  • How to unit test internals (organization) of a data structure?

    - by Herms
I've started working on a little ruby project that will have sample implementations of a number of different data structures and algorithms. Right now it's just for me to refresh on stuff I haven't done for a while, but I'm hoping to have it set up kind of like Ruby Koans, with a bunch of unit tests written for the data structures but the implementations empty (with full implementations in another branch). It could then be used as a nice learning tool or code kata. However, I'm having trouble coming up with a good way to write the tests. I can't just test the public behavior as that won't necessarily tell me about the implementation, and that's kind of important here. For example, the public interfaces of a normal BST and a Red-Black tree would be the same, but the RB Tree has very specific data organization requirements. How would I test that?

  • How do I wait until a console application is idle?

    - by Anthony Mastrean
I have a console application that starts up, hosts a bunch of services (long-running startup), and then waits for clients to call into it. I have integration tests that start this console application and make "client" calls. How do I wait for the console application to complete its startup before making the client calls? I want to avoid doing Thread.Sleep(int) because that's dependent on the startup time (which may change) and I waste time if the startup is faster. Process.WaitForInputIdle works only on applications with a UI (and I confirmed that it does throw an exception in this case). I'm open to awkward solutions like, have the console application write a temp file when it's ready.

  • Simple File-based Record Storage with Fast Text Searching for Compact Framework and Silverlight

    - by Eric Farr
I have a single table with lots of records ( 100k) that I need to be able to index and search on several text fields. The easiest searches will have the first part of the string specified (eg, LIKE 'ABC%' in SQL). The tougher searches will need to search for any substring within the text fields (eg, LIKE '%ABC%' in SQL). I need to run on the Compact Framework. SQL Compact is a memory hog and overkill for my one table. Besides, I'd like to be able to run on Silverlight 4 eventually. The file and indexes can be generated on the full .NET Framework and I only need read capability on the Compact Framework. My records are not especially large and can be expressed in fix length format. I'm looking for some existing code or libraries to avoid having to write a file-based BTree implementation from scratch.

  • Fast, lightweight XML parser

    - by joe90
I have a specific format XML document that I will get pushed. This document will always be the same type so it's very strict. I need to parse this so that I can convert it into JSON (well, a slightly bastardized version so someone else can use it with DOJO). My question is, shall I use a very fast lightweight (no need for SAX, etc.) XML parser (any ideas?) or write my own, basically converting into a StringBuffer and spinning through the array? Basically, under the covers I assume all HTML parsers will spin thru the string (or memory buffer) and parse, producing output on the way through. Thanks //edit Thanks for the responses so far :) The xml will be between 3/4 lines to about 50 max (at the extreme)..

  • Reasons to learn MSIL

    - by mannu
Hi, Learning MSIL is fun and all that. Understanding what is going on "under the hood" can in many ways improve how you write your code performance-wise. However, the IL that is produced by the compiler is quite verbose and does not tell the whole story since JIT will optimize away a lot of the code. I, personally, have had good use of my very basic IL understanding when I've had to make a small fix in an assembly I do not have the source code for. But, I could as well have used Reflector to generate C# code. I would like to know if you've ever had good use of MSIL understanding and/or why you think it is worth learning it (except for the fun in it, of course). I'd also like to know if you think one should not learn it and why.

  • How to make a scroller on a micro-processor/-controller?

    - by Louise
I would like to write a text scroller on a micro-processor with 4 5x7 displays in ANSI-C. Does anyone know of example source code or anything that can help me get started? Update This is the user manual for the micro-processor board I have. On PDF page 17 is a picture of the board with the displays. The code is written in an IDE called "zds2_Z8Encore493.exe" and then flashed to the micro-controller over serial port. I would like the text to cascade from one to the next to the next column-by-column, so it is smooth.

  • Python subprocess.Popen

    - by Albert
I have that code: #!/usr/bin/python -u localport = 9876 import sys, re, os from subprocess import * tun = Popen(["./newtunnel", "22", str(localport)], stdout=PIPE, stderr=STDOUT) print "** Started tunnel, waiting to be ready ..." for l in tun.stdout: sys.stdout.write(l) if re.search("Waiting for connection", l): print "** Ready for SSH !" break The "./newtunnel" will not exit, it will constantly output more and more data to stdout. However, that code will not give any output and just keeps waiting in the tun.stdout. When I kill the newtunnel process externally, it flushes all the data to tun.stdout. So it seems that I can't get any data from the tun.stdout while it is still running. Why is that? How can I get the information? Note that the default bufsize for Popen is 0 (unbuffered). I can also specify bufsize=0 but that doesn't change anything.

  • Getting past Salesforce trigger governors

    - by Jake
I'm trying to write an "after update" trigger that does a batch update on all child records of the record that has just been updated. This needs to be able to handle 15k+ child records at a time. Unfortunately, the limit appears to be 100, which is so far below my needs it's not even close to acceptable. I haven't tried splitting the records into batches of 100 each, since this will still put me at a cap of 10k updates per trigger execution. (Maybe I could just daisy-chain triggers together? ugh.) Does anyone know what series of hoops I can jump through to overcome yet another ridiculously short-sighted limitation by this awful development "platform"?

How should I learn better about interfaces so when I want to do something I be able to Think about using them in my design...or for example I want to learn about dependency injection or even using mocking objects for testing, these are all related to good understanding of interfaces and know when and how to use them ... Can you plase provide me some good advice, reading,... then can help me with that?

  • Unable to execute fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC) and not updating csv file.

    - by Rachel
// First, prepare the statement, using placeholders $query = "SELECT * FROM tableName"; $stmt = $this->connection->prepare($query); // Execute the statement $stmt->execute(); var_dump($stmt->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)); while ($row = $stmt->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)) { echo "Hi"; // Export every row to a file fputcsv($data, $row); } Is this correct way to do and if yes than why do I get false value for var_dump and than it does not go into while loop and does not write into csv file. Any suggestions ?

  • can't insert xml dml expression as a string

    - by 81967
Here is the code below that would explain you the problem... I create a table below with an xml column and declare a variable, initialize it and Insert the Value into the xml column, create table CustomerInfo (XmlConfigInfo xml) declare @StrTemp nvarchar(2000) set @StrTemp = '<Test></Test>' insert into [CustomerInfo](XmlConfigInfo) values (@StrTemp) Then comes the part of the question,, if I write this... update [CustomerInfo] set XmlConfigInfo.modify('insert <Info></Info> into (//Test)[1]') -- Works Fine!!! but when I try this, set @StrTemp = 'insert <Info></Info> into (//Test)[1]' update [CustomerInfo] set XmlConfigInfo.modify(@StrTemp) -- Doesn't Work!!! and throws an error The argument 1 of the xml data type method "modify" must be a string literal. is there a way around for this one? I tried this, but it is not working :(

  • C or Ada for engineering computations?

    - by yCalleecharan
Hi,as an engineer I currently use C to write programs dealing with numerical methods. I like C as it's very fast. I don't want to move to C++ and I have been reading a bit about Ada which has some very good sides. I believe that much of the software in big industries have been or more correctly were written in Ada. I would like to know how C compares with Ada. Is Ada fast as C? I understand that no language is perfect but I would like to know if Ada was designed for scientific computing. Thanks a lot...

  • implement button click in html

    - by vbNewbie
I have been trying to execute a button event in html page that displays additional content on the web page. I am getting a null reference error when using the getelementbyid and not sure how to change this. Here is the html reference I need to engage: <div class="button" style="float:none;width:180px;margin:20px auto 30px;"><a href="#" id="more" style="width:178px">Show more ?</a></div> </div> and here is my code: Dim wb As New WebBrowser wb.Navigate(fromUrl) While wb.ReadyState <> WebBrowserReadyState.Complete Application.DoEvents() End While Debug.Write(wb.DocumentText) Dim htmlElements As HtmlElementCollection = wb.Document.GetElementsByTagName("<a") If Not wb.Document Is Nothing Then Try If wb.DocumentText.Contains("more") Then If wb.Document.GetElementById("more").GetAttribute("href") Then wb.Document.GetElementById("more").InvokeMember("#") End If End If Catch ex As Exception MessageBox.Show(ex.Message.ToString) End Try End If I appreciate any ideas.

  • C#: Hook up all events from object in single statement.

    - by David
In my domain layer all domain objects emit events (of type InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler) to indicate invalid state when the IsValid property is called. On an aspx codebehind, I have to manually wire up the events for the domain object like this: _purchaseOrder.AmountIsNull += new DomainObject.InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler(HandleDomainObjectEvent); _purchaseOrder.NoReason += new DomainObject.InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler(HandleDomainObjectEvent); _purchaseOrder.NoSupplier += new DomainObject.InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler(HandleDomainObjectEvent); _purchaseOrder.BothNewAndExistingSupplier += new DomainObject.InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler(HandleDomainObjectEvent); Note that the same method is called in each case since the InvalidDomainobjectEventArgs class contains the message to display. Is there any way I can write a single statement to wire up all events of type InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler in one go? Thanks David

  • How can I make Vim autosave files when it loses focus?

    - by Peeja
I'm used to my editors autosaving files when they lose focus. I recently switched to MacVim, and I can't recreate that behavior. I tried this: autocmd BufLeave,FocusLost * wall but if a buffer is unnamed when the window or MacVim loses focus, I get an error like the following: Error detected while processing BufLeave Auto commands for "*": E141: No file name for buffer 1 I'm confused, because :wall's documentation says: Write all changed buffers. Buffers without a file name or which are readonly are not written. so I'd expect it to skip unnamed buffers. Is there a better way to do this?

  • Multiple .NET processes memory footprint

    - by mr.b
I am developing an application suite that consists of several applications which user can run as needed (they can run all at the same time, or only several..). My concern is in physical memory footprint of each process, as shown in task manager. I am aware that Framework does memory management behind the curtains in terms that it devotes parts of memory for certain things that are not directly related to my application. The question. Does .NET Framework has some way of minimizing memory footprint of processes it runs when there are several processes running at the same time? (Noobish guess ahead) Like, if System.dll is already loaded by one process, does framework load it for each process, or it has some way of sharing it between processes? I am in no way striving to write as small (resource-wise) apps as possible (if I were, I probably wouldn't be using .NET Framework in the first place), but if there's something I can do something about over-using resources, I'd like to know about it.

  • How would I UPDATE these table entries with SQL?

    - by CT
I am working on an Asset Database problem. I enter assets into a database. Every object is an asset and has variables within the asset table. An object is also a type of asset. In this example the type is server. Here is the Query to retrieve all necessary data: SELECT asset.id ,asset.company ,asset.location ,asset.purchaseDate ,asset.purchaseOrder ,asset.value ,asset.type ,asset.notes ,server.manufacturer ,server.model ,server.serialNumber ,server.esc ,server.warranty ,server.user ,server.prevUser ,server.cpu ,server.memory ,server.hardDrive FROM asset LEFT JOIN server ON server.id = asset.id WHERE asset.id = '$id' How would I write a query to update an asset?

  • Resolving type parameter values passed to ancester type using reflection

    - by Tom Tucker
I've asked a similar question before, but this one is much more challenging. How do I find a value of a specific type parameter that is passed to an ancestor class or an interface implemented by one of its ancestor classes using reflection? I basically need to write a method that looks like this. // Return the value of the type parameter at the index passed to the parameterizedClass from the clazz. Object getParameterValue(Class<?> clazz, Class<?> parameterizedClass, int index) For the example below, getParameterValue(MyClass.class, Map.class, 1) would return String.class public class Foo<K, V> implements Map<K, V>{ } public class Bar<V> extends Foo<Integer, V> { } public class MyClass extends Bar<String> { } Thanks!

  • Disallow using comma operator

    - by RiaD
I never use the comma operator. But sometimes, when I write some recursions, I make a stupid mistake: I forget the function name. That's why the last operand is returned, not the result of a recursion call. Simplified example: int binpow(int a,int b){ if(!b) return 1; if(b&1) return a*binpow(a,b-1); return (a*a,b/2); // comma operator } Is it possible get a compilation error instead of incorrect, hard to debug code?

  • Issue with maxWorkerThreads and thread count

    - by Kartik M
I have created an ASP.NET application which creates threads in an infinite loop. I set maxWorkerThreads to 20 in processModel in machine.config. When I checked the Thread count in perfmon there was around 7000 threads created in worker process. In PageLoad() I have: using System.Threading; ... int count = 0; var threadList = new System.Collections.Generic.List<System.Threading.Thread>(); try { while (true) { Thread newThread = new Thread(ThreadStart(DummyCall), 1024); newThread.Start(); threadList.Add(newThread); count++; } } catch (Exception ex) { Response.Write(count + " : " + ex.ToString()); } Function: void DummyCall() { System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000000000); } How do I restrict thread creation in ASP.NET with IIS6/7?

I would show only part of result to get the idea. array( 'title' => '/home/computer/Downloads', 'children' => array( 0 => array( 'title' => '/home/computer/Downloads/Apple', 'children' => array( ... ) ) ); Response from server can change according to scanned directory. Can someone help me write this function. Please note that this is response from remote server and php functions can not scan any remote dir.

  • SerialPort not taking input. It throws it back at me!

    - by Mashew
When I try to write an AT command to my GSM modem, it does not seem to take the command. I have used PuTTY to check that the command words, it does. I have checked to see if the port is opening, it does. What could I possibly be doing wrong? • Duplicate partitioning key performance impact

    - by Anshul
I've read in some posts that having duplicate partitioning key can have a performance impact. I've two tables like: CREATE TABLE "Test1" ( CREATE TABLE "Test2" ( key text, key text, column1 text, name text, value text, age text, PRIMARY KEY (key, column1) ... ) PRIMARY KEY (key, name, age) ) In Test1 column1 will contain column name and value will contain its corresponding value. The main advantage of Test1 is that I can add any number of column/value pairs to it without altering the table by just providing same partitioning key each time. Now my question is how will each of these table schema's impact the read/write performance if I've millions of rows and number of columns can be upto 50 in each row. How will it impact the compaction/repair time if I'm writing duplicate entries frequently?
