• Changing IIS URL Rewrite config location

  Hi When used at site level, the IIS7 URL Rewrite 2 module saves its configuration in the web.config file of that site. I'm using Sitecore CMS, and best practice is to store any web.config customisations in a separate config file for ease of upgrading, staging/production setups etc. Is there any way to specify a different config file for IIS7 redirects? I know that application-level rewrites are stored in ApplicationHost.config, but I have several sites running on the server and would like to keep them separated. Thanks, Adam

• Google Maps iPhone API Terrain View

  We're using MapKit on an iPhone app to display a Google Map with terrain view. However, the terrain view only shows when the user has an active Internet connection, the moment the user's Internet is off, the terrain on the map disappears and it appears flat. • When learning C, should one only refer to resources published from 2007 onward?

  I ask this question because the international standardization subcommittee for programming languages, or ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22 Programming languages, states on this page: http://www.open-std.org/JTC1/SC22/WG14/www/standards that Technical Corrigendum 3, the latest one, was published in 2007.   What Unix program generates "diff"s between text files (or INSERT/UPDATE/DELETEs for databases) in such a way that the order that the "diff"s are applied in is irrelevant, and the result is the same regardless of order. Etherpad used to do something like this. Example (for a given document or database): % Adam makes a change X, then Bob makes a change Y, then Adam makes another change Z. % However, because of network latency, Adam sees the changes in this order: XZY, while Bob sees them in this order: YXZ. % However, the code/changes are written so that XYZ and YXZ yield the same result. Note: ideally, this can be done without having to do X/Y/Z inverse at any point.   I just ordered a laptop, and it came with Vista Home Premium 32. I want Vista Home Premium 64 on it. I'm planning a reinstall. Does anyone know if my product key for Vista 32 will also work for Vista 64 for an OEM copy? As far as I know, I just need to get the 64 bit media. Is this correct? Thanks. Update The laptop is a Dell XPS M1330, and its hardware is supported. Dell would even sell it with 64 bit. However, it was significantly more expensive for lower specs, and I couldn't get it in red.

• How can I get Virtual Server 2005 R2 running on Windows Server 2008 R2?

  For various reasons (old VT-less hardware, and .vhd support) we need to still run Virtual Server 2005 R2. It's just for lab/demo work but we'd like to run the host on the newest Windows OS possible. It's documented and at least partially supported to run the old Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 (non-R2). I've done that before. I'm wondering if anyone has gotten the scenario in the title above to work. • How to calibrate Wacom tablets under Ubuntu Lucid?

  I've been using Wacom tablets on Linux for quite some time, almost exclusively in Ubuntu, and in previous versions I've used xidump to track input values. I would use that information to put calibration settings in my xorg.conf file. However, in the most recent Ubuntu release, this command does not exist, and the package wacom-tools that previously installed it has now been removed. Is there a new method for calibrating Wacom pads under Linux? Should I have been using a different method all along for obtaining this information?

• IIS6.0 asking for credentials after MS Updates

  We have an IIS6.0 Server running on a Windows 2003 Server. Last weekend it went though maintenance, and updated a quite a few Windows updates, it is now brought up to current updates (as of March 29th). Previous to these updates we could connect to the Web page via the hostname or via a alias (there is a DNS and a WINS alias (the alias is the same name in both) that are both pointing to the system). Now since the updates it asks for credentials to access the page, when trying to access the page via IP, or by name. If you use the alias it will go right into the page. I had added a new alias in DNS and tried to access it via this name with the same effect. So it appears that the WINS alias allows the page to show up properly. I have seen this KB but http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871179 though not sure if it really is relevant to this issue. As it does refer to the 3 strikes rules to display the 401.1 error. The IIS Application pool is running under a domain account. Teh default page is allowing Anonymous login under a local account. Any thoughts? Thanks Adam

• RDS, RDWeb, and RemoteApp: How to use public certificate for launching apps on session host?

  Question: How do i tell RDWeb to launch apps from remote.domain.com rather then host.internaldomain.local? Environment: Existing org with AD forest. New single Server 2012 running all Remote Desktop Services roles for session host. Used the new 2012 wizard to setup "QuickSessionCollection" with roles: RD Session Host RD Connection Broker RD Gateway RD Web Access RD Licensing Everything works with self-signed cert, but we want to prevent those. The users are potentially non-domain machines so sticking a private root cert for on their machines isn't an option. Every part of the solution needs to use public cert. Added public remote.domain.com cert to all roles using Server Manager GUI: RD Connection Broker - Enable Single Sign On RD Connection Broker - Publishing RD Web Access RD Gateway So now everything works beautifully except the last step: user logs into https://remote.domain.com user clicks a app icon, which in background downloads a .rdp file that is signed by remote.domain.com. .rdp is set to use RD Gateway, which is remote.domain.com .rdp says app is hosted on internal host.internaldomain.local, which doesn't match the RDP-tcp TLS cert of remote.domain.com, and pops a warning. It's this last step that I'd like to fix. Is there a config option in PowerShell, WMI, or .config to tell RDWeb/RemoteApp to use remote.domain.com for all published apps so the TLS cert for RDP matches what the Session Host is using? NOTE: This question talks about this issue, and this answer mentions how you might fix it in 2008, but that GUI doesn't exist in 2012 for RemoteApp, and I can't find a PowerShell setting for it. NOTE: Here's a screenshot of the setting in 2008R2 that I need to change. It tells RemoteApp what to use for the Session Host server name. How can I set that in 2012?

• What is the simplest way to build your own .deb package?

  Having used Ubuntu for several years now, I've assembled a short list of scripts and packages that I always install on my computers. I would like to pack them up into a .deb to make it easier to get set up on a fresh OS installation. I'm imagining, for instance, one package that would install all of my custom BASH scripts that I've made for common tasks, and another one that would depend on other packages (like w64codecs) that I always install but forget that I need to until I go to do something and it's not there. It doesn't even have to be by-the-book; I'm not looking to deploy these publicly. I'm just looking to roll up all these tasks into one sudo dpkg --install. To quantify "simple" or "easy," I mean to say that I'm looking for the method with the fewest steps requiring the least technical knowledge and, most importantly, taking the least time.

  How would you go about shortening approximately 5,000 permalinks? The links point to a remote media archiving server, and are unlikely to change. Example URLs: rtsp://foo-1.bar.com/xx/xx/xx/xx.rm http://media.foo.org/xx/xx/xx.mp4 The URLs are going to be stored in a local MySQL database, as such it's crucial that the URLs are in a manageable form (i.e bit.ly or ow.ly). There are bulk URL shortening services, but those only allow shortening of 100 links/day, which isn't technically feasible so I need to think of something else.

• Product Recommendation: Good job scheduler for windows servers?

  Looking for a mostly-GUI tool that is low cost (less then $1k, but not required) and allows you to create scheduled tasks and jobs without writing vbscript, batch files, or powershell. Something simple that speaks SMB/CIFS, SMTP, LDAP, etc. for such things as "delete some files based on a list of folders from this text file" or "disable all users with expired accounts" or "delete all disabled users not in this AD group". I've seen some of the big multi-OS enterprise task automation systems and they just look way overkill. We're a windows-only shop, Server 2003 or newer and there's got to be a simple non-agent based product that is drag-n-drop for some of this basic automation. Today we use all three languages mentioned above, and the scripts are not as reliable as a workflow-based-tool would be. Thanks.

• Windows Vista - Can Boot into Safe Mode Command Prompt, Cannot Access Flash Drive

  Hey there, Got a laptop dropped into my lap. Has Vista installed. Normal boot never gets past the login screen. Safe mode will get past, but just barely. I can try and start the task manager at that point, but it never opens. Only reliable way to do anything I've got is the safe mode command prompt... Boots up and logs in fine. I can't see anything noticably wrong via regedit, but it's been a long time since I've had to fix up a Windows box... not sure that I would. Problem I'm having, is that I want to run ComboFix/etc, but have no way to get them on there... When I pop a flash drive in, it seems to mount it (flash drive flickers as normal) but it never seems to be mounted... I cannot access it through any drive letter on the command line. I managed to start the device manager (devmgmt.msc) and the flash drive was recognized and listed... Any ideas on how to get this thing going again? (Short of a reinstall.) (It has no CD drive, either, so burning files to CD would not be easy...) Thanks! Adam

• Apache2.2 not responding on Windows 7 desktop

  Afternoon! I'm having some trouble with Apache2.2 on Windows 7. For over a year it's been running no problem, but all of a sudden requests have just stopped responding. They don't ever time out, the browser just keeps on waiting for a response, which makes me think it's something blocking communication with Apache. Interestingly though, if I stop Apache the requests fail immediately. The Apache service is running, and using netstat I can see it listening on port 80 as configured: TCP 127.0.0.1:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING If I stop the Apache service, that line disappears. I have an entry within my hosts file for each VHost I'm trying, all pointing to 127.0.0.1. Each VHost is configured to *:80. Nothing however is getting recorded in the access or error (at debug level) log files. I've verified the file paths are correct, even though they were never changed. Neither is anything getting recorded within Windows' Event Log. The problem showed up when I added a new VHost and restarted, however I hadn't been using it for a couple of days prior so I don't believe it's the config change. I have performed a syntax check to be sure, and when starting from the command prompt no errors are reported there. I do have Windows Firewall running, however I've verified the Apache rule is correct and tried turning it off to ensure that wasn't the problem. I've reinstalled Apache, in the hope it might magically fix something using the default config, but still no joy. I've also tried using a different port. I'm completely lost for ideas now. • Can you install Ubuntu Server in a Windows PC VM on Windows 7?

  I am running Windows 7 64-bit. I've installed Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode successfully. Next, I downloaded Ubuntu Server 9.04 32-bit. I created a new virtual machine with a dynamically expanding .vhd, loaded the Ubuntu .iso, and booted the machine. I successfully made it through the install, but when the machine reboots, I get a segmentation fault. Here is a screenshot. Has anyone successfully installed Ubuntu on Windows Virtual PC?

• apache httpd.conf - virtualhost configuration

  I'm new to apache and httpd.conf The problem I'm having is I need different website to go to different vhost configs and if only the IP is requested it needs to go to the root index.html This works fine for the virtualhosts: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/bali-accommodation.co ServerName www.bali-accommodation.co </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/balibeach.co ServerName www.balibeach.co </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/dating-website.co ServerName www.dating-website.co </VirtualHost> However when I just specify the IP it does to www.XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (appends the www). I know in the websites there is a .htaccess redirect that adds the www but I didn't want the IP to go into the vhosts config. I tried adding this to the top of the Vhost config: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html ServerName localhost </VirtualHost> with above it shows the index.html perfectly but all the websites go into this catch all. I've also tried this for the websites vhosts: DocumentRoot /var/www/html/bali-accommodation.co ServerName www.bali-accommodation.co I've tried the above with and without the 'www' in the first line unsuccessfully. Is there a way to have the vhosts work for the domains and if someone just enters the IP it goes to the root index.html? /var/www/html/index.html? thankyou so much Adam

• Are there other application layer firewalls like Microfot TMG (ISA) that do advanced http rules?

  Since the old days ISA and now TMG have had several great features that I often want to deploy to my customers because of the enhanced functionality and security, but often the cost of an additinal server HW, Windows Server, and TMG license is too much to justify when compaired to a $300-500 appliance. Are there other gateway firewalls that can perform one or more of these application layer features: pre-auth incoming http traffic against AD/LDAP before sending packets to internal server (forms auth or basic creds popup)? read host headers of incoming http traffic (even on https) to a single public IP and route packets to different internal servers based on that host header?

• Windows Server 2008 - RAID 5 Fails on Reboot

  Hey, I've got an install of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. It's running software RAID-5 with five disks. The disks were originally formatted under Windows Server 2003, but came up fine once I installed Windows Server 2008. The issue I'm having is that every time I reboot the server, the RAID comes up with a "Failed Redundancy" - the data stays available. I have 4 disks on a PCI SATA controller, and one of the disks connected to the motherboard's on-board SATA ports. (The other on-board port has the system disk connected.) I was having Disk #4 fail consistently, so I tried swapping the cables on the controller end. I swapped the on-board RAID disk with one on the PCI controller. Same issue now, expect with disk #1. Once the system's up, I can reactivate the RAID, it will resync for a while, then go to "Healthy", and will stay that way for an indefinite amount of time - until I reboot. As soon as I reboot, the disk drops again. I've ruled out disk + cable with the recabling. I don't believe it would be the controller as it seems to work fine most of the time - only failing on reboot, and the other port on the same controller connects the system disk - which is clearly working. I did look in the event log, but didn't see anything particularly relevant (although I didn't know what I was looking for - just looked for anything with a "Warning" or "Error" symbol that looked disk-related :)). I'm not particularly familiar with RAID on Windows, does anyone have any idea why this might be doing this? Any idea how to fix it? Any suggestions appreciated! -- Adam
