• Application that recoginzes default gestures and tells me about results

  I need to check what gestures are available for certain touch pads, and also find out what kind of information is available. Is there some kind of application that simply recognizes gestures and prints out all relevant parameters for my test? I am mainly interested in multi-finger gestures, with 2-3 fingers, but also, whether distinctino about where a gesture was done (e. g. right border, left border) would be very helpful. Target is going to be Windows 7 and 8 64 bit.

• Password not accepted when resuming from sleep

  My HP Pavilion dv-series notebook will not accept the user account password for the logged in user when resuming from sleep - message returned is Incorrect Password. Simply selecting the Switch User option reloads the login screen and allows me to log in as the same user with the same password that was originally rejected. And, yes I've tried it more than one (hundred) times in case you were thinking it's just a case of slippery fingers. Another interesting point is that it appears to be independent of the software running on the machine. Since the issue first appeared, I have done two clean installs where all HD partitions were wiped and new ones created during fresh installation of the OS. The first such clean install was of Ubuntu (Lucid) 10.04 amd-64, the second of Win 7 Pro 64 (from boxed disc and activated post install). Exactly the same symptoms, described above, are exhibited on both platforms. Have engaged in significant amount of Googling an come up empty so any ideas are welcome.

• Move 2TB Win7x64 to 640GB HDD

  Basically I just got a new (refurbished) HP H8-1260t to use for Windows Media Center. The shipping drive is a 2TB Hitachi drive, but I have an older and barely used 640GB WD Caviar Blue 7200RPM drive I would like to move my Windows install to. I have about 750GB of data with over 1TB free left on the drive. Having googled my heart and fingers out, I would think that I can shrink my partition down to the size it is full at now with over 1TB free for a second partition where I can move my media files to further shrink my boot partition so that I can fit a system image smaller than 640GB on that WD drive. I want to have a separate drive for Media and TV Recordings from my boot disk. Does this sound like the easiest method for me? Or am I doing this all wrong. Help appreciated.

• Can anyone recommend a Windows 7 Slate that supports inking for OneNote?

  Hi All, I've been looking for a Windows 7 Slate for many months now that supports inking so I can use Microsoft OneNote. The slate is going to be used specifically to replace my notepad in meetings and I would like to be able to read and ink Word Documents, Excel spreadsheets, and use OneNote as my note taking application. I will also be doing the odd powerpoint presentation on it. I would like a 10" screen and very important is the ability to use a stylus with a fine tip (like a pen). I have been using the HP TC1100 with Windows XP tablet for a few years and even though it's served me well it's time to change. I've seen a few new tablets announced as CES 2011 but they all seem to be capacitive touch (movement with fingers). I'd like something I can use a stylus with a fine tip (like a pen). Any one got any idea on what's out there or what's due in the next month or two?

• How would the optimal Emacs-keyboard look like?

  Emacs is a historic piece of software. It promises outstanding productivity for keyboard wizards that really want to explore it's power. The effective use of the keyboard is key to Emacs productivity, but the keyboard hardware has changed a lot since the old days, so many modern Emacs users are struggling with weird 'Emacs chords' on their Windows/IBM keyboards. If one would design a keyboard that is entirely focused on the needs of Emacs users - how would it look like? I assume the following: the standard keybindings of Emacs are accepted, redefinitions are rare exceptions we are only talking about QWERTY keyboards (including regional variations like QWERTZ) we are only considering users applying the (10 fingers) touch typing system. the question is not only about remapping the keys of existing keyboards (perfectly possible on Linux with .xmodmap and on Windows with keytweak, for example) - think about the perfect keyboard-hardware you would like to see on your desk while hacking in Emacs all day long. Please tag your answer with your locale, i.e. [en] or [de], so that everybody knows what regional layout you are using. I will answer my own question below, to show you the results of some investigation and experimentation, but I really would like to read about different approaches and their pro's and con's. • Remapping keyboard to get extra cursor keys - but why stick to VIM standard hjkl

  Inspired from VIM I recently remapped my keyboard layout to get extra keys for cursor movement. Being fluent in both QWERTY and DVORAK, it came quite natural to me to remap the DF and JK keys rather than the VIM standard hjkl keys. Here is my reasoning It enables me to quickly identify cursor keys since F and J are physically marked on my keyboard I'm using two hands for movement rather than one. I guess from DVORAK I learned to appreciate shifting between hands rather than using primarily one hand. It maps well with the Kinesis keyboard mapping http://www.kinesis-ergo.com/advantage.htm that I use occasionally. I feel I'm using my strongest fingers. I don't have to stretch my right index finger to read H as I would using the VIM layout. However, since I am still doing green field explorations on the cursor key remapping, I'd like others to share their experiences and/or criticize my suggested mapping. PS. • How To Temporarily Disable The Touch Screen In X1 Carbon

  I know, why would anyone want to do that? Scott properly predicted: Don't knock a touchscreen until you've used one. Every laptop should (and will) have a touch screen in a year. Mark my words. And surely, less than a year later, the X1 Carbon (an amazing ultrabook for sure) has a touch model. And as of today, the price difference for the touch screen is a ridiculous $30 (actually $24 with a “back to school” coupon right now ;)): So why would you NOT get it? I know for some it works great. Now, let’s get real about touch *for a developer* for a minute. About 99.9% of my time in front of my laptop I’m either using Visual Studio or Chrome. I have my hands on the keyboard ALL THE TIME. I use the trackpoint ALL THE TIME. If I want to scroll, I only have to slightly move my fingers. I don’t click around much on pages: I READ them. • I spoke at SQL Saturday #77 and all I got was this really awesome speaker's shirt!

  Yeah, it was 2 weeks ago, but I'm finally blogging about something! I presented Revenge: The SQL! at SQL Saturday #77 in Pensacola on June 4.  The session abstract is here, and you can download the slides from that page too.  You can see how I look in the speaker's shirt here. Overall it went pretty well.  I discovered a new bit of evil just that morning and in a carefully considered, agonizing decision-making process that was full documented, tested, and approved…nah, I just went ahead and added it at the last minute.  Which worked out even better than (not) planned, since it screwed me up a bit and made my point perfectly.  I had a few fans in the audience, and one of them recorded it for blackmail material posterity. I'd like to thank Karla Landrum (blog | twitter) and all the volunteers for putting together such a great event, and for being kind enough to let me present. (Note to Karla: I'll get the next $100 to you as soon as I can.  Might need a few extra days on the next $100.) • Blending animations for more character movements

  I am making a hack n slash 3rd person game. And I want the character movements to be more dynamic not like fighting games where you have a moves list. I want to animate tons of different animations and have them "Tween" between each other? Because I want the controls to not be keyboard mouse. I want it to be all keyboard. that way you have up to 10 inputs (All your fingers) to blend and morph animations to create more fluid movements. In the end this will almost be similar to characters typing a phrase or string of keys rather than move forward mouse look click to melee. My question is. Has anyone done this before and would someone go about trying to tween lets say one for key on the keyboard excluding Tab, Caps, R+Shift, L+Shift, Enter, R+Ctrl, L+Ctrl, L+Alt, R+Alt, Windows Key, and Menu. So thats all the numbers, letters and punctuation keys. Thats 46 keys gives me a combination of 46P1 = 5502622159812088949850305428800254892961651752960000000000L (used Python) and with a minimum entry value of 2 keypresses shortening to half. This is not humanly possible to create so many inique animations in one lifetime. But I'm guessing there is a reason this hasn't been done already. Or if I just used 10 basic keys. Maybe ASDF SPACE (RIGHT HAND) 456+0 (LEFT HAND KEYPAD) it would give me 3,628,800 posible unique animations.

• Google Author information in search results still havent displayed my details in search results

First i added google + link in certain web pages and in my google profile i added those pages which had google + anchor link with rel=author tag. After updating i used the following to verify. http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?url=http%3A%2F%2Fvikku.info%2Fcodesnippets%2Fphp%2F&view= You can see that my pic is appearing at the right. here is a screen shot. so, what am i missing? why it is not in the search result. The author of labnol.org said it will take 3 days for my profile photo link to appear... ? • Getting Xbox Live via a wired network with my laptop that has internet access wirelessly

  I'm running the latest version (as of yesterday anyways) of Ubuntu Desktop 64bit, but installed on my laptop if it makes a difference. I had Windows 7 preinstalled when i bought it and it worked fine with the wireless from my house and bridging the connection with a LAN to my xbox for Live. Now with Ubuntu I tried the same setup, but I'm unfamiliar with Ubuntu so I didn't get far. Best I got so far is wireless internet on my laptop and a wired connection to the xbox that continually connects and disconnects. Heres my network settings. if theres fields not included its because theyre empty on mine or theyre my MAC address or network password Wireless Network 1 settings: Connect Automatically: Checked. Available to all Users: Checked Wireless: SSID: Franco's Mode: Infrastructure MTU: Automatic IPv4 Settings: Method: Automatic (DHCP) IPv6 Settings: Method: Automatic Wired Network 1: Connect Automatically: Checked Available to all Users: Checked Wired: MTU: Automatic IPv4 Settings: Method: Automatic (DHCP) IPv6 Settings: Method: Automatic Any help would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: 6:26pm It seems to be staying connected now. Doing the Network test on my xbox it pickups the network, but cannot detect any PC. Restarting the Xbox, however, leaves my computer unable to connect bringing up the Wire Network disconnected 'blip' every minute or so again. Before I had restarted the Xbox it said "Connected 100 MB/s". Now it only says "connecting". I did have my computer and xbox on in this Wired Network Disconnected blip cycle for a long period of time so it may have finally connected, just without the ability to detect my laptop. I left for 2 hours or so in the middle of typing up the original question. I finished posting this when i got back and then tried to mess with it a bit again, in case youre wondering why i didnt include this before... I've said too much. Forgive my long-winded fingers :p

• Moodle 2 pages loading up to 2000% faster

  On average our Moodle 2 pages were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, so that’s like 2333.333% faster!What was it I hear you say?Well it was the database connection, or more correctly the database library. I was using FreeTDS http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Installing_MSSQL_for_PHP, but now I’m using the new Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20098. I’m in a Windows Server IT department, and in both our live and development environments, we have Moodle 2.2.3, IIS 7.5, and PHP 5.3.10 running on two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers and using MS Network Load Balancing.Since moving to Moodle 2, the pages have always loaded much more slowly than they did in Moodle 1.9, I’ve been chasing this issue for quite a while. I had previously tried the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server 2.0, but my testing showed it was slower than the FreeTDS driver.Then yesterday I found Microsoft had released the new version, Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server, so I thought I’d give it a run, and wow what a difference it made.Pages that were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, 2333.333% faster…I have more testing to do, but so far it’s looking good, I have scheduled multi user load testing for early next week (fingers crossed).To make the change all I need to do was,download the driverscopy the relevant files to PHP\ext (for us they were php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll and php_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll) install the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client x64 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29065 add to PHP.ini, extension=php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll, extension=php_sqlsrv_53_nts.dllremove form PHP.ini, extension=php_dblib.dllvchange in PHP.ini, mssql.textlimit = 20971520 and mssql.textsize = 20971520change Moodle config.php, $CFG->dbtype = 'sqlsrv'; and 'dbpersist' => Trueand then reboot and test…I've browsed courses, backed up/restored some really large and complicated courses, deleted courses etc. etc. all good.Still more testing to do but, hey this is good start...Hope this helps anyone experiencing the same slowness…

• Today I talk about you

  Some time back I posted a blog entry (mirrored here and here) asking you how you design databases. Out of those responses, my own experience, studies I read, and interviews I conducted, I collected a wealth of data. Thanks for your responses. So what am I going to do with that information? Well, all along I had planned for that to be used today. I am giving a presentation at an event called “TechReady” called “How Your Customers Design Databases”. This is a Microsoft-internal event, where technical professionals like myself, salespeople, and the product team get together to talk about what has been working, what doesn’t, what is coming and hopefully (fingers crossed here) what the product team can do to help us help the SQL Server community. I’ve mentioned before that I teach database design as part of a course I run at the University of Washington. I’m also planning to give a mini-lecture from that series at TechEd 2010, so if you’re coming stop by. I’d love to meet you. So today I talk about you – thanks for the input. I hope you and I can make a difference in the product. Might take a while, but it’s nice to know your voice is being heard. So why bring this up while talking about Windows Azure? Well, apart from their similar last names these powers are soon to be combined if Microsoft's roadmap is to be believed - "Together, Windows Server AppFabric and Windows Azure platform AppFabric provide a comprehensive set of services that help developers rapidly develop new applications spanning Windows Azure and Windows Server, and which also interoperate with other industry platforms such as Java, Ruby, and PHP." One of the most powerful features of the Windows Server App Fabric is its distributed caching mechanism which if appropriately leveraged with the Windows Azure App Fabric could very well mean a revolution in the Session Management techniques for the Azure platform. • How should a developer reject impossible requirements?

  Here's the problem I'm facing: Quote From Project Manager: Hey Sugar, I'm assigning you the task of developing a framework that could be used for many different iOS applications. Here are the requirements: It should be able to detect the thickness of the thumb or fingers being used to manipulate the UI. With this information, all elements of the UI should be arranged & sized automatically. For a larger thumb, elements should be arranged nearer the center of the screen. For a smaller thumb, elements should be arranged nearer the corners of the screen. For a larger thumb, all fonts should be smaller. (We're assuming an adult in this case.) For a smaller thumb, all fonts should be larger. (We're assuming a younger person in this case.) Summary: This framework is required for creating user-friendly user interfaces programmatically. The framework should be developed in such a way that we can use for as many projects as needed, so it must also be very developer-friendly. I am the developer given this task, so my questions are as follows: How can I explain that these requirements are a little ridiculous? How can I explain that it would be better to concentrate on developing actual projects? How can I explain that even if this were possible, I wouldn't recommended developing such a thing? How do I say NO to this project politely, gently, and respectfully? How can I explain that even for a developer with 3 years of experience, this might not be possible?

• Prevent oversteering catastrophe in racing games

  When playing GTA III on Android I noticed something that has been annoying me in almost every racing game I've played (maybe except Mario Kart): Driving straight ahead is easy, but curves are really hard. When I switch lanes or pass somebody, the car starts swiveling back and forth, and any attempt to correct it makes it only worse. The only thing I can do is to hit the brakes. I think this is some kind of oversteering. What makes it so irritating is that it never happens to me in real life (thank god :-)), so 90% of the games with vehicles inside feel unreal to me (despite probably having really good physics engines). I've talked to a couple of people about this, and it seems either you 'get' racing games, or you don't. With a lot of practice, I did manage to get semi-good at some games (e.g. from the Need for Speed series), by driving very cautiously, braking a lot (and usually getting a cramp in my fingers). What can you do as a game developer to prevent the oversteering resonance catastrophe, and make driving feel right? (For a casual racing game, that doesn't strive for 100% realistic physics) I also wonder what games like Super Mario Kart exactly do differently so that they don't have so much oversteering? I guess one problem is that if you play with a keyboard or a touchscreen (but not wheels and pedals), you only have digital input: gas pressed or not, steering left/right or not, and it's much harder to steer appropriately for a given speed. The other thing is that you probably don't have a good sense of speed, and drive much faster than you would (safely) in reality.   I am new to Android game development. I am using AndEngine GLES-2. I have created a box with a sprite. This box is now draggable by using the code below. It works fine. But I want multi-touch on this: I want to rotate the sprite with two fingers on that box, and to keep it draggable. • How does a CS student negotiate in/after a job interview?

  Alright, I've gotten to the second step in the interview process. At this point I'm working under the assumption that I might be offered a position -- flying my butt to Redmond would be quite an expense if they weren't at least considering me for something (*crosses fingers*). So, if one is offered a position, how should a CS student negotiate? I've heard a few strategies about dealing with software companies when you are being considered for a hire, but most of them are considering the developer in a powerful position. In such examinations, (s)he has lots of job experience, and may even be overqualified for what the employer is looking for. (s)he is part of a small job market of qualified developers, because 99% of applications companies receive are from those who are woefully under qualified. I'm in a completely different position. I think I compare favorably to most of my fellow students, and I have been a programmer for almost 10 years, but often I still feel green compared to most of my coworkers. I'm in a position where the employer holds most of the chips; they'd be doing me quite a favor by hiring me. I think this scenario is considerably different than the targets for most of the advice I've seen. Above all, I don't want to be such a prick negotiating that it damages my chances to actually operate in a position, even if it means not negotiating at all. How should one approach a scenario like this? P.S. If this is off topic feel free to close it -- I think it's borderline and I'm of the opinion that it's better to ask and be closed than not ask at all ;)

• Zoom Layer centered on a Sprite

  I am in process of developing a small game where a space-ship travels through a layer (doh!), in some situations the spaceship comes close to an enemy space ship, and the whole layer is zoomed in on the two with the zoom level being dependent on the distance between the ship and the enemy. All of this works fine. The main question, however, is how do I keep the zoom being centered on the center point between the two space-ships and make sure that the two are not off-screen? • Does this syntax for specifying Django conditional form display align with python/django convention?

  I asked a similar question on Stackoverflow and was told it was better asked here. So I'll ask it slightly rephrased. I am working on a Django project, part of which will become a distributable plugin that allows the python/django developer to specify conditional form field display logic in the form class or model class. I am trying to decide how the developer must specify that logic. Here's an example: class MyModel(models.Model): #these are some django model fields which will be used in a form yes_or_no = models.SomeField...choices are yes or no... why = models.SomeField...text, but only relevant if yes_or_no == yes... elaborate_even_more = models.SomeField...more text, just here so we can have multiple conditions #here i am inventing some syntax...i am looking for suggestions!! #this is one possibility why.show_if = ('yes_or_no','==','yes') elaborate_even_more.show_if = (('yes_or_no','==','yes'),('why','is not','None')) #help me choose a syntax that is *easy*...and Pythonic and...Djangonic...and that makes your fingers happy to type! #another alternative... conditions = {'why': ('yes_or_no','==','yes'), 'elaborate_even_more': (('yes_or_no','==','yes'),('why','is not','None')) } #or another alternative... • BLOG Resurrection

  Dear Netizens, I apologize for my long absense...its amazing how time just slips through your fingers when you don't have anything to say...and are so busy personally and professionally that all of a sudden its over a year and you've not touched your blog...   Plus the immediacy of that 140 character twitter feed makes it so that my blog stuff becomes tid bits of life..instead of a narrative. When did that happen? When did we become a society of 140 character tid bits instead of emails or narative blocks. Are we so keyed into micro-commentary these days that we don't have conversations anymore?  When did posts on Twitter become news on CNN? But anyway, Netizens I'd like to come back to this narrative..I have some interesting professional developments to share with the world too. So--I hope this continues, and I post more along the way.  I can't promise that though, I'm a terrible procrastinator...so who knows. But I'll try..so stick around..maybe I'll have some more profound things to say then complaints about traffic on my commute etc.

• Awesome and LXDE desktop managers messed up KDE

  I saw a desktop manager named "Awesome" earlier on Google+, and thought I'd give it a try. In short, I didn't like it, but it got me wondering what other desktops were like, which I hadn't tried. The first one to come to mind was LXDE. I installed that, and tried it. I wasn't a big fan, so I just went to log back into KDE. Only, when I log in, everything is screwy. My theme is weird (although, according to system settings, it is still the same). All the categories and application short cuts in the KMenu are gone, except my favorites, which are now renamed with the "short name", it seems. I know these things are global resources, so it is very likely that one of these Window Managers screwed it up, but I need it fixed. Actually, it seems that after restarting the theme problem fixed itself, but the KMenu items disappearing is still a problem. Does anyone know where these items are stored? (I know they are are just .desktop files somewhere, IIRC, but I don't remember where they are usually stored so I can see if they are still there). I'm hoping it's just a matter of a broken link or something somewhere, not deleted shortcuts... :/ In summary: Any ideas on what caused this? Do you know how to fix the KMenu, or at least where the .desktop shortcuts are stored for the KMenu so I can see if they still exist (crosses fingers).
