    I do this in a script: read direc <<< $(basename `pwd`) and I get: Syntax error: redirection unexpected in an ubuntu machine /bin/bash --version GNU bash, version 4.0.33(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) while I do not get this error in another suse machine: /bin/bash --version GNU bash, version 3.2.39(1)-release (x86_64-suse-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 2007 Free Software Foundation, Inc.     I am new to windows C/C++ programming. I am trying to get a binary program (.exe) to run which needs VTK library. I have installed VTK from http://vtk.org/VTK/resources/software.html on 64-bit windows 7. When I run the binary program, it generates an error in a window saying that "vtkCommon.dll is missing from your computer". Should I add the folder in which VTK has been installed to the windows PATH?

    I would like to know from Java code if the machine that I'm on is running active directory or that it has active directory installed (e.g. service may be stopped). Is there a reliable registry key to inspect? This is specifically for Windows 2008. I found info on the web that mentions HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSDTC\Security\DomainControllerState, but that value is 0 on my domain controller as well as on my normal windows 7 machine!?

Its just that Windows 7 is no longer in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall Any body got any other ways to get it. Preferably in C# or using WMI? Namely: %USERPROFILE%.hgrc (is that a valid windows file name?) %USERPROFILE%\Mercurial.ini \Mercurial\Mercurial.ini C:\Mercurial\Mercurial.ini (no such directory altogether) %HOME%.hgrc (what is this directory) %HOME%\Mercurial.ini HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mercurial (no registry created) .hg\hgrc (i had to create this file manually to solve my problem)
