  • even small file upload stops activity on apache/rails

    on my rails(2.3.5) app(currently 50-70rpm, maximum response time around 0.7s), uploading even 700k file(using paperclip plugin) locks up the server for web requests for everyone for 2 minutes! (other apps on same server work normally) does anyone have a clue why that might be happening? i am using some mysql transactions which lock the database also if that might be an issue i read http://www.therailsway.com/2009/4/23/uploading-files but it couldn't be locking server for 2 minutes for a small file, could it?!

    I have a table with 5 string columns, all can be NULLs. After I read the data from this table, I want to convert any null values into empty strings. The reason is that I need to compare these columns with columns in another table of the same schema (using conditional split), and null values would cause the comparison to evaluate to NULL. Is there any functionality in SSIS that allows me to convert NULL's to empty strings, or just not having to deal with NULL's at all?

    In my application I use some icons. Where should I store the path of the directory containing those icons ? The icons are used in different classes so it doesn't really make sense to store them in one of those classes in particular. I read that global variables are evil, but is it acceptable to use a class (eg Commons) containing only public static final fields to store this king of data ? What solution is used in professional applications ?

    It's fairly simple to play a sound file, say temp.wav, from Visual Studio C#. I'm looking for a way to do this without temp.wav being locatable from the machine running the program.   • Why does the web page I fetch with Perl look odd?

    I have a Perl script to open this page http://svejo.net/popular/all/new/ and filter the names of the posts but except headers everything seems encrypted. Nothing can be read. When I open the same page in a browser everything looks fine including the source code. How is it possible to encrypt a page for a script and not for a browser? My Perl script sends the same headers as my browser (Google Chrome).

    Hello, I have just started learning Haskell and have got stumped on how to add a rating to a custom data type. The data type I'm using has a name, a year and a tuple (userName and their rating), it looks like: data Wine = Wine String Int [Rating] deriving (Eq,Ord,Show,Read) type Rating = (String, Int) I wanted to allow a user to rate a given wine from a database, stored as [Wine] but cant figure out how to to it.   • Why is it safe to use copy & paste in Flash but not in Javascript?

    I'm trying to use copy'n paste in one of my web apps and have read a few articles/SO questions about it. Most people say that using Flash is the only option since most browsers don't allow access to the system clipboard because of security concerns. I can understand this but I wonder why it is okay for Flash do this, but not for the browser. Or has it got nothing to do with security and it is simply to complicated to implement this for cross-platform browser vendors?
