Some clients I've looked so far: Blink, seems promising but the Linux variant lacks a lot of features Twinkle Latest release is ~2 years old. AFAIK the only one capable of encrypting calls using zrtp. Empathy: default tool for IM on ubuntu Ekiga Some features I'd like to see: availablity of buddies conference calls call log chat desktop sharing (Blink seems to do that for Mac) So my question is: what client software do you prefer and for what reason?

  • Which Linux book for aspiring sysadmin?

    I have a co-worker who insists that he will never buy a book unless it is considered "THE" book. So, in this vein, I thought I'd ask what the ultimate Linux book is. I wouldn't quite call myself a complete beginner since I can get around in Linux in general pretty well. But, beyond that, I'm also looking for a book with an eye towards becoming a Sys Admin someday. I saw a Junior Sys Admin position open up recently but with the requisite 2-3 years experience, I may have to wait a little while longer before I'm ready to apply for such a position. Having said all that, I'll summarize my question: What is the ultimate Linux book for someone who is ok with the basic tasks of getting around in Linux but also wants to aim towards full Sys Admin status someday?   • Configuring WPA WiFi in Ubuntu 10.10

    Hello, I am trying to configure my wireless network on my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 and am having a bit of difficulty. I am a complete Linux newb, but want to learn it, hence the reason I'm trying to set this up. Here's the vitals: It is a Gateway 600 YG2 laptop. It was previously running Windows XP, but I installed Ubuntu 10.10 in place of it (not a dual boot, I removed XP altogether). I have an old wireless card that I'm trying to resurrect. I haven't really used the card in a couple years, but it seems to still work, I just can't connect to my home's wireless network. The card is a Linksys WPC11 v2.5. When I plug it in, Ubuntu recognizes the network, but won't connect to it. My home network uses WPA encryption and the only connection type that Ubuntu's network manager is giving me is WEP and then it asks for a key -- I have no idea what that key should be. So, basically, I'm asking, is there a way I can instead connect through WPA? I've tried creating a new connection in network manager, but that won't work, it keeps falling back to the WEP connection and asking me for a key. I have tried to install the XP driver using ndiswrapper but I don't know if that's working or not. Is there a way to tell if: A) the card is working as it should B) the correct drivers are installed (again, I installed the XP one using ndiswrapper NET8180.INF, but I'm not sure what to do next) Any help would be appreciated.     Hi All, I have a few external hard drives (SSDs and Platters (SATA), is this possible that I can install Kubuntu 10.10 x64 or Ubuntu 10.10 x64 onto one of these external hard drives? My System supports booting off a usb, it will just give me a learning playground without spoiling my existing operating environment. I know I can install as Virtual machines, but installing U/Kubuntu on a External HDD and booting off it would be easier. Will be grateful for your insights....and steps to do so. Thanks

So I saved a long note, but as my finger clicked two times on the save button, the second click was on the 'delete' one ! Today Update Manager reminded me that there are some updates to install and I confirmed the action. I should had read the update list but I didn't. I can only remember there is an update about cups. After the upgrading, Update Manager requires a restart and I confirmed too. But after the restart, the computer can't start up. There are errors in the console.     I have logged into ubuntu one using a browser successfully. But using the very same login email address and password in the windows client 3.02 gets me an 'authentication failed' message. I am 100% sure I used the same email address and password. My password does not contain any non-ascii characters. Someone suggested to use an older version of the client. Where could i possibly download a complete installer?

    I have supplied the Linux SWT jar and packaged my app in Eclipse to include swt.jar inside my app's jar. When I try to run it on Ubuntu, I get the following error text (posting only cause): Caused by: java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Could not load SWT library. Reasons: no swt-pi-gtk-4234 in java.library.path no swt-pi-gtk in java.library.path /home/nifty/.swt/lib/linux/x86/libswt-pi-gtk-4234.so: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Can't load library: /home/nifty/.swt/lib/linux/x86/libswt-pi-gtk.so This indicates to me it can't load a GTK file, but anything beyond that, and I'm at a loss. I'm only using Ubuntu to test my app, so I know very little.

    Hi, My host OS is: Ubuntu 10.10. One of my virtual OS is: Ubuntu 9.04 and another one is: Ubuntu 10.04. All of these virtualisation has been completed with Virtualbox. Now, I need to replicate those two servers, one server is running in Ubuntu 9.04 and another one is running in Ubuntu 10.04. Is it possible? If yes, can you please provide me some help? So, in short words, the whole thing is: Host: Ubuntu 10.10 Guest 1: Ubuntu 9.04 Guest 2: Ubuntu 10.04 Job: Must have to run two guests at a time. Because, two LDAP of two guests need to replicate. Now, If I try to get the first Guest ( hostname: mohib-laptop ) from second Guest ( hostname: zaman-laptop ), it is not getting! Do I need to change IP address of those both Guests? Or are there anything which will make it possible?

    I am trying to set up a server on my home network which will eventually host rails. I am not great in linux server and i try to follow the prompt. I did succesfully get to a black screen which then prompts me to a username then password to then do anything ( assuming). However here what i try to do I kinda fellow his tutorial http://www.ubuntugeek.com/step-by-step-ubuntu-11-04-natty-lamp-server-setup.html but however the command where not 100% like him not in same order but same idea. Then i want to install ubuntu server with gui here the command i try with sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop Which however give me the following error Err http... inRelease w Failed to fetch ht... So been ignored if i try the desktop one i get E: unable to locate package ubuntu E: unable to locate package desktop So i am assuming i am not connected to the internet, so i try the following command sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces here the output it gives me and i know my gateway on my laptop is 192.168.1.1 address: 192.168.1.148 netmask: 255.255.255.0 network: 192.168.1.0 broadcasts: 192.168.1.255 gateway: 192.168.1.1 Btw i do not know the command to get out of vi and saving it.     Since quite some time Adobe Technologies released the Linux version of Adobe AIR to bring web applications and widgets to your desktop. Installing new applications on a Linux system is not always as easy as switching the computer on. The following instructions might be helpful to install Adobe AIR on any Linux system. First of all, get the latest installer of Adobe AIR from http://get.adobe.com/air/ - as of writing this article the file name is AdobeAIRInstaller.bin. Save the download in your preferred folder. Now, there are two ways to run the installer - visual style or console style. Visual Installation Launch your favorite or standard file manager like thunar or nautilus and browse to the folder where the AdobeAIRInstaller.bin has been saved. Right click on the file and choose 'Properties' in the context menu Set 'Execute' permissions and confirm modifications with OK Rename file into AdobeAIRInstaller Double click and follow the instructions Using the console Open a terminal like xterm Change into the directory where you stored the download Run this command:[code]chmod +x AdobeAIRInstaller.bin[/code] Now run this command:[code]sudo ./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin[/code] The normal installer will open, install it.
