  • CHKDSK always runs on Hyper-V image

    - by Dave
I am having a problem with one of my VM's. Every time it boots, CHKDSK runs and finds no errors, but it goes into an endless loop (CHKDSK/Reboot/CHKDSK). The only way I can get Windows to boot is by cancelling the chkdsk. Is there any way I can tell windows to not do it? What do you guys suggest? Can't redo server. I guess it's also fair to say I get the following errors in Event Viewer "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolume2" "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:\" I only have 1 VHD attached, not sure what Volume 2 is. Thanks!

  • Data drive disappearing.

    - by Mike Keller
We have a Windows 2003 R2 server with SP 2 here that randomly loses a partition. There are two partitions the C: and the D: (the one that disappears). When I go into Disk Management the space shows available on the drive but that it isn't formated. There are two drives that are set up in a RAID 1 array. There isn't anything sticking out in the event log as to something triggering this problem and thank god we do daily backups of the data, but it gets kind of annoying to have to go back in there and reformat the partition and restore the data. Any places I can poke around to find the cause of this or even better solutions to the problem would be appreciated.

  • How to make AD highly available for applications that use it as an LDAP service

    - by Beaming Mel-Bin
Our situation We currently have many web applications that use LDAP for authentication. For this, we point the web application to one of our AD domain controllers using the LDAPS port (636). When we have to update the Domain Controller, this has caused us issues because one more web application could depend on any DC. What we want We would like to point our web applications to a cluster "virtual" IP. This cluster will consist of at least two servers (so that each cluster server could be rotated out and updated). The cluster servers would then proxy LDAPS connections to the DCs and be able to figure out which one is available. Questions For anyone that has had experience with this: What software did you use for the cluster? Any caveats? Or perhaps a completely different architecture to accomplish something similar?

  • Exchange 2010 SP2 OWA performance

    - by Frederik Nielsen
How do I increase performance in OWA 2010 SP2? I am running CAS on a seperate installation, which has 8GB RAM and 4 CPU cores - running virtualized in a vmware environment. However, the load times are pretty bad, so is there any way to improve those? I am thinking of installing a linux cache-stuff-server in front of the OWA, but will that work? And how should it be done? Allright, I "fixed" it - was just something temporary issue. Thanks for your replies

  • Do you know your DNS server?

    - by John Paul Cook
If you don’t know your DNS server is valid, you need to find out before July 9. The FBI found rogue DNS servers and replaced them with clean, safe DNS servers to protect the public. These safe, clean servers will be turned off on July 9, 2012. If your computer was compromised to use the rogue servers, it will stop resolving DNS queries on July 9 when the clean servers are turned off. The FBI has provided full technical details at http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2011/november/malware_110911/DNS-changer-malware.pdf...(read more)

  • Speaking this week at Richmond SQL Server User Group

    - by drsql
Thursday night, at 6:00 (or so) I will be speaking in Richmond ( http://richmondsql.org/cs2007/ ), talking about How to Implement a Hierarchy using SQL Server. The abstract is: One of the most common structures you will come across in the real world is a hierarchy (either a single parent "tree" or a multi-parent "graph"). Many systems will implement the obvious examples, such as a corporate managerial structure or a bill of materials. It turns out that almost any many-to-many relationship can be...(read more)

  • Has this server been compromised?

    - by Griffo
A friend is running a VPS (CentOS) His business partner was the sysadmin but has left him high and dry to look after the system. So, I've been asked to help out in fixing an apparent spam problem. His IP address got blacklisted for unsolicited mail. I'm not sure where to look for a problem, but I started with netstat to see what open connections were running. It looks to me like he has remote hosts connected to his SMTP server. Here's the output: Active Internet connections (w/o servers) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State tcp 0 0 78.153.208.195:imap 86-40-60-183-dynamic.:10029 ESTABLISHED tcp 0 0 78.153.208.195:imap 86-40-60-183-dynamic.:10010 ESTABLISHED tcp 0 1 78.153.208.195:35563 news.avanport.pt:smtp SYN_SENT tcp 0 0 78.153.208.195:35559 vip-us-br-mx.terra.com:smtp TIME_WAIT tcp 0 0 78.153.208.195:35560 vip-us-br-mx.terra.com:smtp TIME_WAIT tcp 1 1 78.153.208.195:imaps 86-40-60-183-dynamic.:11647 CLOSING tcp 1 1 78.153.208.195:imaps 86-40-60-183-dynamic.:11645 CLOSING tcp 0 0 78.153.208.195:35562 mx.a.locaweb.com.br:smtp TIME_WAIT tcp 0 0 78.153.208.195:35561 mx.a.locaweb.com.br:smtp TIME_WAIT tcp 0 0 78.153.208.195:imap 86-41-8-64-dynamic.b-:49446 ESTABLISHED Does this indicate that his server may be acting as an open relay? Mail should only be outgoing from localhost. Apologies for my lack of knowledge but I don't work on linux in my day job. EDIT: Here's some output from /var/log/maillog which looks like it may be the result of spam. If it appears to be the case to others, where should I look next to investigate a root cause? I put the server IP through www.checkor.com and it came back clean. • The QueryExtender web server control

    - by nikolaosk
In this post I am going to present a hands on example on how to use the QueryExtender web server control. It is built into ASP.Net 4.0 and it is available from the Toolbox in VS 2010.Before we move on with our example let me explain what this control does and why we need it. Its goal is to extend the functionality of the LINQ to Entities and LINQ to SQL datasources. Most of the times when we have data coming out from a datasource we want some sort of filtering. We do achieve that by using a Where...(read more)

  • IIS6 cannot start additional processes when page request is called from other than localhost

    - by awe
I have a web application dll that is running under iis6. This is starting a number of processes to be able to handle more than one request at the time. This is working perfect in a numbers of installations. In this particular installation, it runs perfectly when initialized by a call in IE on the server using http://localhost/apppath . The problem is when the processes are from another location, i.e. another computer on the same network initialising the call throught http://servername/apppath . In this case, the initial dll running under iis is executing (proved by logging), but it fails to initialize the additional processes. If the additional processes are already initialized by a call from localhost, it also works when called from another machine (in this case, it is just attached to the existing processes).

  • SQL Server Version

I'm continually trying to track down what service packs are installed on various SQL Servers I support. I can never find the right support page on Microsoft's site. So here's an article with all the SQL Server version information I can track down. If you know of any older versions or can help me fill out any missing data, please post in the comments and I'll update the article.

  • Exploring In-memory OLTP Engine (Hekaton) in SQL Server 2014 CTP1

The continuing drop in the price of memory has made fast in-memory OLTP increasingly viable. SQL Server 2014 allows you to migrate the most-used tables in an existing database to memory-optimised 'Hekaton' technology, but how you balance between disk tables and in-memory tables for optimum performance requires judgement and experiment. What is this technology, and how can you exploit it? Rob Garrison explains.

  • Active Directory theme policies

    - by Tuinslak
Hey, I'm currently managing a terminal server in a domain. As the TS-service just got installed, previous users (I logged in with every user once to test it and set up a few things) use the default windows 2008 theme. New users automatically use the fancy Aero theme. Is there a way to push the Aero theme to all current users? I currently have something like this in my policies: However, when logging in with a user, the theme is not changed. Only if I disable "prohibit access to the control panel", the theme can be changed (doesn't seem to change automatically). But this gives them access to every other control panel feature as well. And giving users only access to "desk.cpl" CP-applet, gives them an access error as well when attempting to change the theme. Another question: can I, as admin, take over and/or log in as another user when that user is not logged in? Thanks

  • Disable IPv6 on Loopback address (Localhost, Computer name, ...)

    - by Greg Bray
We tried installing a 3rd party software product on a new Windows 2008 R2 server and found that everything works except for accessing local services through loopback addresses such as localhost or the computer name (ex: VPS-Web which resolves to localhost). We are not using IPv6 and would like to disable it until the software is compatible. I tried using these instructions for disabling IPv6 on Windows 2008 R2 but it did not disable the protocol for localhost. Pinging localhost or VPS-Web will still return ::1: instead of 127.0.0.1. I can use ping localhost -4 to get the correct address, but IPv6 takes precedent over IPv4 so the 3rd party software only gets the IPv6 address.

  • Restricting SSRS subscriptions to shared schedules only

    - by Matt Frear
Hi all I'm reasonably new to SQL Server Reporting Services and Report Manager, and completely new to SSRS's Subscriptions. We're running SSRS 2008. Out of the box it seems that a user with the Browser role can create a Subscription to a report and schedule it to run at any time they choose. As an admin I have setup a schedule called "Overnight reports" and have it run every night from 1am. I would like it so that when a regular user creates their Subscription they can only use one of my shared schedules so that their subscription will only run overnight. Is this possible? Thanks -Matt

  • "The user account does not have permission to run this task"

    - by Ken
I'm trying to get a scheduled task to run on Windows Server 2008. It has been working fine for months, and then hung, so I killed it, and now I can't get it to start. (In case it's not obvious, I'm not a Windows sysadmin by any stretch of the imagination. I inherited responsibility for this system, more or less.) The error it gives is: "The user account does not have permission to run this task". The task's "author" is "A". The task's "When running the task, use the following user account:" is "B". And my user is "C". All of A, B, C are members of the Administrators group, so I'm a bit puzzled as to why it thinks I don't have permissions to run this. Ideas?

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services: A generic error occurred in GDI+

    - by Greg Low
While building some maps today in SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services, I kept coming up with an error that said: A generic error occurred in GDI+ I was struggling to think what I'd done wrong. After much nashing of teeth and removal of hair, I finally worked out what the error was. When I got to the "Choose Color Scheme and Visualization" page of the map wizard for building a color analytical map, I hadn't picked the correct value for the "Field to Visualize" drop-down. I'm guessing that because...(read more)

  • Dynamic dns client stops updating when login off Windows

    - by Sami-L
Running a dynamic dns updater software on Windows server 2008 R2, when I log off the software stops updating, I concluded that I have to look for a dynamic dns client running as service, I found this task a bit heavy since there is a big variety on the net, it needs a long time to make the right choice as many details are to pay attention to, free, masked fees, fees, installed on machine, configured on router, trusted, not trusted, compliant with OS, not, ... That's why I am here to ask for help on this matter, I would like to be advised by skilled people, to find a trusted free dns updater (client) for Windows which can run as service, and maybe which can send email when update fails.

  • SQL Server v.Next (Denali) : Changes to performance counters

    - by AaronBertrand
In a previous post about changed system objects in Denali , I talked about the changes to memory-related DMVs due to underlying changes in the memory manager.
