also confused about -convertPoint:fromView: usage in the iPhone Programming Guide (See Chapter 3, Event Handling). If the touch coordinates are in window coordinates, to change my view (UIImageView inside a UIScrollView which is inside a UIView and inside a window) center don't I have to use -convertPoint:toView:, i.e., imageView.center = [self.view.window convertPoint:currentTouchPosition toView:imageView]; What am I missing?

  • Chipmunk warning still present with --release

    - by Kaliber64
    I'm using Python27 on Windows 7 64-bit. I downloaded the source for Chipmunk 6.2.x and compiled Pymunk with --release and -c ming32. Almost zero problems. Lots of path not found cause I'm bad. All prints seem to have disappeared but I get spammed with EPA iteration warnings. I've seen a couple discussions but no solutions. Possible chipmunk betas to fix the float errors causing the double truths causing the warning. I picked the latest stable version I think. My program is seriously bogged down with all the prints. class NullDevice(): def write(self, s): pass sys.stdout=NullDevice() Does not disable the C prints .< Any help?

  • Does the order of readonly variable declarations guarantee the order in which the values are set?

    - by Jason Down
    Say I were to have a few readonly variables for filepaths, would I be able to guarantee the order in which the values are assigned based on the order of declaration? e.g. readonly string basepath = @"my\base\directory\location"; readonly string subpath1 = basepath + @"\abc\def"; readonly string subpath2 = basepath + @"\ghi\klm"; Is this a safe approach or is it possible that basepath may still be the default value for a string at the time subpath1 and subpath2 make a reference to the string? I realize I could probably guarantee the order by assigning the values in a constructor instead of at the time of declaration. However, I believe this approach wouldn't be possible if I needed to declare the variables inside of a static class (e.g. Program.cs for a console application, which has a static void Main() procedure instead of a constructor).

  • Custom Build Step Paths Between x86 and x64 in Visual Studio

    - by Bob Somers
    For reference, I'm using Visual Studio 2010. I have a custom build step defined as follows: if exist "$(TargetDir)"server.dll copy "$(TargetDir)"server.dll "c:\program files (x86)\myapp\server.dll" This works great on my desktop, which is running 64-bit Windows. However, when I build on my laptop, c:\Program Files (x86)\ doesn't exist because it's running 32-bit Windows. I'd like to put in something that will work between both editions of Windows, since the project files are under version control and it's a real pain to change the paths every time I work on my laptop. If this were a *nix environment I'd just create a symlink and be done with it. Any ideas?

  • Cinema4D XML scene not rendering texture

    - by George Profenza
    I was playing with the Cinema 4D command line options and ran into a problem that might not be specific to the command line options. I saved a basic scene(a textured cube) in two formats: the original .c4d(binary) format and .xml(Cinema 4D XML via File Export). the .c4d file renders with the texture applied, while the .xml file renders without the texture applied. I had a look at the xml file, and there is a node that holds a reference to the image used as texture, and there is another node which seems to store the pixels in xml. When I opened the .xml document in Cinema 4D, the document did store the material with the texture, but it was not applied to the object. Am I missing something when I export to XML ? How can I export a Cinema 4D XML that can render with the texture applied ?

  • Where should Nhibernate IPostInsertEventListener go in the 3 tier architecture

    - by Quintin Par
    I have a IPostInsertEventListener implementation like public class NHibernateEventListener : IPostInsertEventListener, IPostUpdateEventListener which catches some entity inserts and does an additional insert to another table for ETL. Essentially it requires references to the Nhibernate, Domain entity and Repository<> Now where do I go about adding this class? If I add it to ApplicationServices I’ll end up referencing Nhibernate at that layer. If I add this to the Data layer, I’ll have to reference Domain (circular). How do I go implementing this class with S#arp principles? Any thoughts?

  • Active C++ project to contribute to

    - by Joseph Pond
    I am a self-taught c++/java programmer (I will be starting uni in August though!). I have worked on one project in which I was part of an active team. I really felt I learnt the most and gained a lot of experience while working with the team. Unfortunately it was a small closed source project which has recently taken a slumber. I'm looking for some active open source c++ projects which I could contribute to (preferably that are mainly developed on the linux platform). The other project I worked on was a video game, however, I would like to contribute to a project which has a functional purpose (other than to amuse). Any suggestions on possible projects?
