• The biggest ADF conference "down under"

  While Oracle Open World is the place to be for ADF presentations, for Aussies living in Perth, San Francisco is a tad far away (believe me from experience, the 23hrs flight from PER-SYD-SFO is tedious).  That's why I'm very excited to see that the Australian Oracle User Group at this year's Perth conference is running its largest set of ADF presentation to date: 5! Okay, it doesn't compare to the 60 ADF sessions at OOW, but it's a small conference of around 300 people that runs for 2 days with 54 sessions total, not 40000 people that runs for 5 days with 1900+ sessions, so I think that's a good effort for a conference that's at the end of the earth! • unity, seeing all instances of same open application windows on all virtual desktop

  I noticed this strange issue with unity. I am using 12.04. The desktop has 4 virtual desktops, which I can switch between using the 'workspace switcher' which is very nice. But I noticed the following: When I have 2 instances of the same app (say 2 different firefox windows, or 2 different terminal windows), in 2 different virtual desktops, then I click on the icon for that application located on the launcher panel (the left long strip with icons on it), then I see the application comes into focus. Then when I click again right away (on the same icon on the launcher), then now all instances of this application that are open come into ONE view (may be on was on desktop 1, and the other was on desktop 3 for example) and then I can now click on the one instance window that I want to select to use. This is all very nice actually. But this does NOT work for all applications! I just tried it, and it worked for firefox, and for gedit and for the gnome terminal. I have one firefox window open in virtual desktop 1, and another window open in virtual desktop 2. I clicked once on the firefox icon, then again, and both windows came into the main desktop and I was able to select which one to use. When I tried the same thing on dolphin file manager, which I also had 2 windows (instances) of it open in 2 different virtual desktops, this behavior did not happen. I clicked again, and nothing happened. Only one remained in focus. So I had to fo look for the second dolphin window the hard way. It looks like some apps are supported by this feature and some are not. How does one make it so that all applications are supported like this? This is a very handy feature. Is it a configuration item somewhere? thanks

• Alternative to Game State System?

  As far as I can tell, most games have some sort of "game state system" which switches between the different game states; these might be things like "Intro", "MainMenu", "CharacterSelect", "Loading", and "Game". On the one hand, it totally makes sense to separate these into a state system. After all, they are disparate and would otherwise need to be in a large switch statement, which is obviously messy; and they certainly are well represented by a state system. But at the same time, I look at the "Game" state and wonder if there's something wrong about this state system approach. Because it's like the elephant in the room; it's HUGE and obvious but nobody questions the game state system approach. It seems silly to me that "Game" is put on the same level as "Main Menu". Yet there isn't a way to break up the "Game" state. Is a game state system the best way to go? Is there some different, better technique to managing, well, the "game state"? Is it okay to have an intro state which draws a movie and listens for enter, and then a loading state which loops on the resource manager, and then the game state which does practically everything? Doesn't this seem sort of unbalanced to you, too? Am I missing something?

• Banco Espírito Santo Increases Sales Campaign Success Rate with Siebel CRM

  Banco Espírito Santo (BES), founded in 1869, is the second-largest private financial institution in Portugal with a 20.3% domestic market share, 2.1 million customers, and more than 700 in-country branches. It also has a strong international presence with operations in 23 countries and four continents.   Alt-Tab looses focus and have to hit Alt-Grave Accent to get focus I have ubuntu 12.4 with Unity window manager. I have a gvim window and a firefox window open. I hit Alt-Tab to switch between the two. Sometimes the gvim window doesn't have focus and I have to hit Alt-GraveAccent (Alt-`) to get the gvim window to have focus (ie: have the cursor a solid white square instead of a outline of a square) I do this to move between firefox where I highlight some text and do a copy, then Alt-Tab to gvim and do a paste. Sometimes the focus isn't in gvim and the paste doesn't work. I then have to do an Alt-graveAccent to get the focus into gvim or click the gvim window. These extra steps slow my process down and it makes it difficult to get into a smooth rythum. I saw this: ALT+TAB loses focus Maybe the Alt-GraveAccent may help someone. It's a unity bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1035628 Your best bet is to wait until an update comes through fixing it.

   Il 27 giugno a Verona si è tenuta la seconda edizione di Fabbrica Futuro dedicata all’area Nord Est d’Italia rivolta a tutti gli attori del mercato manifatturiero che ha voluto mettere a confronto idee, raccontare casi di eccellenza e proporre soluzioni concrete per, come recita il sottotitolo del progetto, l’azienda manifatturiera del domani, e in particolare per le aziende produttrici del Triveneto.All’evento sono intervenute un centinaio di persone, in prevalenza Imprenditori e Manager di linea di aziende appartenenti al settore manifatturiero italiano, con una redemption tra iscritti e presenti di poco inferiore al 50% (48,7%). La dimensione aziendale maggiormente rappresentata dai visitatori presenti è la media azienda produttrice del tessuto manifatturiero italiano.I giudizi espressi dai partecipanti che hanno compilato il questionario di feedback, raccontano di un’esperienza positiva sia in termini organizzativi che di contenuto delle relazioni proposte e del livello dei relatori. La giornata ha visto infatti l’esposizione di 17 interventi, tutti in un’unica sessione plenaria, per un totale di 19 relatori tra accademici, utenti e rappresentanti di aziende del mercato dell’offerta.Altro segnale di forte interesse all’evento è stato il numero di richieste per l’attivazione alla newsletter al sito www.fabbricafuturo.it grazie alla quale si può essere costantemente aggiornati sui nuovi contenuti pubblicati e su tutti i prossimi appuntamenti in calendario. • Problem with installing Flash

  This question has been posted loads of times, I know, but seriously I've spent hours and HOURS searching the web for answers. Anyways, basically I have just installed Ubuntu 13.04 for the first time. I tried to get on youtube and found out I cannot play videos. When I went to install flash the windows popped up saying either install Adobe flash or gnash. installed Flash from the Adobe website. Three different files types to choose from. YUM, .tar.gz or .rpm. Now from what I could gather .tar.gz is the right one so I tried it and it downloaded without the error message. It comes up with the box that says open with archive manager. Extracted the files but none of them were of any use. Could not work out how to install it. There was no file intended for installation. So what am I meant to do with these files? Would it be easier to just install Gnash?

• How to set up a (relatively) secure kiosk on Natty?

  I'm trying to get my application to be the only thing a user sees when the machine is powered on - like a kiosk, but a little more secure. Ideally, what I'd like to happen is this: At machine power-on, the user sees the Ubuntu splash image, then my app. While the app is running, the user can't get back to the desktop or a text login prompt via any keyboard shortcut. This is the (relatively) secure bit. When the user exits the app, the user sees a shutdown image, then the machine powers off. In particular, I'd like to configure things so that the user never sees the Gnome desktop on startup or shutdown. At the moment, I've configured a default user to be logged on automatically, with an autostart item which starts my app, but after the Ubuntu startup screen the user sees the Gnome desktop briefly before my app is started. When the app is exited, the user is taken back to the Gnome desktop and has to shut the machine down manually. Also, because of time constraints, I can't really start over with a different window manager. Is there an easy way to configure all of this?

• Identity Propagation for Web Service - 11g

  I came across this post from Beimond on how to do identity propagation using OWSM.As I have mentioned in the past here, here and here - Beimond has a number of excellent posts on OWSM. However I found one part of his comment puzzling. I quote: "OWSM allows you to pass on the identity of the authenticated user to your OWSM protected web service ( thanks to OPSS ), this username can then be used by your service. This will work on one or between different WebLogic domains. Off course when you don't want to use OWSM you can always use Oracle Access Manager OAM which can do the same." The sentence in red highlights the issue i find puzzling. In fact I just discussed this particular topic recently here. So let me try and clarify on a few points: a) OAM is used for Web SSO. b) OWSM is used for securing Web Services. You cannot do identity propagation using OAM for Web Services. c) You use SAML to do identity propagation across Web Services. OAM also supports SAML - but that is the browser profile of SAML relevant in the context of Web SSO and is not related to the SAML Token Profile defined as part of the WS-Security spec.

• Developing an internet-enabled application as a Kiosk on Windows 7

  I am finalizing development of a desktop Java application that communicates with an outside web server, and now I need to start seriously considering deployment. This application will run on a large touchscreen all-in-one workstation running Windows 7. It will be located in a public-area and thus must be LOCKED-DOWN Hanibal Lecter style. Early in the project nobody really concerned themselves with this fact just assuming that we can buy some magical software for Windows 7 that will automatically take care of all this, however I am finding now that this looks to be a LOT more complicated than my manager ever thought. I need to: - Lock down the standard hot-keys (ALT+TAB, ALT+CTRL+DEL, etc...) Prevent the user from opening ANY programs other than the kiosk application and its spawned executables Prevent the user from closing the application Start the kiosk application on startup (this can be done without kiosk software) Auto-login to Windows on reboot (Windows Updates, power failure, bratty kid pressing the power button, etc...) Administrator passcode escape sequence for routine maintenance by desktop support professionals. To my dismay I am having a really hard time finding software that contains the whole package and am finding numerous swaths of competing information on the best way to do this. I am not necessarily looking for free or open source software and am willing to pay for software that can help me achieve this. Have any of you ever wrote kiosk software before and if so what approaches have you taken to do this?
