• Auto-complete/suggestion popup menu in GtkTextView

  I'm trying to create a system that will allow me to respond to the current text and auto-complete/suggest what should come next. For example if the user starts to type "Batm" then the system would respond with a menu showing the full completed word "Batman". Think of an IDE like Eclipse or Visual Studio and you get the idea. I understand how to create a popup menu in Gtk+ but what I don't understand is the following: How do I grab the word that the user is currently typing from a GtkTextView (or SourceView) so that I can do a lookup and offer suggestions? How do I position the menu in such a way that it sits next to the current text item (like it would in an IDE)? If anyone could offer suggestions or even a link to a tutorial or example on how to do this correctly I would be forever grateful. As always thanks for you help! Programming language: C

  There is a question in my programming languages textbook that is as follows: Write a C function that includes the following sequence of statements: x = 21; int x; x = 42; Run the program and explain the results. Rewrite the same code in C++ and Java and compare the results. I have written code, and played with it in all three languages but I can not even get it to compile. This includes declaring x above the three lines as well as in the calling function (as this question is obviously attempting to illustrate scoping issues) I'd like to explain the results and do the comparisons on my own, as it is an assignment question but I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to how to get this code to compile? • Can anyone recommend a primer to Erlang?

  I've recently found myself getting more and more interested in Erlang. I've purchased a book (Programming in Erlang) and started reading up on the basics. Reading books is time consuming so I am looking to shortcut this a bit and go back to the book later. What I lack is a good introductory tutorial. Kind of like, hands on, this is what you need to get started in Erlang, these are best practices, this is how you organize code and this is how you do a small project. I've googled this topic extensively and haven't had much luck. ;)

• Cross-platform SOA framework

  I'm looking for a good cross-platform SOA framework that preferably works with several programming languages like C++, Python, and C#. I recently learned about Thrift, but that doesn't seem to work with MSVC from the documentation I've read and requires the use of Cygwin or MinGW to even compile the Thrift compiler. Does Thrift work with MSVC and if not, are there any alternatives that would meet my needs? Such as being able to generate C# and Python bindings and work on Linux, Mac, and Windows. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

• controlling bluetooth connection in matlab

  we have a project in which we have to pick randomly generated numbers from a remote device, say mobile. there is a simple java application to generate numbers. next, we have to recieve those numbers in our matlab program via bluetooth connection with the device. assuming those numbers are temperature readings, we want to recieve a new number after every 10 sec and display the number on our matlab GUI program. the problem is do we implement bluetooth protocol through our programming? or use the matlab templates? because otherwise whenever we want to transfer file from a mobile to computer, we have to manually click "recieve a file" in blutooth wizard , just like we normally do to transfer a file. we want to enable the connection once, and then recieve text files after every 10 seconds to be read in our matlab program. can anyone please tell is it even possible in matlab? if yes, how do we establish such an automatic real time connection?

• [SCORM 2004] the cmi.total_time parameter does not return anything.

  I am programming a SCORM 2004 product. I can update the session_time, it works. I can set the status (passed, failed, etc...) I also can get the cmi.location time. No problems! But I don't succeed atingt get the total time (cmi.total_time). I have tested on 2 LMS: On Ganesha the API.GetValue('cmi.total_time') is an empty string. On Moodle the API.GetValue('cmi.total_time') is just a "P". I do have the correct logs with correct session times. EDIT. I also try on cloud.scorm.com and cmi.total_time returns each time PT0H0M0S.

  When implementing the interpreter for my programming language I first thought of a simple console window which allows the user to enter some code which is then executed as a standalone program as a shell. But there are severe problems: If every line of code the user enters is handled as a standalone program, it has to go through the tokenizer and parser and is then just executed by the interpreter - what about functions then? How can the Python/Ruby interactive consoles (IDLE, irb) "share" the code? How is the code entered handled? Example: >> def x: >> print("Blah") >> >> x() Where is the function stored so it can be called at any time again? How can the interactive console take everything entered as obviously one program without executing everything over and over again?

• In Visual Studio 2008, how can I make control+click do a "Go To Definition"?

  I know this is not strictly about programming, but it's pretty close. Anyway, in Delphi, you can hold control and click on a method to jump to its definition. In VS2008, you have to right-click and select "Go To Definition". I use this function quite often, so I'd really like to get VS to behave like delphi in this regard - its so much quicker to ctrl+click. I don't think there's a way to get this working in base VS2008 - am I wrong? Or maybe there's a plugin I could use? Edit: Click then F12 does work - but isn't really a good solution for me.. It's still way slower than ctrl+click. I might try AutoHotkey, since I'm already running it for something else. Edit: AutoHotkey worked for me. • Learning Objective-C 2.0 and ASP.NET 4.0 simultaneously?

  (HOBBY) I own a Macbook Pro and iPod Touch so developing iPhone/iPod/iPad apps seems like a logical thing to do in order to get some experience in the programming field. Besides I want to write a new application similar to the Capsuleer (Character skills monitor app for EVE Online MMO) but with more features. It's something I'd love to have on my own iPod Touch and I am sure other people will welcome a new EVE Online app for their iPhone or iPod Touch. (CAREER) I want to learn ASP.NET (and possibly Silverlight later on) for my potential future job. I plan to work in the .NET field, so it's a good idea for me to start learning C# and ASP.NET ASAP. Is it a good idea to learn completely unrelated technologies at the same time? Or would it be better to learn one thing at a time? Objective-C first, and ASP.NET second. Or vice versa. Thanks, Sahat

I am trying to set the size of the array using a variable but I am getting an error: Storage size of 'array' isn't constant !! 01 int bound = bound*4; 02 static GLubyte vertsArray[bound]; I have noticed that when I replace bounds (within the brackets on line 02) with the number say '20', the program would run with no problems.   I'm about to do some Office integration creating charts from some data-sources and adding them to PPT slides. But some coworkers are saying using PPT charts is suboptimal as they are missing features of Excel charts, and are different in many ways. They're unable to come up with examples, and so am I... I found the following blog about Office2007, saying there are some differences in the programming model, but that they all use the same underlying engine.   I am developing a simple platform game using Java using BlueJ as the IDE. Right now I have player/enemy sprites, platforms and other items in the game drawn using polygons and simple shapes. Eventually I hope to replace them with actual images. For now I would like to know what is the simplest solution to setting an image (either URL or from local source) as the 'background' of my game window/canvas? • Wanting a type of grid for a pixel editor

  Hi, I am currently trying to develop a basic pixel editor application to build up my programming experience with Java. I am designing it so the user has several colour options on, they click on an option and then they can drag over the cells in the grid and they change colour (like a typical image editor, but with a sort of snap on to each grid cell) Any idea of what Java component, if any, is able to implement this type of grid in Java? I had thought of each cell being a JButton, but this seemed terribly inefficient and I don't think it would be possible to change the colour of each cell(button) with out individually clicking on each one. • C++ option/long option implementation

  I am working on a parser for meta programming language using C++ on Linux platform. Right now, I need to implement option/long option for the parser to provide some additional features. Basically, if the user pass in some additional option, the parser needs to store statistics while parsing the text files. I can think of two ways to implement it. One way is to user global to store options entered by users. Another way is to create a singleton class to store options. So I would like to know if there is any other way to implement it. • Can I send a ESC d command to a POS printer from perl?

  I have a Star TSP100 printer and I'm having few problems with it really. My problem is that I'm not as familiar with programming as I should be - but I'm learning! The programmers reference for the Star printer says that if I send a ESC d to the printer - that will activate the built-in cutter - which I would like to do very much. • Methods for making R plots look like Excel plots?

  I've been poking around with R graphical parameters trying to make my plots look a little more professional (e.g., las=1, bty="n" usually help). But not quite there. Started playing with tikzDevice. A huge improvement! Amazing how much better things look when the font sizes and styles in the figure match those of the surrounding document. Still, not quite there. What I'm ultimately looking for are those professional gradient shading, rounded corners, and shadow effects found in MS Excel plots. I know they're probably considered chart junk, but I like them. They're just nice looking. Q: How can I get these effects into my R plots? Do people usually just export to Inkscape and doodle over there? It would be nice if there were a literate programming approach. Is there an R package that handles these effects outright?

In Java IDE such as Eclipse, if I do not know the classname in a package, I can just type a dot (.) after a package name, then I will get a list of all the classes in that package in the IDE. How I can configure visual studio to do the similar thing, say, if I click a namespace name in a file (for example, using System), or add a dot after the namespace, all the classes in that namespace will be displayed somewhere in the IDE?
