• how to verify browser IP for server-side web service

  I have a web service that needs to be able to verify the end-user's IP that called the server-script that is requesting the web service. Simple layout: Person A goes to Webpage B. Webpage B calls Web Service C to get some info on Person A. Web Service C won't give Webpage B the requested information without confirmation that the request originated from Person A's IP and not someone who has stolen Person A's session. I'm thinking that for a browser-based solution, the original site (Webpage B) can open an iframe that goes to the Web Service's authentication page. A key of some kind is passed to the browser which will some how indicate both the user's IP and Web Page B's IP, so that the Web Service can confirm that no one has nabbed anything. I have two challenges, but I'll stick to the more immediate one first: I'm not sure if my browser-based plan really makes sense. If someone steals the session cookie, how is the Web Service going to know? Would this cookie be held be Web Page B and thus be harder to steal? Is it a sound assumption that a cookie or key held by the server only and not the browser is safe? Also, would the web service, based on the iframe initial connection, be expecting the server/user-ip combo? What I mean is, does the session key provided via the iframe get stored by the web service and the Web Site B shows it has a match? Or is the session key more generic, meaning the web service is passed the key by Website B and the Web Service verifies that this is a valid session key based on what a valid session key should look like?

• trackPageView on Google Analytics for iPhone Not Working

  I'm trying to get Google Analytics working on an iPhone application without much luck. I've followed all the instructions on their website (google/apis/analytics/docs/tracking/mobileAppsTracking.html) and studied their sample application (google/gaformobileapps/GoogleAnalyticsIphone_0.7.tar.gz). When I run my application and go to Google Analytics' website (https://www.google.com/analytics/reporting/), the only page that is recording is /app_entry_point. I'm seeing one count in my Google Analytics detailed report once every time my app fires up. However, I have added other pages to be tracked but it's not working. Here is a sample of two pages I've added to be tracked: trackPageview:@"/calculator"; trackPageview:@"/tellafriend"; I call them from various ViewControllers in the app. In each of those view controllers I import the the GANTracker header: #import "GANTracker.h" I'll admit it: I'm an objective-c newbie. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated! Do I need to physically dispatch them to get the trackPageview working? If so, why is the /app_entry_point page the only page that is recorded by Google Analytics?

• Problem with ASP.NET Authentication

  I'm having problem with our login procedure. Some customers complain that they can't login. I can see in our logs that their login is successful and that they are redirected from the login page to the member area. But there somehow the login isn't detected and they are bounced back to the login page. I've asked customers to check if cookies are supported (http://www.html-kit.com/tools/cookietester/) but problem remains even if this test returns true. • Generating a static website from a set of content data (possibly with webgen, webby or a similar too

  My company (an engineering firm) is looking to redesign their website with some dynamic content. We have a nice portfolio of projects that we'd like to present on our site by category. To elaborate, I'd like to have a "Projects Category" menu, where you can choose a sub-project category (such as churches, schools, etc) which links to a page with images of all projects which have been tagged with that category attribute. Clicking on an image would then take you to a detailed page for that project. I have done a good bit of asp and jsp page development, but I've always worked on the front end in an enterprise environment - I've never built a production site from the back end. The advice I've gotten so far is that a full-blown CMS solution would be somewhat overkill, as we won't have a large hit count, and we'll be displaying a few hundred projects at most. One big-picture choice I appear to have - whether to dynamically generate the pages (with asp or jsp) or to use a tool to generate a set of static html pages. The tool would build the menus, project summary pages, and individual project pages based on a set of data I could provide (in the form of a database or text file.) I'm leaning towards trying to use a tool like webgen or webby to statically generate the site due to our current web hosting situation. Any thoughts on which approach is more appropriate? Is webgen or webby capable of doing what I am trying to do? Or can anyone recommend other web authoring tools better equipped to accomplish this? Thanks for any feedback!

• Workflow UI Integration - is WF a good approach?

  Somewhat similar to this question, except we haven't decided that we're going with WF yet. I'm working on designing a system that requires a series of decisions and activities on a "work object," so I naturally began to consider workflow, specifically WF. I'm aware that this is possible, but I'm not sure that WF is the best approach for this type of code, as the user interaction may be required at many different points through the entire workflow, and the workflow will drive what data entry screens are needed. We are using a WinForms/ASP.NET web forms package for UI, which is homegrown and difficult to push deployments on, so something like SharePoint integration is out of the question. Our back-end is DB2, and the workflow code (whether it's in WF or otherwise) will need to interact with that as well. I guess the bottom line is, should we look into using WF for this, or would we be better served just coding it ourselves? Can WF easily integrate data entry screens to capture information that can be used further on in the workflow?

• Android Web App : Position:fixed broken?

  Hi all, I'm in the process of developping a Web Application for mobiles. I went with web applications because to me it seems a winning situation having to develop one application that could run also on iPhone / Windows Mobile / Palm etc. I started testing today after a few days of doing concepts, ideas and designs and what I wanted to do was have a menu that sticks at the bottom of the page. Exactly like the menu on the bottom in this iPhone application screenshot : http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3094/2656904921_1c54e93b4f.jpg Using CSS, I though it would be really easy to do this. Only using position:fixed; bottom:0; would have done the trick but I have found it doesn't behave the same on mobile browsers I tried to split my page in 2 sections : 1 would be a scrollable div (for the content) and the other one would be the bottom menu. Scrollable divs also do not work on Android. I also tried using frames with no luck either. Does anyone know of any way to re-create a menu that would stick to the bottom of a page for mobile phones? • jQuery scrollTo plugin to scroll screen to div wouldn't work, why?

  Hi all: I am working on a web application, whose mock-up page can now be found at: our server If you click on the blue title "step1" and then choose the option of "delivery to address", a form will show up using jQuery ajax load. No problem for this. Click on the "venue" radio button will take you to another form, no problem for this as well. If you scroll down a bit, you can see a textarea, top of that you can see a link called "what's this?". Click on it and the textarea shall be filled with sample words. The problem is, after clicking on the link, the webpage automatically scrolls to the top section. What I want is to keep the textarea to the center of screen after link is clicked. I am trying to use a jQuery plugin called "scrollTo", which can be found here From its demo page I can tell is what I want. • Help me re-center a ModalPopup within an iframe when the iframe's parent window scrolls

  I have a web page with an iframe in it (I don't like it, but that's the way it has to be). It's not a cross-domain iframe so there's nothing to worry about there. I have written a jQuery extension that does the centering of a ModalPopup (which is called from an overridden AjaxControlToolkit.ModalPopupBehavior._layout method) based on the width and height of the iframe's parent, so that it looks centered even though the iframe is not in the center of the page. It's a lot of tricky stuff, especially since the web page I added the iframe to runs in quirks mode. Now, I've also overridden AjaxControlToolkit.ModalPopupBehavior._attachPopup, so that when the parent window resizes or scrolls, the ModalPopup inside of the iframe recenter's itself relative to the new size of the parent window. However, the same code that attaches the popup to the parent window's resize event does NOT work for the parent window's scroll event. • Help with php code - need to add condition to make one link https

  Hi, I have a wordpress blog and I need to make one of the pages secure. I have been told to make the link to that page point to https://claimpage.html as opposed to http://claimpage.html. The problem is I don't actually create the menu that links the user to the individual pages. This is done automatically by the code in the background. I think I need to put in some sort of an IF statement, saying, if the title of the page is "claim now" then use https otherwise use http.   Hi I am working on migrating the ASP.NET apllication to MVC Framework. I have implemented session timeout for InActiveUser using JQuery idleTimeout plugin. I have set idletime for 30 min as below in my Master Page. So that After the user session is timedout of 30 Min, an Auto Logout dialog shows for couple of seconds and says that "You are about to be signed out due to Inactivity" Now after this once the user is logged out and redirected to Home Page. Here i again want to show a Dialog and should stay there saying "You are Logged out" until the user clicks on it. • How to elegantly handle ReturnUrl when using UrlRewrite in ASP.NET 2.0 WebForms

  I have a folder with multiple .aspx pages that I want to restrict access to. I have added web.config to that folder with <deny users="?"/>. The problem is that ReturnUrl is auto-generated with physical path to the .aspx file while I'm using UrlRewrite. Is there a way to manipulate ReturnUrl without doing manual authentication check and redirection? Is there a way to set ReturnUrl from code-behind or from web.config? EDIT: The application is using ASP.NET 2.0 WebForms. I cannot use 3.5 routing. EDIT 2: It seems like 401 status code is never captured. It returns 302 for protected page and redirects to login page with ReturnUrl. It does not return 401 for protected page. Hmm... Interesting... Ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa480476.aspx This makes things harder... I might have to write reverse rewrite mapping rules to regex match ReturnUrl and replace it if it doesn't return 401... If it does return 401 I can either set RawUrl to Response.RedirectLocation or replace ReturnUrl with RawUrl. Anyone else have any other ideas?

• What am I doing wrong with HttpResponse content and headers when downloading a file?

  I want to download a PDF file from a SQL Server database which is stored in a binary column. There is a LinkButton on an aspx page. When I store this file "12345.pdf" to disk, the file has a size of 71523 Byte. The additional 16kB at the end of the PDF file are the HTML code of my page (as I can see when I view the file in an editor). I am confused because I was believing that ClearContent and ClearHeaders would ensure that the page content is not sent together with the file content. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks for help!

  I want to bounce users of our web site to an error page if they're using a version of Internet Explorer prior to v9. It's just not worth our time and money to support IE pre-v9. Users of all other non-IE browsers are fine and shouldn't be bounced. [2] Yes, I know that programming pros prefer sniffing out feature-support instead of browser-type but I don't feel this approach makes sense in this case. I already know that all (relevant) non-IE browsers support the features that I need and that all pre-v9 IE browsers don't. Checking feature by feature throughout the site would be a waste. [3] Yes, I know that someone trying to access the site using IE v1 (or = 20) wouldn't get 'badBrowser' set to true and the warning page wouldn't be displayed properly. That's a risk we're willing to take. [4] Yes, I know that Microsoft has "conditional comments" that can be used for precise browser version detection. IE no longer supports conditional comments as of IE 10, rendering this approach absolutely useless. Any other obvious issues to be aware of? Thanks.

• Am I correctly extracting JPEG binary data from this mysqldump?

  I have a very old .sql backup of a vbulletin site that I ran around 8 years ago. I am trying to see the file attachments that are stored in the DB. The script below extracts them all and is verified to be JPEG by hex dumping and checking the SOI (start of image) and EOI (end of image) bytes (FFD8 and FFD9, respectively) according to the JPEG wiki page. But when I try to open them with evince, I get this message "Error interpreting JPEG image file (JPEG datastream contains no image)" What could be going on here? • Forms/AD Authentication with Sharepoint

  All, I'm configuring Sharepoint to use forms authentication with LDAP/Active Directory. I'm new to Sharepoint, so if this is obvious, please point me in the right direction. Whenever I attempt to log in with a bad account or password, I get the very friendly (and correct) error message, The server could not sign you in. Make sure your user name and password are correct, and then try again. ... which implies that Sharepoint is able to communicate with AD. If I log in with a valid account, I get a page that says: (I added the grey bar to cover up the login name) Any suggestions? The account I'm logging in with is an administrator and has been granted full control in central administration. Also, interesting note: If I click the "sign in as a different user" link, and attempt to sign in using with the same credentials I just used, the site just redirects back to the login page, with no error or status message. If I then manually enter the site url, it again shows the "Error: Access Denied" page. Argh.

• Deploying .NET COM dll, getting error (0x80070002)

  I have a .NET COM assembly I am attempting to deploy to a web server (IIS 6 Win 2003). We have successfully deployed this assembly to our test environment, but the production environment is not working. The assembly is being called from a classic ASP page. Every time that page tries to initialize the assembly with “Set LTMRender = CreateObject("LTMRender.Render")”, I get an error “Error Type:, (0x80070002)”. This error seems to indicate a permission denied, or file not found type problem. I created a test app to see if the assembly works outside of the web page. The .exe initializes the assembly, and then makes a call designed to fail which in turn causes the assembly to produce a log file. It works if I run the .exe in the same folder as the assembly, but fails if I run it elsewhere. For some reason, the assembly is not accessible from outside it’s folder. I can’t figure out why this won’t work. Things I have confirmed: The deployment folder has adequate permissions. We have confirmed that the folder the assembly in installed in has the correct permissions for all the necessary user accounts. The Assembly is signed with a strong name, and was registered with regasm.exe C:_WebSites\LTMRender\LTMRender.dll /codebase /tlb:C:_WebSites\LTMRender\LTMRender.tlb. Regasm reported success. The Assembly has the attribute and relevant GUID’s set correctly. Any tips? EDIT We ran filemon against my testapp.exe and it seems to have indicated what the problem is. When testapp.exe runs in D:_websites\DocWebV2\ or D:_websites\DocWebV2\ LTMRender\ folder, it succeeds and filemon is showing D:_websites\DocWebV2\LTMRender\pinPDF.dll SUCCESS If I run my testapp.exe in the D:_websites\DocWebV2\Client – where my asp pages run, it shows D:_websites\DocWebV2\pinPDF.dll NAME NOT FOUND and then D:_websites\DocWebV2\pinPDF\pinPDF.dll FILE NOT FOUND I’m not sure why it is not looking in the correct folder if it’s under this particular folder only.

  ASP.NET 2.0 and COM Port Communication Hello Guys, I have a managed DLL which communicates with the devices attached on COM/Serial ports. The desktop Winforms application sends requests on ports and receives/stores data in memory. In Winforms app I have added a reference to DLL and I am using the methods. This works well. Now, there is a situation where I need to show this data from serial/com port on a web-page. And also users should be able to send requests to the ports using this DLL. I have made a web app in ASP.NET (2.0). Added a reference to the DLL. I am able to use this DLL, the DLL communicates on the COM upon button click on web-page and also the response is shown on web page. However I am not happy with the approach and strongly feel that this is a bad approach. Also the development server crashes after 3 -4 requests. What is the best approach in this scenario. If I use a windows service then how would my ASP.net app will communicate with the Weindows service. Or can this be easily done using WCF. I have not used WCF any time nor any of .net remoting technique. Please suggest me the best architecture in this scenario. Thank you

I'd appreciate feedback on the test, is it sufficient to test the programmers ability? What would you change if anything? Part One. What the are events fired as part of the ASP.NET Page lifecycle. What interesting things can you do at each? How does ViewState work and why is it either useful or bad? What is a common way to create web services in ASP.NET 2.0? What is the GAC? What is boxing? What is a delegate? The C# keyword .int. maps to which .NET type? Explain the difference between a Stored Procedure and a Trigger? What is an OUTER Join? What is @@IDENTITY? Part Two: You are provided with the Northwind Database and the attached DB relationship diagram. Please create a page which provides users with the following functionality. You don’t need to be too concerned with the presentation detail of the page. Select a customer from a list, and see all the orders placed by that customer. For the same customer, find all their orders which are Beverages and the quantity is more than 5. I was aware of setting the right balance of difficulty on this as there is an hour's test. I was able to complete the practical test in under 30 mins using SQLDatasource and the query designer in visual studio and the test questions, I am looking to see how they approach it logically and whether they use the tools available. • ASP.NET MVC intermittent slow response

  Problem In our production environment, system occasionally delays the page response of an ASP.NET MVC application up to 30 seconds or so, even though same page renders in 2-3 seconds most of the times. This happens randomly with any arbitrary page, and GET or POST type requests. For example, log files indicates, system took 15 seconds to complete a request for jquery script file or for other small css file it took 10 secs. Similar Problems: Random Slow Downs Production Environment: Windows Server 2008 - Standard (32-bit) - App Pool running in integrated mode. ASP.NET MVC 1.0 We have tried followings/observations: Moved the application to a stand alone web server, but, it didn't help. We didn't ever notice same issue on the server for any 'ASP.NET' application. App Pool settings are fine. No abrupt recycles/shutdowns. No cpu spikes or memory problems. No delays due to SQL queries or so. It seems as something causing delay along HTTP Pipeline or worker processor seeing the request late. Looking for other suggestions. -- Thanks

• How do I retrieve row ID from an MVCContrib HTML Grid?

  Hi, I currently have a product view page that contains an MVCContrib HTML Grid with a select link at the beginning of each row. If the select link is clicked, it takes me to a different page. My question is whether it is possible to retrieve the productID from the row that is selected and pass that to the next page. Maybe this is posible to do with a session variable but im not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. • PHP: Echo function output in function-line, not line of function call

  I have a problem with my self-coded template system. The content is inserted by Include(). Now I need to add a meta redirect to one page. I know, meta redirect is not the safest way, but I need it because of it's delay possibility. Now i'm looking for a way to influence the wrapping page (template) by the wrapped page (content). So I thought a function can do this job. <?php function test($testvar){ echo $testvar;} ?> <hr /> <?php test("testtext"); ?> Of course the text echos in the line of the function call, not in the function line. Is there a way to make the function echo in the line of the function itself? In this case above the horizontal rule, not below? • My jquery cookies are not resetting, even though am using the correct code.

  My problem is that I am trying to reset some form cookies so when someone has completed their form, they are reset so it is possible for someone else to complete the form. Simple and obvious. But However many different lines of code I put in, the cookies just do not seem to be disappearing. I have a custom UserControl with a Panel that contains a a couple Labels, both .aspx controls. .aspx: <asp:Panel runat="server"> <asp:Label ID="label1" runat="server"> </asp:Label> </asp:Panel> <asp:Panel runat="server"> <asp:Label ID="label2" runat="server"> </asp:Label> </asp:Panel> Codebehind: private readonly Object object; protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { // These are the lines that are failing // label1 and label2 are null label1.Text = object.Value1; label2.Text = object.Value2; } public ObjectRow(Object objectToDisplay) { object = objectToDisplay; } On another page, in the code behind, I create a new instance of the custom user control. protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { CustomControl control = new CustomControl(object); } The user control takes the parameter and attempts to set the labels based off of the object passed in. The labels that it tries to assign the values to are however, null. Is this an ASP.net lifecycle issue that I'm not understanding? My understanding based on the Microsoft ASP.net lifecycle page was that page controls were available after the Page_Initialization. What is the proper way to do this? Is there a better way?
