• Office 2013 OCT unhandled exception when saving .RSP

  I'm trying to prepare a deployment of office 2013 pro plus. If I deploy an existing .rsp file that was left behind by the old analyst (typing from the client): PS C: \\deploybox\software\Office2013\setup.exe /adminfile \\deploybox\software\Office2013\SWKS.MSP Things seem to deploy just fine. if I make any changes to the .rsp file by doing (all from the client): PS C: \\deploybox\software\Office2013\setup.exe /admin * Open SWKS.MSP * Make changes * Save under a different name SWKS1.MSP I get the following errorbox: Unhandled Exception: MsiGetSummaryInformation call failed. And if I try to deploy the new SWKS1.MSP, PS C: \\deploybox\software\Office2013\setup.exe /adminfile \\deploybox\software\Office2013\SWKS1.MSP it fails with the message: Path or file specified with /adminfile did not contain any customization patches that apply to this product or platform. If I even open the old known good .rsp file SWKS.MSP, and immediately save it as a new name SWKS1.MSP, making no changes, then the same thing happens. So what stupid newbie mistake am I making here? Thanks!

• Creating HTML5 Offline Web Applications with ASP.NET

  The goal of this blog entry is to describe how you can create HTML5 Offline Web Applications when building ASP.NET web applications. I describe the method that I used to create an offline Web application when building the JavaScript Reference application. You can read about the HTML5 Offline Web Application standard by visiting the following links: Offline Web Applications Firefox Offline Web Applications Safari Offline Web Applications Currently, the HTML5 Offline Web Applications feature works with all modern browsers with one important exception. You can use Offline Web Applications with Firefox, Chrome, and Safari (including iPhone Safari). Unfortunately, however, Internet Explorer does not support Offline Web Applications (not even IE 9). Why Build an HTML5 Offline Web Application? The official reason to build an Offline Web Application is so that you do not need to be connected to the Internet to use it. For example, you can use the JavaScript Reference Application when flying in an airplane, riding a subway, or hiding in a cave in Borneo. The JavaScript Reference Application works great on my iPhone even when I am completely disconnected from any network. The following screenshot shows the JavaScript Reference Application running on my iPhone when airplane mode is enabled (notice the little orange airplane):   Admittedly, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find locations where you can’t get Internet access. A second, and possibly better, reason to create Offline Web Applications is speed. An Offline Web Application must be downloaded only once. After it gets downloaded, all of the files required by your Web application (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Image) are stored persistently on your computer. Think of Offline Web Applications as providing you with a super browser cache. Normally, when you cache files in a browser, the files are cached on a file-by-file basis. For each HTML, CSS, image, or JavaScript file, you specify how long the file should remain in the cache by setting cache headers. Unlike the normal browser caching mechanism, the HTML5 Offline Web Application cache is used to specify a caching policy for an entire set of files. You use a manifest file to list the files that you want to cache and these files are cached until the manifest is changed. Another advantage of using the HTML5 offline cache is that the HTML5 standard supports several JavaScript events and methods related to the offline cache. For example, you can be notified in your JavaScript code whenever the offline application has been updated. You can use JavaScript methods, such as the ApplicationCache.update() method, to update the cache programmatically. Creating the Manifest File The HTML5 Offline Cache uses a manifest file to determine the files that get cached. In the manifest above, all of the CSS, image, and JavaScript files required by the JavaScript Reference application are listed. For example, the Default.aspx ASP.NET page, jQuery library, JQuery UI library, and several images are listed. Notice that you can add comments to a manifest by starting a line with the hash character (#). I use comments in the manifest above to group JavaScript and image files. Finally, notice that there is a NETWORK: section of the manifest. You list any file that you do not want to cache (any file that requires network access) in this section. In the manifest above, the NETWORK: section includes the URL for a WCF Service named EntryService.svc. This service is called to get the JavaScript entries displayed by the JavaScript Reference. There are two important things that you need to be aware of when using a manifest file. First, all relative URLs listed in a manifest are resolved relative to the manifest file. The URLs listed in the manifest above are all resolved relative to the root of the application because the manifest file is located in the application root. Second, whenever you make a change to the manifest file, browsers will download all of the files contained in the manifest (all of them). For example, if you add a new file to the manifest then any browser that supports the Offline Cache standard will detect the change in the manifest and download all of the files listed in the manifest automatically. If you make changes to files in the manifest (for example, modify a JavaScript file) then you need to make a change in the manifest file in order for the new version of the file to be downloaded. The standard way of updating a manifest file is to include a comment with a version number. The manifest above includes a # v30 comment. If you make a change to a file then you need to modify the comment to be # v31 in order for the new file to be downloaded. When Are Updated Files Downloaded? When you make changes to a manifest, the changes are not reflected the very next time you open the offline application in your web browser. Your web browser will download the updated files in the background. This can be very confusing when you are working with JavaScript files. If you make a change to a JavaScript file, and you have cached the application offline, then the changes to the JavaScript file won’t appear when you reload the application. The HTML5 standard includes new JavaScript events and methods that you can use to track changes and make changes to the Application Cache. You can use the ApplicationCache.update() method to initiate an update to the application cache and you can use the ApplicationCache.swapCache() method to switch to the latest version of a cached application. My heartfelt recommendation is that you do not enable your application for offline storage until after you finish writing your application code. Otherwise, debugging the application can become a very confusing experience. Offline Web Applications versus Local Storage Be careful to not confuse the HTML5 Offline Web Application feature and HTML5 Local Storage (aka DOM storage) feature. The JavaScript Reference Application uses both features. HTML5 Local Storage enables you to store key/value pairs persistently. Think of Local Storage as a super cookie. I describe how the JavaScript Reference Application uses Local Storage to store the database of JavaScript entries in a separate blog entry. Offline Web Applications enable you to store static files persistently. Think of Offline Web Applications as a super cache. Creating a Manifest File in an ASP.NET Application A manifest file must be served with the MIME type text/cache-manifest. In order to serve the JavaScript Reference manifest with the proper MIME type, I added two files to the JavaScript Reference Application project: Manifest.txt – This text file contains the actual manifest file. Manifest.ashx – This generic handler sends the Manifest.txt file with the MIME type text/cache-manifest. Here’s the code for the generic handler: using System.Web; namespace JavaScriptReference { public class Manifest : IHttpHandler { public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { context.Response.ContentType = "text/cache-manifest"; context.Response.WriteFile(context.Server.MapPath("Manifest.txt")); } public bool IsReusable { get { return false; } } } } The Default.aspx file contains a reference to the manifest. The opening HTML tag in the Default.aspx file looks like this: <html manifest="Manifest.ashx"> Notice that the HTML tag contains a manifest attribute that points to the Manifest.ashx generic handler. Internet Explorer simply ignores this attribute. Every other modern browser will download the manifest when the Default.aspx page is requested. Seeing the Offline Web Application in Action The experience of using an HTML5 Web Application is different with different browsers. When you first open the JavaScript Reference application with Firefox, you get the following warning: Notice that you are provided with the choice of whether you want to use the application offline or not. Browsers other than Firefox, such as Chrome and Safari, do not provide you with this choice. Chrome and Safari will create an offline cache automatically. If you click the Allow button then Firefox will download all of the files listed in the manifest. You can view the files contained in the Firefox offline application cache by typing about:cache in the Firefox address bar: You can view the actual items being cached by clicking the List Cache Entries link: The Offline Web Application experience is different in the case of Google Chrome. You can view the entries in the offline cache by opening the Developer Tools (hit Shift+CTRL+I), selecting the Storage tab, and selecting Application Cache: Notice that you view the status of the Application Cache. In the screen shot above, the status is UNCACHED which means that the files listed in the manifest have not been downloaded and cached yet. The different possible values for the status are included in the HTML5 Offline Web Application standard: UNCACHED – The Application Cache has not been initialized. IDLE – The Application Cache is not currently being updated. CHECKING – The Application Cache is being fetched and checked for updates. DOWNLOADING – The files in the Application Cache are being updated. UPDATEREADY – There is a new version of the Application. OBSOLETE – The contents of the Application Cache are obsolete. Summary In this blog entry, I provided a description of how you can use the HTML5 Offline Web Application feature in the context of an ASP.NET application. I described how this feature is used with the JavaScript Reference Application to store the entire application on a user’s computer. By taking advantage of this new feature of the HTML5 standard, you can improve the performance of your ASP.NET web applications by requiring users of your web application to download your application once and only once. Furthermore, you can enable users to take advantage of your applications anywhere -- regardless of whether or not they are connected to the Internet.

• SQL SERVER – Concurrency Basics – Guest Post by Vinod Kumar

Working on various versions from SQL Server 7.0, Oracle 7.3 and other database technologies – he now works with the Microsoft Technology Center (MTC) as a Technology Architect. Let us read the blog post in Vinod’s own voice. Learning is always fun when it comes to SQL Server and learning the basics again can be more fun. I did write about Transaction Logs and recovery over my blogs and the concept of simplifying the basics is a challenge. In the real world we always see checks and queues for a process – say railway reservation, banks, customer supports etc there is a process of line and queue to facilitate everyone. Shorter the queue higher is the efficiency of system (a.k.a higher is the concurrency). Every database does implement this using checks like locking, blocking mechanisms and they implement the standards in a way to facilitate higher concurrency. In this post, let us talk about the topic of Concurrency and what are the various aspects that one needs to know about concurrency inside SQL Server. Let us learn the concepts as one-liners: Concurrency can be defined as the ability of multiple processes to access or change shared data at the same time. The greater the number of concurrent user processes that can be active without interfering with each other, the greater the concurrency of the database system. Concurrency is reduced when a process that is changing data prevents other processes from reading that data or when a process that is reading data prevents other processes from changing that data. Concurrency is also affected when multiple processes are attempting to change the same data simultaneously. Two approaches to managing concurrent data access: Optimistic Concurrency Model Pessimistic Concurrency Model Concurrency Models Pessimistic Concurrency Default behavior: acquire locks to block access to data that another process is using. Assumes that enough data modification operations are in the system that any given read operation is likely affected by a data modification made by another user (assumes conflicts will occur). Avoids conflicts by acquiring a lock on data being read so no other processes can modify that data. Also acquires locks on data being modified so no other processes can access the data for either reading or modifying. Readers block writer, writers block readers and writers. Optimistic Concurrency Assumes that there are sufficiently few conflicting data modification operations in the system that any single transaction is unlikely to modify data that another transaction is modifying. Default behavior of optimistic concurrency is to use row versioning to allow data readers to see the state of the data before the modification occurs. Older versions of the data are saved so a process reading data can see the data as it was when the process started reading and not affected by any changes being made to that data. Processes modifying the data is unaffected by processes reading the data because the reader is accessing a saved version of the data rows. Readers do not block writers and writers do not block readers, but, writers can and will block writers. Transaction Processing A transaction is the basic unit of work in SQL Server. Transaction consists of SQL commands that read and update the database but the update is not considered final until a COMMIT command is issued (at least for an explicit transaction: marked with a BEGIN TRAN and the end is marked by a COMMIT TRAN or ROLLBACK TRAN). Transactions must exhibit all the ACID properties of a transaction. ACID Properties Transaction processing must guarantee the consistency and recoverability of SQL Server databases. Ensures all transactions are performed as a single unit of work regardless of hardware or system failure. A – Atomicity C – Consistency I – Isolation D- Durability Atomicity: Each transaction is treated as all or nothing – it either commits or aborts. Consistency: ensures that a transaction won’t allow the system to arrive at an incorrect logical state – the data must always be logically correct.  Consistency is honored even in the event of a system failure. Isolation: separates concurrent transactions from the updates of other incomplete transactions. SQL Server accomplishes isolation among transactions by locking data or creating row versions. Durability: After a transaction commits, the durability property ensures that the effects of the transaction persist even if a system failure occurs. If a system failure occurs while a transaction is in progress, the transaction is completely undone, leaving no partial effects on data. Transaction Dependencies In addition to supporting all four ACID properties, a transaction might exhibit few other behaviors (known as dependency problems or consistency problems). Lost Updates: Occur when two processes read the same data and both manipulate the data, changing its value and then both try to update the original data to the new value. The second process might overwrite the first update completely. Dirty Reads: Occurs when a process reads uncommitted data. If one process has changed data but not yet committed the change, another process reading the data will read it in an inconsistent state. Non-repeatable Reads: A read is non-repeatable if a process might get different values when reading the same data in two reads within the same transaction. This can happen when another process changes the data in between the reads that the first process is doing. Phantoms: Occurs when membership in a set changes. It occurs if two SELECT operations using the same predicate in the same transaction return a different number of rows. Isolation Levels SQL Server supports 5 isolation levels that control the behavior of read operations. Read Uncommitted All behaviors except for lost updates are possible. Implemented by allowing the read operations to not take any locks, and because of this, it won’t be blocked by conflicting locks acquired by other processes. The process can read data that another process has modified but not yet committed. When using the read uncommitted isolation level and scanning an entire table, SQL Server can decide to do an allocation order scan (in page-number order) instead of a logical order scan (following page pointers). If another process doing concurrent operations changes data and move rows to a new location in the table, the allocation order scan can end up reading the same row twice. Also can happen if you have read a row before it is updated and then an update moves the row to a higher page number than your scan encounters later. Performing an allocation order scan under Read Uncommitted can cause you to miss a row completely – can happen when a row on a high page number that hasn’t been read yet is updated and moved to a lower page number that has already been read. Read Committed Two varieties of read committed isolation: optimistic and pessimistic (default). Ensures that a read never reads data that another application hasn’t committed. If another transaction is updating data and has exclusive locks on data, your transaction will have to wait for the locks to be released. Your transaction must put share locks on data that are visited, which means that data might be unavailable for others to use. A share lock doesn’t prevent others from reading but prevents them from updating. Read committed (snapshot) ensures that an operation never reads uncommitted data, but not by forcing other processes to wait. SQL Server generates a version of the changed row with its previous committed values. Data being changed is still locked but other processes can see the previous versions of the data as it was before the update operation began. Repeatable Read This is a Pessimistic isolation level. Ensures that if a transaction revisits data or a query is reissued the data doesn’t change. That is, issuing the same query twice within a transaction cannot pickup any changes to data values made by another user’s transaction because no changes can be made by other transactions. However, this does allow phantom rows to appear. Preventing non-repeatable read is a desirable safeguard but cost is that all shared locks in a transaction must be held until the completion of the transaction. Snapshot Snapshot Isolation (SI) is an optimistic isolation level. Allows for processes to read older versions of committed data if the current version is locked. Difference between snapshot and read committed has to do with how old the older versions have to be. It’s possible to have two transactions executing simultaneously that give us a result that is not possible in any serial execution. Serializable This is the strongest of the pessimistic isolation level. Adds to repeatable read isolation level by ensuring that if a query is reissued rows were not added in the interim, i.e, phantoms do not appear. Preventing phantoms is another desirable safeguard, but cost of this extra safeguard is similar to that of repeatable read – all shared locks in a transaction must be held until the transaction completes. In addition serializable isolation level requires that you lock data that has been read but also data that doesn’t exist. Ex: if a SELECT returned no rows, you want it to return no. rows when the query is reissued. This is implemented in SQL Server by a special kind of lock called the key-range lock. Key-range locks require that there be an index on the column that defines the range of values. If there is no index on the column, serializable isolation requires a table lock. Gets its name from the fact that running multiple serializable transactions at the same time is equivalent of running them one at a time. • The 'desktops' move to Oracle

  The move to Oracle has been most interesting.  Here we have an organization who are interested in what they are interested in.  Not so much in things that aren't 'core'. The legacy Sun desktop products are things that Oracle is interested in.  To that end there are some changes coming to policies and products - and from my perspective they are all good. Very good. One of the changes to the Product suite is that we are now referred to as part of the Virtualization team, falling under Oracle's Chief Corporate Archtiect, Edward Screven.  Edward says that the Products were a 'gem' found inside the great pile of stuff that was Sun. Another change is that while StarOffice/Open Office has been certainly endorsed by Oracle, and it also falls under Edward's purview, and here has been a push on to use it as opposed to... well... you know.    It is not, however, part of the Virtualization team's product suite any more. There are some other really interesting changes coming that you will hear about quite soon.  The big message for today, though, is that Sun Rays, Secure Global Desktop, VirtualBox, and Oracle VDI software are all still alive and kicking and moving forward.  Infact, at the Oracle earnings call last week, Charles Phillips announced more significant wins with Sun Rays in the US Federal Governmnet space.  He could have talked about all kinds of legacy Sun products, but chose to mention Sun Rays in the first Quarterly statement since the acquisition of Sun - you should see this as a very good sign indeed. • ASP.NET MVC Framework

   MVC is a design pattern. A reusable "recipe" for constructing your application. Generally, you don't want your user interface code and data access code to be mixed together, it makes changing either one more difficult. By placing data access code into a "Model" object and user interface code into a "View" object, you can use a "Controller" object to act as a go-between, sending messages/calling methods on the view object when the data changes and vice versa. Model-view-controller (MVC) is an architectural pattern used in software engineering. In complex computer applications that present a large amount of data to the user, a developer often wishes to separate data (model) and user interface (view) concerns, so that changes to the user interface will not affect data handling, and that the data can be reorganized without changing the user interface. The model-view-controller solves this problem by decoupling data access and business logic from data presentation and user interaction, by introducing an intermediate component: the controller.Model:    The domain-specific representation of the information that the application operates. Domain logic adds meaning to raw data (e.g., calculating whether today is the user's birthday, or the totals, taxes, and shipping charges for shopping cart items).    Many applications use a persistent storage mechanism (such as a database) to store data. MVC does not specifically mention the data access layer because it is understood to be underneath or encapsulated by the Model.View:    Renders the model into a form suitable for interaction, typically a user interface element. Multiple views can exist for a single model for different purposes.Controller:    Processes and responds to events, typically user actions, and may invoke changes on the model.

• Refactoring in domain driven design

  I've just started working on a project and we're using domain-driven design (as defined by Eric Evans in Domain-Driven Design: Tackling Complexity in the Heart of Software. I believe that our project is certainly a candidate for this design pattern as Evans describes it in his book. I'm struggling with the idea of constantly refactoring. I know refactoring is a necessity in any project and will happen inevitably as the software changes. However, in my experience, refactoring occurs when the needs of the development team change, not as understanding of the domain changes ("refactoring to greater insight" as Evans calls it). I'm most concerned with breakthroughs in understanding of the domain model. I understand making small changes, but what if a large change in the model is necessary? What's an effective way of convincing yourself (and others) you should refactor after you obtain a clearer domain model? After all, refactoring to improve code organization or performance could be completely separate from how expressive in terms of the ubiquitous language code is. Sometimes it just seems like there's not enough time to refactor. Luckily, SCRUM lends it self to refactoring. The iterative nature of SCRUM makes it easy to build a small piece and change and it. But over time that piece will get larger and what if you have a breakthrough after that piece is so large that it will be too difficult to change? Has anyone worked on a project employing domain-driven design? If so, it would be great to get some insight on this one. I'd especially like to hear some success stories, since DDD seems very difficult to get right. Thanks!

  With the availability of Oracle UPK 3.6.1 and Enablement Service Pack 1 for Oracle UPK 3.6.1 (Oracle Support login required for both), there are quite a few changes for content admins to absorb. In addition to the support added for dozens of application releases, patches and new target applications, we've also added features to make implementing and using In-Application Support even easier. First, the old Help Menu Integration Guides have been updated and combined into a single In-Application Support Guide. If you integrate UPK content for user assistance, or if you're interested in doing so, read the new guide! It covers all the integration steps, including a section on the new In-Application Support Configuration Utility. If you've integrated content in multiple languages, or if you've ever had to make configuration changes for UPK Help Integration, then you know how cumbersome it was to manually edit javascript files. No longer! The Player now includes a configuration utility that provides a web browser interface for setting all In-Application Support options. From the main screen, you see a list of applications covered by the published content. Clicking on an application name takes you to the edit configuration screen where you can set all Player options for that application. No more digging through the Player folders to find the right javascript file to edit. No complicated javascript syntax to make changes. And with Enablement Service Pack 1 we've added a new feature we're calling the Tabbed Gateway. The Tabbed Gateway is a top-level navigation bar for Help Integration. And all tabs, links, and text are controlled with the Configuration Utility... I think the Tabbed Gateway is a really cool and exciting feature for content launch. • Exchange 2010 - No Push notification when when deleting emails from Outlook

  Hi I'm setting up a Exchange 2010 server for our test environment. I'm running Windows 2008R2 enterprise on this machine. Iv'e also installed all updates available for windows and exchange 2010 including rollup 1 and 2 for exchange that include bugfixes regarding push notifications. My problem is when deleting mail or marking mail as read don't trigger a push notification. The happens when I use webgui, mobile phone and Outlook 2007. When deleting a email in Outlook 2007 the changes get sent to the server since the changes are visible in webgui but not on mobile phone. I get push notifications when I get new emails since new emails appear instantly on the mobile phone. Is this normal behaviour on Exchange 2010? For me it seems a bit funny. If i force sync on mobile phone the changes appear. Iv'e tested this on both iphone and HTC HD2(Running Windows Mobile 6.5) with same results.

How could I still maintain hardening of network security without disturbing Wi-fi downloading speed ?

  I’ve playing around with Lucene.NET and trying to get a feeling of what was required to develop and implement a full business application using it. As you would imagine, many things are required for you to implement a robust solution for indexing content and searching it afterwards. Lucene is a great and robust solution for indexing content. It offers fast and performance enhanced search engine library available in Java and .NET. You will want to use this library in many particular scenarios: In Windows Azure, to support Full Text Search (a functionality not currently supported by SQL Azure) When storing files outside or not managed by your database (like in large document storage solutions that uses File System) When Full Text Search is not really what you need Lucene is more than a Full Text Search solution. It has several analyzers that let you process and search content in different ways (decomposing sentences, deriving words, removing articles, etc.). When deciding to implement indexing using Lucene, you will need to take into account the following: How content is to be indexed by Lucene and when. Using a service that runs after a specific interval Immediately when content changes When content is to available for searching / Availability of indexed content (as in real time content search) Immediately when content changes = near real time searching After a few minutes.. Ease of maintainability and development Some Technical Concerns.. When indexing content, indexes are locked for writing operations by the Index Writer. This means that Lucene is best designed to index content using single writer approach. When searching, Index Readers take a snapshot of indexes. This has the following implications: Setting up an index reader is a costly task. Your are not supposed to create one for each query or search. A good practice is to create readers and reuse them for several searches. The latter means that even when the content gets updated, you wont be able to see the changes. You will need to recycle the reader. In the second part of this post we will review some alternatives and design considerations.

  Hi All, I'm having problem with my GPO changes, that I'd like to force to my terminal server users here's what I've done: I've made some necessary changes in one of the Domain Controllers to disable the GPO which applies to my Terminal Server user OU and then I go to the Terminal Server mstsc /admin console to perform the GPo refresh by using /force parameter, however I got this error instead: C:\Documents and Settings\Adminisratorgpupdate /force Refreshing Policy... User Policy Refresh has not completed in the expected time. Exiting... User Policy Refresh has completed. Computer Policy Refresh has not completed in the expected time. Exiting...   Hi, I have an Access database in a computer and I want to access it from other computer in the network. so I made mapped drive and created Linked Tables, then Imported all the objects (forms, queries, reports). when I open access database in the second computer and make any changes in using the forms non of the changes are affected in the main computer (supposedly server) and vise-versa. what am I missing? if this way will not work how can I access the Access database from other computer in the network and be able to use all the objects and make changes in it? hint: Access Version at main computer is 2003 and client pc 2007, will it effect?

• Patterns & Practices: Composite Services CTP2 is Public

  Finally the last CTP and pre-release version for the Composite Services is out. There were quite a lot of changes since CTP1. We added many new samples and many enhancements to the repository (DB) which is now called Inventory in sync with SOA Patterns. Here is a brief list of the main changes according to the included documentations.   Changes and additions in this release This CTP release contains reusable source code and samples to illustrate implementation for the following patterns and scenarios: Repair and Resubmit – this pattern is implemented in ESB Toolkit 2.0 as part of Exception Management Framework (EMF). This code drop provides code sample how to implement this pattern for Windows AppFabric workflow service, using Exceptions Web Service and workflow activities to create fault message, which will be created in EMF database.  Analytic Tracing – this code drop contains reusable code and samples for implementing ETW tracing: event collector service and database that store collected events. This capability may be used for scenarios that need flexibility on how collected events are decoded and processed via extensibility points you can configure and implement:  plugins and event decoders with leveraging ETW tracing capabilities provided by the event collector service.   Inventory Centralization – this code drop contains service catalog database, web services and samples to show how to implement Metadata Centralization, Schema Centralization and Policy Centralization patterns.  Service Virtualization – we included sample for implementing this pattern using WCF routing service( which is part of .NET framework) and service metadata centralization capabilities to define routing service metadata in service catalog. Termination Notification – we included sample for implementing this pattern using sample WCF service and policy centralization capabilities provided by this CTP release.   You will also find many new videos that will be uploaded to the home page any time soon. • Continuous Integration using Docker

  One of the main advantages of Docker is the isolated environment it brings, and I want to leverage that advantage in my continuous integration workflow. A "normal" CI workflow goes something like this: Poll repository for changes Pull from repository Install dependencies Run tests In a Dockerized workflow, it would be something like this: Poll repository for changes Pull from repository Build docker image Run docker image as container Run tests Kill docker container My problem is with the "run tests" step: since Docker is an isolated environment, intuitively I would like to treat it as one; this means the preferred method of communication are sockets. However, this only works well in certain situations (a webapp, for example). When testing different kind of services (for example, a background service that only communicated with a database), a different approach would be required. What is the best way to approach this problem? Is it a problem with my application's design, and should I design it in a more TDD, service-oriented way that always listens on some socket? Or should I just give up on isolation, and do something like this: Poll repository for changes Pull from repository Build docker image Run docker image as container Open SSH session into container Run tests Kill docker container SSH'ing into the container seems like an ugly solution to me, since it requires deep knowledge of the contents of the container, and thus break the isolation. I would love to hear SO's different approaches to this problem.

• What should be taken into consideration when deploying Windows 8 in a domain environment?

  Edit: Reformulating the question: We have ordered new laptops but before they arrive, our development team is trying to decide whether to install Windows 8 or stick with Windows 7. We have already tested on isolated machines, but we have not yet been allowed to add the machines to the domain. Before we approach the networking group to discuss adding Windows 8 machines to the domain, we need more information on what changes / issues to expect in moving from Windows 7. Are there any aspects we should consider that are specific to Windows 8 clients? Thus far, I've gotten the following feedback: Windows Administrative Shares are disabled New set of Group Policy templates Changes to proxy server settings Additional items along these lines would be helpful. We're not looking for items related to Windows GUI changes, but instead primarily items related to having the machine live and be used on the domain.

• What is the correct term for - server/client database sync via API?

  Forgive the vague question title. I've been programming mobile apps for 3 years now, and I've got a little too far from the web services and server side code then I probably should have. Anyway, I'm doing a personal project now and I want to create an web API for it. One of my requirements is to check for updates from my app, so I would send a timestamp to the API. I've used many APIs that my clients prepared for me and only now am I appreciating their work ! What is the term or technique used to create an API backed by a database which tracks changes via dates/timestamps, basically an effective way for me to query changes occurring since a timestamp. Simply put, I want that my app can call my API in order to sync new data and changed data from the server, to the app. The app would only have a timestamp of the last time it synced with the server. Would I have a log table for each data table in my database which adds a record for each change? Then I could query all changes with a timestamp superior to the one passed to the API. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this?
