  Want to win a trip to TechEd 2011? INETA NorAm is hosting a contest with our partners to see who can build an .NET application making effective use of reusable components to solve a problem. The Rules: Any .NET Application (WinForms, ASP.NET, WPF, Silverlight, Windows Phone 7, etc.) built in the last year (since 1/1/2010) using at least 1 component from at least 1 approved vendor. Then make a 3 - 5 minute Camtasia video showing your entry and describing what component(s) you used and why your application is cool. Our judges will review the submissions and the best two will win a scholarship to Tech·Ed 2011, May 16-19 in Atlanta GA including airfare, hotel, and conference pass. The Judging: Entries will be judged on four criteria: Effective use of a component to solve a problem/display data Innovative use of components Impact using components (i.e. reduction in lines of code written, increased productivity, etc.) Most creative use of a component. • Dirt Cheap Bi-Directional Antenna Wirelessly Extends Your LAN

  If you’re looking for an effective way to link remote LANs without the hassle of laying cable, this DIY bi-directional antenna is a quick (and cheap) method for bringing internet access to outbuildings and other locations. Tinker Danilo Larizza needed to share internet access between apartments that are relatively close together but not hardwired–ruling out simply sharing the access via existing LAN infrastructure. His solution combines a simple scrap wire antenna array mounted inside a plastic food bin (seen here with the cover removed to show the antenna) and some coaxial cable to link the antenna to two routers. Our favorite part about his build is that he constructed the pair to establish if the antenna setup would even work in his location and intended to buy commercial antennas if it did; his Tupperware models worked so well, however, they’re now the permanent solution.   The last few months have been pretty crazy. Just before the MVP summit in February I was approached about changing to a different project with my (then current) employer, and right after the summit I was approached by another company. Eventually I went with the new company and a new role in the Information Assurance field. More to come on that as things progress. All that being said I've not been as active in the .NET community as I once was and I miss it - so I'm looking to dive back in especially as Windows Phone 7 draws nearer and nearer. Speaking of the community - many of you may not recognize me if you see me now :) I had told my son for the last couple years that I would cut my hair before he turned 5 (he always asked how come he didn't have long hair) and he turns 5 (time has flown!) on June 19th so May 30th I cut my long hair down pretty short and donated the hair to Locks of Love. As Chris said to me on Twitter, "pics or it didn't happen" - well fortunately my wife was there to document the whole thing so I'll get a picture or two posted here soon.

• How do I get Graphics drivers / bluetooth / card reader working on an Acer Aspire V3-571G?

  A couple of days ago I bought an Acer Aspire V3-571G laptop without a system installed on it. The only thing that was there was Linux Linpus. I created a bootable CD with Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit - I read that my processor was 64 bit and that it might be a good configuration for my gear (I'm not especially fluent with all the computer stuff, still trying to learn) and replaced Linpus with Ubuntu. Everything seemed to work fine, but there're few exceptions to that which came pass my way. My bluetooth doesn't work. It seems to be switched on, but when I check my system settings the button is actually off, and I can't drag it 'perminently' to the 'on' position. Tried a couple of commands I found on the net, none of them helped and there was no word whatsoever in my BIOS settings about enabling bluetooth. My card reader has some serious problems with copying more than one file at a time. I tried to put some music on my phone through a MicroSD card adapter (because my bluetooth doesn't work) and it got stuck every single time I copied an album on it. • Multi-Resolution Mobile Development

  I'm about to start development on my first game for mobile phone (I already have a flash prototype completed so it's jsut a matter of "porting" it to mobile and fixing up the code) and plan on hopefully being able to get the game working on iphones and most android devices. I am using Haxe along with OpenFL and HaxeFlixel for development. My question is: What resolution should I design the game in initially and/or what is the best way to develop a game for multiple resolutions. I have found multiple different methods, the best, in my opinion, being strategy 3 on this page: http://wiki.starling-framework.org/manual/multi-resolution_development. However I have some questions about this. First, what would the best base resolution to use be, the guide suggests 240*320 which seems alright to me, although if I chose to use pixel graphics as I most probably will given I'm using HaxeFlixel, I'm not sure if they'll look too blocky on larger screens which I'm not even sure is a problem as it might still look alright. (Honestly, not sure about that and if anyone has any examples of games that use this method and look nice). Finally, please feel free to share whatever methods you use and think is best. For example, HaxeFlixel has a scaling feature that scales the game to fit the exact screen size, but I'm afraid that would lead to blurry and improperly scaled graphics since it would scale by non-integers. But, I'm not sure how noticeable a problem that may or may not be. Although from experience I'm pretty sure it won't look nice and currently I do not think I'm going to go for this option. So, I would really appreciate any help on this subject. Thank you in advance.

• USB mass storage couldn't get mounted

  It's my android phone SD card which was indicated damaged by android yesterday night, out of the blue! I put it directly to a USB port with a USB SD card holder case, so in that way I can recover it with TestDisk, which I had experienced before on a similar situation. I also noticed that there is a change in file system and capacity: File System : RAW Capacity : 0 (unknown capacity) Also TestDisk doesn't show it on its partitions list. A 2 GB SD card is not that important in price but I've a lot of files and medias which I need them. Used a mini card reader, TestDisk displayed it on its list but a quick search and or a deep search doesn't have any results No partition found or selected for recovery and then I should quit the program. During planning, evaluation, quality control, and disaster mitigation, the people having their say at each step means that successful database deployment is a carefully managed course of action. With so many factors involved at every stage, we would love to find a way for our software to help out, by simplifying processes, speeding them up or joining together the people and the steps that make it all happen. We’re hoping our new research group for database delivery (SQL Server and Oracle) will help us understand the views and experiences of those of you out there in the trenches managing database changes. As part of our new group, we’ll be running a variety of research sessions, including surveys and phone interviews, over coming months. They’ve rolled out a new Release Candidate update that includes Android 2.3 and a host of performance tweaks. First thing to note is that this is an RC and if you upgrade from CyanogenMod 6 to CyanogenMod 7 RC you’ll be trading a little bit of stability and a few features that haven’t made the jump from 6 to 7 in return for the newest features of Android 2.3. • Live programming help

  This idea has been floating around my head for a few years. I started some work on it but I just want to know if it is feasible, sensible, or if there is something else like it out there. Dont want to know I was wasting time on a solved issue. Whenever I have a programming issue, this is my sequence: Google it!: That usually brings up a lot of things: blogs, forums, stackoverflow, stackexchange, and even the official docs of the language/framework/cms. Ask on IRC: I format my question and try to get people on IRC to help me. Make a post: I create a post on forums/stackoverflow/stackexchange or shout on twitter with hashtags. Now a lot of the time I am in the middle of a project with a deadline. So I want answers NOW!!! Sometimes just 5-15 minutes worth of attention. Usually by the time I am failing at getting answers at #2, I am imagining how many people are ONLINE NOW with the skill and my exact answer but playing video games, watching youtube or idling online. However, if they were motivated, they would invest the 15 mintes helping me, that would make a world of a difference. I am even in positions where I would PAY for that 15 minutes of instant help. If your rate is as much as $100/hour (relatively good programmer) that is $25 that might save me 3 hours. This help would be live, text chat/skype/phone/screenshare. Should I continue developing this idea or is there a better alternative out there? Or is this even an unfeasible idea?

• Can't shutdown Ubuntu (Wubi Installation)

  I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 using Wubi. The installation went correctly and everything was working fine until I tried to shutdown. I clicked shutdown and then Ubuntu started shutdown, but as soon as I saw the Ubuntu logo with blank dots under, it froze. I had to perform a hard shutdown. After booting my computer back and going into Ubuntu, I tried shutting it down again but this time it took me on a black page with lots and lots of log writing on the screen and after a little while, it stopped writing stuff. I was able to input characters using the keyboard and everything, but it never shutdown. I had to perform a hard shutdown again. Now it always gives me a Ubuntu logo and freezes. What should I do? I know hard shutdowns are bad and want to avoid them. Is there anyway to make shutdowns work? I tried a reboot and it also froze on the Ubuntu logo. Sony VAIO Model E SVE17115FDB Laptop. Graphic card - AMD RADEON HD 7650M (and it installed correctly in Ubuntu). BIOS - H2O Bios. Processor - Intel i7-3612QM. Edit: I only installed the AMD/ATI proprietary drivers FGLRX, not the AMD/ATI post release drivers because they keep showing an error message. Here is jockey.log. Edit 2: Here is the log that i mentioned before that appeared on my screen, it appeared after i tried reinstalling my AMD driver but failed so i reinstalled the other one.
