• Cannot login to OpenManage Server Administrator

  After freshly installed OpenManage Server Administrator from the CD that comes with my new server, Dell PowerEdge T110, I still could not figure out how to login successfully to the application. The server is running Windows 2008 SR2 Foundation and serves as a domain controller. I access its web interface locally using Firefox 3.6. On the login page and choose local system login. OMSA user's guide seems to state that I should be able to login using an Active Directory user. I tried Administrator, my_domain\Administrator, a a few combinations with the correct password. But none of them can logged in. Does Server Administrator requires any additional treatment to the user accounts, or what are the steps I missed here?

• What is user/owner 24561?

  So, I just installed the node.js package from nodejs.org and I was poking around to see what it installed. Over in /usr/local/bin I saw this owner 24561. I see it in a few other places too. What is this? What does it mean? • Iphone/Android app – chatroom development – what framework & hosting needs?

  I have some experience regarding IPhone and Android development but I am now struggling to solve a new class of problem: apps that involve a client/server chatroom feature. That is, an app when people can exchange text over the internet, and without having the app to constantly “pull” content from the server. So that problem can’t be solved with a normal php/mysql website, there must be some kind of application running on a server that is able to send message from the server to the phone, rather than having the phone to check for new messages every 10 seconds… So I’m looking for ways to solve the different problems here: What framework should I use on the two sides (phone / server)? It should be some kind of library that doesn’t prevent me to write paid apps. It should also be possible to have the same server for the Iphone and android version of the app. What server / hosting solution do I need with what sort of features, I just have no experience regarding server application that can handle and initiate multiple connections and are hosted on hardware that is always online I tried to find resources online but couldn’t so far, either the libraries had the wrong kind of license/language or I just didn’t understand… Sometimes there were nice tutorial but for different needs such as peer2peer chat over local network… Same with the server and the hosting problem, not sure where to start really, I’m calling for help and I promise I will complete this page with notes about the experience I will get :-) Obviously the ideal would be to find a tutorial I missed that include client code, server code and a free scalable server… That being said, If I see something as good, it probably means that I have eaten the wrong kind of mushroom again… So, failing that, any pointer which might help me toward that quest, would be greatly appreciated. • Can't telnet to SQL Server

  Hi there, I have an SQL Server running on a computer, and I'm trying to access it from another computer in the same local network (potentially VPN, since it's located in a datacenter). The point is that I can't even telnet to the port in which SQL Server is listening. And yes, SQL Server is working, since I can telnet to it from my workstation. I think it's something in the host, since there's no hop between the two computers, but I don't know how to troubleshoot this. Basically I get a connection failed, when I try to telnet. What can cause such problem, since apparently there's no firewall and the server is accepting connections from other computers? Thanks in advance

• What extra packages are needed by Amarok to transcode to MP3?

  I'm using Amarok 2.6.0, on KDE version 4.9.3, on Kubuntu 12.04. I would like to be able to copy my music onto my MP3 player (in this case, my iPhone 3), but to transcode the tracks as I copy them over. However, when I right-click on the selected track, and choose "Copy to Collection" and select my iPhone, the option to transcode to MP3 is greyed out. What additional packages does Amarok need in order to enable the transcode to MP3 option?   On March 10th, 2012 the first ever PowerShell Saturday conference took place in Columbus, OH and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.  We had 100 attendees from 10 different states (the biggest surprise to me) come to see 6 speakers present on a variety of PowerShell topics: introduction, WMI, SharePoint, Active Directory, Exchange, 3rd party products and more.      A big thank you also goes out to a number of people. • Pluscom MAC address shows up but "wireless unavailable"

  I've got a pluscom pci card plugged into my desktop and although the mac address shows up in network manager, it says "Wireless unavailable". • Package manager borked with gforge

  I've been having a problem with the package manager. I seemed to have installed gforge, partially, but it keeps giving me errors whenever I install something. (Note that the thing I'm trying to install actually does get installed, but there is always an error returned). Here it is: Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.conf Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.secrets Creating /etc/gforge/local.inc Creating other includes invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 not found. dpkg: error processing gforge-db-postgresql (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100 Errors were encountered while processing: gforge-db-postgresql E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) When I try to remove it with: sudo apt-get purge gforge-common I get this: Reading package lists... • Move a sphere along the swipe?

  I am trying to get a sphere curl based on the swipe. I know this has been asked many times, but still it's yearning to be answered. I have managed to add force on the direction of the swipe and it works near perfect. I also have all the swipe positions stored in a list. Now I would like to know how can the curl be achieved. I believe the the curve in the swipe can be calculated by the Vector dot product If theta is 0, then there is no need to add the swipe. If it is not, then add the curl. • Iphone/Android app – chatroom development – what framework & hosting needs?

  I have some experience regarding IPhone and Android development but I am now struggling to solve a new class of problem: apps that involve a client/server chatroom feature. That is, an app when people can exchange text over the internet, and without having the app to constantly “pull” content from the server. So that problem can’t be solved with a normal php/mysql website, there must be some kind of application running on a server that is able to send message from the server to the phone, rather than having the phone to check for new messages every 10 seconds… So I’m looking for ways to solve the different problems here: What framework should I use on the two sides (phone / server)? It should be some kind of library that doesn’t prevent me to write paid apps. It should also be possible to have the same server for the Iphone and android version of the app. What server / hosting solution do I need with what sort of features, I just have no experience regarding server application that can handle and initiate multiple connections and are hosted on hardware that is always online I tried to find resources online but couldn’t so far, either the libraries had the wrong kind of license/language or I just didn’t understand… Sometimes there were nice tutorial but for different needs such as peer2peer chat over local network… Same with the server and the hosting problem, not sure where to start really, I’m calling for help and I promise I will complete this page with notes about the experience I will get :-) Obviously the ideal would be to find a tutorial I missed that include client code, server code and a free scalable server… That being said, If I see something as good, it probably means that I have eaten the wrong kind of mushroom again… So, failing that, any pointer which might help me toward that quest, would be greatly appreciated.   How can I share my internet connection with VPN clients using the Windows XP built-in VPN server? I want to be able to use my home internet connection (on an XP machine) from my anywhere using my laptop (Windows 7 machine). The built-in VPN server in XP and the VPN client in Windows 7 seem to do a great job of giving me access to both machines securely over the internet, but I cannot find a way to use ICS in conjunction with the incoming connection to give access to my home internet connection to my laptop remotely. Is there a way to do this? or is there an alternative VPN server software that is not limited to only local access?

• Unable to access internal network through PfSense WAN port

  Our branch office is unable to connect to our internal network for some reason. However we can connect to the branch office domain controller from behind PfSense. The following is our setup: |Branch DC - 192.168.0.101 | |Branch Firewall - 192.168.0.2 | |(Internet) | |Local Firewall - 192.168.3.1 | |PFSense WAN port - 192.168.3.100 |PFSense LAN port - 192.168.1.1 | | DC1 - 192.168.1.2|DC2 - 192.168.1.4 Branch DC can ping and connect to PFSense WebGUI on the WAN port successfully (we set this up using the PfSense documentation). DC1 and DC2 can connect outbound to the Branch DC. There seems to be a rule that prevents internal access on the WAN port. However our rules are set to allow all traffic on the LAN and WAN ports. It would be ideal to just disable the firewall altogether since we already have a firewall but when we do this, PfSense doesn't allow any internal traffic at all. I look forward to any assistance and thank you ahead of time.

• What is an elegant way to install non-repository software in 12.04?

  Perhaps I missed something when Canonical removed the "Create launcher" option from the right click menu, because I've really been missing that little guy. For me, it was the preferred way to install software that comes not in a .deb, but in a tar.gz, for example. (Note: in that tar.gz I have a folder with the compiled files, I'm NOT compiling from source) I just downloaded the new Eclipse IDE and extracted the tar.gz to my /usr folder. Now, I'd like to add it to my desktop and dash so it can be started easily. Intuitively I would right click the desktop and create a launcher. After this I'd copy the .desktop to /usr/share/applications. However, creating a launcher is not possible. My question: How would you install an already compiled tar.gz that you have downloaded from the internet? Below are a few things I've seen, but these are all more time-consuming than the right click option. If you have any better ideas, please let me know. Thanks! • How to get multiple open-source projects to use a standard way of doing something.

  Problem In the last couple weeks, I've used 3 different "repository" tools (listed in alphabetical order): gradle ivy maven I'm calling them "repository" tools because I've also used sbt -- which fortunately uses ivy to manage it's cache or local repository. Each of these tools will create it's own repository. The defaults are: ~/.m2/repository for maven ~/.gradle/cache ~/.ivy2/cache Why can't they all use the same cache? Goal I'd like to change the world so that all three build tools could use the same cache. I'm looking for advice about issues I'm likely to run into and smart ways to get around them. By "use the same cache", I do not mean "retrieve from another build tool's cache". I mean "retrieve from and store in another build tool's cache". While I could go ahead and submit issues to the three projects, I know from experience (as a developer on an open source project), that if you want something done, you're best off getting it done yourself. Also, it seems like I need to get all 3 communities on board to some degree. What is the recommended approach for getting this kind of thing done? How do I approach the different communities? Do I work on patches for the 3 different projects, or would it be better off to create my own "interface" project that deals with these issues and have the 3 tools interface with that? Is this a standards question that I need to address on that front? Lastly, if I'm missing something and this is possible (in an globally configurable fashion), then please let me know.

• MacBook Pro screen goes dark

  I've had my MacBook Pro for two years now...no problems (it has had 3rd party RAM from the get go). Today, I'm copying a particularly large VM from an External disk drive to local MacBook disk. It has about 3GB to go and I take off to do some other things and when I come back my screen is "dark". The computer is still on but I can't see anything. I forced a reboot by holding down the power button, it starts up with the "chimes", but still no screen. I've done this several times. Any ideas? Do you think the hard disk activity caused it to get too hot?

  When I launch a new Windows EC2 instance I am given a 30 gig root EBS volume. I'm trying to make sure I understand the EBS terminology and want to make sure I understand this correctly: Q: What happens to my data when a system terminates? The data stored on a local instance store will persist only as long as that instance is alive. However, data that is stored on an Amazon EBS volume will persist independently of the life of the instance. What exactly does "instance is alive" mean? If I write files to the root volume and reboot the instance will the files remain? Or do I physically have to terminate (delete) the instance for the root volume to go away? Thanks

  The server was upgraded from 10.5 from 10.6, during the upgrade the Reverse Zones were lost so I tried to recreate these but found that it's best to delete all zones, definitions and start again. So I've started again and Reverse Zones are appearing but I'm still having issues. • Hybrid USB Install Method - netboot and iso

  I was following the steps here ("Preparing Files for USB Memory Stick Booting") https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/i386/boot-usb-files.html to create a installation usb drive for 12.1. The very first paragraph of the article states "The second is to also copy a CD image onto the USB stick and use that as a source for packages, possibly in combination with a mirror." However, the only instructions mentioned regarding an iso image is to simply copy one somewhere on the drive (after its been made bootable and syslinux, vmlinuz and initrd.gz installed/copied): "you should now copy an Ubuntu ISO image onto the stick." I thought it strange there where no configuration steps for "pointing" the kernel to the iso (like a line in syslinux.cfg or a boot: option or something), but went ahead with the install anyway. I don't think the iso was used at all, it appeared that all the OS files where downloaded during the install process. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone knew how to use this local iso image in this particular installation technique (I know the image can be installed with dd, but thats a different technique), b/c I need to reinstall (I installed unity, but it's wayy to much for my little Atom based netbook) ? • Mixed network, Linux-to-Linux hostname resolution issues

  At work we have an WinSBS domain at the heart of our network, which is all Windows PCs. The domain controller is acting as a DNS for these computers. I have recently added some personal use Linux machines to the network, without joining them to the domain. I have set up Samba with "wins server" pointing to the domain controller, which lets the Windows boxes resolve the Linux hostnames just fine. I also have resolvconf set up with the domain controller as a nameserver and the local domain as a searched domain, which lets the Linux boxes resolve the Windows hostnames just fine. However, the Linux boxes will not resolve other Linux hostnames at all. Given that I don't have control over the DNS server (I am not the network admin) and that at least one of the Linux boxes is not an always-on machine and is likely to change its LAN IP frequently (via DHCP), what service am I missing to make their hostnames visible to each other?

• ASP.NET MVC WebService - Security for Industrial Android Clients

  I'm trying to design a system that will allow a bunch of Android devices to securely log into an ASP.NET MVC REST Web service. At present neither side are implemented. However there is an ASP.NET MVC website which the web service will site along side. This is currently using forms authentication. The idea will be that the Android devices will download data from the web service and then be able to work offline storing data in their own local databases, where users will be able to make updates to that data, and then syncing updates back to the main server where possible. The web service will be using HTTPS to prevent calls being intercepted and reduce the risk of calls being intercepted. The system is an industrial system and will not be in used by the general Android population. Instead only authorized Android devices will be authorized by the Web Service to make calls. As such I was thinking of using the Android devices serial number as a username and then a generated long password which the device will be able to pick up - once the device has been authorized server side. The device will also have user logins - but these will not be to log into the web service - just the device itself - since the device and user must be able to work offline. So usernames and passwords will be downloaded and stored on the devices themselves. My question is... what form of security is best setup on the web service? Should it use forms Authentication? Should the username and password just be passed in with each GET/POST call or should it start a session as I have with the website? The Android side causes more confusion. There seems to be a number of options here Spring-Android, Volley, Retrofit, LoopJ, Robo Spice which seems to use the aforementioned Spring, Retrofit or Google HttpClient. I'm struggling to find a simple example which authenticates with a forms based authentication system. Is this because I'm going about this wrong? Is there another option that would better suite this?

• Is knowledge of hacking mechanisms required for an MMO?

  Say I was planning on, in the future (not now! There is alot I need to learn first) looking to participating in a group project that was going to make a massively multiplayer online game (mmo), and my job would be the networking portion. I'm not that familiar with network programming (I've read a very basic book on PHP, MYSQL and I messed around a bit with WAMP). In the course of my studying of PHP and MYSQL, should I look into hacking? Hacking as in port scanning, router hacking, etc. In MMOs people are always trying to cheat, bots and such, but the worst scenario would be having someone hack the databases. This is just my conception of this, I really don't know. I do however understand networking fairly well, like subnetting/ports/IP's (local/global)/etc. In your professional opinion, (If you understand the topic, enlighten me) Should I learn about these things in order to counter the possibility of this happening? Also, out of the things I mentioned (port scanning, router hacking) Is there anything else that pertains to hacking that I should look into? I'm not too familiar with the malicious/Security aspects of Networking. And a note: I'm not some kid trying to learn how to hack. I just want to learn as much as possible before I go to college, and I really need to know if I need to study this or not.
