  • How would someone implement mathematical formulae in java?

    What I mean is like have to user input a string with multiple variables and get the value of those variable. Like a simple quadratic formula: x^2 + 5x + 10. Or in java: (Math.pow(x,2)) + (x * 5) + 10The user would then enter that and then the program would solve for x. I will be using the BeanShell Interpreter class to interpret the string as an equation. But how would I solve for x?

If the recommended method is to still define it locally, then I'm wondering if there are any situations where it is better to define globally when defining locally is still an option.

This works fine if I wan't to use the serialized data as an std::string, but my intention is to convert it directly to a char* buffer. How can I achieve this without creating a temporary string?

  • Inconsistent email formatting with inline css created using Javamail

    Okay, so I have a program that sends an email when it is finished running. I use inline css to format the email. This was working up until yesterday however now I am seeing different formats depending on which email account I view the email in.     Hi all, I'm not very familiar with the many-to-many insertion process using Entity Framework 4, POCO. I have a blog with 3 tables: Post, Comment, and Tag. A Post can have many Tags and a Tag can be in many Posts. Here are the Post and Tag models: public class Tag { public int Id { get; set; } [Required] [StringLength(25, ErrorMessage = "Tag name can't exceed 25 characters.")] public string Name { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<Post> Posts { get; set; } } public class Post { public int Id { get; set; } [Required] [StringLength(512, ErrorMessage = "Title can't exceed 512 characters")] public string Title { get; set; } [Required] [AllowHtml] public string Content { get; set; } public string FriendlyUrl { get; set; } public DateTime PostedDate { get; set; } public bool IsActive { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<Comment> Comments { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<Tag> Tags { get; set; } } Now when I'm adding a new post, I'm not sure what would be the right way to do. I'm thinking that I'll have a textbox where I can select multiple tags for that post (this part is already done), in my controller, I will check to see if the tag is already exists or not, if not, then I will insert the new tag. But I'm not even sure based on the models that I've created for EF, will they create a PostsTags table, or they are creating just a Tags and a Posts table and links between the two? How would I insert the new Post and set the tags to that post? Is it just newPost.Tags = Tags (where Tags are the one that got selected, do I even need to check to see if they already exists?), and then something like _post.Add(newPost);? Thanks.

  • Why doesn't Java warn about a == "something"?

    This might sound stupid, but why doesn't the Java compiler warn about the expression in the following if statement: String a = "something"; if(a == "something"){ System.out.println("a is equal to something"); }else{ System.out.println("a is not equal to something"); } I realize why the expression is untrue, but AFAIK, a can never be equal to the String literal "something". The compiler should realize this and at least warn me that I'm an idiot who is coding way to late at night.

    I usually see Ruby on Rails books using script/generate model Story name:string link:string which is a singular Story, while when it is controller script/generate controller Stories index then the Story now is Stories, which is plural. Is this a standard on Ruby on Rails? Is it true in other MVC frameworks too, like CakePHP, Symfony, Django, or TurboGears? I see that in the book Rails Space, the controller is also called User, which is the same as the model name, and it is the only exception I see.
