I'm quite confused about the basic concepts of a Hash table. If I were to code a hash how would I even begin? What is the difference between a Hash table and just a normal array?
Basically if someone answered this question I think all my questions would be answered:
If I had 100 randomly generated numbers (as keys), how would I implement a hash table and why would that be advantageous over an array?
Psuedo-code or Java would be appreciated as a learning tool...
Guys just finished reading one of my college books about threads in Java and I was informed that lock - what ever it is, is in Object class. So it looks like even though I'm not using threaded classes my objects will be heavier because of that? Don't you think that it's a bit annoying and unfair to expect from anyone to pay for something s/he have not intention of using?
Thanks
In Eclipse, the Java Method Override Indicator is the little upwards arrow next to a method in the Type Hierarchy view.
A solid arrow means a method overrides an existing method lower in the hierarchy.
What does the hollow arrow mean?
Do annotations effect either arrow?

Is there any reason behind using this date as standard for time manipulation? I have seen this standard in Java as well as in Python. These two languages I am aware of. Is other popular languages also follows the same standard?

If I have no to little experience in either of them, but know enough Java and Ruby to be comfortable, is one framework harder to learn than the other? Is one easier to use for the beginner on these?
I know it is hard to answer. Just looking for general thoughts on it.
Hi - I need to write some junit tests on java code that calls Math.random(). I know that I can set the seed if I was instantiating my own Random object to produce repeatable results. Is there a way to do this also for Math.random() ?
I created a Java LinkedBlockingQueue like new LinkedBlockingQueue(1) to limit the size of the queue to 1. However, in my testing, this seems to be ignored and there is often several things in the queue at any given time. Why is this?
From the java sources, it look like to drops into native code. Is the cost roughly equivalent to a volatile read or does it need to acquire a lock of some type?
I'm designing a web application.
I was wondering if it was feasible to design a php front end (using some php framework e.g. CakePHP), which stores and retrieves data to display to the user.
Then develop a java backend which listens to the database for changes, and depending on what was changed, performs some actions and updates the database.
Any thoughts on this type of implementation would be appreciated.

Ok this situation is a bit difficult. But I am trying to embed a Java Jar into a C# form. Not as a new window or new process.
The Jar will be a game that uses the LWJGL library.
The C# Form will be a "wrapper" for it with tools and more.
Anyone have any ideas? Is this even possible?
Most people have heard of a Content Management Systems. However, what basic features should an application contain so it can be considered as a true CMS? Also, what Java frameworks could be used to make one?
I am interacting with a third party application using it's API, and would like to move it to the front of focus (so that it is on top of all other open windows) when a user performs a certain action. While I can move my application up and down in the hierarchy pretty easily, there doesn't appear to be a way to interact with other windows. Is it possible to move another program's window to front with Java?

I want to compare to variables, both of type T extends Number. Now I want to know which of the two variables is greater than the other or equal. Unfortunately I don't know the exact type yet, I only know that it will be a subtype of java.lang.Number.
How can I do that?
Thanks!
According to the Release Notes:
All user request have an
X-AppEngine-Country header which
contains the ISO-3166-1 alpha-2
country code for the user, based on
the IP address of the client request.
My app is running on localhost with the 1.5.1 Java release which contains the X-AppEngine-Country header but I don't seem to be receiving any value for this header in my requests.
Do I have to deploy the app to a production instance to test this feature?
