  I'm making a game where at some point the game will create enemies of random types. Each type of enemy available is defined on its own class derived from an enemy superclass. To do this, obviously the different types of enemies should be known. This is what I have thought of: Just make a list manually. Very simple to do, but I don't like it because I'll be adding more enemy types over time, so any time I add a new class I have to remember to update this (same if I remove an enemy). I would like some kind of auto-updating list. A completely component based system. There are no different classes for each enemy, but definitions of enemies in some file where all enemy types can be found. I really don't need that level of complexity for my game. I'm still using a component based model to some degree, but each Enemy type gets defined on its own class. Java Annotation processing. Give each enemy subclass an annotation like @EnemyType("whatever"), then code an annotation processor that writes in a file all available enemy types. Any time a new class is added the file gets updated after compilation.This gives me a feeling of failure even if its a good solution, it's very dependant on Java, so it means I cant think of a general design good for any kind of language. Also I think that this would be too much work for something so simple. I would like to see comments on these ideas and other possible solutions Thanks

• If you had to go back and re-learn your skill set, how would you do it?

  My younger brother is looking to start programming. He's 14, and technically-inclined, but no real experience programming. He's looking to me for guidance, and I don't feel as if my experience is enough, so I figured I'd ask here. He's more interested in web programming, but also has an interest in desktop/mobile/server applications. What would be a good learning path for him to take? I'm going to buy him a bunch of books for Christmas to get him started; the question is, what should he learn, and in which order? The way I see it, he needs to learn theory and code. I'd like to start him off with Python or Ruby or PHP. If he wants to get in to web, he's also going to need to learn HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc. Out of those three domains (Languages, Theory, Markup/Etc.), what is the best order do you think to learn in? Also, am I missing anything? Thanks!

  Possible Duplicate: So now Google has said no to old browsers when can the rest of us follow suit? Normally a SO browser but this question doesn't fit there, hopefully it fits here. I just want to ask from web designers' point of view if it's wrong to not care about supporting Internet Explorer or older browsers. The site I'm designing looks great in all browsers except IE9-. There are certain things that IE doesn't support or behave like other browsers; AJAX, JQuery, webkit stuff, some CSS styles, drop-and-drop files from OS etc etc, but it all works great in Safari, FireFox, Chrome etc. Should I be that concerned? I know there are several people that use IE, but it's limitations have just been causing me more work by having to come up with workarounds. From what I've read, many of the issues I've been having should be solved with IE10, but not everybody keeps up to date. I know of several people who are still using IE6! Again, I'm hoping this is the right place to ask a question like this, and if not, please point me to the right stack exchange site instead of just downvoting me. Thanks!

• D20 java engine

  I'm trying to incorporate PCGen into my application to avoid recreating the wheel for D20 system. (Are there any other libraries out there?) In other words I would like to use PCGen as a library and do things like: CRUD characters (and all related information) Experience/level managements I don't need the GUI part of it just the information to pass to my application. This is a scenario I can think of: 1. Load available custom classes 2. Create a new Character/NPC 3. Transfer the stats to my system 4. Player keeps playing so I need to update experience 5. Save player in my system and recreate it later. I'm trying to start to create a character from PCClass with no luck. Looking at the code it seems it'll try to load it. I assume load from a file generated from the GUI. Is there a way of bypassing the GUI for all this? I was looking for a tutorial of some sorts without luck. I was able to figure out how to use the dice within PCGen but that's about it. Any ideas?

• What is the fastest way for me to become a full stack developer? [on hold]

  I run a small webdesign firm. I have an overview of HTML, CSS, JS, PHP(laravel), MySQL. I did a few courses on code academy. I wanted to build a web app in the company. I find that I am severely crippled by the lack of programming expertise. I want to become a full stack developer who can build a prototype on his own. I cannot spend 5-10k USD on the boot camp courses. Can someone suggest structured courses which can help me become a full stack developers? I found the following websites but I donot know if they can help me become one. My goal: Be able to make a working prototype of the ideas I come up with.(This is my primary goal. I do not want to be the lead developer. I just want to be able to make a prototype.) Several questions I have in mind: Will it be fine if I stick to PHP(laravel)? Should I be using ROR? I have come across a few online resources: Codeacademy, codeschool,teamtreehouse,and theodinproject. These are within my affordability range. I can commit to a 2-3 months intensively to learn programming. What do you suggest I do?

  I want to use svcutil to map multiple wsdl namespace to clr namespace when generating service proxies. I use strong versioning of namespaces and hence the generated clr namespaces are awkward and may mean many client side code changes if the wsdl/xsd namespace version changes. Now this is not possible. The svcutil allows to map only one or all namespaces, not a list of mappings. I can do one mapping as shown below but not multiple svcutil.exe /t:code *.wsdl *.xsd /n:"http://mydomain.com/xsd/Model/Store/2009/07/01, MyDomain.Model.Address" /o:TestClient\WebServiceProxy4.cs But is there any solution. Svcutil is not magic, it is written in .Net and programatically generating the proxies. Has anyone written an alternate to svcutil or point me to directions so that I can write one.

• Debugging matchit plugin in vim (under Cygwin)

  The "matchit" plugin for vim is supposed to allow you to use the % key to jump between matching start/end tags when editing HTML, as well as /* and */ comment delimiters when editing other kinds of code. I've followed the exact instructions in ":help matchit", but % still doesn't work for me. It seems silly to ask "Why doesn't this work?" so instead I'm asking How can I diagnose the problem? Pointers to references are welcome, but specific vim-plugin-debugging techniques are preferred. • Combined SOAP/JSON/XML in WCF, using UriTemplate

  I'm trying to build a generic web service interface using WCF, to allow 3rd party developers to hook into our software. After much struggling and reading (this question helped a lot), I finally got SOAP, JSON and XML (POX) working together. The part I'd like to fix is the queries. I have to use TestService.svc/xml/GetDateOffset?numDays=4 instead of TestService.svc/xml/GetDateOffset/4. If I specify the UriTemplate, I get the error: Endpoints using 'UriTemplate' cannot be used with 'System.ServiceModel.Description.WebScriptEnablingBehavior'. But of course without using <enableWebScript/>, JSON doesn't work. The only other thing I've seen that I think will work is making 3 different services (.svc files), that all implement an interface that specifies the contract, but in the classes specify different WebGet/WebInvoke attributes on each class. This seems like a lot of extra work, that frankly, I don't see why the framework doesn't handle for me. The implementation of the classes would all be the same, except for the attributes, which means over time it would be easy for bugs/changes to get fixed/done in one implementation but not the others, leading to inconsistent behaviour when using the JSON vs SOAP implementation for example. Am I doing something wrong here? Am I taking a totally wrong approach and misusing WCF? Is there a better way to do this? With my experience doing web stuff, I think it should be possible for some kind of framework to handle this ... I even have an idea in my head of how to build it. It just seems like WCF is supposed to be doing this, and I don't really want to reinvent the wheel.

When line is 'http://www.google.com/', it works, I think it's the UTF-8 encoding of the file that I opened... How to make charAt work with UTF-8?   My database has two entities; Company and Person. A Company can have many People, but a Person must have only one Company. The table structure looks as follows. COMPANY ---------- owner PK comp_id PK c_name PERSON ---------------- owner PK, FK1 personid PK comp_id FK1 p_fname p_sname It has occurred to me that I could remove PERSON.OWNER and derive it through the foreign key; however, I can't make this change without affecting legacy code. I have modeled these as JPA-annotated classes; @Entity @Table(name = "PERSON") @IdClass(PersonPK.class) public class Person implements Serializable { @Id private String owner; @Id private String personid; @ManyToOne @JoinColumns( {@JoinColumn(name = "owner", referencedColumnName = "OWNER", insertable = false, updatable = false), @JoinColumn(name = "comp_id", referencedColumnName = "COMP_ID", insertable = true, updatable = true)}) private Company company; private String p_fname; private String p_sname; ...and standard getters/setters... } @Entity @Table(name = "COMPANY") @IdClass(CompanyPK.class) public class Company implements Serializable { @Id private String owner; @Id private String comp_id; private String c_name; @OneToMany(mappedBy = "company", cascade=CascadeType.ALL) private List people; ...and standard getters/setters... } My PersonPK and CompanyPK classes are nothing special, they just serve as a struct holding owner and the ID field, and override hashCode and equals(o). So far so good. I come across a problem, however, when trying to deal with associations. It seems if I have an existing Company, and create a Person, and associate to the Person to the Company and persist the company, the association is not saved when the Person is inserted. With EclipseLink debug logging set to FINE, the SQL query is shown as: INSERT INTO PERSON (PERSONID,OWNER,P_SNAME,P_FNAME) VALUES (?,?,?,?) bind = [5116628123,USA,Montana,Hannah,] I would have expected this to be saved, and the query to be equivalent to INSERT INTO PERSON (PERSONID,OWNER,COMP_ID,P_SNAME,P_FNAME) VALUES (?,?,?,?,?) bind = [5116628123,USA,1102F3,Montana,Hannah,] What gives? Is it incorrect to say updatable/insertable=true for one half of a composite key and =false for the other half? If I have updatable/insertable=true for both parts of the foreign key, then Eclipselink fails to startup saying that I can not use the column twice without having one set to readonly by specifying these options.

  I'm trying to run hibernate tools in an ant build to generate ddl from my JPA annotations. Ant dies on the taskdef tag. I've tried with ant 1.7, 1.6.5, and 1.6 to no avail. I've tried both in eclipse and outside. I've tried including all the hbn jars in the hibernate-tools path and not. • What is good practice in .NET system architecture design concerning multiple models and aggregates

  I'm designing a larger enterprise architecture and I'm in a doubt about how to separate the models and design those. There are several points I'd like suggestions for: - models to define - way to define models Currently my idea is to define: Core (domain) model Repositories to get data to that domain model from a database or other store Business logic model that would contain business logic, validation logic and more specific versions of forms of data retrieval methods View models prepared for specifically formated data output that would be parsed by views of different kind (web, silverlight, etc). For the first model I'm puzzled at what to use and how to define the mode. Should this model entities contain collections and in what form? IList, IEnumerable or IQueryable collections? - I'm thinking of immutable collections which IEnumerable is, but I'd like to avoid huge data collections and to offer my Business logic layer access with LINQ expressions so that query trees get executed at Data level and retrieve only really required data for situations like the one when I'm retrieving a very specific subset of elements amongst thousands or hundreds of thousands. What if I have an item with several thousands of bids? I can't just make an IEnumerable collection of those on the model and then retrieve an item list in some Repository method or even Business model method. Should it be IQueryable so that I actually pass my queries to Repository all the way from the Business logic model layer? Should I just avoid collections in my domain model? Should I void only some collections? Should I separate Domain model and BusinessLogic model or integrate those? Data would be dealt trough repositories which would use Domain model classes. Should repositories be used directly using only classes from domain model like data containers? This is an example of what I had in mind: So, my Domain objects would look like (e.g.) public class Item { public string ItemName { get; set; } public int Price { get; set; } public bool Available { get; set; } private IList<Bid> _bids; public IQueryable<Bid> Bids { get { return _bids.AsQueryable(); } private set { _bids = value; } } public AddNewBid(Bid newBid) { _bids.Add(new Bid {.... } } Where Bid would be defined as a normal class. Repositories would be defined as data retrieval factories and used to get data into another (Business logic) model which would again be used to get data to ViewModels which would then be rendered by different consumers. I would define IQueryable interfaces for all aggregating collections to get flexibility and minimize data retrieved from real data store. Or should I make Domain Model "anemic" with pure data store entities and all collections define for business logic model? One of the most important questions is, where to have IQueryable typed collections? - All the way from Repositories to Business model or not at all and expose only solid IList and IEnumerable from Repositories and deal with more specific queries inside Business model, but have more finer grained methods for data retrieval within Repositories. So, what do you think? Have any suggestions?

• More outlook VSTO help...

  I posted an article here (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1095195/how-do-i-set-permissions-on-my-vsto-outlook-add-in) and I was able to build my installer. I thought that once the installer built itself, everything would work fine. I was wrong. It works on about half of the PC's I've run the installer on. My problem is that the other half doesn't work. I'm trying to install an add-in to Outlook Office 2003. I've even gone so far as to create the steps manually by using a batch file. Nothing seems to work on these PCs and I can't find a common denominator that I can rule out or in that will make the VSTO Addin work. Here is the batch file I am using. What am I doing/not-doing wrong with this? I could really use a VSTO expert's help. Thanks!!!! EDIT I've changed the batch file and registry settings to reflect recent updates to them. In a nutshell - I have 2 classes: SMSMessage SMSSendingResponse I call an API that takes a bunch of parameters (represented by SMSMessage class) It returns an XML response. Is there some kind of easy workaround to this problem, or is it even possible by doing custom serialization via IXmlSerializable? Or should I just use XmlDocument or XmlReader/XmlWriter to process these documents?

• An "elegant" way of identifying a field?

  Hi. I'm writing a system that underlies programmer applications and that needs to detect their access to certain data. I can mostly do so with properties, like this: public class NiceClass { public int x { get; set; } } Then I go in and tweak the get and set accessors so that they handle the accesses appropriately. However this requires that the users (application programmers) define all of their data as properties. If the users want to use pre-existing classes that have "normal" fields (as opposed to properties), I cannot detect those accesses. Example: public class NotSoNiceClass { public int y; } I cannot detect accesses to y. However, I want to allow the use of pre-existing classes. As a compromise the users are responsible for notifying me whenever an access to that kind of data occurs. For example: NotSoNiceClass notSoNice; ... Write(notSoNice.y, 0); // (as opposed to notSoNice.y = 0;) Something like that. Believe me, I've researched this very thoroughly and even directly analysing the bytecode to detect accesses isn't reliable due to possible indirections, etc. I really do need the users to notify me. And now my question: could you recommend an "elegant" way to perform these notifications? (Yes, I know this whole situation isn't "elegant" to begin with; I'm trying not to make it worse ;) ). How would you do it? This is a problem for me because actually the situation is like this: I have the following class: public class SemiNiceClass { public NotSoNiceClass notSoNice { get; set; } public int z { get; set; } } If the user wants to do this: SemiNiceClass semiNice; ... semiNice.notSoNice.y = 0; They must instead do something like this: semiNice.Write("notSoNice").y = 0; Where Write will return a clone of notSoNice, which is what I wanted the set accessor to do anyway. However, using a string is pretty ugly: if later they refactor the field they'll have to go over their Write("notSoNice") accesses and change the string. How can we identify the field? I can only think of strings, ints and enums (i.e., ints again). But: We've already discussed the problem with strings. Ints are a pain. They're even worse because the user needs to remember which int corresponds to which field. Refactoring is equally difficult. Enums (such as NOT_SO_NICE and Z, i.e., the fields of SemiNiceClass) ease refactoring, but they require the user to write an enum per class (SemiNiceClass, etc), with a value per field of the class. It's annoying. I don't want them to hate me ;) So why, I hear you ask, can we not do this (below)? semiNice.Write(semiNice.notSoNice).y = 0; Because I need to know what field is being accessed, and semiNice.notSoNice doesn't identify a field. It's the value of the field, not the field itself. Sigh. I know this is ugly. Believe me ;) I'll greatly appreciate suggestions. Thanks in advance! (Also, I couldn't come up with good tags for this question. Please let me know if you have better ideas, and I'll edit them)
