  • Which IDE / code editor was the first to introduce a code completion feature?

    I am trying to identify the point in time where code completion (autocomplete/intellisense/whatever) was first introduced in IDEs and would appreciate any pointers. By code completion here I mean a feature within the editor that offers methods or suggestions based on the code that was already typed, and I am interested in programming language related completions (not word processor style completion).

  • Is there a library / api for reading the contents of a .hlp help file?

    I have a help file for my program and was asked to add a description of the menus in a toolbar as the user browses them. So I thought I could just use the beginning of the menu's description of the help but just cant find how to access the contents of it. I saw WinHelp has a macro language, so I figured maybe through this, but I couldnt find any references on this around. Anybody now some pointers or examples of hot to do this?

    I am trying to assign a cell in excel for the user to type the printer name where they want the print out to go and then use that value in the Application.ActivePrinter = (use the cell value) Even though I have done the programming assigning a name to the cell and using it in a variable it is giving me an error. I have set my variable as string, text, object and variant already and it's not working. Do you know what code should I use to be able to do this?

  • Worst aspect of Python for a newbie

    I'm wondering specifically what experienced programmers thought when they started developing in Python. I'm sure the answer depends on your background, but my own personal answer is the conversion of basically anything in the language to a True/False value in boolean contexts. Resulting in "oddities" like: if x: not meaning the same thing as: if x == True: I understand why, but it bugs me, and I certainly had to think about it a bit when I first ran into it.

Basically what i am doing is running a function that exists in my app delegate from a view controller, but the app delegate needs to use a variable stored in the view controller from which the app delegate function was called.   • Which do I select - Windows Azure or Amazon EC2 - for hosting unmanaged C++ code?

    We have a server solution written entirely in unmanaged Visual C++. It contains complicated methods for really heavy data processing. The whole thing contains millions lines of code, so rewritning it all in some other language is not an option. We could write some extra code or make isolated changes, but rewriting everything is out of the question. Now we'd like to put it on a cloud. Which platform do we choose - Amazon EC2 or Windows Azure - and why?

    I have looked at a couple of books and all I have looked at were just discussing the technicalities of OOP. By technicalities I mean, here's a concept, here's some code, now get working. I have yet to see a book that discusses the architectural process, what are the ways of doing this, why doing this is bad, how to actually incorporate design patterns in a real-world project, etc. Can you recommend a good resource or book? I am mainly programming with PHP but a language-agnostic book/resource would do :)

Many applications like conky have the vim syntax files like "conkyrc.vim" for vim but not for emacs.     I am not sure if you can post revision programming questions in here but i am stuck with some algorithms revision If an algorithm is quadratic it takes time proportional to the number of n^2 ? So if the slides say its almost 1/2 the square of n records is this the same as saying (n^2 * 0.5) Thanks
