    I've got a function I wrote quite some time ago that works fine, but I'd like to speed up the process and lessen server load by doing the same job in Javascript. I seem to be able to GET textbox values ok, but I can't seem to SET textbox values (I'm'-a JS noob). Can anyone lend a hand in converting my VB.NET code to it's JS equivalent? In my objectdatasource selecting event if no records came back I bind a single mock row to force the footer to show so they can still add records. Since the row does not contain real data I hide the row. ...   • Using the Microsoft Ajax Minifier with Web Setup project & Source Control

    I've just started investigating the Microsoft Ajax Minifer 4.0 for use with a Visual Studio 2008 Web Application I work on. It's proven easy enough to hook it into the .csproj file so it produced .min.js files for all scripts, however I'm stumped as to how to integrate this with the Web Setup project & Source Control. Essentially what I want to do is have the resultant .min.js files included in the Web Setup project without having them included in Source Control because: Having to check them out prior to the build being executing is a pain (the minifier cannot modify them if they're not checked out). As they're created as a "build artifact" it just seems wrong to have them stored under source control. The only option I've managed to come across so far is to explicitly include the .min.js files as part of the Setup project by right clicking on the Web Setup project and choosing "Add File", and then having the relevant folder hierarchy duplicated in "File System on Target Machine" so that I can force the file to the correct location. This is neither elegant or simple/robust as: It requires me to manually add every minified js file to the Web Setup project by hand Maintain a copy of the relevant directory structure in both the Web Application project and the Web Setup project Remember to add any new js files minified versions to the Web Setup project Is there a better way of doing this?

    I use Linq to Sql (although this is equally applicable in Entity Framework) for my models, and I'm finding myself creating buddy classes for my models all the time. I find this time consuming and repetitive. Is there an easy way to automatically generate these buddy classes based on the models? Perhaps a visual studio macro?   • Forms authentication for users and Windows for Database?

    On our production servers, the admins created a WebUser active directory account which is users for anonymous access to IIS and is also used to authenticate database access with our SQL Server instances using Integrated Security=SSPI in the connection string and identity impersonate="true" in the web.config. I've often come across situations where I would like to or even need to use forms authentication. However, I using forms authentication, Integrated Security seems to use the logged in user's credentials to authenticate against the database. In these cases I have changed the connection string to use the credentials of a SQL Server users instead. I would prefer to not have a hard coded username and password in the connection string or rather worse in code. Is it possible to use forms authentication just for user authentication for users and windows authentication with the IIS user for database access? What would be the best practice in such a situation?

    Hi, could you please help me find the reason of the mystery I've found? In the below code, I create a DataTable and filter it. When I use filter1, everything works as expected. When I use filter2, everything works as expected only if the SubsectionAmount variable is less than 10. As soon as I set SubsectionAmount=10, the dr2 array returns Nothing.   • How best to implement "favourites" feature? (like favourite products on a data driven website)

    Hi, I have written a dynamic database driven, object oriented website with an administration frontend etc etc. I would like to add a feature where customers can save items as "favourites", without having to create an account and login, to come back to them later, but I dont know how exactly to go about doing this... I see three options: Log favourites based on IP address and then change these to be logged against an account if the customer then creates an account; Force customers to create an account to be able to use this functionality; Log favourites based on IP address but give users the option to save their favourites under a name they specify. The problem with option 1 is that I dont know much about IP addresses - my Dad thinks they are unique, but I know people have had problems with systems like this. The problem with 1 and 2 is that accounts have not been opened up to customers yet - only administrators can log in at the moment. It should be easy to alter this (no more than a morning or afternoons work) but I would also have to implement usergroups too. The problem with option 3 is that if user A saves a favourites list called "My Favourites", and then user B tries to save a list under this name and it is refused, user B will then be able to access the list saved by user A because they now know it already exists. A solution to this is to password protect lists, but to go to all this effort I may as well implement option 2. Of course I could always use option 4; use an alternative if anyone can suggest a better solution than any of the above options. So has anyone ever done something like this before? If so how did you go about it? What do you recommend (or not recommend)? Many thanks in advance, Regards, Richard

  • LINQ to SQL Web Application Best Practices

    In my experience building web applications, I've always used a n-tier approach. A DAL that gets data from the db and populates the objects, and BLL that gets objects from the DAL and performs any business logic required on them, and the website that gets it's display data from the BLL. I've recently started learning LINQ, and most of the examples show the queries occurring right from the Web Application code-behinds(it's possible that I've only seen overly simplified examples). In the n-tier architectures, this was always seen as a big no-no. I'm a bit unsure of how to architect a new Web Application. I've been using the Server Explorer and dbml designer in VS2008 to create the dbml and object relationships. It seems a little unclear to me if the dbml would be considered the DAL layer, if the website should call methods within a BLL, which then would do the LINQ queries, etc. What are some general architecture best practices, or approaches to creating a Web Application solution using LINQ to SQL?

The problem I have is that I am currently just manually setting the initial size of the bitmap at 100 X 100 when what I really want is to have the bitmap be just big enough to include all the text that was written to it.     I want a website to be deployed automatically to a local IIS (built in Windows XP Pro SP3), avoiding VisualStudio-built-in server if possible. I'd like development source files to be stored in a project folder outside wwwroot (I wouldn't mind built files to be copied to wwwroot each time I press F5). I don't store my projects inside default directories inside "My documents". What should I specify as in "Web location" when starting an "New website" in Visual Studio 2010? A deployment path in wwwroot, a folder where I'd like to save my project, or something else? I want the website to be a part of a complex solution in VS 2010, also icludinc a class libray project, a WinForms application project, a Windows Service project and a common Entitity Framework data model.

  • jQuery multiple running totals

    0I am using jQuery to calculate a running total on multiple textboxes. Just found an awesome response on how to get that working a few days ago, but now I am running into another problem. When using one selector, the total for GetTotal is calculated perfectly. However, when I include the second selector, the totals begin to conflict with one another, and no longer calculate properly. I have been searching for a solution to this for some time now, does anyone have any ideas?   • Executing sequential stored procedures; works in query analyzer, doesn't in my .NET application

    Hello, I have an audit record table that I am writing to. I am connecting to MyDb, which has a stored procedure called 'CreateAudit', which is a passthrough stored procedure to another database on the same machine called MyOther DB with a stored procedure called 'CreatedAudit' as well. In other words in MyDB I have CreateAudit, which does the following EXEC dbo.MyOtherDB.CreateAudit. I call the MyDb CreateAudit stored procedure from my application, using subsonic as the DAL. The first time I call it, I call it with the following (pseudocode): Result = CreateAudit(recordId, "Opened") One line after that, I call: Result2 = CreateAudit(recordId, "Closed") In my second stored procedure it is supposed to mark the record that was created by the CreateAudit(recordId, "Opened") with a status of closed. It works great if I run them independently of one another, but when they run in sequence in the application, the record is not marked as "Closed". When I run SQL profiler I see that both queries ran, and if I copy the queries out and run them from query analyzer the record gets marked as closed 100% of the time! When I run it from the application, about once every 20 times or so, the record is successfully marked closed - the other 19 times nothing happens, but I do not get an error! Is it possible for the .NET app to skip over the ouput from the first stored procedure and start executing the second stored procedure before the record in the first is created? When I add a "WAITFOR DELAY '00:00:00:003'" to the top of my stored procedure, the record is also closed 100% of the time. My head is spinning, any ideas why this is happening! Thanks for any responses, very interested in hearing how this can happen.

    This is a small portion of my code file. Each time my debugger reaches the line 'NewDA.Fill(NewDS);' at runtime it jumps to the catch. I'm positive the daynumber variable gets a value that's present in the database and I've tried the query outside of the codefile on my database and it works fine.
