  • CentOS server. What does it mean when the total used RAM does not equal the sum of RES?

    I'm having a problem with a virtual hosted server running CentOS. In the past month a process (java based) that had been running fine started having problems getting memory when the JVM was started. One strange thing I've noticed is that when I start the process, the PID says it is using 470mb of RAM while the 'used' memory immediately drops by over a 1GB. If I run 'top', the total RES used across all processes falls short of the 'used' listed at the top by almost 700mb. The support person says this means I have a memory leak with my process. I don't know what to believe because I would expect a memory leak to simply waste the memory the process is allocated not to consume additional memory that doesn't show up using 'top'. I'm a developer and not a server guy so I'm appealing to the experts. To me, if the total RES memory doesn't add up to the total 'used' it indicates that something is wrong with my virtual server set-up. Would you also suspect a memory leaking java process in this case? If I use free before: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2097152 149264 1947888 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 149264 1947888 Swap: 0 0 0 free after: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2097152 1094116 1003036 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 1094116 1003036 Swap: 0 0 0 So it looks as though the process is using (or causing to be used) nearly 1GB of RAM. Since the process (based on top is only using 452mb, does that mean that the kernal is all of a sudden using an additional 500mb?

    Since the last security changes in Java 7u40, it is required to sign a JNLP file. This can either be done by adding the final JNLP in JNLP-INF/APPLICATION.JNLP, or by providing a template JNLP in JNLP-INF/APPLICATION_TEMPLATE.JNLP in the signed main jar. The first way works well, but we would like to allow to pass a previously unknown number of runtime arguments to our application. I am trying to unit test Proxy.Close() method but as the proxy is constructed using the abstract base class ClientBast which has the ICommunication interface, my unit test is failing as the internal infrastructure of the class is absent in the mock object. Any good ways with code samples would be greatly appreciated.

  • Integrating POP3 client functionality into a C# application?

    I have a web application that requires a server based component to periodically access POP3 email boxes and retrieve emails. The service then needs to process the emails which will involve: Validating the email against some business rules (does it contain a valid reference in the subject line, which user sent the mail, etc.) Analysing and saving any attachments to disk Take the email body and attachment details and create a new item in the database Or update an existing item where the reference matches the incoming email subject line What is the best way to approach this? I really don't want to have to write a POP3 client from scratch, but I need to be able to customize the processing of emails. Ideally I would be able to plug in some component that does the access and retrieval for me, returning arrays of attachments, body text, subject line, etc. ready for my processing... [ UPDATE: Reviews ] OK, so I have spent a fair amount of time looking into (mainly free) .NET POP3 libraries so I thought I'd provide a short review of some of those mentioned below and a few others: Pop3.net - free - works OK, very basic in terms of functionality provided. This is pretty much just the POP3 commands and some base64 encoding, but it's very straight forward - probably a good introduction Pop3 Wizard - commercial / some open source code - couldn't get this to build, missing DLLs, I wouldn't bother with this C#Mail - free - works well, comes with Mime parser and SMTP client, however the comments are in Japanese (not a big deal) and it didn't work with SSL 'out of the box' - I had to change the SslStream constructor after which it worked no problem OpenPOP - free - hasn't been updated for about 5 years so it's current state is .NET 1.0, doesn't support SSL but that was no problem to resolve - I just replaced the existing stream with an SslStream and it worked. Comes with Mime parser. Of the free libraries, I'd go for C#Mail or OpenPOP. I looked at a few commercial libraries: Chillkat, Rebex, RemObjects, JMail.net. Based on features, price and impression of the company I would probably go for Rebex and may in the future if my requirements change or I run into production issues with either of C#Mail or OpenPOP.   • Mercurial client error 255 and HTTP error 404 when attempting to push large files to server

    Problem: When attempting to push a changeset that contains 6 large files (.exe, .dmg, etc) to my remote server my client (MacHG) is reporting the error: "Error During Push. Mercurial reported error number 255: abort: HTTP Error 404: Not Found" What does the error even mean?! The only thing unique (that I can tell) about this commit is the size, type, and filenames of the files. How can I determine which exact file within the changeset is failing? How can I delete the corrupt changeset from the repository? Someone reported using "mq" extensions, but it looks overly complicated for what I'm trying to achieve. Background: I can push and pull the following: source files, directories, .class files and a .jar file to and from the server, using both MacHG and toirtoise HG. I successfully committed to my local repository the addition for the first time the 6 large .exe, .dmg etc installer files (about 130Mb total). In the following commit to my local repository, I removed ("untracked" / forget) the 6 files causing the problem, however the previous (failing) changeset is still queued to be pushed to the server (i.e. my local host is trying to push the "add" and then the "remove" to the remote server - and keep aligned with the "keep everything in history" philosophy of the source control system). I can commit .txt .java files etc using TortoiseHG from Windows PCs. I haven't actually testing committing or pushing the same large files using TortoiseHG. Please help! Setup: Client applications = MacHG v0.9.7 (SCM 1.5.4), and TortoiseHG v1.0.4 (SCM 1.5.4) Server = HTTPS, IIS7.5, Mercurial 1.5.4, Python 2.6.5, setup using these instructions: http://www.jeremyskinner.co.uk/mercurial-on-iis7/ In IIS7.5 the CGI handler is configured to handle ALL verbs (not just GET, POST and HEAD).   • JLabel animation in JPanel

    After scratching around I found that it's best to implement a custom image component by extending a JLabel. So far that has worked great as I can add multiple "images" (jlabels without the layout breaking. I just have a question that I hope someone can answer for me. I noticed that in order to animate JLabels across the screen I need to setlayout(null); and setbounds of the component and then to animate eventually setlocation(x,y);. Is this a best practice or a terrible way to animate a component? I plan on eventually making an animation class but I don't want to do so and end up having to chuck it.     I am creating UTF16 text files with Matlab, which I am later reading in using Java. In Matlab, I open a file called fileName and write to it as follows: fid = fopen(fileName, 'w','n','UTF16-LE'); fprintf(fid,"Some stuff."); In Java, I can read the text file using the following code: FileInputStream fileInputStream = new FileInputStream(fileName); Scanner scanner = new Scanner(fileInputStream, "UTF-16LE"); String s = scanner.nextLine(); Here is the hex output: Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F 10 11 12 13 00000000 73 00 6F 00 6D 00 65 00 20 00 73 00 74 00 75 00 66 00 66 00 s.o.m.e. .s.t.u.f.f. The above approach works fine. But, I want to be able to write out the file using UTF16 with a BOM to give me more flexibility so that I don't have to worry about big or little endian. In Matlab, I've coded: fid = fopen(fileName, 'w','n','UTF16'); fprintf(fid,"Some stuff."); In Java, I change the code to: FileInputStream fileInputStream = new FileInputStream(fileName); Scanner scanner = new Scanner(fileInputStream, "UTF-16"); String s = scanner.nextLine(); In this case, the string s is garbled, because Matlab is not writing the BOM. I can get the Java code to work just fine if I add the BOM manually. With the added BOM, the following file works fine. Addendum I selected the answer below from Amro because it exactly solves the question I posed. One key discovery for me was the difference between the Unicode Standard and a UTF (Unicode transformation format) (see http://unicode.org/faq/utf_bom.html). The Unicode Standard provides unique identifiers (code points) for characters. UTFs provide mappings of every code point "to a unique byte sequence." Since all but a handful of the characters I am using are in the first 128 code points, I'm going to switch to using UTF-8 as Romeo suggests. UTF-8 is supported by Matlab (The warning shown below won't need to be suppressed.) and Java, and for my application will generate smaller text files. I suppress the Matlab warning Warning: The encoding 'UTF-16LE' is not supported. with warning off MATLAB:iofun:UnsupportedEncoding;

    Hi All, i'm developing a WCF Webservice and consuming it within a mvc2 application. My problem is that i'm using FaultContracts on my methods with a custom FaultDetail and i'm throwing manyally the faultexception but when the client receive the exception , it receives a normal SoapException instead of my FaultException that i throwed from the service side. Am i missing something ? i red a lot of threads about using faultcontracts within wcf and what i did seems to be good.   • Connecting to a WSE 3.0 Web Service From a WCF Client

    I'm having difficulty connecting to a 3rd party WSE 3.0 web service from a WCF client. I have implemented the custom binding class as indicated in this KB article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms734745.aspx The problem seems to have to do with the security assertion used by the web service - UsernameOverTransport. When I attempt to call a method, I get the following exception: System.InvalidOperationException: The 'WseHttpBinding'.'[namespace]' binding for the 'MyWebServiceSoap'.'[namespace]' contract is configured with an authentication mode that requires transport level integrity and confidentiality. However the transport cannot provide integrity and confidentiality.. It is expecting a username, password, and CN number. In the example code supplied to us by the vendor, these credentials are bundled in a Microsoft.Web.Services3.Security.Tokens.UsernameToken. Here's the example supplied by the vendor: MyWebServiceWse proxy = new MyWebServiceWse(); UsernameToken token = new UsernameToken("Username", "password", PasswordOption.SendPlainText); token.Id = "<supplied CN Number>"; proxy.SetClientCredential(token); proxy.SetPolicy(new Policy(new UsernameOverTransportAssertion(), new RequireActionHeaderAssertion())); MyObject mo = proxy.MyMethod(); This works fine from a 2.0 app w/ WSE 3.0 installed.   • Client-side templating frameworks to streamline using jQuery with REST/JSON

    I'm starting to migrate some html generation tasks from a server-side framework to the client. I'm using jQuery on the client. My goal is to get JSON data via a REST api and use this data to populate HTML into the page. Right now, when a user on my site clicks a link to My Projects, the server generates HTML like this: <dl> <dt>Clean Toilet</dt> <dd>Get off your butt and clean this filth!</dd> <dt>Clean Car</dt> <dd>I think there's something growing in there...</dd> <dt>Replace Puked on Baby Sheets</dt> </dl> I'm changing this so that clicking My Projects will now do a GET request that returns something like this: [ { "name":"Clean Car", "description":"I think there's something growing in there..." }, { "name":"Clean Toilets", "description":"Get off your butt and clean this filth!" }, { "name":"Replace Puked on Baby Sheets" } ] I can certainly write custom jQuery code to take that JSON and generate the HTML from it. This is not my question, and I don't need advice on how to do that. What I'd like to do is completely separate the presentation and layout from the logic (jquery code). I don't want to be creating DL, DT, and DD elements via jQuery code. I'd rather use some sort of HTML templates that I can fill the data in to. These templates could simply be HTML snippets that are hidden in the page that the application was loaded from. Or they could be dynamically loaded from the server (to support user specific layouts, i18n, etc.). They could be displayed a single time, as well as allow looping and repeating. Perhaps it should support sub-templates, if/then/else, and so forth. I have LOTS of lists and content on my site that are presented in many different ways. I'm looking to create a simple and consistent way to generate and display content without creating custom jQuery code for every different feature on my site. To me, this means I need to find or build a small framework on top of jQuery (probably as a plugin) that meets these requirements. The only sort of framework that I've found that is anything like this is jTemplates. I don't know how good it is, as I haven't used it yet. At first glance, I'm not thrilled by it's template syntax. Anyone know of other frameworks or plugins that I should look into? Any blog posts or other resources out there that discuss doing this sort of thing? I just want to make sure that I've surveyed everything out there before building it myself. Thanks!
