    I have an Archos 5 Internet tablet with Android. I have been using it to stream video over my XP wifi network. Yesterday the Archos stopped seeing any of my computers. I have found some programs that allow me to see the network, so I know the hardware works. However, this program does not allow me to pick the correct program to play the files I want. I suspect the problem lies somewhere on the XP side. This would probably work better if the Archos 5 allowed me to manually input the IP address. Help?

  • How to "host' an application on one mac and run it on another

    I recently replaced my mac computer and would like to know if it is possible to run software on that computer that actually runs on another computer. My problem is that I use a terminal emulator that speaks SCO-ANSI on my old computer, but it is not compatible with the new version of OS X. I don't want to pay the exorbitant ($200+) licensing fee to get a current version of the software, so I'd like to know if it's possible to run the emulator on the old computer and just "stream" its window somehow to my new Mac computer.   • How to prevent mod_proxy from rewriting redirects into absolute URLs?

    I have: nginx (port 80) reverse-proxying to apache2 (port 88) reverse-proxying to a web app (port 5001). However, when the web app responds with a redirect like Location: /foo, apache2 rewrites this into Location: http://host.com:88/sub/foo, even though port 88 is publicly inaccessible. I'd like it to just redirect to the relative URL Location: /sub/foo. Any ideas?     I would like to be able to have a nice management tool to allow the rollout of different versions of a windows service over time. for example I would like to deploy my software (windows service) in version numbered folders, e.g. c:\wss\v1.0 c:\wss\v1.1 etc however I dont want to have to reinstall the windows service each time but rather would like to be able to easily point the windows service manager to the new folder. Are there tools to get this done? NB: I have used Windows Junctions before (from sysinternals) however I am wondering if there is a nice GUI tool to do this.

It there anyway to let me set the brightness? Then i found a ebuild app-laptop/nvdiabl-0.81 and tried to emerege nvidabl, I got this message: Your kernel does not support FB_BACKLIGHT.   • Only allow certain processes to connect to MS SQL

    I've lost the source code for a very old application that connects to a MS SQL-server for some SQL queries. Since the login is hard-coded in the application I can't change the username/password on the server. One day the password will probably be known to the users and we surely need to change it. But how? One idea is to only allow the old application to do the queries on the SQL server and block out any other application like the query analyzer etc. Can I set process permission somehow? The SQL server (MS SQL 2005) and application (C++) are on the same machine It's too costly to rewrite the old program Thanks for help!

  • Expectations for NTFS file recovery

    Yesterday I booted my XP system, and as I looked up a minute later I saw the light blue screen and tail-end of that pre-boot diskcheck Windows sometimes does if it finds an error (or was previously told to run a diskcheck drung the next boot). I didn't worry about it at the moment... But then I looked at my "scratch" disk, which was a 70% full, 750GB hard disk...and it now looks like it has been freshly formatted. It doesn't have a single file on it, just the hidden "System Volume Information" file and 750GB of freedom from data. I looked at some of the recovery tools from the Free NTFS partition recovery question and decided to try PC INSPECTOR™ File Recovery 4.x initially. It ran overnight and afterwards returned a list of thousands of files it could recover. The odd thing was that the filenames were lost, but the file extensions were not (WTF?). And all of the files were exactly 1,472kB in size. I recovered a dozen PDFs as a test, and 80% of them displayed OK despite being padded out to 1.5MB (though I assume any files 1472kB are hosed). My primary question is: Is this the best I can expect from any file recovery software when trying to recover NTFS files? Or is there perhaps something better out there? I assume this is as good as it gets, but wanted to check in with the experts first. Bonus questions: What might have happened to my drive? I didn't intentionally format it. I've never seen a disk error cause the drive to suddenly become a clean, reformatted drive. Could some malicious/confused software have told my PC to format my disk on reboot? Is that even a function Windows XP has? Why can the file extensions be recovered but not the filename? Does NTFS really treat them as separate entities? I thought I had 8.3 naming turned off, but maybe that had something to do with it. Or maybe it looks at the data in the file and guesses the extension?

    HI All, I have two identical seagate 7200.9 500Gb drives confiured as a RAID 0 spanned disk in windows. One of the drives has lost power and wont spin up at all. I know this normally means death for the data on both drives but i have a cunning plan.. DISK 1 - NO POWER RAID 0 DISK DISK 2 - FULLY FUNCTIONAL RAID 0 DISK DISK 3 - FULLY FUNCTIONAL SPARE DISK Copy the working drive (disk 2) data to a third 500GB DISK (disk 3), remove the logic board from the working disk (disk 2) and replace it with the non working logic board on the broken drive (disk 1) , then hopefully recreate the RAID 0 with disk 1 and disk 3, just long enough to get the data off it. Hope this makes sense, here are my questions: Windows disk manager atm recognises disk 2 but wont let me access it in anyway, therefore copying the data off it (or getting a disk image) cant be done in windows. Does anyone know of any software (in linux or self booting) that would allow me to access this disk? Anyone know of any software that will recreate the spanned drive off two disk images Am i missing any key information that means i definitely shouldn't even bother starting this, i know its a long shot anyway but its worth a try unless i definitely cant do it. The irritating thing is that i am sure its a logic board failure on disk 1 as it simply wont power up at all, suddenly no signs of life, so i am sure the data is intact! Any help would be really appreciated! Thanks

  • Under what circumstances can/will a 10BASE-T device slow down a 100BASE-T or faster network?

    Suppose I have a 10BASE-T device, but everything else on my network is 100BASE-T or faster. When I attach the 10Mbit device, one of two things could happen: It could be passed through as 10BASE-T, making whatever it's connected to slow down to 10BASE-T, or It could be converted to a higher speed. I'm looking for all the plausible examples where #1 could happen; where attaching this 10Mbit device will slow down other traffic. I sorta think it can't happen - that as soon as it comes into contact with other traffic it has to get retimed to be inserted into the higher rate traffic (so no slowdown aside from the extra bits from the connection), and that when it's not contacting other traffic, who cares if it's only 10Mbit? Basically I'd like a better understanding of any impact of inserting a slow device into a fast ethernet network.

However, if I send a mail to local user (without domain name): # mail <user> All mails are deliver to my server's mail spooler (/var/spool/mail). How can I get groff to see and respect the line breaks in use in the shell?

  • Recover open but deleted file on Linux using ln instead of cp

    Say I have a file that's downloading (from a source that's hard to re-download from), but accidentally deleted from the filesystem namespace (/tmp/blah), and I'd like to recover this file. Normally I could just cp /proc/$PID/fd/$FD /tmp/blah, but in this case that would only get me a partial snapshot, since the file is still downloading. Furthermore, once the download completes, the downloading process (e.g. Chrome) will close the FD. Any way to recover by inode/create a hard link? Any other solutions? If it makes any difference, I'm mainly concerned with ext4. Thanks in advance.

  • Piecing together low-powered hardware for an RS-232 terminal server

    I'm working on reconstructing my Cisco lab for training/educational purposes and I found that the actual terminal server I have is dead. I have a couple of 8-port PCI serial cards which would be more than ample for my lab, but I don't want to leave my personal computer running to be able to access the console ports. Ideally I would access the terminal server remotely, either by SSH/RDP to the box (depending on what OS I go with) or by installing a software package that allows me to telnet directly to a serial port. I know I've found a program that does this under Linux in the past but its name escapes me at the moment. I'm thinking about scavenging for some old hardware, on eBay or something, to put together a low-powered PC. Needs to be something that: Has Low-power consumption Has at least 2 PCI slots (though I certainly wouldn't complain about having more) Has onboard Ethernet (or, if not, another PCI or ISA slot (not shared)) Can be headless once an OS installed (probably Linux) I'm currently leaning towards an old fashioned Pentium (sub-133MHz era) but I am wondering if anybody else knows of another platform/mobo that would suit these needs. Alternatively, I've been considering buying a Raspberry Pi and a big USB hub along with a bunch of USB-Serial adapters but this sounds like it'd get messy quick with cables and adapters all over the place, and I may not even have the same ttyS#'s between boots.

  • Syncing Multiple Google Calendars and with Outlook and Android

    Perhaps this is a multipart question, but I deal with a lot of calendars in my life, and want to know if there is some way to sync them all together, and maintain appropriate privacy. So I have a family calendar that my ex and I maintain for kid events, and I have a personal calendar for my own life, and I have an Outlook work calendar, for work. Ideally I'd look at my calendar on my Android phone. Is it possible to sync them all together? Is it possible for there to be one calendar to rule them all on my phone, but have the other calendars blank out spaces that are from other calendars, but only show the blanked out without the details. (I don't want my date with Miss Hottie to appear that way on the family calendar, and I probably don't want my visit to the proctologist to appear in the corporate exchange server.) Are there tools available to do this? Bonus question, can I do the same with my to do lists? Double bouns question -- how can I solve world hunger and help us to all live together in peace? :-)

    Hi everyone, I assume those who are reading this page know what vimwiki and dropbox.com are and what they are for, so I might directly go into my confusion. The common way of setting a PRIVATE vimwiki on dropbox is simply let your vimwiki directories be under Dropbox folder (but not Dropbox/Public/ because it would be PUBLIC). Dropbox allows directly viewing html with dropbox.com/* url: for example a index.html can be accessed by url https://dl-web.dropbox.com/get/Wiki/html/index.html?w=bfead71a, being added after the file name a specified string, ?w=bfead71a. Hence, if inside index.html there is reference to A.html, which is located in the same folder index.html is in, it has to be accessed using some url like https://dl-web.dropbox.com/get/Wiki/html/index.html?w=SPECIFIED_STRING. But it is seemingly impossible to hack vimwiki in order to make the hrefs in converted htmls corrected in this way. Is there some approach that can resolve this problem? I hope I make myself clear. My problem comes in correctly formatting nginx.conf to allow multipe upstream conditions. Whatever i do does not seem to work. One instance is fine works fine. Multiple gives me a ""upstream" directive is not allowed here error I am using the base nginx sample from the unicorn site. and doubling up the upstream area with differing terms. each is part of the http set. Any help would be amazing!

  • apt-mirror does not mirror the i18n directory

    I need to setup a local Ubuntu mirror so the whole network doesn't need to hit remote servers in order to update and install new packages. Following a brief tutorial found here, I managed to get a server up and running that correctly mirrors packages from the main and restricted categories. However, when I call apt-get update on a client, I get a couple of errors such as : Ign http://192.168.1.18 karmic/main Translation-fr Ign http://192.168.1.18 karmic/restricted Translation-fr Checking back on the server, I see that apt-mirror only took the binary-amd64 directory of the mirror, and didn't take i18n that would provide Translation-fr. The manpage for apt-mirror doesn't say anything about i18n, and Google is of no help either. How do I properly mirror i18n?   • Ping, firewall or DNS issue on Win Server 2008 R2

    I've installed windows server 2008 as a VM for the developers here to work on. Installed SQL Server 2008 as well as IIS7. I am not quite sure why, I can remote into that machine using the name I gave to it (winserverdev) but the guys that are supposed to use the bloody thing can't. One very interesting thing is that I can connect but I can't ping... not the name nor the IP address. Is there anything that I should be looking in order to make it work? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks heaps in advance, I really appreciate it.

  • Nvidia restricted driver = invisible menus when using VNC

    I'm installing 9.04 on an HTPC, so I will often VNC in to work on it from my laptop. After the initial install, I updated everything, and it all went fine. I was able to VNC using Ubuntu's built-in "Remote Desktop" with no problems. I then installed the 180.xx restricted nvidia drivers and rebooted. Everything worked fine on my TV, but when I VNC'd into it, all I could see was the background and title bar. When I'd pull down a menu, the menu was visible on the TV but not over the VNC link. I assume that means the GUI was now using some sort of overlay for the menus, which is fine, but what's the best way to make them visible over VNC? Clarification: I know I can turn off all visual effects and solve the problem, but I'm looking for a way to see the menus over VNC while keeping the GUI pretty...
