• Recover data from an ''unpartitioned'' hard drive

  I'm trying to recover data from a hdd for a friend from work. He was using it on an old win98 PC (so I guess it was a FAT 16 filesystem). When he installed the drive on a new PC his Windows XP can't recognize the filesystem and give an error message saying that the drive is unformatted. I tried to mount the hdd under linux but no partitions appear to be associated with the drive (I have only /dev/sdb associated with that drive and no /dev/sdb1 or sdb2 etc). I've found many articles on the web on how to recover partitions (with scripts like dd and ddrescue) but how do I make it when I have no partitions and the system say my drive is unpartioned? Is it possible to create a new partition without loosing the data?

  We have one big problem at the moment: We need to mirror a filesystem for one of our customers. Thats usual not really a problem, but here it is: On this filesystem there is one folder with millions of hardlinks (yes! MILLIONS!). rsync requires more then 4 days to just build the filelist. We use the following rsync options: rsync -Havz --progress serverA:/data/cms /data/ Has anyone a idea how to speed up this rsync, or use alternatives? We could not use dd as the target disk is smaller then the source.

• 500 Error when using custom account for application pool in IIS 7

  I have a very simple site with only static files in IIS 7 on Windows Server 2008 SP2. When I try to access any static file I get a 500 error. If I rename an html file to have an aspx extension it works fine. The site also works fine when using the built in identity for the application pool. The problem occurs when I switch to using a custom account for the application pool. I have tried using both local and domain accounts to run the application pool under. I have given full control to these accounts on the website directory and files. Turning on tracing reveals this error message: ModuleName: IIS Web Core Notification: 2 HttpStatus: 500 HttpReason: Internal Server Error HttpSubStatus: 0 ErrorCode: 2147943746 ConfigExceptionInfo Notification: AUTHENTICATE_REQUEST ErrorCode: Either a required impersonation level was not provided, or the provided impersonation level is invalid. (0x80070542) I have not had any luck with googling the error code.

  On my server the filesystem includes these partitions: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda6 4.6G 929M 3.5G 21% / /dev/sda5 76M 20M 53M 27% /boot /dev/sda8 449G 199M 426G 1% /home /dev/sda7 4.6G 4.4G 0 100% /var (Output from df -ah) I'm storing the web sites and databases under /var and as you can see it's got full. The /home folder just has basic user directories and nothing else so I'd like to repartition the server so that /dev/sda8 is about 5GB, with the rest going to dev/sda7. What's the easiest way to do this via command line (i.e. SSH)?

• monitoring changes in windows of screen while screen is detached

  It is possible to monitor windows in screen (I mean the terminal multiplexer called screen) with Ctrl-a M. However, I am only aware of the notification when I am looking at any window. What I want, though, is to somehow also be notified if the screen in question has been detached with Ctrl-a d. I.e., I issue the command to monitor a window in screen, then detach that screen, now I want to get a notification if the monitor detects activity, in some form (a string in the bash I'm using, or an email, or anything). Is this possible, and if yes how?

• Solaris to Linux conversion: Use VxFS or GFS?

  We're a Solaris shop looking at RedHat Enterprise Linux and one of the things we're wondering is if we should keep Veritas Volume Manager + FileSystem or go with LVM+ext3 or RedHat's preferred cluster filesystem solution, GFS. One of the things we like about Veritas is that it can use Veritas Volume Replicator to have a remote copy of important filesystems. This functionality seems to be missing from RedHat, DRBD doesn't seem to be packaged in RHEL... So my questions are: Does anybody use VxFS/VxVM/VVR on Linux? Thoughts, experiences? Comparison with LVM+ext3? Anybody using GFS? Thoughts, experiences? Do you do remote replication for disaster recovery, and if so, how? Is there a standard RedHat way?

• Linux LVM snapshot commit or revert?

  Hi, I'm about to perform an experimental upgrade on my CentOS 5 server. If the upgrade fails, I want to be able to back out the changes to the filesystem. This scenario seems similar to the example in Section 3.8 of the LVM HOWTO for LVM2 read-write snapshots - but the example is rather lacking in actual how-to. 1) How would I commit the changes, merging them back into the original partition? 2) How would I revert the changes, restoring the filesystem back to its original state? Should I assume that I'll need to restart several services, if not outright reboot? 3) Is it possible to snapshot only certain directories on a partition, or is it a partition-wide operation? • Suppress EXT3-fs warning on mount

  I am familiar with output suppress on Unix machines, ie: cat /file/that/doesnt/exist > /dev/null 2>& However I can't seem to suppress the output of mount when an ext3 filesystem is mounted for the nth time, and it recommends an fsck. As it happens, fscks are run regularly by another machine, so these warning messages are needlessly interrupting the flow of output to my pretty bash script. These are the errors: # mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt > /dev/null 2>& kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3-fs warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended EXT3 FS 2.4-0.9.19, 19 August 2002 on sd(8,1), internal journal EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm clearly blocking both fd's, but somehow output is still getting through. This is GNU Bash v2.05a

• Is there a way to have customised text instead of subject in Thunderbird's inbox list?

  I am getting a lot of informational emails like "You've got a new message from ..." or "Notification of Donation Received", which often do not contain any information in the subject so that I have to open the email to see who sent the message or who donated which amount. I'd love to be able to make TB parse incoming emails and then display something interesting instead of the original subject, e.g. by defining a regular expression pattern. I know how to write regular expressions, but I do not know whether there is a way or an addon to modify the displayed text in the messages view. EDIT for clarification: I would like donation notifications from Paypal not to be displayed as original Notification of Donation Received but rather Paypal: John Doe has donated 50$

• Time between AWS Notifying of Scale Down and Terminating instance

  Here is the scenario, there are multiple EC2 instances behind a load balancer. When traffic dies down, the SCALE_DOWN policy is triggered from a CloudWatch alarm. What I would like, is for the instance that is going to be terminated, or a separate server altogether, to be able to run a quick script that will execute a few commands to ensure all data has been transferred. My initial question was going to be how can I send a notification when an instance is going to be terminated by an auto scale, SCALE_DOWN policy. But then I saw this question Amazon EC2 notifying the instance when the autoscale service terminates it. If the notification is sent, how much time is there before the instance actually gets terminated? Are there any parameters to specify this time? Would it be a better idea to notify an instance that it is no longer needed, and get the instance to terminate itself once it has finished running the final script? Or, am I making this into a bigger problem than it actually is, and theres a far simpler solution?

• Recover data from a corrupted virtualbox vmdk file?

  The power went out while I was doing a build on a VirtualBox machine, when I restarted the vmdk for the disk the vm was using was corrupted, apparently irrecoverably. I have been able to grep the 66GB vmdk file and it finds strings from the code I was working on that hadn't gotten in to subversion yet (yeah, yeah I know). But the strings are either in the shell history or what look to be strings inside object files. Any ideas for finding/recovering the source code? If it helps the vm was Linux, Fedora Core 10 on an ext3 filesystem. The host is an ubuntu 10.04_amd64 and has an ext4 filesystem.

• Unmounted root partition

  My server running Debian lenny has just had a power cut recently and its come back up with the root partition in read only mode. I tried to remount the filesystem in read write mode with mount -n -o remount,rw / which then gave the output mount: block device /dev/hda1 is write-protected, mounting read-only. But now the root filesystem isn't mounted at all so I can't run anything to mount the partition again or any other command for that matter such as shutdown because /bin/ isn't there. Is there anything I can do remotely?

  I have a webservice /test/Service1.asmx in the same folder as a page /test/test.aspx. The page works fine but I get the message bellow for the services in the same location. I know the file is there and the url is correct, and I have added the script module and managed handler as well. • Group policy to disable notifications of particular errors?

  How do i disable the notifications of particular errors? A little background to my issue. During the installation of the Kaspersky, it disables all the windows firewall for all except the domain. I have remedied this by creating an offline policy in Kaspersky which enables the Kaspersky firewall when out of the office (ie not connected to the office network). The problem now is that users in the office now see a notification showing that the firewall is disabled even though it’s enabled in all scenarios. It’s just that work and home show as disabled when the clients are connected to the office LAN.   I have a VPS hosting with a VZFS file system. How can I determine maximum file size of VZFS partition? UPD: Free space (or total space) is not what i need. Sometimes file cannot occupy a hole partition volume - fat16 with 2Gb limit is a good example. I need to use a large database file (say, 64Gb) and so I need to know if a file system of VPS hosting will cope with it. It is easy to calculate for an ext3 filesystem using tune2fs, but VPS uses VSFS by Virtuozzo, and it is documented bad. Is it any generic way to calculate maximum file size for some filesystem in linux?

  I've just fitted two disks to my home server. I'm trying to format and then raid them but I'm getting a problem that hours of Googling hasn't resolved this.   I have two volumes of amazon EC2 where by default 1 GiB volume using which has fulled. Now I want to use my second volume which is 9 Gim. I used command cat /proc/partitions I got major minor #blocks name 202 1 1048576 xvda1 202 80 9437184 xvdf Then I hit mkfs.ext3 -F /dev/sdf its showing mkfs.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to determine filesystem size then I hit command df and I got Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/xvda1 1032088 1031280 0 100% / tmpfs 313160 8 313152 1% /lib/init/rw udev 297800 24 297776 1% /dev tmpfs 313160 4 313156 1% /dev/shm overflow 1024 32 992 4% /tmp means still I am unable to use my 9 GiB space Volume. I am conform I have two volume where attachment information is i-7e4fb41c:/dev/sda1 (attached) and i-7e4fb41c:/dev/sdf (attached) where only sda1 is using. Any one know how may I use my second volume(sdf). Thx

  iTunes <- iPhone. At sync time, a back-up is performed. Which data is included, which data is not? i.e. are songs (potentially redundant) backed-up so that a computer ends up having both the source file on the filesystem and the copy within the device back-up? Is anything on the iPhone filesystem not backed up? (i.e. on a Mac using Time Machine, some files are excluded from the back-up even if not all of them can be recreated upon restore - I lost my postfix config this way..)

• How to turn archiving off in thunderbird 3.1?

  Hi I don't really understand what the archiving really does in thunderbird but it is kinda annoying. Like if I get a email and read it. It will turn to read in my inbox, but will show up as unread in my archives section. So the next time I get an email the thunderbird notification will popup and show that I have 1 new email but will show all those unread one in my archive. So even though I read all of the emails in my inbox the next time I get an email I get a popup notification of 6 messages when it should be 1 since 5 of those where in the archive and marked as unread. Anyone know how to stop this?

• Large file copy from NFS to local disk performance drop

  I'm trying to copy a 200GB file from an NFS mount to a local disk. The local disk is an XFS filesystem on a LVM on top of a RAID 5 system (hardware RAID controler). I'm using rsync to monitor the transfer speed. At the beginning the IO speed is about 200MB/s, stable for the first 18GB. But then the performance drops by a factor of 10-20 and never recovers to the initial rate. Sometimes it reaches about 50-100MB/s but just for a few seconds and then the process seems to hang for a bit. At the same time all file-stat operations on the target filesystem are blocking for a long time (minutes). Also interrupting the copy process blocks for several minutes, a sub-sequent delete of the partly copied file takes also several minutes. Any ideas what could be causing this?

  I would like to know if it's possible to operate different databases on different filesystem locations. Background: we are a hosting service, which hosts mysql, web, and smtp to it's customer, but all our services (sql, smtp, http) are located in a different place. We are going to assign a single logical volume to a customer, which will accommodate the customer's mailing, weppages and (hopefully) sql database. Web pages and mailing are already covered, but I am not able to find a configuration setting which would enable me to specify the location of a database (the directory where mysql stores the DB). Let me please highlight, the target here is to relocate different databases to different locations in the filesystem, not moving them from a single place to an another (single) place. Also please do not bother answering with soft and hard symbolic links. ;) Thanks

  I have a Java application performing a large volume (hundreds of MB) of continuous output (streaming plain text) to about a dozen files a ext3 SAN filesystem. Occasionally, this application pauses for several seconds at a time. I suspect that something related to ext3 vsfs (Veritas Filesystem) functionality (and/or how it interacts with the OS) is the culprit. What steps can I take to confirm or refute this theory? I am aware of iostat and /proc/diskstats as starting points.
