    Possible Duplicate: How do you dive into large code bases? I have worked as a developer developing C/C++ applications for mobile platforms (Windows Mobile and Symbian) for about six years. About a year ago, however, I changed job and currently work with large(!) enterprise systems with high security and availability requirements, all developed in Java. My problem is that I am having a hard time getting a grip on the architecture of the systems, even after a year working with them, and understanding systems other people have built has never been my strong side. The fact that I haven't worked with enterprise systems before doesn't exactly help. Does anyone have a good approach on how to learn and understand large systems? Are there any particular techniques and/or patterns I should read up on?

I don't see that I'm able to use the same code base since the iPad version will have features in it that the iPhone version doesn't.     I am trying to add a few extra methods to a matrix type from the pysparse library. Apart from that I want the new class to behave exactly like the original, so I chose to implement the changes using inheritance. However, when I try from pysparse import spmatrix class ll_mat(spmatrix.ll_mat): pass this results in the following error TypeError: Error when calling the metaclass bases cannot create 'builtin_function_or_method' instances What is this causing this error? Is there a way to use delegation so that my new class behaves exactly the same way as the original?

    I find that I now often work with code bases that have different amounts of indentation. Some use 2 spaces, some use 4 space, some even use tabs! Once in a while, I have to share code between these codebases, or, sometimes I use an incorrect amount of indentation by mistake. Is there a tool or a text editor feature that will convert between different amounts of indentation?

    I got one of these for Christmas (this exact model): But it doesn't work very well with normal ceramic mugs as they're too thick and insulated. What I really want is a mug like this that fits well and transmits the heat from the warmer to my drink (so no air gaps or thick bases): Where can I get a mug like the one pictured above from? I like in the UK but don't mind ordering from overseas. Update: I've tried camping mugs but they all seem to be too wide. I will measure the base later and post exact dimensions.     I'm wondering what the best way is to host images on a social network site. Let's say that I expect my social network to reach 500.000 users in 2 years time. That would mean that if every user uploaded about 100 images and every image is 1 MB that I will have to need: 500.000 * 100 * 1 MB = 50.000.000 MB which means 50 terabytes. I'm not sure how I can best setup my hosting plan in order to have a solid bases to store my images and eventually store video files as well. Which hosting plan would you recommend me to start with and how can I enhance the plan?

  • Mongodump on Gridfs is killing the host IOs

    I'm trying to make a mongodump from our production mongodb while the production is running. We have three production instances, one regular mongodb, one with very few gb of data on gridfs, one with a larger amount of data on gridfs. All mongodb instances are running in version 2.4.9 on a ubuntu 10.04 virtual server. I use a mongodump command to export the bases to another server. Unfortunately our machines are virtually hosted in a "low performances" datacenter (vmware based) so when I try to export the large gridfs db, the disk IO hits 100% (and 50% of the cpu starts waiting for IO too). This has a very negative impact on the production applicatiosn because db access time is excessively increased, making the applications unusable. I'm looking for a way to regulate the mongodump so the export goes slower but cooler on the hardware ressources allowing better performances for the applications to run. Has anyone had a similar scenario ?

    Just got an SSD installed on my notebook and as people suggested I want have my bases covered in case it fails and I expect it to fail. Here is what I have in mind... keep a partition on the main drive (HDD) the same size as the SSD and keep a "clone" there, and in case the SSD fails... I take the SSD out and boot from the clone partition. From my understanding SuperDuper! does just that for MacOS, but I don't seem to find a something similar. I've found a lot of great tools out there that enables you to make bootable images (CloneZilla, DriveImage XML, Acronis® True Image™ to name a few), that is not what I'm looking for.
