  • Grammatically correct double-noun identifiers, plural versions

    - by Michal Czardybon
Consider compounds of two nouns, which in natural English would most often appear in the form "noun of noun", e.g. "direction of light", "output of a filter". When programming we usually write "LightDirection" and "FilterOutput". Now, I have a problem with plural nouns. There are two cases: 1) singular of plural e.g. "union of (two) sets", "intersection of (two) segments" Which is correct, SetUnion and SegmentIntersection or SetsUnion and SegmentsIntersection? 2) plural of plural There are two subcases: (a) Many elements, each having many related elements, e.g. "outputs of filters" (b) Many elements, each having single related element, e.g. "directions of vectors" Shell I use FilterOutputs and VectorDirections or FiltersOutputs and VectorsDirections? I suspect correct is the first version (FilterOutupts, VectorDirections), but I think it may lead to ambiguities, e.g. FilterOutputs - many outputs of a single filter or many outputs of many filters? LineSegmentProjections - projections of many segments or many projections of a single segment?

  • I know the big picture but can't put it in place

    - by Simbilim
Hi, I'm interested in web development and by that I mean the bigger projects like facebook or twitter. I know the basics of java, css, php and mysql. I know there is a lot more out there. I read about it. But I don't know what the purpose is and how to put in place. Things like: Scribe, thrift, casandra, Unix/Linux, shell/perl/python scripting, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, non-relational NoSQL datastores, JVM, nginx I want to know why they need it, how they use it and what te purpose is. What I need is a book like technical background of facebook for dummies or so. Are there any books or websites that explain this from scratch? Thank you!

  • How can I change the default GECOS fields under Ubuntu?

    - by Arkevius
I was wondering if there was a way to change the default GECOS fields on a user. Now, I don't mean change their name, number, shell, etc. What I mean is change the field-type/name itself. Like, for example, since I never use the "Work-Phone" field, could I say, rename it to something else, like "Address" ? Also, is it possible to add completely new field entries as well? All I could really find through searching is how to change the fields that are already set.

  • FastCGI has to be restarted for new content to be displayed on my Django site

    - by vorpyg
I'm currently testing serving my Django site with Nginx, FastCGI and Flup. The server is configured roughly as described in the Django Advent article. I had to do some minor modifications in order to make it work in Ubuntu 9.10. The problem is that when I add new content it doesn't show up on the page before I restart the FastCGI process. I haven't enabled any caching functionality in Django, and when I query the DB from the Django shell it works as expected. Anybody got ideas to what's causing this?

  • How to create a bash function with variable parameters/arguments to grep several keywords/tags

    - by CornSmith
I'm using the :!grep "tag1" filename | grep "tag2" filename | grep -n "tag3 or more" filename command in vim to search for my code snippets based on their tags (a simple comment at the top of a snippet) in one big file. I use snippets to remember tricky things. This is painful to write out each time. I'd like to make an alias, or function to do something like this: :!greptag tag1 tag2 ... tag39 And it should search the current doc and return the lines with all the tags on them. Vim is set to interactive shell mode so that it can parse my bashrc for aliases/functions. set shellcmdflag=-ic How can I construct a function that allows for variable arguments like this in bash?

  • What is the recommended way to package perl scripts for CPAN (and CorporatePAN)?

    - by szabgab
Recently I looked at a module on CPAN that comes with a script to be installed which made me wonder. What is the recommended way to include a script in a package that should end up on the public CPAN and if there is any different recommendation for packages that would be released on an in-house CPAN server? The script starts like this: #!/usr/bin/perl eval 'exec /usr/bin/perl -S $0 ${1+"$@"}' if 0; # not running under some shell Two questions Do I understand correctly the eval part is unnecessary? That will be embedded by the CPAN client during installation and it will be very different when installing on Windows. What is the recommended sh-bang line? Would that be #!/usr/bin/env perl instead of the above?

  • Custom Extension not showing up wthin experimental instance

    - by user1333524
I have a VSIX extension that I created which shows up in Visual Studio 2010 and works as designed. However I am attempting to build some Visual Studio automation which relies on this Extension and although its present in the project where I am building my automation package, when I run the package project, the visual studio experimental solution loads no problem, however when I look within the Extension Manager I do not see my registered Extension (even though it shows up within my Visual Studio project where I am building my extension. The extension is a custom shell for LightSwitch which may be a clue as to why it is not showing within my experimental instance of Visual Studio, not sure as I see other extensions I built and registered for LightSwitch showing up. Of course my issue is that when I attempt to load a solution that has a dependency on my LightSwitch extension, which otherwise loads fine outside of the Experimental Instance, fails due to the fact it can't locate my custom extension when I try to load the solution within my experimental solution.

  • Perl: Fastest way to get directory (and subdirs) size on unix - using stat() at the moment

    - by ivicas
I am using Perl stat() function to get the size of directory and it's subdirectories. I have a list of about 20 parent directories which have few thousand recursive subdirs and every subdir has few hundred records. Main computing part of script looks like this: sub getDirSize { my $dirSize = 0; my @dirContent = <*>; my $sizeOfFilesInDir = 0; foreach my $dirContent (@dirContent) { if (-f $dirContent) { my $size = (stat($dirContent))[7]; $dirSize += $size; } elsif (-d $dirContent) { $dirSize += getDirSize($dirContent); } } return $dirSize; } The script is executing for more than one hour and I want to make it faster. I was trying with the shell du command, but the output of du (transfered to bytes) is not accurate. And it is also quite time consuming. I am working on HP-UNIX 11i v1.

  • Is there a c++ library that provides functionality to execute an external program and read its outpu

    - by BD at Rivenhill
Basically, I'm looking for something that will allow me to replicate the following Perl code: my $fh = new FileHandle; $fh->open("foo |"); while (<$fh>) { # Do something with this line of data. } This is in the context of Linux, so a library that is specific to Windows will not help. I know how to write a program that does fork/exec/dup2 and all that basic shell-type jazz, but there are some fiddly details involving terminals that I don't feel like messing around with (and I don't have a copy of "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" or a similar reference handy), so I'm hoping that someone has already solved this problem.

  • Is vbscripting that difficult?

    - by eric young
I need to write some vbscripts in my new project. I was told by other people that vbscripting is easy, but seems to me, it is not. For example, in the following example (provided by microsoft), these functions: CreateObject, CreateShortcut, as well as these property names: TargetPath, WindowStyle, Hotkey, etc, are used, but I just cannot find the corresponding API documentation about how to use them. In other words, how do you know you need to call these functions in your vbscripts? Visual Studio 2008/2010 do not have templates for vbscript either. Could anybody tell me what I am missing, and what the best way is to do vbscripting? set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") strDesktop = WshShell.SpecialFolders("Desktop") set oShellLink = WshShell.CreateShortcut(strDesktop _ & "\MyExcel.lnk") oShellLink.TargetPath = _ "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" oShellLink.WindowStyle = 1 oShellLink.Hotkey = "CTRL+SHIFT+F" oShellLink.IconLocation = _ "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE, 0" oShellLink.Description = "My Excel Shortcut" oShellLink.WorkingDirectory = strDesktop oShellLink.Save

  • Basic Python While loop compound conditional evaluation

    - by dbjohn
In Python IDLE Shell it seems I cannot use a compound conditional expression and a while loop. I tried it within brackets too. k=0 m=0 while k<10 & m<10: print k k +=1 m+=1 If I write while k<10: print k k+=1 This does work. Is there a way I could achieve the first block of code with the "and" operator. I have done it in Java. Do I just need to put together "if" statements to achieve the same functionality in Python?

  • Django: Data corrupted after loading? (possible programmer error)

    - by Rosarch
I may be loading data the wrong way. excerpt of data.json: { "pk": "1", "model": "myapp.Course", "fields": { "name": "Introduction to Web Design", "requiredFor": [9], "offeringSchool": 1, "pre_reqs": [], "offeredIn": [1, 5, 9] } }, I run python manage.py loaddata -v2 data: Installed 36 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) Then, I go to check the above object using the Django shell: >>> info = Course.objects.filter(id=1) >>> info.get().pre_reqs.all() [<Course: Intermediate Web Programming>] # WRONG! There should be no pre-reqs >>> from django.core import serializers >>> serializers.serialize("json", info) '[{"pk": 1, "model": "Apollo.course", "fields": {"pre_reqs": [11], "offeredIn": [1, 5, 9], "offeringSchool": 1, "name": "Introduction to Web Design", "requiredFor": [9]}}]' The serialized output of the model is not the same as the input that was given to loaddata. The output has a non-empty pre_req list, whereas the input's pre_reqs field is empty. What am I doing wrong?

  • make Ruby script run once a second

    - by Matt Hintzke
I have a ruby script that needs to run about 1 time a second. What I am doing is using a ruby script to keep track of modifications of files in a directory. I want the script to run once a second so that the modifications are updated in "live" time. Basically, I want my script to do the same kind of thing as running "top" on a unix shell. Where the screen is updated every second or so. Is there an equivalent to setInterval in ruby like there is in javascript? Thanks

  • read in bash on tab-delimited file without empty fields collapsing

    - by Charles Duffy
I'm trying to read a multi-line tab-separated file in bash. The format is such that empty fields are expected. Unfortunately, the shell is collapsing together field separators which are next to each other, as so: # IFS=$'\t' # read one two three <<<$'one\t\tthree' # printf '<%s> ' "$one" "$two" "$three"; printf '\n' <one> <three> <> ...as opposed to the desired output of <one> <> <three>. Can this be resolved without resorting to a separate language (such as awk)?

  • How do I propagate an exception thrown by croak in forked child to parent/foreground process?

    - by Pedro Silva
Throwing an exception via croak in a forked child process seems to print the error as a background process would. That is, it clobbers the shell prompt. If I die instead of croak, the the error message pops up as a foreground process. I've trying to find out why that is in the Carp documentation without any luck. Here's what I mean. The croak version: $ perl Wrapper.pm $ error: ... does not exist at Wrapper.pm line 624 The die version: $ perl Wrapper.pm error: ... does not exist at Wrapper.pm line 515. I tried trapping the fork and printing $@ to STDERR and exiting, but that didn't have an effect. Any ideas? I'd like to be able to use croak in this particular case.

  • Python HTTPSConnection.close() does not appear to close the connection?

    - by Dave
I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I'm just doing something wrong. If I were to do an HTTP connection like this: import httplib http_connection = httplib.HTTPConnection("192.168.192.196") http_connection.request("GET", "/") http_connection.sock.settimeout(20) response = http_connection.getresponse() data = response.read() http_connection.close() Then at a DOS prompt, I do this: netstat -ano | find /i "192.168.192.196:80" | find /i "ESTABLISHED" I get nothing. However, if I do the same thing, but change it to an HTTPSConnection: import httplib http_connection = httplib.HTTPSConnection("192.168.192.196") http_connection.request("GET", "/") http_connection.sock.settimeout(20) response = http_connection.getresponse() data = response.read() http_connection.close() Then do this: netstat -ano | find /i "192.168.192.196:443" | find /i "ESTABLISHED" I will actually see that the connection remains established until I actually ^Z out of the Python shell. This is happening in one of the applications I'm responsible for. Python isn't actually hanging there - it's simply leaving the connection open. Am I doing something wrong here? Do I need extra code to close the HTTPS connection? This is Python 2.6.4, btw.

  • How can I convert spaces to tabs in Vim or Linux?

    - by cwd
I've looked over several questions on Stack Overflow for how to convert spaces to tabs without finding what I need. There seem to be more questions about how to convert tabs to spaces, but I'm trying to do the opposite. In Vim I've tried :retab and :retab! without luck, but I believe those are actually for going from tabs to spaces anyways. I tried both expand and unexpand at the command prompt without any luck. Here is the file in question: http://gdata-python-client.googlecode.com/hg-history/a9ed9edefd61a0ba0e18c43e448472051821003a/samples/docs/docs_v3_example.py How can I convert leading spaces to tabs using either Vim or the shell?

  • Third party lib to create jar files?

    - by Synesso
I've Goog'd but I can't find any third party library that will let you create a jar file programmatically. I amazed that even Apache commons-io doesn't seem to have such functionality. I'd rather not implement it myself as the API is rather low level. Are there any 3rd party libraries out there that will do the job? Edit: I meant programmatically in Java. I don't want to drop out to the shell and I don't want to work with java.io.*.

  • Maximum open sll connections on Windows

    - by scooterman
version: erlang R13B Hi all, how can I increase the amount of ssl ports/handles that my network server is able to create on Windows? On linux I was able to successful create about 1000 connections using: -env ERL_MAX_PORTS 80000 -P 268435456 and changing the maximum open fd's using ulimit. On windows apparently there is no effect using the same configuration, and sadly the number of open connections are VERY small (about 30, and it opens 6 handles for each one). I've noticed that the shell starts two other children processes, inet_gethost.exe and ssl_esock.exe. If these are the ones that I have to increase the port count, how do I do that? Thanks,

  • VBScript Writing to Server Text File

    - by Keyfer Mathewson
I have created a VBScript which pulls the service tag, username, and computer name from a computer. What I need to do now is compile this information in a text document. How it's set up is as follows: We have an Active Directory Server, with a folder for login scripts. I have created a batch file to run this .vbs script, and the script works well so far. What I now need is for a file on the AD server, called "logging.txt", to be populated with the information that is created with the .vbs script. This is the script I have so far: 'Get Dell Service Tag Info set ProSet = GetObject("winmgmts:").InstancesOf("Win32_BIOS") Set ProSet1 = GetObject("winmgmts:").InstancesOf("Win32_SystemEnclosure") For each Pro in ProSet For each Pro1 in ProSet1 ServiceTag=Pro.SerialNumber wscript.echo ServiceTag exit for Next exit for Next 'get username and computername, could also be asked in a batch Set oShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set oShellEnv = oShell.Environment("Process") sComputerName = oShellEnv("ComputerName") sUsername = oShellEnv("username") wscript.echo sComputerName & " " & sUsername Thank you very much in advance!

  • can't make svn store password, even though the configuration allows it

    - by davka
did everything the book says, i.e. removed the authentication files from .subversion/auth, and explicitly set the relevant config parameters to 'yes' even though this is a default, and yet the shell svn commands ask for password each time. The repository is on cvsdude.com, the client is linux. I also use the subclipse plugin that caches the password ok. I vaguely remember that when I started working with it, the command asked interactively if I wanted to save clear password, and I said no. Can this choice be stored somewhere and take precedence over the configuration? Thanks!

  • Server RAID 5 failed...all I have left is my compiled website

    - by David Murdoch
Yesterday, 2 of the 3 drives in my dev server's RAID 5 decided to die on me (with no warning). I've come to grips with the fact that my data is most likely lost unless I shell out some major bucks for professional data-resortoration. People, don't be an idiot like me and treat your RAID as a data backup! Luckily I published the site about 4 hours before my files went bye-bye. Is there any way to run some [magical] program to restore my compiled site to their original files? Also: I develop on one machine with the files stored on the server...is there some visual studio 2010 web cache on my local machine (the one that didn't crash) that I may be able to use?
