Or see what Gregory House (TV show "House M.D.") does when he is thinking. But what about the other places where you are the only programmer? If you don't stare at boring stuff on the monitor for 8 hours straight, co-workers suspect you being a slacker. Yes, not the managers who see the output. Only the co-workers who see the process and can't relate to this kind of work. Yesterday I had to explain to a trainee of some other profession that software development is like flying. The explanation from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I don't think she bought it.

  I have a WCF service application that uses a component called EnvironmentConfiguration that holds configuration information for my application. I am converting this service so that it can be used by different applications that have different configuration requirements. I want to identify the configuration to use by allowing an additional parameter to be passed to the service call i.e. public void DoSomething(string originalParameter, string callingApplication) What is the recommended way to alter the behaviour of the EnvironmentConfiguration class based on the transient data (callingApplication) without having to pass the callingApplication variable to all the component methods that need configuration information?

• C SIGSEGV Handler & Mprotect

  I'm constructing a program which uses mprotect() to restrict a block of memory from accessing. When the memory is requested, a SIGSEGV is thrown which I listen for using a signal() call. Once the SIGSEGV has been detected, I need to somehow access the pointer to the memory that was requested (that threw the fault) and the size of the segment requested. • [Ruby] Why do I have to URI.encode even safe characters for Net::HTTP requests?

  I was trying to send a GET request to Twitter (user ID replaced for privacy reasons) using Net::HTTP: url = URI.parse("http://api.twitter.com/1/friends/ids.json?user_id=12345") resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(url) this throws an exception in Net::HTTP: NoMethodError: undefined method empty?' for #<URI::HTTP:0x59f5c04> from /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:1470:ininitialize' just by coincidence, I stumbled upon a similar code snippet, which used URI.encode prior to URI.parse, so I copied that and tried again: url = URI.parse(URI.encode("http://api.twitter.com/1/friends/ids.json?user_id=12345")) resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(url) now it works fine, but why? There are no reserved characters that need escaping in the URL I mentioned, so why do I have to call URI.encode for get_response to succeed?

• Someone is using the struct name as a variable name too. What does the code really say? (c++)

  This morning we found an old chunk of code that was causing a library call to crash. struct fred { int a; int b; int c; }; fred fred[MAX_SIZE+1]; memset( fred, 0, sizeof(fred) * MAX_SIZE+1 ); It appears that the sizeof(fred) may have been the full array size, rather than the structure size, as it was overwriting a great deal of memory. The fact that it compiled without warning on several different systems seemed odd. Is there a correct semantic for this case where the type and variable name are colliding? or is this some sort of undefined behavior? or just a defect? I haven't been been clever enough to find anything on Google or our language help. Thanks Evil

• Parts of statusbar disappearing with IE BHO

  I have a C# IE BHO in use for an internal company app that is adds a pane to the statusbar with SB_SETPARTS (it mitm's the SETPARTS call and inserts an element into the array) and then draws the controls by moving them from a hidden (in-process) form with SetParent() This technique works well but it causes other parts of the statusbar to appear briefly and then disappear. Affected parts seem to be all of the panes that don't have their own hWnd, eg the "Internet | Protected Mode" and icon, and some of those icons that appear in the six panes immediately to the left. Does anyone know what is causing this? I suspect that either certain messages aren't getting to the statusbar32 control to draw the stuff, or my WindowsForms10 additions are sending out extraneous messages. Everything appears fine for about a second, and then the other parts just disappear.

• Ruby - Subclassing array to make it randomize when flattened

  I'm trying to subclass Array in ruby to make it randomize its elements when flatten! is called. Looking at the source code for Array#flatten (http://ruby-doc.org/core/classes/Array.src/M002218.html), it looks like it should recursively call flatten! on any array contained within an array. So, I tried doing something like this: class RandArray < Array def randomize! self.sort!{rand(3)-1} end def flatten! randomize! super end end However, when a normal array contains my RandArray and flatten is called on the normal array, flatten! is never called in my array. I figure ruby is just calling some other method to flatten the arrays recursively, but I can't figure out what that is. Any tips?

  Hello. I'm trying to use a select object to filter the results of a many to many rowset. This call works great: $articles = $this->model->findArticlesViaArticlesUsers(); This however does not: $articles = new Default_Model_Articles(); $articleSelect = $articles->select(); $articleSelect->where("status = 'published'") ->order("date_published DESC") ->limit(1); $articles = $this->model->findArticlesViaArticlesUsers($articleSelect); That throws the following error: exception 'Zend_Db_Select_Exception' with message 'You cannot define a correlation name 'i' more than once' I can't figure out how to successfully get "articles that have the status of 'published'" using the magic many-to-many relationship (nor findManyToManyRowset). I'm at the end of my rope and thinking of just writing the sql manually. Any ideas?

I found that the vcbuild.exe always call the "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Csc.exe /noconfig .." the problem is how can I change the Framework version to v3.5? I found my project works fine with the v3.5 but it's broken in the v2.0.50727. I try to use msbuild.exe instead of vcbuild.exe, everything goes well, I just don't understand how can I make it with the vcbuild.exe? win7+vs2005+vs2008 installed.

  I recently stumbled upon Code Contracts and have started using them in my C# projects. However, I also have a number of projects written in C++/CLI. For C# and VB, Code Contracts offer a handy configuration panel in the project properties dialog. For a C++/CLI project, there is no such panel. From the documentation, I got the impression that adding Code Contracts support to a C++/CLI project should be a simple matter of calling some external tools as part of the build process (namely ccrefgen.exe, cccheck.exe, and ccrewrite.exe). However, the number of command line options and restrictions concerning the call sequence have me somewhat intimidated. Can anybody point me to a simple way to run the Code Contracts tools as an automated part of the build process in Visual Studio?

  Objective: In support of a Windows Service that may have multiple instances on a single machine, use a Setup Project to create an MSI capable of: Receiving user input for Service Name Installing service Serializing Service Name from 1 (so that the proper name can be used in logging and uninstall) My initial hope was to set Service Name in App.config (and then retrieve it during uninstall upon instantiation of the ServiceInstaller. This seems to have been naive, because it is not accessible during the install. If MyInstaller extends Installer, it can call base.Install(); however, my attempts to write to app.config (within MyInstaller.Install() and after base.Install()) are inneffective. So while the service can be installed with a custom Service Name, that name is not serialized and the installer is most displeased upon uninstall. How should this be done?

• Closest Approach question for math/physics heads

  I'm using a Segment to Segment closest approach method which will output the closest distance between two segments of length. These objects are moving at variable speed each, so even when it succeeds I'm currently using a 10-step method and calculating the distance between 2 spheres as they move along the two segments. So, basically the length of each segment is the object's traverse in the physics step, and the radius is the objects radius. By stepping, I can tell where they collide, and if they collide (Sort of; for the MOST part.).. I get the feeling that there could be something better. While I sort of believe that the first closest approach call is required, I think that the method immediately following it is a TAD weak. Can anyone help me out? I can illustrate this if needed.   Hi, Consider the following piece of code: As you can see we are on line 28. Is there any way to see the return value of the function at this point, without letting the code return to the caller function? Foo.Bar() is a function call which generates a unique path (for example). So it's NOT constant. In VB.NET it's possible by entering the function's name in the Watch, which will then threat it as a variable. But in C# this is not possible, any other tips? PS: rewriting is not an option.

  My MacBook Pro runs slower the longer it's on. I am getting kernel warnings. Some, but not all, resets correlate with AC power connects and disconnects. I don't think the warnings do.   I have to perform some post mortem debugging on a C++ project. Known way to perform is to set the cdb debugger as a minidump generator and to process the dumps collects afterwards. I read nearly the whole web and I didn't find a solution to produce a minidump with the name of the process that has crashed Is there a way to set AeDebug\Debugger registry variable in such a manner that cdb generates a dump file with the name of the process ? When I encapsulate the call to cdb.exe in a batch file, it starts well but stays blocked on the symbol searching. I must perform a Ctrl+C in order to stop the batch, then the minidump, with the correct process name, is created... but of course I can't set up such a thing in an unattended production environment... Has anybody done that before ?

• What is the purpose of Managers / Transactions?

  I'm building a spring application for the first time. I'm running into lots of problems with concurrency, and I suspect that there is something wrong with the way I'm managing the backend. The only difference I can see between my backend code and examples I've seen are manager classes. In my code, I have my model (managed by hibernate) and my DAOs on top of that to do CRUD/searching/etc on the models. In example code I have looked at, they never use the DAO directly. Instead, they use manager classes that call the DAOs indirectly. To me, this just seems like pointless code duplication. What are these manager classes for? I've read that they wrap my code in "transactions," but why would I want that?
