• Partition tool with console UI (as in server installation)?

  Back in 2006, Ray (3DLover) posted the same question in: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=309680 but none of the answers were really useful. Now with a little help from AskUbuntu community, I would like to repeat his question again to see if this time it can be answered correctly. So this is the question (and what I wish too): I'm looking for a UI tool for managing partitions in a console. I have installed Ubuntu Server, so I don't have X Windows at all. fdisk and sfdisk are entirely command line. parted is slightly better, but it's not really a UI. cfdisk has somewhat of a UI, but it only works on one disk at a time, and there's no advanced options like configuring LVM or RAID. Just partitioning. I love the partition tool that is available during the OS install procedure. You can partition, configure RAID's and LMV sets. It can format the partitions with several different file systems, it can set labels, mount options and it can insert your volumes into your fstab. Is this tool available as a stand-alone program? I can't find it anywhere. I think it's called parted_server, but I can't find much information about where to get it. In the past, I have run the Ubuntu install procedure just to use the partition manager that comes with it. (canceling the install after making my partition edits) Anyone help me on this? • How can I get better at explaining complex software processes to developers?

  I'm really struggling with my software specs. I am not a professional programmer but enjoy doing it for fun and made some software that I want to sell later but I'm not happy with the code quality. So I wanted to hire a real developer to rewrite my software in a more professional way so it will be maintainable by other developers in the future. I read and found some sample specs and made my own by applying their structure to my document and wanted to get my developer friend to read it and give me advice. After an hour and a half he understood exactly what I was trying to do and how I did it(my algorithms,stack,etc.). How can I get better at explaining things to developers? I add many details and explanations for everything(including working code) but I'm unsure the best way I can learn to pass detailed domain knowledge(my software applies big data, machine learning, graph theory to finance). My end goal is to get them to understand as much as possible from the document and then ask anything they do not understand, but right now it seems they need to extract alot of information from me. How can I get better at communicating domain knowledge to developers?

• How can I reduce the amount of time it takes to fully regression test an application ready for release?

  An app I work on is being developed with a modified version of scrum. If you are not familiar with scrum, it's just an alternative approach to a more traditional watefall model, where a series of features are worked on for a set amount of time known as a sprint. The app is written in C# and makes use of WPF. We use Visual C# 2010 Express edition as an IDE. If we work on a sprint and add in a few new features, but do not plan to release until a further sprint is complete, then regression testing is not an issue as such. We just test the new features and give the app a good once over. However, if a release is planned that our customers can download - a full regression test is factored in. In the past this wasn't a big deal, it took 3 or 4 days and the devs simply fix up any bugs found in the regression phase, but now, as the app is getting larger and larger and incorporating more and more features, the regression is spanning out for weeks. I am interested in any methods that people know of or use that can decrease this time. At the moment the only ideas I have are to either start writing Unit Tests, which I have never fully tried out in a commercial environment, or to research the possibilty of any UI Automation API's or tools that would allow me to write a program to perform a series of batch tests. I know literally nothing about the possibilities of UI automation so any information would be valuable. I don't know that much about Unit testing either, how complicated can the tests be? Is it possible to get Unit tests to use the UI? Are there any other methods I should consider? Thanks for reading, and for any advice in advance.

• Creating deterministic key pairs in javascript for use in encrypting/decrypting/signing messages

  So I have been searching everywhere and havn't been able to find anything with the sufficient information I need.. so Im a bit stumped on this one at the moment What I am trying to do is create a public/private key pair (like PGP) upon a users account creation, based on their passphrase and a random seed. The public key would be saved on the server, and ideally the private key would never be seen by the server whatsoever. The user could then sign in, and send a message to another user. Before the message is sent, the senders key pair would be re-generated on the fly based on their credentials (and maybe a password prompt) and used to encrypt the message. The receiver would then use their own re-generated private key to decrypt said message. The server itself should never see any plaintext passwords, private keys or readable messages. Bit unsure how on how I could go about implementing this. Iv been looking into PGP, specifically openPGP.js. The main trouble I am having is being able to regenerate the key-pair based off a specific seed. PGP seems to have a random output even if the inputs are the same. Storing the private key in a cookie or in HTML5 storage or something also isnt really an option, too unreliable. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

• How to Install Broadcom Wireless Drivers (BCM43xx)

  I'm having serious problems installing the Broadcom drivers for Ubuntu. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. I'm a user with no advance knowledge in Linux, so I would need clear explanations on make, compile, etc. Edit: For the command: "lspci | grep Network", I get the following message: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) For the command: iwconfig, i get the following: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. When i follow the following steps (from the above link), there are a NO error message at all: open the 'Synaptic Package Manager' and search for bcm uninstall the bcm-kernel-source package make sure that the firmware-b43-installer and the b43-fwcutter packages are installed type into terminal: cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl' (you may want to copy this) and see if the term blacklist bcm43xx is there if it is, type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly). reboot 'End of procedure' Before (not ubuntu 11.04), if i wanted to connect wireles, i just went to the icon at the upper side of the screen, click, showed ALL the wireless network available, and done. Now, the only options i see are: Wired Network Auto Eth0 Disconnect VPN Enable networking Connection information Edit connection. lspci -vnn | grep Network showed: Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:432b] hope above info is enough for your help.

• How do I ask screen to behave like a standard bash shell?

  Just learned about the screen command on linux - it is genius. I love it. However, the actual terminal/prompt in screen looks and behaves differently than my standard bash prompt. That is, the colors aren't the same, tab completion doesn't seem to work, etc. Is there a way I can tell screen to behave just like a normal (at least, normal as in what I am used to) bash prompt ? Additional Information I am connecting via ssh from a Mac (Terminal) to a headless linux box (Ubuntu). After logging in, I have TERM=xterm-color and when I run screen I have TERM=screen. Am going to try the suggestions below to see if I can change the $TERM value first.

• MSSQL 2008 is claiming the firewall is blocking ports even from local machine

  I was just hoping to step through a couple queries to see how the temp tables are interacting and I'm getting this message. The windows firewall on this machine is currently blocking remote debugging. Remote debugging requires that the debugging be allowed to receive information from the network.Remote debugging also requires DCOM (TCP port 135) and IPSEC (UDP 4500/UDP500) be unblocked Even when I walked over to the actual machine and tried running the debugger, I'm still getting the same message. Am I missing something or does the debugger try to run remotely even from the local machine? Since this was meant to be just a quick check, I don't need instructions on how to open up the firewall, just hoping there is a way to run the debugger locally instead.

• Window will read this particular DVD which it usually doesn't, if it spins for a longer time

  I'm unable to figure out what's wrong with my system. My computer will read this particular DVD sometimes and mostly it won't. When trying to explore the DVD, I get error "Windows can't access this disc" ( note : It doesn't says that the "disc is empty", the normal error which I generally get when I try to read a scratched DVD ). Ok now the mysterious part, I have noticed that everytime DVD spins for a longer time ( like for 1 -2 minutes), window will read it without any problem. Extra information : The DVD I'm talking about doesn't have any scratches. I tried cleaning the DVD Drive with a lens cleaning CD. DVD was burned in multisessions. My system have window 8 installed. Question I wanted to ask : What makes DVD spins for a longer period of time sometimes ? If possible how can I make window spin the DVD for longer time ? Any solution to my problem ?

• Helping to Reduce Page Compression Failures Rate

  When InnoDB compresses a page it needs the result to fit into its predetermined compressed page size (specified with KEY_BLOCK_SIZE). When the result does not fit we call that a compression failure. In this case InnoDB needs to split up the page and try to compress again. That said, compression failures are bad for performance and should be minimized.Whether the result of the compression will fit largely depends on the data being compressed and some tables and/or indexes may contain more compressible data than others. And so it would be nice if the compression failure rate, along with other compression stats, could be monitored on a per table or even on a per index basis, wouldn't it?This is where the new INFORMATION_SCHEMA table in MySQL 5.6 kicks in. INFORMATION_SCHEMA.INNODB_CMP_PER_INDEX provides exactly this helpful information. • Content light website and Google - Tell google it's a listings site (as opposed shop, reviews or restaurants)

  I have a listings style website. Due to the nature of this (listings) the site is content light. Each page is typically less that 50 words but there are many pages. The site in question has had a ton of media coverage and so has some great inbound links from places like Wired, Fast Company, Canada Broadcasting Corporation and many many other bloggers, media websites and recycle related niche authors (It's a recycling site). But Google really ignores it. Traffic from search is very very low - less than 5% of all traffic. I know that using markup you can tell Google whether your site is a restaurant, article, review, shop, local business and a few other categories (https://www.google.com/webmasters/markup-helper/u/0/). Is there a way to tell Google that my site is a listings site? I suspect, but do not know for sure, that part of the problem is that Google simply does not know what my site is? It's a crowdmap where people post curbalerts. The information is useful to people but it is presented in a short, concise way - a pin on a map, a picture and a short description. Adding anything further is not necessary for the site's intended purpose. 1st question - how best to tell the search engines what y site is - listings and not some spammy website?   I have recently setup Exhchange Server 2007. The server is smarthosting outgoing messages. Users have 'request delivery receipt' on by default their 'auditing' purposes in Outlook. They would like the original email attached to the delivery notification as was the case in Exchange Server 2003. I need this same functionality in 2007. The question has been asked here, here and here but cannot find a valid solution. Here's some information about the functionality in Exchange 2003. The question is, can i replication this functionality in 2007? Here is what a 2007 delivery message looks like: I know it's possible to customize DSN's. Can I make a custom DSN for this type of message and have the original included as an attachment? Anyone got any other ideas?

• How is it possible for SSD's drives to have such a good latency?

  First time i read some information about SSD's, i was surprised to learn they internally use NAND flash chips. This kind of memory is generally slow (low bandwidth) and have high latency while SSD's are just the opposite. But here is how it works : SSD drives increase their bandwidth by using several NAND flash chips in parallel. In other words, they do some data striping (aka RAID0) across several chips (done by the controller). What i don't understand is how SSD's drives have such a low latency, whereas they are using NAND chips? (or at least lot better than what a typical single NAND chip would do) EDIT: I think under-estimate NAND chip capabilities. USB drives, while powered by NAND's are mostly limited by USB protocol (which have a pretty high latency) and the USB controller. That explain their poor performance in some cases.

• Can I upgrade my ubuntu version and change to be primary OS after originally installing with Wibu?

  I have recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 using Wubi 12.04 and I now wish to upgrade to a full installation of Ubuntu 14.04, Before attempting to upgrade through the update center I did some research on upgrading from a Wubi installation (alongside windows) to a full installation making Ubuntu primary and only OS and found that it is in fact doable through the update center however it is just highly recommended to perform a full backup before doing so. I have now finished backing up all the data I need to worry about and began the upgrade process through the update center and received the following error: Your graphics hardware may not be fully supported in Ubuntu 14.04. Running the 'unity' desktop environment is not fully supported by your graphics hardware. You will maybe end up in a very slow environment after the upgrade.   On a Debian-based system, including Ubuntu, how can one tell which repository a package will be downloaded from, without actually beginning the download? aptitude show and apt-cache info will show the section (e.g., metapackage, base, graphics), but not the repository to which a package belongs (e.g., http://ppa.launchpad.net/mactel-support/ppa/ubuntu or http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/). When installing the package, the actual repository appears during the download (it is printed out in the "downloading from ..." output from apt and similar programs), but how can one obtain information on the repository containing the package (or a specific version of a package) without downloading and installing it first? Additionally, how can one determine the source repository for a package that is already installed?

• What should I do if I have a genius team lead which does not share? [on hold]

  Good evening, I got some uncertainties and need some advise or any experiences 'story' from you guys. The question is quite straight forward but I gonna clarify somethings in details. My Background I just graduated from my university 6 months ago. Being offer from 4 companies after I go through some interviews. Now I'm working on a banking services company, everything is consider 'ok' except I had a genius team lead which does not share enough information to let me do a task/work. Situation faced In my team, there is a "ask to know" culture. When you are going to guess or try some methods to solve the problems, I need to ask to make sure I do not do something stupid and when I asked my team lead...There're only 2 situations, 1st: I being given a strange look like: "do you know what are you do/said just now? Just follow the standards, I do not care!" (Felt humiliated) 2nd: Get the answer but my team lead suddenly in bad moods, I think thats I have waste her time for some simple questions which I do not know. Add-Ons My team lead is really a clever and a smart senior developers/programmers, sometimes she will brief through the tasks while sometimes not. Depend on her moods. There certain times I am look-down on myself and felt want to quit/resign. I'm still under-probation and had joined this company for around 4 months. I felt like I do not have the innovation skills which I used to had in university and lose my self-confidence when communicate to others.

• How to populate a private container for unit test?

  I have a class that defines a private (well, __container to be exact since it is python) container. I am using the information within said container as part of the logic of what the class does and have the ability to add/delete the elements of said container. For unit tests, I need to populate this container with some data. That date depends on the test done and thus putting it all in setUp() would be impractical and bloated -- plus it could add unwanted side effects. Since the data is private, I can only add things via the public interface of the object. This run codes that need not be run during a unit test and in some case is just a copy and paste from another test. Currently, I am mocking the whole container but somehow it does not feel that elegant a solution. Due to Python mocking frame work (mock), this requires the container to be public -- so I can use patch.dict(). I would rather keep that data private. What pattern can one use to still populate the containers without excising the public method so I have data to test with? Is there a way to do this with mock' patch.dict() that I missed?

• I need help with Grub and restoring Windows?

  I started out with Windows XP and then I installed Zorin (a sub distro of Ubuntu) and then I installed Ubuntu. This was working great. Then I installed Windows 8 on yet another partition and couldn't get into my other OSs. I asked my tech teacher at school how to fix it and she said just clear the partition that I installed Windows 8 on, so I booted onto a live version of Ubuntu and cleared the Windows 8 partition. Okay then I rebooted and it still went into Windows 8 for some reason. So I got back onto live Ubuntu and it turns out Windows 8 partition didn't clear for some reason so I did it again (and I'm positive it was the Windows 8 partition). I still couldn't fix grub but I needed something out of my XP partition so I mounted it on the live Ubuntu and now all the XP partition have are the folders 'Boot', 'Recovery', 'System Volume Information', 'temp' and the files 'bootmgr', 'BOOTNXT', 'BOOTSECT.BAK' and 'Recovery.txt'. Anybody know how to fix this or what I did wrong? Also, if I try booting from my hard drive it shows the Windows and says 'preparing automatic repair' then 'Diagnosing your PC' then restarts. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

• Display glitches running ATI propietary driver under Ubuntu 12.10

  I have a lot of problems with the Ati propietary driver (fglrx). I have an iMac (mid 2011) with a Radeon HD 6900M [1002:6720]. I did not have any problem under Ubuntu 12.04, but since I updated to 12.10, I get some annoying graphic corruption. The worst one is that sometimes the screen does not update with the new information. It happens a lot when I change between tabs in Chrome or Sublime Text. It usually gets updated when I scroll the page. Sometimes, when I type, I have to wait a little bit to view the new characters. And I get trails when I move windows too (like a part of the window). After a while, the trail disappears. I tried to install fglrx, fglrx-updates and the new beta driver downloaded from Ati (12.11 Beta 11/16/2012), with no luck. It happens the same with all of them. I tried to mess with Compiz config, but it didn't fix anything. The open source driver does not suffer this problem, but I need the performance of the propietary driver . Do you have any clue? Thanks.

• Apache Key: Which is it using?

  I'm running an Apache server on Ubuntu. When I restart it, it asks me for a pass phrase; here's what the dialog looks like: Apache/2.2.16 mod_ssl/2.2.16 (Pass Phrase Dialog) Some of your private key files are encrypted for security reasons. In order to read them you have to provide the pass phrases. Server 127.0.0.1:443 (RSA) Enter pass phrase: I've already worked out how to remove the pass phrase from the key file in question, but I can't find any information anywhere on how to determine which key file Apache is complaining about in the above dialog. I have dozens of key files on the server in question, although I don't know which ones are in active use (all I did is 'locate .pem' and ignore the false positives). Does anyone know how to track down which pem file I need to remove the passphrase from?
