• When learning C, should one only refer to resources published from 2007 onward?

  I ask this question because the international standardization subcommittee for programming languages, or ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22 Programming languages, states on this page: http://www.open-std.org/JTC1/SC22/WG14/www/standards that Technical Corrigendum 3, the latest one, was published in 2007.   What Unix program generates "diff"s between text files (or INSERT/UPDATE/DELETEs for databases) in such a way that the order that the "diff"s are applied in is irrelevant, and the result is the same regardless of order. Etherpad used to do something like this. Example (for a given document or database): % Adam makes a change X, then Bob makes a change Y, then Adam makes another change Z. % However, because of network latency, Adam sees the changes in this order: XZY, while Bob sees them in this order: YXZ. % However, the code/changes are written so that XYZ and YXZ yield the same result. • Get user profile size in vbscript

  Hello, I am trying to get the size of a user's local profile using VBScript. I know the directory of the profile (typically "C:\Users\blah"). UPDATE: I did some deeper digging and it turns out that the Permission Denied error occurs if permission is denied to some subfolders or files of the directory whose size I wish to get. In the case of user profiles, there's always a few system files that even the Administrator group does not have permission to access. To get around this, I wrote a function that tries to get the folder size the normal way (above), then, if the error occurs, it recurses into the subdirectories of the folder, ignoring folder sizes that are permission denied (but not the rest of the folders). • How would I reset a usb hub multiplier driver?

  I have a usb port which connects a little man usb hub I got for Christmas. It worked fine to begin with however now it works on any computer other than my own. When I plug the man in it lights up and when I plug things into the man it says they have malfunctioned but when I plug them straight into tha port it's fine. Is there somesort of driver that needs to be refreshed? I have no idea how these work so please explain! I use windows 7 32bit.

• Ubuntu - changing another users file permissions

  I have setup Ubuntu as a development web server - however I am experiencing problems with file permissions. I have 2 users, user1 and user2, and they both have been put into the group www-data. I have uploaded a new file with user1 so the file is owned by user1 and the www-data group. At present if user2 wants to modify the permissions on that file to say 777 - they cannot. Is there a way to allow any users within a group to be able to modifiy permissions etc.. on this file? I have tried changing umask to 002 and a few other combinations that were suggested without luck.

• IIS6.0 asking for credentials after MS Updates

  We have an IIS6.0 Server running on a Windows 2003 Server. Last weekend it went though maintenance, and updated a quite a few Windows updates, it is now brought up to current updates (as of March 29th). Previous to these updates we could connect to the Web page via the hostname or via a alias (there is a DNS and a WINS alias (the alias is the same name in both) that are both pointing to the system). Now since the updates it asks for credentials to access the page, when trying to access the page via IP, or by name. If you use the alias it will go right into the page. I had added a new alias in DNS and tried to access it via this name with the same effect. So it appears that the WINS alias allows the page to show up properly. I have seen this KB but http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871179 though not sure if it really is relevant to this issue. As it does refer to the 3 strikes rules to display the 401.1 error. The IIS Application pool is running under a domain account. Teh default page is allowing Anonymous login under a local account. Any thoughts? Thanks Adam

• Starfield Wildcard SSL Certificate Not Trusted in All Browsers

  I am at a loss as to what else I might try in order to debug this issue with a Starfield Wildcard SSL Certificate. The problem is that in certain browsers (Safari or the most-updated chrome you can get for OS X 10.5.8 for example) the certificate comes up as untrusted, even on the root domain. My server setup / background info: General LAMP setup - CentOS 6.3 - on a Godaddy VPS Starfield Technologies Wildcard SSL certificate Installed using the instructions from godaddy's support pages ssl.conf lines are basically as follows: SSLCertificateFile /path/to/cert/mysite.com.cert SSLCertificateKeyFile /path/to/cert/mysite.key SSLCertificateChainFile /path/to/cert/sf_bundle.crt Everything seemingly worked fine until the other night when I noticed the problem in OS X, I assume it's more browser version related, but have only been able to replicate it on that particular machine. What I have tried: Updating sf_bundle.crt from godaddy's cert repository and Starfield's repository versions Following This ServerFault answer from Jim Phares - changing the ChainFile line to sf_intermediate.crt from Starfield's repository Using http://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-checker.html on my url It says the domain is correctly listed on the certificate but comes up with an error that reads The certificate is not trusted in all web browsers. You may need to install an Intermediate/chain certificate to link it to a trusted root certificate. What might I try next to remedy the untrusted certificate issue? Let me know if there is any other information needed that might help debugging this issue. Thanks in advance!

• What are the steps to set up a Hyper-V solution with one NIC

  I have successfully installed centos on a virtual machine via Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2. This server has one NIC. I have created a virtual NIC, and virtual subnet, and within the virtual machine (via console) I can ping the gateway. But not google. Is there certain steps I am missing, I feel like I'm one setting away. Im not sure what other information would be useful. • htaccess not properly rewriting urls

  This is a bit of a weird one. I'm doing some work on a server, and I need rewrite rules for directories that actually exist (in some cases, they are more than one level deep) At the moment my .htaccess looks like this: RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^simfiles/([-\ a-zA-Z0-9:/]+)$ http://mydomain.com/?portal=simfiles&folder=$1 [L] And this is working OK, for example, a url like: mydomain.com/sifmiles/my-files Will get redirected to mydomain.com/?portal=simfiles&folder=my-files Or in the case of a directory structure that is deeper than one level: mydomain.com/sifmiles/my-files/more-of-my-files Will get redirected to mydomain.com/?portal=simfiles&folder=my-files/more-of-my-files I wrote the regex so that it won't match things with a . in the path, because there are css and js files which reside in simfiles/somedirectory, and if I redirect everything then these cannot be loaded. I tried a configuration like this: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^simfiles/([-\ a-zA-Z0-9:/\.]+)$ http://mydomain.com/?portal=simfiles&folder=$1 [L] But that doesn't work, things still don't load properly. So my first question is, how can I achieve this "properly"? I don't like my solution because it means redirects won't occur if the folder has a . in its name. My second problem, is that while the redirection is happening properly, the url becomes: http://mydomain.com/?portal=simfiles&folder=my-files I want the URL to remain clean, like: http://mydomain.com/sifmiles/my-files How can I achieve this?

• Distributed Database Services?

  I'm working on a database-driven web service with clients in the US and Australia. We're currently hosted in the US, however our Australian clients are experiencing lag. The lag is primarily due to the fact that the pages launch AJAX queries which require some db work to be done on our database in the US and these take a while to perform a round trip. Ideally, we're looking for some kind of distributed database system which replicates our main US database in Australia (and possibly other locations if we choose to expand later on). Does anyone have any suggestions for services which offer something like this? Something like a CDN (CacheFly etc), which is web-based, simple to set up etc but for databases instead of static files. Ideally it would be completely transparent to the application and abstract away all the distributed database management, syncs etc.

• Windows Vista - Can Boot into Safe Mode Command Prompt, Cannot Access Flash Drive

  Hey there, Got a laptop dropped into my lap. Has Vista installed. Normal boot never gets past the login screen. Safe mode will get past, but just barely. I can try and start the task manager at that point, but it never opens. Only reliable way to do anything I've got is the safe mode command prompt... Boots up and logs in fine. I can't see anything noticably wrong via regedit, but it's been a long time since I've had to fix up a Windows box... not sure that I would. Problem I'm having, is that I want to run ComboFix/etc, but have no way to get them on there... When I pop a flash drive in, it seems to mount it (flash drive flickers as normal) but it never seems to be mounted... I cannot access it through any drive letter on the command line. I managed to start the device manager (devmgmt.msc) and the flash drive was recognized and listed... Any ideas on how to get this thing going again? (Short of a reinstall.) (It has no CD drive, either, so burning files to CD would not be easy...) Thanks! Adam

• Apache2.2 not responding on Windows 7 desktop

  Afternoon! I'm having some trouble with Apache2.2 on Windows 7. For over a year it's been running no problem, but all of a sudden requests have just stopped responding. They don't ever time out, the browser just keeps on waiting for a response, which makes me think it's something blocking communication with Apache. Interestingly though, if I stop Apache the requests fail immediately. The Apache service is running, and using netstat I can see it listening on port 80 as configured: TCP 127.0.0.1:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING If I stop the Apache service, that line disappears. I have an entry within my hosts file for each VHost I'm trying, all pointing to 127.0.0.1. Each VHost is configured to *:80. Nothing however is getting recorded in the access or error (at debug level) log files. I've verified the file paths are correct, even though they were never changed. Neither is anything getting recorded within Windows' Event Log. The problem showed up when I added a new VHost and restarted, however I hadn't been using it for a couple of days prior so I don't believe it's the config change. I have performed a syntax check to be sure, and when starting from the command prompt no errors are reported there. I do have Windows Firewall running, however I've verified the Apache rule is correct and tried turning it off to ensure that wasn't the problem. I've reinstalled Apache, in the hope it might magically fix something using the default config, but still no joy. I've also tried using a different port. I'm completely lost for ideas now. • Connecting multiple ColdFusion 10 instances to a single Apache 2.2 server

  This is on Windows 7 Home Premium edition. I have got two ColdFusion 10 (updater 2) instances: "cfusion" (the default one), and "scratch". I have got a single instance of Apache 2.2 running. Within Apache, I have set up two virtual hosts, each of which needs to be served by a different ColdFusion instance. Each of the CF instances serves files fine via Tomcat's internal web server. Apache serves vanilla HTML files fine too. So both CF instances, and both virtual hosts separately work OK. I can get wsconfig.exe to connect either one of the CF instances to the Apache server, and serve CF files via Apache & that instance. However I cannot find a way of connecting the second CF instance to Apache as well, so that both CF instances are conected, each serving one of the virtual hosts. WSConfig doesn't seem to understand the notion of "multiple CF instances", and the changes it makes to the httpd.conf (via mod_jk.conf) does not seem to be implemented in such a way as to accommodate multiple CF instances talking to a single Apache instance, or multiple virtual hosts. I freely admit to not being confident enough with how mod_jk (or even really httpd.conf) works to be able to guess if I can change stuff to make it work. If I try to add the second CF instance using WSConfig, I just get a message "the web server is already configured for ColdFusion". Be that as it may... not the instance of ColdFusion I want to connect it to! If I remove the existing connector to whichever instance is already connected, I can then connect the other one no problems. Not that this helps, but it demonstrates that the CF instance can connect to Apache. This all used to be fairly straight fwd under older versions of CF and JRun :-( The only docs I have found are on the "Connect multiple Apache virtual hosts on a web server to a single ColdFusion server" page, but that specifically only deals with a single CF instance. There is no equivalent page for multiple CF instances. I'm kinda hoping I can move some of the mod_jk config into my virtual host entries in httpd-vhosts.conf (this is how it used to work for JRun), but I've no idea what to put where. I think I've covered all the necessary info here? If not, sing out and I'll add more. Thanks. • Outlook 2010 "forgets" password

  I am running Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 Pro x64 on a domain. Outlook is connecting to exchange, and the username and password should be pulled from my logon credentials. The problem is, about every few hours, outlook "forgets" what my password is. In the taskbar, a caution triangle appears, and in the bottom right hand corner of exchange, a "Needs Password" replaces "Connected to Microsoft Exchange." Simply clicking "Needs Password" fixes the issue, and new messages are downloaded. What could the issue be? What could be timing out? • CentOS: eth0 not starting on boot

  Whenever I reboot a CentOS Hyper-V VM, eth0 does not start automatically. All I need to do is perform ifup eth0 and all is fixed, but that isn't feasible from ssh! I am starting in runlevel 3. • Screen flickers after resuming from hibernate with Intel GMA 3600 (Acer D270 with Intel N2600)

  Fresh system install, with correct display driver from Intel (8.14.8.1065). Clicking "Update driver" merely results in a message saying the driver was already up-to-date. After resuming from hibernate the entire screen flickers. This is especially noticeable while using IE9 (which has hardware acceleration enabled by default) on Google maps, in particular while typing in an address in the map search field (the flickering is much worse under these circumstances). Note that sleep worked fine, only hibernate causes this issue. Restarting "fixes" the problem temporarily until the next hibernate-resume. Aero is enabled. This is on Windows 7 (Pro) 32-bit, on an Acer Aspire One D270-1998, with the Intel N2600 (which has the Intel GMA 3600 built-in).

• How to get pen input to draw?

  I just got a crappy little Hyundai pen input module To use on a normal Windows 7 HP laptop, it works quite well with the Hyundai software, but that's in Chinese, and the input only stays on the screen for a second. When I try to use it in Paint, it just draws a dot, and switches back to an unclicked state, similarly, it's impossible to move a window. Is there ant way I can keep the click held down when the pen is touching the pad in order to draw, or is there any third party software anyone knows of that can do this?

• apache httpd.conf - virtualhost configuration

  I'm new to apache and httpd.conf The problem I'm having is I need different website to go to different vhost configs and if only the IP is requested it needs to go to the root index.html This works fine for the virtualhosts: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/bali-accommodation.co ServerName www.bali-accommodation.co </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/balibeach.co ServerName www.balibeach.co </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/dating-website.co ServerName www.dating-website.co </VirtualHost> However when I just specify the IP it does to www.XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (appends the www). I know in the websites there is a .htaccess redirect that adds the www but I didn't want the IP to go into the vhosts config. I tried adding this to the top of the Vhost config: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html ServerName localhost </VirtualHost> with above it shows the index.html perfectly but all the websites go into this catch all. I've also tried this for the websites vhosts: DocumentRoot /var/www/html/bali-accommodation.co ServerName www.bali-accommodation.co I've tried the above with and without the 'www' in the first line unsuccessfully. Is there a way to have the vhosts work for the domains and if someone just enters the IP it goes to the root index.html? /var/www/html/index.html? thankyou so much Adam

• Windows Server 2008 - RAID 5 Fails on Reboot

  Hey, I've got an install of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. It's running software RAID-5 with five disks. The disks were originally formatted under Windows Server 2003, but came up fine once I installed Windows Server 2008. The issue I'm having is that every time I reboot the server, the RAID comes up with a "Failed Redundancy" - the data stays available. I have 4 disks on a PCI SATA controller, and one of the disks connected to the motherboard's on-board SATA ports. (The other on-board port has the system disk connected.) I was having Disk #4 fail consistently, so I tried swapping the cables on the controller end. I swapped the on-board RAID disk with one on the PCI controller. Same issue now, expect with disk #1. Once the system's up, I can reactivate the RAID, it will resync for a while, then go to "Healthy", and will stay that way for an indefinite amount of time - until I reboot. As soon as I reboot, the disk drops again. I've ruled out disk + cable with the recabling. I don't believe it would be the controller as it seems to work fine most of the time - only failing on reboot, and the other port on the same controller connects the system disk - which is clearly working. I did look in the event log, but didn't see anything particularly relevant (although I didn't know what I was looking for - just looked for anything with a "Warning" or "Error" symbol that looked disk-related :)). I'm not particularly familiar with RAID on Windows, does anyone have any idea why this might be doing this? Any idea how to fix it? Any suggestions appreciated! -- Adam

• Apache2.2 not responding or logging anything on Win 7

  I'm having some trouble with Apache2.2 on Windows 7. For over a year it's been running no problem, but all of a sudden requests have just stopped responding. They don't time out as such, the browser just keeps on waiting forever. Nothing is recorded in either the error log (set to debug level), the access log, or Windows' Event Log. The problem showed up when I added a new VHost and restarted, however a syntax check has shown there's no problem with the config (from the little I changed), and the service does actually start error free. I've also disabled VHosts and tried with just localhost. I've tried to telnet to the web server, and it connects, but nothing happens. The prompt just goes blank and I can't type anything, and effectively become stuck. I've ensured there's a rule within Windows Firewall for Apache, and I've even disabled the entire thing just to check it wasn't the cause. Still the same. If I stop Apache however, the request fails immediately. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Apache, in the hope it might magically fix something using the default config, but still no joy. I've tried using a different port but nothing different. Does anybody have any suggestions to fix this? Or to perhaps try and figure out either if it's Apache itself not responding or something sitting between the two that's holding things up? I'm not too savvy on debugging Windows issues like this and I've been searching for hours but not found anything of use to me. Cheers Adam

  I have a CentOS 5.10 Linux box at home running on VMWare, with Windows 2008 as the host. I have set up a Hamachi VPN so that I can connect to the Host server from work, I attempted to add a second VNIC to the VM and bridged it to the hamachi Network Interface. I spun up the VM and checked eth1 with ifconfig and its throwing me a ipv6 address not a ipv4. I want to hook this VM up so that I can run a ssh command from work to the VM. MY network at home is all on Local 198.168.. hence the need to make a VPN network like Hamachi. I cannot seem to find anything that tells me or helps me with tunneling my Linux VM via Hamachi. Any help would be fantastic!
